Addy is one of my favorite characters that I have run across in a while. She has a strong personality that affects those that are around her. She is independent, fiery tempered, athletic, and strong willed. She doesn’t let anything that happens to her keep her from her plans. She refuses to give up, letting her situation wear her down to a shell of whom she was as many have done.

When Addy wakes up, she finds herself in a strange box with a naked man spooning her. True to her personality, she quickly runs away from him, noticing that she was also naked and had a strange metal choker on her. The man, Max, watches in astonishment and bemusement as she looks frantically around to find a way out not believing that there was no way to escape.

Poor Max knows that he must be the one to break the bad news to her of where she was and what was expected of her. He informs her that she was abducted by aliens called Hyboreans and she was now considered a breeder. As he suspected she freaked out and didn’t believe a word he said, thinking he was crazy. She did settle down after a while and Max did his best to seduce her.

Max is another very complex character. He was taken against his will from Earth like Addy, but his situation was different. He and some of his college friends decided to go camping one weakened and he gave into his younger brother’s pleas to come with him, assuring their mom he would take care of him. Things were going okay until he thought he heard some bears heading towards their camp. He threw a rock at one of them to stop it, but it turned out to be a Hyborean. The horror of it was he had no idea what happened to the others until his first survival game. Max was a different person back then, like Addy he was full of fire and the hope that he can get back to earth.

Max’s life and personality changed in one instant in the first survival games he went through as he ended up killing his younger brother, not recognizing him as he had grown up. It just kept getting worse as the poor man was forced to kill one man after another to survive in each consecutive year. He was often starved and beaten for the least transgression. What made his life unbearable was the fact that the Hyboreans can Reawaken those who have died, not allowing him to just rest. He is forced to compete time and time again in the Survival Races which ate away at his humanity.

He calls the Gladiatorial side of him the beast as it has no care of anyone else’s life but his own. We see this side of him during the first Survival Games that Addy was watching. As he became older, he was sold from the most important Hyborean, Xanthrag who owns the best gladiators as he was a big time breeder who also owned the HUBREC (the area where all the humans live in), and half the humans.

Now how to explain the Hyboreans. They are large furry beasts that have superior technology and medical benefits. They do not speak out loud, they are telepathic. They are unable to talk to the humans, but they can understand the tone of voice and body language. They are also able to send soothing thoughts to their humans, and as Duncan told her, each person feels what comforts them. She finds out from Duncan; the man and his daughter Tess live in a cabin who are helping her adjust to her new situation.

This story, although rather convoluted is a way to show how one person with the right spirit and determination can make her own fate. It also shows that a man who feels dead inside can be brought back to life when he finds just the right woman and a son to fight for. Using only their wits and strength to escape when nobody thought they could. It also helps to have friends in the right place and the ability to use every available resource. This is a great book but may take some time to read.

It was easy to forget that these tales were about ten separate boys because every one of them had the same naive, mischievous, and insatiably curious personality. Not only that, the background details of their lives were either nonexistent or so vague that one boy’s life story often blended into the next. Even their names were a mystery. I’ve never read a collection like this and truly enjoyed jumping from one world to the next while knowing that the protagonists would always be comfortingly predictable.

One thing I do wish the author had been more clear about were the time periods everything was set in. Some characters seemed to live centuries ago when orphans were left to live on the streets in large cities and fended for themselves from very tender ages. Other characters had a much more modern feel to them. Even these were educated guesses, though, as the narrator was always reluctant about explaining background information clearly. That made it hard at times to picture who the protagonists were and why they were so alone in the world.

There were so many genres represented in this book that I’d be hard-pressed to narrow it down to only one. Some of the boys lived in gentle fantasy worlds. Others were more firmly rooted in the horror, paranormal, or mystery genres. It was pretty interesting to move between all of these different types of storytelling as well to shift from what appeared to be the past and the present.

A Boy in a Park: Tales of Wonder and Despair was a mesmerizing collection that I’d recommend to anyone who loves being given a lot of freedom to come up with their own interpretations about what’s happening in a plot.

They are on a mission to destroy and kill a tribal leader to Al Qaeda, Tayseer Al-Lidi, who earned himself a spot on the American’s Most Wanted Terrorists list. The mission went great for a while, until it all went to hell while they were trying to escape. As they were about to depart, Delta Alpha or more commonly known as Dumb Ass, ignored his orders to board and went back to Chris. He ended up saving him from several gunshots and an explosion. The worst thing that ever happened to Chris was seeing his dog so limp and injured saving him from certain death.

I enjoy the character of Chris, a man of extreme loyalty, courage, bravery, and the ability to know what he wants and to pursue it until the end. A great example of his loyalty is when he finds out that Dumb Ass was injured seriously but luck was on his side as none of the bullets had entered any essential organs, but he is now suffering from PTSD. He would not be able to continue being a military working dog and Chris was given two options, put Dumb Ass to sleep or adopt him. For Chris it was a no brainer, he would not leave his partner and made the hard decision to adopt him. He knows that it is not going to be easy trying to help his dog and himself adapt to civilian life. On top of that, he had to decide his own future as he is wondering if he should re-enlist. You can tell that he is getting tired of going through certain death situations and the last mission opened his eyes. They figure that their last mission went so wrong because there was a mole hiding somewhere in the CIA. Yet, she has a big heart and a ton of courage and figures with the research she has done and with the help of Chris, whose has been with his dog for two years and knows him in and out, she’ll be able to help. She also found out she was pregnant and even though it was unplanned, she is going to do the best she can raising her child on her own.

When Chris and Samantha meet each other for the first time, you can already get the sense of attraction, especially when he gave her a nickname–Red–after only a few moments. It was also sweet seeing how Chris handled Dumb Ass when they were at the vet for the first time, she could see the love a trust between them, breaking her heart a little. Dumb Ass also seems to take a liking to her when he first meets her, even giving a lick to her.

I absolutely adore Chris’s family, as each on had been adopted by the Gonzalez family and are extremely close. It seems that everyone that meets the family is drawn into the love that overflows the home and the ties that bind each brother to each other. Their mother makes sure her sons know how much she cares for them and so does their father. For example, when he went to their house, he was enveloped a much-needed hug, spoiled with a great dinner, and watching sports with his father with a beer and getting the gossip of all his other brothers lives.

Things became interesting when Chris comes back home to his cabin and his gut and instincts let him know something was wrong. He feels so wary that he ends up calling squad leader, Dean Davis, and asking if any of the team had checked in. Chris is drawn into an idea of building a special unit to keep other special operatives from going through the same issues that his team had. As it turns out his instincts were right when he spots Tayseer around the town, but his frustration his palpable when he couldn’t pinpoint an exact location.

Luckily, his brother, Dwayne is a private investigator which comes in handy when Samantha’s ex-husband shows up. Again, Chris’s emotions get the better of him and even though he can’t place what they all meant; he did know that he couldn’t lose her.

It’s surprising how well Dumb Ass starts to heal, with Samantha and Chris’s attention and love. Chris finds it amusing and happy that Dumb Ass has taken such a shine to her and is often seen to protect her.

After that Chris brings her to his cabin and the rest of his team descends upon him. Again, the love and adoration are shown in every moment they share. His family also takes her in, just like the other strays that come along. You can feel her emotions as she feels what she has been missing for so long, the protection and the love of a strong family that enfolds her.

The only thing that I have a problem with this story is how fast the relationship develops between Chris and Samantha. They both realize it though so that does help but in only a few weeks they end up in bed together, which surprised me especially considering her past. It’s also amazing how fast Dumb Ass heals.

This is a wonderful story that shows how a dog that needs help can bring two people together. It also shows how a woman can gain her own independence after a horrible tragedy. She also ends up helping Chris overcome his own problems, to me they bring strength to each other.  A wonderful story for those that love dogs and a wonderful family that sticks together no matter the circumstances.

One of the things I liked the most about this novella was how sensible the main characters were when faced with something frighting they that couldn’t begin to understand. I couldn’t stop reading Axis Mundi: The Strange Disappearance of John Runyon until I’d finished it in one setting. This is the perfect thing to pick up if you’re interested in getting lost in a story for a while.

There is a lot that goes on in this book. You have Dakota’s ex-boss, new jobs, missing brothers, family life/tension, and not forgetting a custody battle. It is a fast-paced story with insta-lust/love between our two main characters. There is little to no angst between the two of them. All the angst is caused by circumstances going on around them, rather than them themselves.

I have enjoyed every book I’ve ever read by Morticia Knight but this one is not one I would read again. Part of the problem for me is that it is the next in the series after a brilliant read. Searching for Shelter was the best book in the series and then Strip Search followed it and it just didn’t hit the same buttons. Although I am a fan of epilogues this one felt like it was a way to give the reader answers without having to go into too much detail. Just accept and it’s done.

This is still a great series and I loved reading about how other characters were getting on in their lives. I enjoyed Reed and Dakota’s story but just not as much. I still have no hesitation in recommending it though!

First, I strongly advise reading the first book in the series, The Nexus Mirror, before reading The Legend of Solis. Many of the characters and events are connected. I fear readers will be lost if they try to jump into the series at this point. It is definitely worth the time to go back and read the first book!

As with the first novel, Mr. Michael has chosen to tell the story from multiple viewpoints. Again, this works very well to show the story unfolding in different places from different characters’ viewpoints before bringing it all together at the end. All the transitions are clearly marked and never confusing.

This installment also introduces quite a few new characters. I still had the opportunity to catch up with characters from The Nexus Mirror, but I’ll admit I was hoping to see more of my favorites. I would have liked to spend more time following Yuran in particular. His story was quite compelling in the first book, and he became one of my favorite characters. While I did get to spend some time reading about Yuran in this book, his chapters had a bittersweet feeling to them this time around.

It is great to see the Enlai working together. They have spent so much time fighting each other in the past, but now is the time to put aside their differences. They will need to work together to face a threat greater than anything they’ve ever seen. I must warn readers sensitive to violence that this book does contain graphic violence, a lot of fighting, and large battle scenes. The fate of main characters never feels secure. I admit I teared up a time or two as I read!

I’m glad I had the opportunity to continue reading this series. The ending of this novel is very satisfying, but the story is far from over. There are still evil forces at work that have yet to reveal themselves. I can’t wait to see what happens next!

The romantic plot is easy reading but there is another minor plot that comes up which has bits of mystery and suspense. What kept me going was Keely and Evan. Keely is an independent no nonsense “it’s my way or no way” kind of gal. She’s certainly not submissive. Evan is a businessman, a Tech Geek, a Scotsman and a billionaire. He’s strong and very persistent. There is a conflict about an age difference between both of them and Keely is unwilling to take a chance due to that. Fortunately, Evan is determined to work through her resistance.

I loved reading Keely and Evan’s conversations more than anything in this. Insatiable in a Kilt is an all-rounder – a very well written and wonderfully descriptive romance.

Fast paced!

I didn’t realize Marcia Clark, yep, that Marcia Clark had written so many novels. I remember her as the prosecutor in the case of the century. So I had to pick this book up. I’m glad I did. The writing flows well and kept me interested throughout. I hadn’t read the others in this series, but Sam Brinkman is an intense character. The ending satisfied and I’m interested in reading the other books in this series.

Sam is a crack legal mind. She knows her stuff and is tenacious. Her boyfriend is in trouble, his mother’s been scammed and the world sure looks bleak–all seemingly because Sam took a vacation. Crazy, huh?

There are a couple of plot points throughout this story and the author does a good job of weaving them together. It seemed a bit odd and almost too easy when some of the pieces seemed to fall into Sam’s lap. She also has a tendency to skew the lines when it comes to staying totally legal. That said, it showed her tenacity. The author also manages to blur the lines, too. Things aren’t black and white in life and neither are they in this book. I rather liked that the author kept the plot human in that respect.

If you’re looking for something in the vein of John Grisham or Scott Turow, this might not be what you’re wanting, but if you’re willing to take this book on it’s own merits–and I highly suggest you do–then you won’t be disappointed. A gripping read. Recommended.

The place had strict rules and those that broke them were punished. Ginny is a waitress who works there and asked Zach if he would take Deborah under his wing and teach her self-defense.

Deborah was a strong woman with a great career. She’s well-known and famous. After the incident she has no self confidence panic attacks and unable to stay anywhere by herself. She is haunted by what happened. Enter Zach, whom Ginny asked to teach her friend self-defense to help regain her self confidence. When he first meets her there is an instant attraction he feels for her. Being a shapeshifter, they feel that there was only one person for them. When he meets her he knows that she is the one for him. He makes sure that he does his best to teach her self-defense. I enjoyed the way he was tender and careful until he earns her trust. He seduces her with soft kisses and touches, never pushing her for more. Their lovemaking was hot and tender, and Zach made sure that she had the opportunity to say no at any time. This shows the bond that grew between them. Some parts of the story happened a bit fast for me, but might be fine for other readers. The author did a great job in showing people how strong they can be after a tragedy.

This is a great read.

The world building was fantastic. Ms. Kuchinskas thought of everything from what people ate, to why they avoided going outdoors during daylight hours as much as possible, to how everyone stayed as healthy as possible in this future version of Earth that had experienced multiple deadly pandemics over the years. I was fascinated by how many parts of the average person’s schedule was different from life in our era. The only thing better than this was looking for the ways in which life was surprisingly similar as well.

Just like I mentioned in my review of the first installment in this series, I would have liked to see more character development. Finder was an incredibly interesting guy who lived in a society filled with medical and technological advancements that people in the early twenty-first century can only dream of. There was a lot of room here to show how he grew and changed as a result of the wondrous and terrible things he experienced. If there had been more evidence of him responding to his environment in this way, I would have gone for the full five-star rating without a doubt.

The plot twists were well written, especially when it came to the mystery subplot. While this work was firmly rooted in the science fiction genre, it did a good job of incorporating some of the things I’d expect to see happen in a mystery novel as well. Figuring out what might happen next and comparing my predictions to what actually occurred was a great deal of fun.

I’d recommend reading Chimera Catalyst before diving into book two of this series. Singularity Syndrome should be read by anyone who wonders what the future could hold for the human race.
