On a secluded Greek island in the 1950s, an enormous abandoned mine is filled with sea water for a major international experiment in marine biology. It is intended to study natural selection and, perhaps, evolution in a new aquatic ecosystem. However, the experiment and the island are eventually abandoned. Decades later, a sailor’s photograph of the corpse of a large shark prompts a team of biologists to visit the island. The team discovers unique environments, including an underwater brine lake. The life forms act in ways that affect the fauna on the island as well as themselves. The new ecosystem is dangerous. How to cope with it? The biologists will need some form of interspecies communication with the sea life and even with a cat that has been stranded on the island. It’s simple in theory…

The pacing of this book was steady and thought provoking. I originally assumed it would have a faster pacing, but I appreciated the time the author took to explain the history of the abandoned experiment and to set the scene for what the scientists and cat found when they arrived on the island. This was a slow-burning novel in the very best sense of the term. There were plenty of opportunities to savor what was happening in the plot, and I became pretty thankful about that by the time I’d reached the mid-point of the storyline.

I would have liked to see a little more time exploring what was happening in the strange portion of the island. The narrators built up to this moment so much that I was expecting them to understand it all a bit better than they did. With that being said, I was definitely interested in the things they learned and felt like the majority of my biggest questions about it were answered.

It was interesting to see how the role of the narrator was shared among the characters. Nannion, a stray cat, explained much of the storyline, but the parts of it she couldn’t understand or wasn’t around to observe were seamlessly picked up by the scientists and researchers who were attempting to discover what was really happening on the island. This was a great example of how multiple narrators can enhance the audience’s understanding of a tale.

Nannion is something I’d recommend to anyone who enjoys thoughtful science fiction.

The story of Biltmore spans World Wars, the Jazz Age, the Depression, and generations of the famous Vanderbilt family, and features a captivating cast of real-life characters including F. Scott Fitzgerald, Thomas Wolfe, Teddy Roosevelt, John Singer Sargent, James Whistler, Henry James, and Edith Wharton.

Orphaned at a young age, Edith Stuyvesant Dresser claimed lineage from one of New York’s best known families. She grew up in Newport and Paris, and her engagement and marriage to George Vanderbilt was one of the most watched events of Gilded Age society. But none of this prepared her to be mistress of Biltmore House.
Drogo Montague, director of the Center for cialis tadalafil 5mg Genitourinary Reconstruction in the Glickman Urological and Kidney Institute at Cleveland Clinic said there are medications available to treat ED. Before their marriage, the wealthy and bookish Vanderbilt had dedicated his life to creating a spectacular European-style estate on 125,000 acres of North Carolina wilderness. He summoned the famous landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted to tame the grounds, collaborated with celebrated architect Richard Morris Hunt to build a 175,000-square-foot chateau, filled it with priceless art and antiques, and erected a charming village beyond the gates. Newlywed Edith was now mistress of an estate nearly three times the size of Washington, DC and benefactress of the village and surrounding rural area. When fortunes shifted and changing times threatened her family, her home, and her community, it was up to Edith to save Biltmore—and secure the future of the region and her husband’s legacy.

A huge house, a wide landscape and a fairy tale in a real place.

I knew when I picked up this book that I’d be transported and I was. I’ve never seen the Biltmore estate, but through this book, I did.

This book tells the story of the Biltmore through the years, the way it’s changed and just how expensive it can be to keep up the house.

One thing about this book, the author not only discusses the house, but the branch of the Vanderbilt family that created it. I got to learn about the people and the home. I liked learning about the peripheral people as well–who were the movers and shakers at the house, who helped make the house fabulous. I can’t imagine my day to day life having so many fascinating people who are historical figures just being part of it. There are a ton of details and this isn’t an easy read, but it is fascinating.

If you want a book about a place you can just about only dream of, then this might be the book for you.

Transformed into a beautiful young woman, Medusa is given only one warning: not to use her powers of transforming those to stone. She agrees and adopts the name Meddy Gorgonne. In a stroke of chance, she finds lodgings with the Goldstein’s, Sam and Trudy, and tries to figure out how modern Portland works. Cars, showers, television—all are mysteries to her at first, although she adapts.Meddy is somewhat naïve about life and especially about love, as she slowly falls for Sam, a teen who is suffering from Usher’s Syndrome, a disease that will blind and deafen him in time. What is more troubling to Meddy is that her powers of turning people to stone have returned, and she is at a loss as to why. With the police slowly closing in and time running out on how to get Eris to return to Olympus, Meddy discovers that sometimes old is new, and that time-worn traditions can surmount modernity. But will they be enough for her to stay with Sam, or will she be forced to return to Tartarus for eternity?

It’s never too late to try to fix old mistakes.

Some of my favorite parts of this book involved Meddy’s reaction to modern life. So much had changed in the world over the last few thousand years since her glory days. She was surprised by everything from the food to the fashion of the modern day, and I was fascinated by her adjustment to our era. There were certain things she noticed that I never would have assumed would be an issue, and other changes I assumed she would struggle with turned out to be no big deal at all. This was all thought out very nicely, and I appreciated how much effort Mr. Frankel put into it.

The pacing was perfect. I’d originally assumed it would be a little slow in the beginning as Meddy explained what she’d done to anger the gods, but the plot quickly jumped into showing what happened when she was given a temporary pardon from her sentence instead. While these details were given all of the attention they needed later on, I loved the fact that the audience got to move on to main storyline so quickly in this tale. That really kept my interest levels high beginning with the first page and going on through to the final one.

Meddy’s character development was handled wonderfully. She was always someone I sympathized with, but I only grew to like her even more as I got to know the parts of her personality that weren’t immediately noticeable. Yes, she had her fair share of flaws, but she also had a genuinely kind heart and a willingness to learn from her past. Those are always lovely things to discover about a character, especially when they’re followed by genuine personal growth.

What the Gods Allow was a stellar addition to J.S. Frankel’s long list of works. Whether you’re a new or longterm fan of his stories, I highly recommend checking this one out!

This book in the series is both like and unlike the others I’ve read. In the other books, the problems faced are of a more immediate kind and there is a distinct resolution. In this book, the problem to be solved is the complete annihilation of the human race a few centuries from now. That does not, however, suggest that the plot and action are less compelling. In fact, I found that I was more engrossed in this book that in the others – so much so I stayed up way too late to be able to finish it, just because I had to know what happened.

As with her other books, there are a lot of characters to keep track of, but the author does a wonderful job making sure the reader can keep them separated (with the exception of the twins, but that’s a special case – and I loved the humor there).

In the other books in this series I’ve read, there’s been a lot of extra information that took me out of the story flow – interesting, but distracting. There was none of that here and it was truly appreciated.

I also enjoyed the fact that the author included glimpses of the future in this book- and there was more in this book that tied it together with the others. I’m not sure it could be read as a stand alone as well as the others, though. I’m looking forward to reading more in this series. Great job!

In his most widely appealing book yet, one of today’s leading authors of popular anthropology looks at the intriguing history and peculiar nature of money, tracing our relationship with it from the time when primitive men exchanged cowrie shells to the imminent arrival of the all-purpose electronic cash card.

As someone with a degree in history, I find myself drawn to the subject on a regular basis, constantly on the lookout for informative and engaging books. There are many sub-genres of history, of course, and economic history is but one.

Calcium Channel viagra online from india Blockers – these dilate the arteries thereby reducing the body’s immune function. The History of Money manages to educate readers in an entertaining fashion about humans’ use of money to engage in consumption.

The book starts at the beginning with “chocolate cash.” Sounds good, right? Readers get a bit of Aztec history by reading the chapter entitled “Cannibals, Chocolate, and Cash.” Other food items for trade are discussed. Eventually, the first coins are produced, and I learned about this too. It’s interesting to discover how turning to coins affects the spread of commerce.

As expected, gold had its part to play, and this is covered (other metals as well). Readers get treated to a little Ancient Greek history and different monetary revolutions. Going to paper money is one of the revolutions. Where was the dollar born? I found out. How did the use of money affect interaction between human beings? Perhaps in ways one might not expect.

The next section is about the Romans and their economy. For example, I learned that “Rome built the world’s first empire organized around money” (49). Moving along, I got some Medieval and Renaissance history. The common thread of money ties the eras together like a fine tapestry, and I was treated to fascinating human happenings along the way. Bits and pieces of other histories are found throughout, such as math, decimals, and even language and the arts.

This is a world history, a trip throughout different countries as well as eras. Every section of this book is engaging, but there are certain highlights one might appreciate, such as the look into American money, its history, and how it’s made. There are many surprising facts to be found such as coin and paper money being less than ten percent of the dollars in existence, and the other dollars are “numbers in a ledger or tiny electronic blips on a computer chip” (124).

There’s discussion of the scientific revolution, the British economy, American Civil War era money, and even how The Wonderful Wizard of Oz had something to say about gold and silver usage. Moving along, I read about credit cards and eventually electronic money. At last, the author leaves the reader with much to think about. This book is about more than money and is well worth the read.

What starts as a no-strings arrangement to keep her safe soon becomes an all-consuming passion neither of them is prepared for. Fire burns out of control between them, threatening the very fabric of the friendship they hold so dear. Once the ashes have cooled, will there be anything left to salvage?

The synopsis says “Fire burns out of control between them” “Once the ashes have cooled, will there be anything left to salvage?” I’m not sure when the fire ever went out for the ashes to cool. The sexual teasing between the hero and heroine caused such sexual tension I’m surprised my book didn’t melt in my hands.

I’ve read some hot books in the past and I normally never point out heat levels in my reviews but this story was consistently, effectively, hot. There was heavy sexual tension consistently from beginning to end and it was strong enough that I felt it worth mentioning. If readers enjoy material verging on explicit then this story delivers.

The synopsis is the plot. There aren’t any surprise plot twists or other complex scenarios with depth threaded throughout the story but I thought the plot concept sounded interesting enough, and is why I read it. I just thought there’d be more of it. If not for the traumatic event that the heroine, Lucy, endured, then this book would have had nothing to hold it together. Speaking of this traumatic event, I think there should have been a warning to the reader at the beginning of the book regarding the sensitive matter. I credit the author with writing about this traumatic event with respect, compassion and empathy. I don’t have an issue with the topic matter, but I would have appreciated a heads up.

Samuel was a wonderful hero and easy to feel romantic about. His commitment to family and his caring personality to others were a huge draw for me. I’m thankful Lucy had Samuel to help her with her issue. They were destined to be together since childhood. I liked Lucy and found her easy to relate to and together as a couple, I was pleased to see their love for each other blossom. Even better, I do believe they loved each other emotionally, not just physically. I thought it was cute that several of the secondary characters figured out Samuel and Lucy loved each other much sooner than they did themselves.

If you need some inspiration and are looking for something to read to put you in the mood, then this book has the heat to help you get your motors running. I definitely was concerned about overheating myself. I’d recommend this book to those who are comfortable with a romance with a hot rating and all that goes along with it. Just have ice handy.

Their ancient legends and dreams open a way to solutions to both murders.

What a good read. Not a long, heavy novel, but rather a short book that I could not put down. I liked the setting…an Inn with a haunted room (or so the proprietress thinks) and a manager from a big hotel who is there to visit and advise a little. The whole thing sort of mixed cozy and business together, and I liked it. Both the owner and Rebecca have some business they need help with. Thus, starts a story of twists and turns, a little humor, and a little murder, at the Greenwood Inn.

Rohatyn’s characters were well-defined. Some quirky, some practical and business-like, some hard workers; just a whole mix and match of interesting people. The characters were crafted so well, you could picture them. This book does have a few chapters of swinging back and forth between the 1700’s and the present. While this can sometimes be confusing that was not true at all here. The two stories while clear, were not totally connected but rather one sort of set the stage for the other.

I think you can recognize my appreciation for this story already but to summarize… it was a fun and very quick read. One well worth my time.

Kenzie Sykes is doing her best to raise her little brother and keep him out of jail―all while dealing with her own broken heart that just hasn’t healed. She doesn’t have time for romance. He’s not asking… Until he is, and she finds herself saying yes.

Fizzy, bubbly, sensational and sexy are just some of the words I can use to describe how I felt about some of the characters while reading this novel. I laughed, giggled, snickered and face-palmed; I grinned, gasped and fanned myself from the heat. All this from one book that was so good, I stayed up to almost 2 a.m. to finish it. Why is it so awesome? Because Ms. Harte made me feel like I was right there, walking alongside Evan and Kenzie, Daniel and Smith, Lila and Rachel and the whole cast that made up the families of both the hero and heroine. I felt part of the inner circle because of the third person POV from both Evan and Kenzie’s side of things. And yet, there was so much to discover about everyone that could only be done by watching what happened, listening in on other’s conversations and seeing the emotion and craziness falling in love brought into all their lives. Never mind the resulting entertainment as they stumbled, goofed, gaffed and made goo-goo eyes at each other on and off during their budding relationship. There were such strong feelings of warmth, welcoming and family, warts and all, that appealed to me on so many levels, I couldn’t help but adore this book. Handle with Care is an excellent feel-good, happy-inducing read that left me feeling 100% satisfied. This is romance done right.

The dialogue alone is a giggle-kicker. What comes out of the mouths of Lila and Rachel are blushingly hysterical and they make no apologies for their colorful views on sex. The resulting word war between Evan and Daniel, Kenzie’s brother, was unconventional to say the least, but I have to admit laughing out loud at some of the more creative ideas for swearwords. It’s how and when they were used that made it seem real, relatable and effective comic relief. Overall, the strength of this novel is its dialogue between the characters, both first and secondary.

Emotion. Oh, there is a lot of that going around. Here’s where I find the author did a solid. Everyone always follows a heroine when there’s some kind of breakup or misunderstanding in the process of falling in love. So many books use that trope to fill scenes up with angst. Not many look at it from the guy’s perspective. What does he do when he’s hurt? I know that Chunky Monkey seems to be popular for hurting heroines but what do guys do? Ms. Harte shares her vision of Evan in a funk and I’m not sorry to say, I found it hilarious. Genius and hilarious. In my mind’s eye, I could picture it so clearly. I liked the hero even more because of it.

I understand that this is book 3 in the series, and based on how I feel after finishing Handle with Care, I know I missed out in not reading the first two. But, I did not feel left out. That’s a huge difference. This can be read as a standalone because the focus is exactly where it should be, on Evan and Kenzie’s rocky, quirky, unconventional, romantic, sexy and wonderful romance.

Of all the subplots with a secondary character, Ms. Harte picked the right person to highlight, Smith. Evan and Smith’s relationship is important on a few levels. It’s sometime comical, but there is a depth of emotion, a well of untapped seriousness that gave the novel solid footing. These are people who’ve been dealt some seriously bad hands in life and yet manage to rise above it. Or are trying to. Through the hero, I came to understand that there is a lot more to Smith than what the story initially presented. The last chapter in the novel, where the HEA is revealed in all its fun and romantic glory also included a well worded, intriguing sentence that insured the obvious. I HAVE to read the next story. Consider me obsessed with the thought of Smith’s HEA – now that I have been given a hint of his teddy bear side, I want him to have something he never had. Evan discovered it, now I want Smith to have it. The big question is, how long do I have to wait to find out? That’s the mark of a well written book – the yearning for more of the good stuff. Handle with Care is definitely good stuff and if that’s the quality Ms. Harte is known to write, which I believe she is, then wanting more is a no-brainer. I’m in.

This is an intriguing story and one I’m glad I read. I want to know where the next book might take me. Give this story a try.
