Who Decides What is Human…The

Corporations, Clones or Chimera?

When Finder is hired to locate charismatic, green-haired Miraluna Rose, it seems like an easy job. Crack into corporate databases, brew up some biologics to enhance his thinking, and get the job done with the help of the Parrot, a bird/dog chimera with the finest traits of both species.

The search takes Finder and the Parrot to the sun-broiled streets of Laxangeles, the canals of Seattle and the weirdly mutated vegetation of the Area. It turns out that it’s not a simple missing-person case after all.

To help the ArcoTypes fight ReMe, Finder and the Parrot will need the help of a couple of sympathetic AIs, the CEO of the world’s largest advertising company and a posse of highly modded, celebrity-crazed media kids.

This exciting adventure is a must read for anyone concerned about where our world and humanity is possibly headed…

Sometimes science causes just as many problems as it solves.

The world building was wonderful. Ms. Kuchinskas’ vision of what life will be like in a few generations was as chilling as it was fascinating. I especially liked her descriptions of how climate change seriously affected the lives of everyone in this society no matter how wealthy or well-connected they were. They painted a very thorough picture of how a culture attempted to rebuild itself after nearly being completely destroyed. What impressed me even more was that this was only one of about a dozen examples of the author stretching her ideas out until they’d reached their logical conclusion. She made me feel like I’d really traveled to the future, and that made it impossible for me to stop reading.

I would have liked to see a little more time spent on character development. While Finder’s personality was described with plenty of detail, there wasn’t enough attention paid to how he changed over the course of the plot. The changes I noticed in him were pretty subtle even though he experienced some pretty exciting, frightening, and unimaginable things during his adventures. There were so many opportunities for him to grow as a person. Had he taken advantage of a few more of them, this book would have easily earned a much higher rating from me as I loved everything else about it.

One of the things I enjoyed the most about the mystery was how much effort it required from me to find any major clues at all. I hadn’t know that kind of storyline was waiting for me when I first began reading, so it was even more fun than usual to shift the way I interpreted certain scenes and start paying attention to anything that might give me a hint about who Miraluna Rose was or why Finder was being paid so handsomely to discover what happened to her.

Chimera Catalyst was the perfect blend of science fiction and mystery. I’d heartily recommend it to fans of either genre!

A PROUD BEAUTY
Society beauty Sylvia Stafford is far too pragmatic to pine. When the tragic death of her gamester father leaves her destitute and alone, she finds work as a governess in a merchant’s household in Cheapside. Isolated from the fashionable acquaintance of her youth, she resigns herself to lonely spinsterhood…until a mysterious visitor convinces her to temporarily return to her former life–and her former love.

Colonel Sebastian Conrad is no longer the dashing cavalry officer Sylvia fell in love with. Badly scarred during the Sepoy Rebellion, he has withdrawn to his estate in rural Hertfordshire where he lives in near complete seclusion. Brooding and tormented, he cares nothing for the earldom he has inherited–and even less for the faithless beauty who rejected him three years before.

AN UNEXPECTED REUNION
A week together in the isolated Victorian countryside is the last thing either of them ever wanted. But when fate intervenes to reunite them, will a beastly earl and an impoverished beauty finally find their happily ever after? Or are some fairy-tale endings simply not meant to be?

Imagine the heartbreak of falling in love, believing your love is returned, and then….nothing. That’s the tragic story that’s told in THE LOST LETTER. Though it’s not an uncommon trope, the telling of this particular tale is done in an emotional and poignant manner.

Three years ago, Colonel Sebastian Conrad was on leave and convinced by a friend to attend a musical event. Though Sebastian is the second son of an earl, his life has revolved around being a soldier, and not with social events. Yet, a beautiful young lady with an angelic voice captures his attention. Sylvia Stafford is a popular young lady, the daughter of a baronet, who is expected to make a good marriage. She surprisingly finds herself very attracted to the somewhat stern, quiet soldier who holds no appeal to the other young ladies. Over the next two weeks, Sebastian and Sylvia meet not-so-accidentally in the park, and spend time together at every event. It’s clear to both that they’re in love. Yet, on the night before he’s shipped off to India, Sebastian lacks the courage to propose, fearing he’ll be refused. They share some tender moments and kisses, and then Sebastian is gone. Neither of them receives any correspondence from the other, and each one believes they were played for a fool.

Time passes, and Sylvia suffers a reversal of fortune. Her father gambles everything away, and commits suicide, leaving Sylvia an outcast from society with no means of support. She seeks employment, and finds a family in trade willing to hire her. I’m happy that this family was very kind to her, and the daughters she teaches are lovely children. Eventually Sylvia settles into her new life, accepting that this will be her future, and convincing herself that her love for Sebastian has died. I admire Sylvia’s willingness to forge her own path, rather than become an unpaid servant for a distant relative.

Meanwhile, things have changed drastically for Sebastian as well. He was severely injured in India, and now has a badly scarred face, as well as being blind in one eye. Upon returning home, he learns that his father and older brother have died, leaving him as the new Earl of Radcliffe, something he never wanted. He retreats to his country estate, wanting only to be left alone, but his younger sister, Julia, won’t oblige. Initially, I found the flighty and overly dramatic Julia somewhat annoying, but I realized that her heart was in the right place, though her methods were questionable. She somehow finds the details of Sebastian’s failed love affair, tracks Sylvia down, and convinces her to come to Pershing Hall as her guest, to “save” Sebastian from doing something drastic.

Though Sylvia doesn’t want to tear her heart open again, she’s kind enough to want to help Sebastian if she possibly can. Sebastian, however, is furious at his sister’s machinations, and believes that the impoverished Sylvia is now coming around because he has a title and a fortune to go with it. This story is not that long, but it packs an emotional punch. I liked both characters very much – Sylvia became strong without becoming hard, and she still retained her dignity and sense of self-worth. Though many of the things Sebastian said were deliberately cruel, he was badly injured and feeling used. His true character became evident as the truth of what happened finally is revealed. It seems that there actually WERE at least a hundred letters written, and both Sylvia and Sebastian were the victims of someone else’s schemes. I love the moment when Sebastian finally has Sylvia’s first letter in his hand, and reads the words that expressed her deep love and longing. THE LOST LETTER is a lovely, touching, and beautifully written story, which I’m sure will be enjoyed by anyone who favors emotion, romance, and a second chance at love.

The only problem with them being together on the tour is that they are enemies who like one another a lot.

I absolutely loved this book. Everything in it is perfect; characters, plot, relationship between Kevan and Mason, everything. Although it is the first book in the series it focuses solely on the relationship between Kevan and Mason without trying to make introduction into a series. The characters are three-dimensional and it was so easy to fall in love with them. Kevan is a tough girl on the outside, but so fragile on the inside. She is a fighter and I rooted for her through the whole story. Mason is typical alpha, but while he goes for what he wants, he is also so gentle toward Kevan. The relationship between two of them is emotional from the very beginning. It is so obvious that they are head over heels in love with each other from the start. Only, it took them quite some time to realize that. The plot is also amazing; Kevan’s and Mason’s relationship is put in the context of the music world, business deals, promotions and life on the road.

If you are looking for a highly emotional and intense contemporary romance Beautiful Crazy is a perfect story. Read it; it is absolutely amazing!

Everything is perfect between them until Sherrie discovers that Curtis is keeping secrets from her – and his biggest secret of all will change everything. Can their newfound love survive, or will destiny keep them apart forever?

For me to stay up until 1am to finish the book knowing I have to get up at 6am for work tells you it must have been a good book. I hate when I do that though because then I’m very tired and miserable the next day. However, whenever I thought of the book it would make me smile and I knew then, it was worth it and I’d do it again.

I’m such a sucker for this type of story. I can’t reveal why because the synopsis only says “Sherrie discovers that Curtis is keeping secrets from her and his biggest secret of all will change everything.” This “biggest secret” is my favorite kind of plot. Kelli A. Wilkins’ writing style gave this classic love story a fresh look and appeal. I also enjoyed the setting in which the story was set. There were many little things that just gave this book the extra added touch. I enjoyed the implementation of the cats. I did notice the clever connection of the book title incorporated into the story.

Sherrie Parker, the heroine, wasn’t perfect. She cried a little too often but I loved how Curtis, the hero, would comfort her. I fell in love with them immediately when they first met because the entire situation had me laughing. At times Curtis’s secrets were annoying and I just wanted him to tell Sherrie but I understood why he couldn’t. I do need to point out that their relationship was definitely spicy. I started to sweat a little bit.

I got a little nervous in chapter eleven. There was a big bump for me. I almost couldn’t get past it. I still scowl when I think of it. Sherrie did something with someone that I thought was the most stupid thing to do,  the worst decision she could have made. I don’t think anyone in their right mind would have done what she did. Fortunately, I had strong feelings towards Curtis and curiosity in other matters so I was able to get past that plot quirk.

For the most part the story was aesthetically pleasing to me from start to end. Trust with Hearts was a heartwarming story that I thoroughly enjoyed. I would honestly recommend this book, especially to fans of cowboys and country music.

Can a book about a haunted house and a witch be funny?

If you told me I would enjoy a mystery that contained a witch, I’d think you had never met me. But…I did enjoy Murder Beach and its witch. The dialog was humorous which always entertains me. The setting of this book is in a little town with an old house on a beach that needs fixing up. Wow, I wanted to be there with my tools. Well…maybe I wanted to be there sitting on the beach. Nonetheless, the picture painted by the author wanted me to get involved.

Let’s talk a minute about the good and the not so good in this book. There was a little dialog about vampires that ran through this book. It is not my thing but it didn’t turn me off. That in itself means it had to be a fairly good read. This book moved a little slowly and it might be because some of the same actions went on a lot but it never made me want to put the book down. The principal characters were readable but not really fleshed out enough to “know” them. It was the dialog and the humor that I enjoyed most of all.

It’s a quick fun read, kind of sweet, not deeply involved, and I’m glad I spent the time reading it.

His Little Lanie is a small town contemporary romance retelling of the classic fairy tale, The Little Mermaid.

The premise of the story was alluring and it definitely had some uniqueness to it. The synopsis intrigued me and I was further pleased with the writing style. Apparently this is the second book in a series. I didn’t know that until I finished it therefore it’s safe to say that it can be read as a standalone. However, I am curious to read the first book in the series since I did grow fond of the cast of characters.

The hero in this story was Eriksen. My opinion of Eriksen was that he wasn’t quite developmentally appropriate for his age. He had this youngness about him. He was divorced, a pilot and a man but something was off. I had the same feelings regarding the heroine, Lanie. They just had this innocent sweetness about them. It didn’t take away from my enjoyment of the book since I was able to rationalize that their relationship was unique to their story, and that they shared a past history which only makes sense if you read the book, then you’d know what I’m talking about. I did laugh quite hard when Eriksen entered the water for the first time. That was a bit unrealistic but hilarious.

The author does tell the reader that this story is a contemporary romance retelling of the classic fairy tale, The Little Mermaid. I can see the connections threaded throughout the plot and rather enjoyed the cleverness. Especially the “tail” detail. That was smile provoking. A genuine feel good moment.

The synopsis said “Sometimes we just need a mental break and we’re looking for that comfort read book to take the day away.” That was the perfect description. I did enjoy the entire story from beginning to end. I consistently turned the pages looking forward to the happily ever after at the end in which I wasn’t disappointed.

I enjoyed reading His Little Lanie while I was home recovering from a minor surgery. It was the perfect read to distract me from my worries. Thank you Keri Ford for this unique and entertaining read. I do recommend other readers to pick up this book and enjoy this sweet fairy tale.

All of which will change one cranky old man and a local residents’ association to their very foundations.

An interesting book that wasn’t what I expected, but worth the read.

Initially, I wasn’t fond of this book. I’ll admit it. Ove got on my nerves. I am not the very factual, very direct kind of person that Ove is. I have grey areas. He doesn’t. Honestly, two-thirds of the way through the book, I still wasn’t converted. I didn’t see the point. I kept expecting something nasty to happen to ‘cat’, too. I should note that the book takes place in Sweden and there are references to Sweden. It adds to the story, absolutely, but should be pointed out.

But then about the two-thirds point, the book changed. Okay, maybe the book didn’t change, but my perception did. I got to see the man, Ove, become more than he was. I understood him better and quite honestly, I rooted for him. I liked his interactions with the neighbors and ‘cat’. There was a sweet man under that curmudgeon facade. I won’t give away the ending, but I did cry. I felt like I’d known Ove all along.

The secondary characters are great and while some are a tad irritating, they round out the story well. They needed to be there. Plus, they’re more than I thought and it was great to see them grow along with Ove.

If you want a book that might take some getting used to and some endurance to get through (you’ll be rewarded), then this might be the book for you. I’m glad I picked it up.

Emma Cane welcomes you to Fairfield Orchard, where new love blooms and romance is always in season.

For Amy Fairfield, the family orchard is more than a business. With its blossom-scented air and rows of trees framed by the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains, it’s her heritage and her future. But right now, it’s also a headache. Putting a painful breakup behind her, Amy has come home to help revitalize Fairfield Orchard. She doesn’t have time for the handsome—distracting—professor who wants to dig into her family’s history for his research.

Jonathan Gebhart knows he needs the Fairfields’ cooperation to make his new book a success. As for Amy—nothing in his years of academia could have prepared him for their sudden and intense attraction. He doesn’t want to complicate her life further, especially since she seems uneasy about his poking around in the past and he knows he’s not the sort of man built for forever. But some sparks can’t help but grow, and Jonathan and Amy may just learn that unexpected love can be the sweetest of all.

At Fairfield Orchard is the first installment of the series with the same name. It is a story of the Fairfield family and their 200 year-old orchard that is built on the land the family bought from Thomas Jefferson.

Amy Fairfield is a dutiful daughter and sister, a college dropout and a former real estate agent. She returned home after a bad break-up and she returned full of regret and guilt. Her former relationship was not a happy one and her boyfriend was a mean drunk who kept her away from her family. Jonathan Gebhart is Amy’s complete opposite. He is a history professor at the University of Virginia. He is also an only child and a nerdy guy with a great body. His field of research (it can be easily said obsession) is Thomas Jefferson. Due to the direct link between Fairfield Orchard and Thomas Jefferson, Jonathan approached the Fairfield family and asks their help. Although both Amy and Jonathan are reluctant to have a relationship, sparks fly and they cannot deny there is something between them.

This was a fast and enjoyable read for me, although it would be even better if the story could have focused more on the romance part and less on Amy trying to rebuild her life in her hometown. I like to read about developing relationships between a heroine and hero so for me I found that the romance part was a bit rushed in this story.

The author used some common situations that are already seen in romance novels in order to push Amy and Jonathan’s relationship to the next level. In a way, some of the interactions and development of Amy and Jonathan’s relationship was predictable. On the other hand I absolutely liked how the author developed other aspects of the story, for example, Amy’s relationship with her twin brother and former friends, the atmosphere in her hometown, and especially the secondary characters. All of the secondary characters, from Amy’s twin brother Tyler, to her neighbor Miss Jablonsky, are done in great detail. They are realistic and three dimensional. During the read I already started guessing as to who the next potential couple might be.

At Fairfield Orchard is worth reading. Although I wish there were more interactions between Amy and Jonathan because I liked their chemistry, I enjoyed this lovely and sweet story.

When I’m really hungry I enjoy eating a turkey burger and later, when I step on the scale, I’m sure glad I ate that turkey burger. However, in the back of my mind, I’m always dreaming of that Five Guys burger with all the fixings. Yum.

I enjoyed the story Better Together and I’m glad I read it but I’m reminded of that turkey burger with few fixings. I could see other more delicious fixings, but couldn’t reach them.

The hero, Aiden, was solid. He had a good head on his shoulders, knew what he wanted and didn’t back down. He was handsome and wealthy and smart. The heroine, Tallulah, was true to herself. She marched to the beat of her own drum. They agreed they weren’t each other’s type. Yet, just like the title says, they were better together. I wished though, that Aiden wasn’t so critical of Tallulah’s eclectic ways. She did state several times not to call her a certain nickname but he kept doing it. I think the nickname eventually grew on Tallulah but it distracted me from bonding to them as a couple.

The plot was good. It wasn’t unique but it was enjoyable and it flowed at a medium consistent pace. I consider the plot to be the fixings and I think there could have been more ‘fixings’ added. The synopsis says the “family’s personal and financial problems threaten to overwhelm Aiden.” That plot thread could have been thicker with more suspense or intensity, instead it felt flat. I don’t want to spoil anything but I was anticipating “more”. I understand Better Together wasn’t written for the suspense genre but there was a strong build up to one, and then it fizzled.

The writing style was quite good. It didn’t take long for me to get captured into the story and each page held my interest. I was intrigued to see how Aiden and Tallulah’s relationship developed. I wished the heroine lived in a bit more private or “uninterrupted” environment because certain things happened that took away a little bit of the chemistry for me.

Side characters existed but they weren’t very well developed. They had a thin layer to them. For a book that has two hundred and ninety eight pages they could have been a little bit more established and threaded throughout the book. There were plenty of opportunities to implement more emotion and drama and the author didn’t take advantage of that.

The book had a nice conclusion with all the threads tied up with a single knot instead of a double knot. Aiden and Tallulah did have their happy ever after ending. I’m not left with any unanswered questions. I was entertained for a few hours. I would recommend this book for others to read. It was a fun, quick and easy read.

A decades-old abandoned building doesn’t register on satellite images. Files detailing genetic experiments on children are even more disturbing, and most of the children are unaccounted for. Who were the test subjects and where are the bodies? Eleri and Donovan believe there are others out there who haven’t died yet. But they will, if something isn’t done. Fast. If the case itself wasn’t enough of a problem, someone is watching. Someone with a particular interest in Donovan’s own skeletal anomalies . . .

The Atlas Defect is the third book in the Nightshade Forensic Files series by A.J. Schudiere. The story centers on Eleri and Donovan, two F.B.I. agents from the Nightshade Division that is tasked with investigating some of the cases that fall outside of the regular realm of investigation. As such, these agents possess deep insight and strong investigative techniques.

The book is strong in description and research. The characters are believable and the events surrounding the ongoing investigations make the reader feel enveloped in the story. Although this is the third book in this specific series, a new reader should not feel that they would be lost just jumping in. While there may be some lingering questions; the author does a great job at filling in the missing back story that appeared in the other two books.

Action scenes and dialogue have a great flow throughout the book. This is mixed with strong medical and procedural research which gives an amazing combination and flow, making the reader feel at home even if the forensic field is somewhat new to the reader. Secondary characters each possess a strong backstory as well as their own character development. Transitions between events are not forced and move smoothly, leading the reader to want to continue reading and not put the book down.

The suspense factor is constant throughout the book. From the constant suspicion that someone is always watching to the mysterious events that plague the characters; there is the knowledge that something is not quite right. As the reader progresses through the book, more and more questions produce answers, which create even more questions in the end.

If you are a fan of forensic investigations I assure you that you will not be disappointed in The Atlas Defect!
