This is a great scary ghost story for young readers from author Mary Downing Hahn, who has a knack for giving readers a creepy story without frightening them.

This book is set in 19th century England and starts off in true creepy fashion with a stormy night, a long walk, and a scary looking old house. Florance is a orphan and did not think she had any relatives, then finds out she has a great uncle and great aunt who live in Crutchfeild Hall. The uncle sends for her and is delighted to have her staying with them, but the aunt is not. Florance bears a slight resemblance to Sophia, her cousin who died in a tragic accident almost a year earlier. She also learns that her cousin James, who is not well, never comes out of his room and it is off limits for her to visit.

As soon as Florance arrives she feels as if she is not alone in this creepy old house, but she shakes off the feeling because she figures that it is probably just due to being in a new home. Her uncle loves having her around but the aunt never wants anything to do with her, so she usually spends a lot of time in the sitting room reading. The book has a true nineteenth century feel with its old houses, spooky haunts and, of course, the nasty aunt who thinks Florance is nothing but bad even when she hasn’t done anything wrong. I would recommend this book to anyone who has young readers who love a good ghost story.

Daisy is still trying to find her place in Nightshade. It doesn’t help that she’s got psychic abilities she’s yet to discover. But it’s because of her still learning about herself that really made me identify with her. She’s not perfect and because of that, she’s more realistic. I loved her father. He’s been in captivity for quite a long time, but he’s still her daddy and still protective. For those of us who had over-protective folks, it’s easy to relate to her frustration. Some things worked out for Daisy, i.e. the Ryan front and it’s great to see she got something she really wanted—him.

My favorite character was the pig. Call me crazy, but anyone who has a pig for a pet is good people to me, even if they aren’t all that they appear to be (or perhaps are more than they appear to be).

This story has plenty of twists and turns that kept me in my seat. Even when I thought I knew what would happen next, I was off and it was a nice feeling.

If you want to read a story that’s not at all what it seems and a pleasure to open, then you need to read Dead is Just a Rumor. I give this book, 4 suns.

Can they band together enough to beat Uncle Silas at his own game? Just exactly what does he want them for anyway?

If you love clever fiction, get a copy of this incredibly fun book and follow along on their adventures. You’ll enjoy it. And, good news: There’s an epilogue at the end of the book that suggests there will be more coming in this series. That makes me happy. I’d like to see where the author goes from here with this story.

The author does a good job of expressing the emotions of the different characters and describing the different worlds they populate. Trust is a scarce commodity; all the races have reasons to be hesitant about interacting with each other.

There is no choice, though, when the dragon who “owns” Marisol has a spell put on him that makes him human. He’s the future king, and he has to have his own form to do that.

You meet the other races, see how much trickery there is in all their worlds, and watch how they weave their way through treacherous lands to finally locate the sorcerer who changed the dragon’s form. The lands and heritage of each world is vividly described, and you can relate to Marisol’s problem in trying to calm down an enraged dragon. Even in human shape, he’s dangerous.

Underlying this story is the dragon’s legend about how they will get their fire back. As this segment of the story ends, you can tell that there will be a sequel to this book continuing the story. I’m looking forward to reading that one also. Marisol and her dragon friend still have several challenges to conquer.

It’s hard to find stories written in the first person that read well, give you enough information and keep you from getting bored. Ms. Palmer does that very successfully in this book. Her characters evolve through the pages and the storyline has a couple of twists to it that will keep your attention and make you wonder just where she’s going with this tale. The characters are strong, have powers, use them for both good and evil, and everyone is after Andee’s boyfriend.

This story reminded me a bit of the Twilight series, however this book was better. Werewolves and witches and sorcerers may be a bit of stretch, but the characters’ personalities shine and you can stretch your imagination to believe such things might happen. I really enjoyed this read, and believe (and hope!) there will be another book in the series. After all, the ending just make you want to pick up another chapter and keep going. I bet the author gives us that satisfaction soon.

This novel is an exciting read with just enough magic to make intriguing and enough challenges for the chosen to make you want to follow along through the next life changing event with them.

This well-paced fantasy novel is filled with cat lore, and that really drew me in. These cats act as cats do, but have extraordinary intelligence. The humans act as humans do and sometimes make you wonder just how much they think about their actions.

There are two warring kingdoms, two kings who hate the enemy, and a prince in each kingdom who has taken an oath of fealty and is sworn to protect the kingdom and fight the enemy as necessary. There’s hate, bitterness and regret, along with love, fierce loyalty, and a determination not to quit.

An underlying theme in this book is that war is not good and that differences can be overcome if one tries hard enough. The characters are strong, the action moves along quickly and surely, and danger lurks at every corner.

When the two princes meet accidently during their wartime adventures, both hiding in the same cave, the give and take between the two enemies forges the beginnings of a friendship. You see the tension, the fear, the uncertainty between the two sworn enemies. And you see them begin to realize that working together will be better than trying to succeed on their own.

This action-packed adventure is a good read. You aren’t really sure how it’s all going to turn out with so much mutual hate and mistrust. There may be a sequel – there’s more that could be explored in this world of cats and men.
