Adelle Bradbury doesn’t like adventure—in books or real life. As a quiet librarian who hides behind reading glasses, she doesn’t expect to be swept into a dangerous mission to recover one of the world’s most famous lost treasures. But that’s exactly what happens when a mysterious history buff enlists her help to recover a treasure map—A map he insists is concealed in one of the library’s old books, its contents revealing the secret location of King Solomon’s missing wealth. Suddenly, mild-mannered Adelle is thrust into a world of treasure hunters, secret societies, and thieving profiteers. In a mad dash to protect the treasure, she finds a courage she never expected and something more—the possibility of true love.

Oh, that’s right, there must be some spiteful villains, a mystery to solve and, of course, a treasure to find. It’s all in these few pages. My only complaint is that I wanted the story to continue. Author Laura Briggs does a wonderful job drawing out her characters and, even though this story is short, we get a really good view of what the future holds for Adelle and Brandon.

Lilly Allen is working on a story that can make her career, but this story is about to become personal.

Lilly’s life is perfect. She has money, a great boyfriend (who she hopes will become a fiancé soon), a good job, and a loving family (even if her mother is a tad bit annoying). What more can this girl ask for? As heroines go, I found Lilly to be very realistic. She did have flaws and character quirks, some of which annoyed me, but it made her even more realistic. My one complaint about her was that she was a bit on the spoiled side.

Grier, the hero, was yummy. He was supportive, loving, and really all a woman can ask for. What I loved was that he didn’t spend every single waking moment with Lilly and that he had a fully developed life of his own. While the whole story was written from Lilly’s point of view, we got to live some of Grier’s life too.

Luke, Lilly’s brother, stole the show for me. I actually liked him more than I liked the hero, and I really wish to see him get a woman in his own book. (Please, can Luke get a book?)

Now the plot: I love genetic engineering plots, and this was no exception. I don’t want to reveal more or give spoilers away, but this plot had evil, sinister villains who had me on the edge of my seat. This plot had me completely intrigued and I hope other readers will enjoy it as much as I did.  I recommend this one for fans of fast-paced romantic suspense.

Jane, the Honorable Miss Lumley, is in a bind. She can’t help boasting about her friendship with author Mr. Michael Girard, whose sweeping new series of adventurous tales set on the high seas have fetched a high price at a Nottingham book auction.

Darkly debonair bookseller Lachlan, Lord Stathmore, finds Girard’s stories improbable but knows they will sell. When Jane’s impassioned defense wins him over, he asks her to arrange a meeting with the mysterious Mr. Girard.

But how can she, when she herself is the stories’ scribe and she is forced to keep the real seafarer’s identity secret? A Christmas cotillion offers a solution. But while men’s clothes and a mask might be enough to hide her identity, will her double masquerade be enough to conceal her rising passion?

Kate Fox’s Double Masquerade is, as the title suggests, about deceptions. Little ones, that grow and grow. Unlike the story.

While that may sound like an ungracious and uncomplimentary comment, it is neither. Double Masquerade is a good story, well written and packed with untapped potential. I wanted more, much more.

Ms. Fox’s characters are delightful, her story packed with humour and emotion. Her heroine, Jane, the Honourable Miss Lumley is in a bind in as much she’s found an occupation she love, but which is discovered will bring disrepute upon herself and her family, so when success and recognition beckons she is faced with a dilemma.

As for her hero, Lachlan, Lord Stathmore, well… Jane has met her match and goes to extraordinary lengths to try and outwit him. Needless to say she fails, and it is how Ms. Fox creates the pits and falls these two tumble into, that kept this reader engaged. So much so, that I would have like this story to be three times the length as, in places, it seemed the author skimmed the surface of the plots.

The author’s writing is vivid and compelling, I found myself totally engaged with Jane and her problems. I felt as though I was travelling at Jane’s shoulder throughout the story.

Ms. Fox is an author to watch out for and I would read more of her books.

Amanda, her young sister and her unconventional mother move to a small house in a remote village just before Christmas—and discover it lacks furniture and everything else they need. Charles, son of the local squire, bursts in to rescue them when he mistakes smoke from the clogged chimneys as a house fire. When she realizes his father is their landlord, Amanda drafts Charles into helping them, and he willingly complies with the requests of the beauty.

As the acquaintance between the families deepens, Amanda comes to realize that Charles may not be quite as bacon-brained as she assumed. When he rescues her from a drunken man, she then has to conspire with him to prevent worse consequences—all on Christmas Eve.

A Change of Address, by Kate Dolan, is a short, sweet Christmas Regency read. It may be short, it may be sweet, but it is fully formed, and peopled with believable characters, a few somewhat unbelievable plots that still work beautifully and a setting so vivid I could feel the damp chill of the new home.

It’s a home that Amanda, her younger sister and her mother, move to after her father’s death. A home so far removed from their accustomed luxury Amanda cannot help herself resenting her mother’s resolution not to accept their cousin’s offer to remain in their familiar surroundings. It doesn’t help when they discover their home is without furniture, let alone the most basic necessities to start their new life.

Enter Charles, son of their new landlord, in less than auspicious circumstances and you have the beginnings of a series of misunderstandings plots and subplots that Ms. Dolan weaves together with a gentle humour in keeping with her characters and her story.

While Amanda has strength of character, and her younger sister an equally strong sense of adventure, Amanda’s mother, and her motivations are not immediately clear. Once again, it is down to the author’s craftsmanship that the mother’s motives and personality are finally revealed.

Meanwhile Charles’ sister and father both play an integral part in the story and both come across strongly in their own personalities, as do the drunkard Plucket and his daughter, Mary.

Ms. Dolan packs a full-length story into a 77 page novella with her cleverly offered tools of suggestion, in the same way she crafts just enough description of her settings for the reader to fill them in to their own satisfaction.

I enjoyed that none of the characters were too perfect to be true. A Change of Address tugs at both laughter and tears and was a thoroughly enjoyable Christmas read.

Dear Reader,
I’ve been wishing for a miracle for my oldest boy, Stone, and this Christmas my prayers might just be answered!

Her name is Lark, and she’s here in Last Chance, looking into her father’s past-and stirring up a whole mess of trouble without meaning to. As the chief of police, Stone sure has his hands full trying to keep up with her. Ever since his wife died, Stone’s put everything into raising his daughters and dodging the Christ Church Ladies’ Auxiliary matchmakers. And it’s clear Lark has been through some trouble and could use a place to finally call home. I only hope Stone can let go of the past soon enough to keep her . . .

South Carolina and pine trees swaying in the wind.

Lark Chaikin’s plan (er, challenge) is a bit quirky, but reflects her late father’s desires. And, Sheriff Stone Rhodes is not unsympathetic, but the law is the law. The two are on opposite sides from the start. And lets face it: Stone Rhodes is about as unbending a lawman as one can imagine. However, both our main characters are complex and interesting people, and though they seem plainly at odds, both surprise us. Lark is sophisticated, but at heart, there’s a country girl, with a genuine feeling for a people. She is also determined to solve what starts as a minor mystery. Stone has that tough exterior you’d expect of a lawman; but there is a lot going on inside. His own grief makes him both less sociable but more understanding.

Almost by accident, they find they have a common goal in discovering the truth about a specific important event in town.

The community is thoroughly involved from the start. Folks take sides, doubt one another, question the facts. Gossip takes off … and though you want to believe in charming little southern communities, we find out pretty quickly that even at the holidays, you can’t count on the clichéd charming community to help out overall.

Ms. Ramsey’s writing style is straightforward and unobtrusive. Conversations are believable and move things right along. One or two changes in point-of-view were a tad abrupt, but (recognizing this is a personal bugaboo) I suspect this will not dismay most readers. The secondary characters also do certainly move things along – young David’s romance with Lizzie is a whole entertaining side, and past loves come into it too. There is also that touch of ‘magic’ any good Christmas story needs – an angel to oversee them all. Although Last Chance Christmas is a series, you don’t need to have read any of the previous novels to thoroughly enjoy this one.

Somehow, despite disagreements, expectations and whole-town angst, not to mention a troubling investigation, Ms. Ramsey will still make us feel the heartfelt charm of it all, and leave you happily in the spirit of Christmas. From the swaying pines through a myriad of decoration all the way to the pageant, this book has everything.

My recommendation: Curl up with this book and a nice batch of frosted cookies. On another note: Cover designer went over and above on this one: Colors and design are completely perfect; Last Chance Christmas will make a lovely gift — for Christmas or any time of the year.

When Madeline honors her mother’s dying wish and returns to The Chalet, she discovers the true secret of the old mansion; a seductive spirit whose undying love has waited decades to claim her for its own.

The Chalet is remarkable in that the time span of the story covered in only twenty-seven pages is immense. If there is a downside to this, it is that keeping the timeline and relevant characters straight was a little confusing at the beginning. But do not let that small inconvenience put you off from reading this story.

There are murders a-plenty, and disappearances; lots of those. Hatred and love fuel the tale as do betrayals. And yet it is an all-consuming love that drives the plot. A plot I found disturbing.

Ms. Fox Hall’s uses the first person point of view of Madeline, and we live the tale through Madeline’s eyes as she relives tales from the past, tales from her adoptive mother and information gleaned from a dairy. While I didn’t find this an easy read, I did find it a fascinating one. I was drawn into the past events and interested to discover if the outcome would work out as anticipated or not.

The author painted the exterior and interior of The Chalet so clearly I could almost smell the mouldy walls, hear the plaster falling from the ceiling and share Madeline’s shock when she came across some rooms so well preserved.

This is a supernatural story of extremes that will entrance enthusiasts of the paranormal genre. The author’s fluent writing style held this reader to the end.

The shocking news comes right before Christmas—Patience Mayhew’s beloved brother Jack was lost in the Battle of Nivelle. Since his son is but a toddler, Jack left his estate in trust to his best friend Stuart—the man who, years ago, broke Patience’s heart.

Stuart Marsh is just as shocked as Patience at Jack’s bequest. How can he possibly run Heatherfield when Jack’s widow resents him and sister detests him? But as he settles in and sees how much work Heatherfield needs, he realizes it’s his chance to prove himself to Patience all over again. He wants nothing more than to lift the burden from her shoulders and prove that Christmas miracles exist—and that love, real love, never truly fades away.

In Christmas Bequest, Ms. Miller offers laughter and tears, despair and hope, anger and joy and a burgeoning love in the middle of grief. In other words, the author offers up everything and still manages not to leave this reader feeling overwhelmed.

In such a short story Miss Miller has created depth of character, intrigue and misdirection. They are irritating family members in abundance and the hero’s ability to turn a potentially explosive situation are all interwoven with balance and perception.

I soon become clear there are plenty of family conflicts, both above and below the surface of this grieving family, and yet there is so much more. Ms. Miller takes each member of her cast and changes them completely by the time the reader turns the final page.

The only character that did not seem to fit the disposition preset for him was Lucinda’s brother. He did not live up to the reputation prescribed to him, which slightly confused me.

This story is set in the few days before and after Christmas and deals with the way each member of the family deal with the revelations that are exposed. Not only does each character change significantly, but Ms. Miller offers plausible reason for how these changes take place and why. To manage this in less than sixty pages take skill, and Ms. Miller appears to do it with ease, which of course is all part of her skilful writing abilities.

This is first Miller book I’ve read, but I’ll but looking out for more in the future.
