James Simpson’s rakish ways have finally caught up with him. Snared in a scandal that for once is not his doing, he is forced to do the honorable thing and offer marriage to the lady. But her father won’t agree to a dowry unless James can also find a suitable husband for the lady’s elder sister-quiet, reserved Lucinda Cardington. As James gets to know the vibrant, charming, and passionate woman behind Lucinda’s shy exterior, he comes to the distressing realization that he doesn’t want her in anyone’s arms but his own…

This is a fun story and it was a quick read. I finished it in one sitting and enjoyed it very much. I was especially drawn to Lucinda–the older daughter. She was not as socially adept as her younger sister, but she had so much more depth of character that I think she would have been a good friend. Unlike a lot of women at the time, she has no desire in getting married, mostly because she doesn’t think anyone would want her.

It’s an inspy romance without being preachy. The faith of these characters isn’t something they hit you over the head with–it’s the way they live; i.e., Lucinda working at Caring House for Wayward Ladies.

James is a cheerful, fun rake with his own set of scruples. While he is an inveterate flirt, he would never compromise an innocent. He, also, has no intention of being married–until one day he is caught in a dilemma and forced to become engaged to Lucinda’s younger sister–with the strict admonition from the parents that he also find a husband for Lucinda.

Seeing how they slowly fall in love with each other, while at the same time being forced by their own code of ethics to do nothing about it makes this story work. And I have to say I absolutely love the ending. I could so see this being made into a movie and it would be so much fun!

A MAN CONDEMNED . . .

Falsely accused of murder and mute from a near-fatal beating, Apollo Greaves, Viscount Kilbourne has escaped from Bedlam. With the Crown’s soldiers at his heels, he finds refuge in the ruins of a pleasure garden, toiling as a simple gardener. A DESPERATE WOMAN . . .

London’s premier actress, Lily Stump, is down on her luck when she’s forced to move into a scorched theatre with her maid and small son. But she and her tiny family aren’t the only inhabitants—a silent, hulking beast of a man also calls the charred ruins home. Yet when she catches him reading her plays, Lily realizes there’s more to this man than meets the eye.

OUT OF ASH, DESIRE FLARES

Though scorching passion draws them together, Apollo knows that Lily is keeping secrets. When his past catches up with him, he’s forced to make a choice: his love for Lily . . . or the explosive truth that will set him free.

Actress and single mother Lily Stump had only one theatre where she could perform. When that theatre burned down, it left her in dire straits. Until it’s rebuilt, she has no income, and, so is living with her son and servant in a few of the rooms left standing and barely habitable. Her son, Indio, enjoys playing on the grounds, and has become fascinated with the man in charge of designing the gardens. This large, mute, man is none other than Apollo Greaves, Viscount Kilbourne, who is there to hide out, as he’s a wanted man. Years ago, Apollo was falsely accused of murder, and then committed to Bedlam by a relative. He was all but starved there, and horribly abused. As he tried to help a fellow inmate from being attacked, he was beaten and had his throat crushed, and has been unable to speak since. He later was aided in escaping from Bedlam, and he came here to his friend and business partner to seek refuge.

The little boy, Indio, tells his mother that he has seen a monster in the gardens. He’s referring to Apollo, with his great height, huge shoulders and craggy features. Lily goes to investigate and encounters Apollo, who can’t speak in order to answer her questions. She believes him to be dimwitted, but soon comes to believe him harmless, and Indio invites him for dinner. Eventually, they develop a sort of friendship. As Lily and Apollo become more familiar with each other, they discover that the other has secrets and hidden depths. This unlikely couple has an explosive chemistry and they become lovers. I am a sucker for someone who has been falsely accused and imprisoned. Despite all he has endured, Apollo has retained his humanity. He is loving and gentle with Lily and Indio. He has an artistic soul, and is pouring it into the creation of the new theatre’s gardens. He wants to regain his life, but not for the sake of becoming an idle aristocrat. He has humor and honor, and I half fell in love with him myself. Lily is smart, loyal, and strong, but not hard. Their love story was beautifully developed and romantic, while the mystery of who framed Apollo had me reading as fast as I could to see the resolution. Elizabeth Hoyt also includes a little snippet at the beginning of each chapter. It’s usually part of a fairy tale, which parallels her story. These snippets are well thought out, and add to the enjoyment of the book. I found myself looking forward to the resolution of the secondary story almost as much as the first.

I highly recommend this stellar addition to the amazing Maiden Lane series. If you like books with characters who are a cut above the ordinary, breathtaking romance, and page turning excitement, this beast may be just what you’re looking for.

He took her life, but left her alive.

Three years ago, reporter Kate Johnson was the first victim—and only survivor—of the Broadcast Butcher. Scarred both physically and psychologically by the brutal serial killer, Kate lives life on the run, knowing that one day, he will find her and finish what he started.

The only way to stay sane is to detach, but the second the Broadcast Butcher case crosses his desk, Hayden knows this is the case that might just cost him his soul. To catch this vicious murderer before he strikes again, Hayden must find Kate and earn her trust. For it’s her darkest secrets that hold the key to stopping this madman once and for all . . .

No matter what genre you enjoy, romance, mystery or suspense, I think you’ll find something to enjoy in The Broken. The opening chapter drew me in, threw me off course a little too, but we’re quickly introduced to Kate Johnson, the serial killer’s only surviving victim, and Smokey Joe, a blind Vietnam war veteran who was actually my favorite character in the book. Both his and Kate’s survival seemed bound together and when you cheered for one you cheered for the other.

As much as she’s been able to, Kate’s run away from the horror and begun a new life as Smokey’s minder, but like all good stories there has to be conflict, and in The Broken that’s in the form of the discovery of another woman killed by The Butcher, the serial killer who attacked Kate. Also, into Kate’s world walks FBI Agent Hayden Reed, who has issues of his own.

Kate thinks her brother is the killer but as the story unfolds, you along with Kate realize all is not what it seems. Bodies start turning up and also body parts, and there are lots of twists and turns that keep you reading. While the identity of the true killer wasn’t a sure thing, I had a pretty good idea who it was and was intrigued to see if I was right.

And there’s the relationship between Kate and Hayden. Both come to it with huge issues but you feel that they’re right for another and the only person who can heal each other’s wounds.

All the secondary characters were fun too. The pacing is fast and towards the end you find yourself just wanting to finish reading the story to figure out if your inclinations were right.

I’m not sure if the author is intending to write more about Kate and Hayden and yes, of course Smokey Joe, but I’d like to see where their next adventure takes them.

Twenty years ago Maximus Batten witnessed the brutal murders of his parents. Now the autocratic Duke of Wakefield, he spends his days ruling Parliament. But by night, disguised as the Ghost of St. Giles, he prowls the grim alleys of St. Giles, ever on the hunt for the murderer. One night he finds a fiery woman who meets him toe-to-toe—and won’t back down . . .

Artemis Greaves toils as a lady’s companion, but hiding beneath the plain brown serge of her dress is the heart of a huntress. When the Ghost of St. Giles rescues her from footpads, she recognizes a kindred spirit-and is intrigued. She’s even more intrigued when she realizes who exactly the notorious Ghost is by day . . .

Artemis makes a bold move: she demands that Maximus use his influence to free her imprisoned brother-or she will expose him as the Ghost. But blackmailing a powerful duke isn’t without risks. Now that she has the tiger by the tail, can she withstand his ire-or the temptation of his embrace?

The Duke of Midnight certainly starts off with a clever and unusual twist with me never suspecting that I was actually watching the future hero and heroine meet. It was adventurous, slightly out of the ordinary and it immediately showcased that the heroine isn’t fresh from the school room and the hero has a dark secret. The start of the novel is promising and I’m happy to say it carries forth for the rest of the book.

I liked the dynamics between Artemis and Maximus, the Duke of Wakefield. I enjoyed their banter, their slow and unusual courtship and how they eventually came to grips with their feelings for each other. She was first to admit it, he was last. Figures. Her realization that she loves the hero is a bittersweet thing and it prompts her to make some hard and emotional choices. Artemis’ decision isn’t a grand gesture but it’s heartfelt and a reader sees that clearly. Maximus on the other hand, and being a man, needs a rather dramatic and suspenseful act to get him to take that final step to let go of the past and grab for his future. The sort of droll, matter-of-fact dialogue that occurs between some secondary characters after the action had me laughing. It was just so … conversational and understated, I giggled.

I guess this is a long series in the making, the sixth book I believe. I have not read any of the previous books so I can guarantee this is a solid standalone read. I’m tickled because not only does it raise my curiosity of what came before, but there is already a hook for the next book. I may not have read the books in the past, but I sure am interested in following it into the future. Any hero named Apollo has got to be fascinating – must have something to do with adoring Apollo from the original Battlestar Galactica – they all seem to have hero complexes.

The dogs were a cute touch and I enjoyed the roles they played. Basically, animals are a good judge of character so it was telling. I liked some of the secondary characters that supported Artemis. Frankly, I didn’t expect her to have that much support so it made me feel good to see it.

When Artemis and Maximus succumb to their physical passion, it’s steamy writing but the characters’ emotions are never far away. I can see that the author used their sexy encounters to further their romance and attraction, and the fact that it’s done so well is a plus.

The villain was a scoundrel but not a lot of attention was paid to his badness. I know what he did in the past was horrible, and what he currently did in the story was equally noxious, but the descriptions or actions never were delved in deep enough to send shivers up my spine, or gasp in horror or genuinely feel like he was a real threat. He was more a pompous toad with a criminal bent. There were some distractions and misleading clues so the mystery that haunted Maximus took a while to unravel but I never felt the ‘evil’ of the villain so his finally being revealed and addressed drew from me a tepid response at best.

Oh, and Penelope annoyed me. How anyone can look upon that ditherhead and feel fondness I will never know. For me she was the equivalent of a Regency Valley Girl with less to talk about. Ugh. She made Artemis look like a cerebral giant.

On the whole, The Duke of Midnight is a crowd pleaser. It’s not overly dark but has enough suspense and drama to keep the pages turning. Maximus and Artemis have wonderful chemistry that insured I enjoyed reading their story. There were enough wonderful secondary characters to make their world a fascinating place to visit and an as yet unsolved mystery that makes me want to read more. I liked the pace of the novel, the dialogue and the plot momentum. If you have a few hours straight to just sit back and read, The Duke of Midnight is a wonderful choice to spend time with. It’s very entertaining.

Michelle Maxwell has just blown her future with the Secret Service. Against her instincts, she led a presidential candidate out of her sight to comfort a grieving widow. Then, behind closed doors, the politician whose safety was her responsibility vanished into thin air.

Living a new life on a quiet lake in central Virginia, Sean King knows how the younger agent feels. He’s been there before. In an out-of-the-way hotel eight years earlier, the hard-charging Secret Service man allowed his attention to be diverted for a split second. And the presidential candidate Sean was protecting was gunned down before his eyes.

Now Michelle and Sean are about to see their destinies converge. She has become obsessed with Sean’s case. And he needs a friend—especially since a series of macabre killings has brought him under suspicion and prompted the reappearance of a seductive woman he’s tried hard to forget.

As the two discredited agents enter a maze of lies, secrets, and deadly coincidences, they uncover a violence that shattered their lives were really a long time in the making – and are a long way from over.

Michelle Maxwell has just made a decision that will change her life forever, ending her stint with the Secret Service. It’s set her on a new path she never expected. Sean King has been there and done that once already. As a former Secret Service agent himself, he’s screwed up and recovered, making a happy new life for himself. However, when King and Maxwell’s worlds collide, more than sparks are going to fly.

Sean King is a fascinating and aggravating man. He’s been where Michelle is now and is both sympathetic to her plight as well as slightly obnoxious at the same time. Despite his ability to completely rile her, I loved him from the moment I met him. He carries the arrogance gained while working for the Secret Service, a trait you no doubt need to keep important people safe, but tempers it with humor and seductiveness that not even calm, cool, and collected Michelle Maxwell can resist. Sean is also intelligent, resourceful, and loyal, three things Michelle needs now more than anything.

On the other hand, Michelle Maxwell is young and upcoming in the Service, right until the moment she makes a fatal mistake. By letting a presidential candidate out of her sight for mere moments, he’s kidnapped and her life comes to a standstill. To her credit, she doesn’t curl up in a ball and cry. Quite the opposite. With the help of Sean King and his years of experience, they come together and discover more than what happened to Michelle’s charge.

Split Second was an intense ride taking us through both Michelle’s current situation and running headlong into the incident many years past that caused Sean’s stint with the Service to come to an abrupt end. The way that the two stories come together in the end is both satisfying and exciting. If this first novel in the King & Maxwell series is any indication, the ones that follow are going to be one heck of a roller coaster of action and suspense. I am eagerly anticipating getting to know these two better in the future.

The start of a fun new series and a great ride!

I like a book that holds my attention and makes me want to keep reading, despite the late hour. This was one such book. I had to know what would happen. Lily Dalton’s writing flowed well and she engrossed me with the fine tale.

This is a book of second chances. Lady Sophia’s husband is known for being a bad boy. She shouldn’t want to love him. Shouldn’t want his touch. And yet, she does. I respected her desires. A first love is a very strong love. Ms. Dalton conveys this emotion in the story quite well. What I had a slight issue with was Sophia’s tendency to believe rumors rather than find out the truth. I liked her, but I wished she’d have been a tad stronger.

Vane is interesting as well. He’s got a reputation and in the Ton, everything is gossiped about. I felt for him because yeah, he was a man about town before the marriage, but he actually seemed pretty upstanding. The fact that he wanted his wife back–especially after what happened–was quite nice. I won’t give away any spoilers, but I could understand why these two broke apart and why they had a hard time reconnecting.

I did enjoy the ending and how these two sorted through the rest of the book. It’s worth the read. Grab a copy.

What was his true mission? Could Tyler be the next target?

Sean and Michelle soon realize that they’ve stumbled on to something bigger and more treacherous than anyone could have imagined. And as their hunt for the truth leads them relentlessly to the highest levels of power and to uncovering the most clandestine of secrets, Sean and Michelle are determined to help and protect Tyler–though they may pay for it with their lives.

When they almost run down a teenaged boy in the rain one night, Sean and Michelle stumble into more than just a boy running from a bit of bad news. What starts out as a seemingly cut and dried story too familiar to them all – boy loses father in Afghanistan – turns into something much more involved than either could have ever expected. Will this be the case that finally proves to be too much for the former secret service agents or will they find a way to pull it off in style? Not even they know for sure this time.

Sean King and Michelle Maxwell are both former secret service agents turned private investigators, each for their own reasons. Despite their glaring differences – Sean’s a neat freak and Michelle’s a slob, for one – they make these differences work for them by using them to spur the other into thinking outside the box. Their deep friendship, insatiable curiosity, and thirst for seeing justice done makes their partnership a successful one.

Probably one of the best part of this novel is the reversal of stereotypes in that Michelle is the one who is the one you need to be afraid of and not Sean. She’s the tougher fighter and she’s also the better shot. She’s also just a touch on the crazy side, too, if you ask me, but that’s all just part of her enduring charm.

This is my first novel by this author, but I can guarantee you that it will not be my last. Not only does he create loveable, endearing characters that stick in your mind long after you’ve finished, but he also has a way of infusing humor into the most intense and serious situations, giving the novel a nice balance. The intense action coupled with a well-developed and highly believable storyline combine for an exciting read.

Her boss sends her to the town to explain why. She worried about leaving his nephew behind since he is trying to take her job away from her. She should have worried more about the residents of Christmas…

This is the first book I’ve read by this author and I’m very impressed by her character development, sense of humor and plotting. This story makes sense and has a cute romance between Madison and the sheriff intertwined with the nephew’s plan to own the town.

If you enjoy tough old women and silly old men, this is a story for you. Madison comes into town driving a rental rig on ice, tries to avoid hitting a deer and manages to knock over their big Santa sign welcoming people to town. They’ve already named her the “Grinch Who Killed Christmas” and now she’s telling them she killed Santa because she was trying to avoid hitting Rudolph. With humor like this, how can you not laugh?

The story is filled with ridiculous plots and an extended stay for Madison in this small town she hates. The longer she stays, the more the people touch her heart. The nephew may have evil intentions, but she doesn’t.

If you’ve ever worked on a big project, it’s not unusual for the people who are opposed to change their minds about midway through the discussion. Sometimes the presenter does the same thing. The author uses that concept to take those who hated Madison from the beginning and changing them into becoming her supporters. The ending is particularly gratifying.

Ms. Mason wraps this book up as if it were a very prettily wrapped package. Why not open the pages and have a Christmas present early?

Sophie Darrow finds she was wrong about that assumption when she’s pulled into the spirit realm, complete with an Underworld, on her first day at college. Adrian, the mysterious young man who brought her there, simply wants her to taste a pomegranate.

Soon, though she returns to her regular life, her mind begins exploding with dreams and memories of ancient times; of a love between two Greeks named Persephone and Hades. But lethal danger has always surrounded the immortals, and now that she’s tainted with the Underworld’s magic, that danger is drawing closer to Sophie.

This is not the usual rehashing of Greek myth in modern terms. It deviates from the main myth so much it creates something new and unique. What if Hades and Persephone loved each other? Ringle re-imagines Greek myth to create this new reality and with it comes a new dimension and facet to the Gods and Goddesses. I was worried this would be a dated idea, something reused beyond passing interest, but I was delightfully wrong.

From the start the book surprised me with its modern setting and problems and then continued to excite me with different dimensions. Gunshots and killer cults are not the norm in fantasy fiction but they work here, partly because the prose is so well written. Molly Ringle has a tight grasp of tension and employs it to keep a reader turning pages. I only took one break from the book when sleep blurred the lines. This is an unusual skill.

In addition, the plot is believable, a mixture of old religion and new. Reincarnation, old Gods and love – purposeful Western and Eastern influences. It is the stuff of an endless romance and provides this beautifully.

Sophie, unlike many paranormal heroines of late, does not take the supernatural way out immediately. She thinks things over, decides what is best for her and takes her time to find the truth of what is going on. She is no fan girl flying by the seat of her pants. She is well educated and has a solid background in plants and trade. Even this background is believable and adds to her solid character. The wish for more spice has been mentioned among celebrity chefs, for instance.

The magic unravels slowly, revealing more and more of this other world and past lives as the story goes on but this never drags. The more that is discovered, the more Sophie and her skills fit into this new world and show her belonging. The only issue I would have with the plot and Sophie’s place in it is the quick dismissal of an individual as a suspected informer. I noticed it and logged it in my mind as something more suspect. Perhaps if she was overlooked for realistic reasons or after a more in depth discussion, this would be more believable and add more disbelief to a later crisis.

However, the novel is not faulty. It even has an impact beyond the story for me. It brings new questions about the underworld, shared language and shared minds or knowledge. There is two sides (or more) to every story and every person and Hades is a character which has had a thorough exploration here. He is no longer creepy (after the first few chapters), nor evil. He is just a man interested in things most the world would deem macabre. Is down bad and up good? Who really knows until we have experienced it? It is a very special ability for an author to subtly encourage me to question my beliefs and Ringle has managed it. She opens the afterlife up for open minds to question – not an easy task.

In short, Molly Ringle has crafted an excellent piece of fiction. She fuses a murder mystery vibe of killer cults and disappearances to create a believable tension and downside to the seemingly problem-less new dimension and paranormal reality created. She couples this with a steamy, age old romance which has enough sexual tension for centuries. Then, we have a story – one which encourages me to cuddle under the covers, knees up, and enjoy the spicy details and tentative renewal of passion.
