Tori Moss is no stranger to heartbreak. Raised by a foster mother since the deaths of her parents in a horrific accident, she’s poured herself into ballet. A disappointing audition sends her into an emotional tailspin, but it’s the strangely intriguing new guy in school who catches her as she falls. Although Tori and Raven seem to be nothing alike, they share an uncommon ability to see the sudden flood of demons pouring into Los Angeles. When she discovers a plot to bring about the Apocalypse, Tori must decide whom to trust. One wrong step will cost her everything.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to discover that everything you thought you knew about yourself was actually a lie? And what if the truth revealed that you were at the center of a plot to bring about the Apocalypse? This is exactly what Tori Moss has to face and it makes the disappointment of a dance audition seem insignificant by comparison. The audition had been devastating, as a famous ballet director tells her, “You’re a moose. In the corps, your height would draw too much focus. As a soloist, we have no one tall enough to partner you. . . you’re far too big to be a ballerina. Classical ballet is not in your future.” All her dreams are shattered, but then, as the truth of her life unfolds, she discovers things that are much worse, not only for her, but for the entire planet.

Dancing with Raven is an action-packed, thrilling story with great characters. I liked Tori a lot and really felt for her pain and her angst as her world is up-ended. She has no idea who to trust, and those who she thought she could trust turn on her as those she distrusted turn out to be allies. Tori’s character is well-developed and I found her to be very believable. The plot has one twist after another. Tori meets a young man, Raven, and discovers that they may not have a lot in common, but they both possess the ability to see demons. As they learn to trust each other, the date for the Apocalypse grows ever closer.

This is the first novel in a series called The Young Shakespeareans and it is a thrilling first book. The ending makes it clear that other books will follow, and I can’t wait for the next in the series. But the novel does end at a reasonable stopping point, with many of the mysteries resolved, and the door opening onto the next adventure.

Readers of fantasy and paranormal novels are sure to get caught up in the lives of Tori Moss and Raven Cassidy. I look forward to reading more in this wonderful series.

Alexandra Monroe is a slave smuggler, smuggling slaves north to Tennessee where they can live as free people. Her crime is sedition and her punishment, if caught, is death. The daughter of one of the wealthiest men in Montgomery, Alexandra lives a life not by her own accord, but a life she willingly accepts for her secret quest to save the lives of slaves. Her ultimate sacrifice is to marry the town’s most eligible bachelor, Thomas Ludlow.

One afternoon, Alexandra comes face to face with handsome William Graysden. He captivates her, and her thoughts confuse her. Born a Creek Indian, not only is William forbidden because of his race, but also because Alexandra is a closely betrothed young woman. William and Alexandra fascinate one another, finding in each other a bond they don’t wish to ignore. After a series of events; however, William is forced to face the choice to continue the dangerous pursuit of Alexandra’s affections or forget about her.

The Woman on the Painted Horse is set in one of the saddest times of United States history, the Civil War. It is a suspenseful, rather cruelly dramatic story that tests the mettle of true love to its limits.

Alexandria Monroe’s world is one of privilege in outward appearance. In reality, it is fraught with malicious gossip, horrifying secrets, and clandestine business dealings that are little more than human trafficking for money, position, and power. Alexandria’s parents are willing to force her into a loveless marriage in order to maintain their lifestyle.

She is to wed Thomas Ludlow who is from a wealthy family. His actions toward Alexandria are shocking even for the times. His cruel use of his power and position make him an antagonist that is really easy to hate.

William Graysden, a Muscogee Indian, is totally unsuitable for Alexandria to even look at much less find irresistible. Yet, the two of them take one look at each other and make a connection that seems unbreakable. Only in secretive darkness are they able to explore their heartfelt desire for each other. Both ethnic groups oppose their relationship which brings on appallingly cruel treatment.

Alexandria leads a double life that could get her hanged for treason. She helps slaves escape to freedom. There are adrenaline-pumping times in the story that has one reading as fast as she is running with the dogs hot on her heels.

Since the story is told from Alexandria’s point of view, the reader gets to see her compassion for the blacks and comes to understand why she feels the way she does. I was horrified by how her unloving mother punished Alexandria by beating Sarah, the black woman who loved and cared for Alexandria. Of course, it did keep Alexandria obedient because she loved Sarah who had always been more of a mother to her than her biological mother.

Ms. Archer gives the reader a hard look at conditions in Montgomery, Alabama during this historical time. The love story threads through the novel, but much of the story is about prejudice and social conditions of the time. To me it would have been more enjoyable if the love story had been developed more. Also, I felt I had missed a chapter between the climax and the time Alexandria, William, and the disenfranchised people they took with them came to settle in Tennessee.

The Woman on the Painted Horse is written in a way that makes it easy to read. It is an attention-keeping, memorable story of racial strife that shows humanity at least than its best.

The Dowager Countess of Morley asks Vincent Tremayne, Lord Vampire of Cornwall, to become guardian of her American granddaughter. Vincent honors the agreement and plans to get his new ward married and off his hands as soon as possible.

When Lydia Price arrives, she soon turns Vincent’s gloomy castle upside-down, and he decides he wants Lydia for himself. But if Vincent can’t protect Lydia from her entanglement with scandalous portrait painter Sir Thomas Lawrence, the vampire community will make sure that he—and Lydia—face dire consequences.

The author outdid herself when she wrote that first chapter. Talk about setting up a heart wrenching reason to like the heroine, Lydia, and have a reader invested in her happiness so early on in a book! It’s like I could feel her rejection and sadness and then, her determination to survive, succeed and thrive. It takes a strong female character to weather the emotional onslaught of rejection and Ms. Ann certainly accomplished it. Lydia was a terrific heroine.

Vincent, the hero is in a pickle. He is honor bound to repay an old pact or oath that was made many years before. It was a clever way to get Lydia and Vincent together in a very proper manner. What happens next is anything but proper. It’s delightful, intriguing and full of surprises.

The author did have some of the characters that I met in Bite Me, Your Grace populate this current novel but they were only there to help prod the hero and sometimes poke fun at him, and in that, they were very helpful and endearing, especially Angelica. Rest assured however, that this is a wonderful standalone story. The few details that would be helpful to know from the previous book are revealed in the natural course of telling this tale while introducing Lydia to its world’s intricacies, when Vincent has no choice but to tell her. The drama and suspense that leads up to that moment was great writing. On the other hand, I don’t know if anyone would truly be that unaware of their surroundings and I can’t figure out why someone out of nowhere would do such a thing. It almost seemed orchestrated to me but that’s not where the author took it. I guess the level of intrigue that she did provide was enough. Of course, what came afterwards is definitely worth reading.

Dialogue is important in this tale more so because it’s done so well that there was no need for the author to resort to ‘telling’. She showed me with every description, cheeky comment and suspenseful twist of the plot while using the interactions between characters to lead a reader where she wanted them to go. I enjoyed it.

Even more enjoyable was when Vincent and Lydia came together in carnal passion. Here, description and dialogue produced excellent results and I was a bit hot under the collar after reading those scenes. Talk about sexy!

There is an undercurrent which is produced by two sisters. They were loose cannons and I could not guess which way things were going to go. I liked how the author dealt with them. It was sweet but not too sweet. They are after all, vampires.

The happily ever after encompasses not just Lydia and Vincent and for that I commend the author. It’s like she cares for each and every one of her characters. If they are bad, then they get their comeuppance, and if they are redeemable, they have a chance at redemption, and if there is a transition to be made, Ms. Ann tries to put a brave face on it and make it as painless as possible. And when someone deserves happiness, like Lydia and Vincent, then they get one, but one as unique and fascinating as they are.

Of course, this wouldn’t be a book in a series without dangling a carrot for the next story to come. There were hints dropped all through One Bite Per Night but I wasn’t sure who he was going to be paired with until the epilogue clinched it. I can’t wait to see how in the world that is going to work out. I already see some major bumps and that makes for the best reading. How fun.

One Bite Per Night is a ton of fun. I dare say this novel is even better than the last one. I really enjoyed Bite Me, Your Grace, but Vincent and Lydia’s story was a bit more fun and a lot more sexy. Plus, the reason for the heroine to be with the hero in the first place was unique and endearing. The fact that Vincent simply could not resist Lydia no matter how hard he tried entertained me no end. I love to see a powerful vampire tied up in knots. I think paranormal romance readers will enjoy this book. And if a reader enjoyed the previous novel in the series, then One Bite Per Night is a sure winner. This gets a solid recommend from me.

Transformed by a primitive magic beyond a civilized man’s understanding, I was given a horrible gift that no man should possess… It held me, twisted me, turning me at its bidding. I was enslaved by its power, compelled to devour the souls of the dead until I became the monster of my fears. I have seen things I wish never to see again. I have done things of which I wish never to speak. Yet I must if I am to find the answers to fulfill my hope. I have walked upon blue ribbons of molten stone to peer into the depth of a man’s soul. I watched as a promise made at birth brought my friend Enon to sacrifice everything to become whole again – all in an effort to save the life of his child. I have cried without shame for the loss of all I hold dear and for fear that the future will hold more than I can bear. I am Tucker Littlefield. Know all that I say now is true-spoken.

Everything I’ve read from this author so far has had a premise that leapt out at me right away, and this story was no exception to that rule. Mr. Maus has a strong sense of what should and should not be mentioned ahead of time. He knows just when to dangle a juicy glimpse of what’s to come in front of his audience. What makes The Gift – The Chronicles of Tucker Littlefield even more compelling, though, is everything he holds back.

It would have been helpful to have more character development. While this tale is definitely plot-centered, so much time was spent describing all of the exciting things that happen to Tucker on his quest that I never felt like I got to know him as well as I should have in a full-length novel. I got the impression that Tucker tends to be a quiet and thoughtful guy, but that was the extent of what I figured out about his demeanor. The secondary characters lead interesting lives, but I learned even less about their personalities or how they changed as a result of everything that happens.

The world-building in this book was strong. It took me a chapter or two to figure out the identities of the most important characters, but once I had that sorted out I was impressed by how much time the author spent developing Enon’s culture and backstory. This is the kind of work that asks its audience to pay close attention to the details early on, but it’s well worth the investment once the plot picks up speed.

The Gift – The Chronicles of Tucker Littlefield is a good choice for anyone who likes high fantasy.

Determined to overcome the lingering self doubts her cheating ex left behind, Sara James scrapes up the courage to join Club 3 where her instant, powerful attraction to Trace Bowen, the head Dom, sends her running in the wrong direction.

From the moment he rescues Sara from the clutches of a coked-up Dom, Trace is enthralled. She s beautiful, brave, and poised on the edge of blossoming into the sub of his dreams. In the initial rush of enchantment, though, he omits a minor detail that causes a major problem.

Back in college, Trace was Kai Kalo-Haimani s first love until Kai s straight-laced family demanded he walk the line. Now Kai is back, heart in his hands, to ask for another chance. Even if it means accepting Sara as part of the package.

Despite her attraction to both men, Sara s old demons come roaring back, threatening to push her back inside her shell of insecurity. Unless Trace and Kai can convince her that not only is she enough for one man, she s more than enough for two.

Sara James finds Trace Bowen extremely attractive, but he’s definitely out of the safe range that she likes to live in. Kai, the sweet man who lives next door, is a much safer option, especially since he’s in Portland to find his lost lover.

Trace manages to sneak under Sara’s shields after he saves her from a dangerous situation in his BDSM club, and being so steady with her throughout it all. Trace works his way into her heart and life, and she’s a bit thrown because she’s also attracted to Kai. This is really evident when Kai’s lost lover is Trace himself.

Because of her past, Sara is not sure she’s good enough for one man, let alone two. This story has a satisfying ménage when the three finally get together. My one complaint with this story is that we spend so much time with Trace and Sara as a couple with Sara having a side attraction to Kai. We get to see from both Kai and Trace’s point of view their college love affair, but Kai being introduced as a third seemed a bit rushed. It does work, because Trace and Kai are already in love, and Sara and Kai are half in love, but I would have loved more time with them as a trio.

I can only hope the author revisits these characters. This is the third book in the Club series, and I had no problem following along and where the characters fit in. I really love when an author does such a great job setting up a series book as a stand-alone. I very much recommend this for fans of ménage where the men are just as in love with each other as the lady involved.

Heart of Fame, Book 7

After yet another month without a lead singer, the band Synergy is on the verge of calling it quits. Which drives Jaxon Campbell, keyboardist and perpetual player, to do something dangerous—hit up a woman with contacts—and curves—in all the right places. Trouble is, the last time he saw her, he kind of broke her heart. And stole her cherished, autographed AC/DC album.

Natalie Thorton, Dean of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, knows everyone who’s anyone in Australia’s music industry. She’s driven and utterly professional and doesn’t have room in her schedule for relationships.

When Jaxon strides into her office, all of Natalie’s suppressed sexual urges—the ones born in Jax’s arms—surge to the surface. He wants something from her? Well, she wants something from him. Orgasms. Lots of them.

How can Jax say no? He’s never forgotten her, and it’s not like they’re going to fall in love. But just who’s playing who? And whose heart is going to fall first?

Getting Played is the latest episode of Lexxie Couper’s Heart of Fame series, and the hottest one yet. I like this world Ms. Couper has built, and the people that inhabit this world.

Time is running out in the search for a replacement for Nick Blackthorne. Synergy has just a few weeks left to find someone at least as talented as Nick, or lose the chance at the movie theme song they are supposed to record. Keyboard player Jax Campbell steps up and takes one for the band by offering to contact the one woman from his past that he has never completely forgotten…Natalie Thorton, Dean of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. The history between these two is hot in the extreme, and they parted on less than amicable terms, so Jax isn’t sure how this will play out. But he has to try, because if anyone can find a singer for them, it will be Nat. Natalie has never forgotten Jax, and despite the past, she agrees to help him, by issuing a challenge…for every suitable candidate she proposes, Jax will provide her with an orgasm. Nat convinces herself that it is only sex, and sex with Jax was the best and most exciting she ever had. As for Jax, Nat is the one he never quite forgot, and he remembers all the passion of their past. But these two forgot to tell their hearts to stay uninvolved, and that is when it gets hot. Can Nat find that elusive someone that would be the perfect singer for Synergy, without falling in love with Jax? Will Jax discover his true feelings for Nat before he loses her yet again? Can these two learn that while the sex is fantastic, adding love to the mix makes it even better?

It has been an enlightening and entertaining journey in a search for Nick Blackthorne’s replacement, a task that quickly becomes nearly impossible. With this book, I enjoyed the rock star antics of Jax Campbell, as he comes to realize that there is more to life than just playing around, and Natalie learns that being serious all the time isn’t for her at all.

Jaxon ‘Jax’ Campbell is the epitome of the rock star bad boy. Handsome and sexy, he has literally slept his way around the world. He thinks love is overrated and not in his plans, but then he sees Natalie again, and suddenly he is thinking of things he never knew he wanted. When Nat challenges him, he accepts her terms, but plans to get his own way too. I liked watching as Jax finally grew up and discovered what was important in his life, and how far he would go to get it. He has to face the real possibility that he has lost the one good thing in his life, Natalie’s love, in order to finally open his heart to all love offers.

Natalie ‘Boxhead’ Thorton is smart, funny and very determined not to lose her head, or her heart, to Jax Campbell again. She comes up with her challenge as a way to show Jax he has no hold over her heart, and she thinks she can forget the past and just use him for some outstanding sex, then walk away. I liked Natalie, with her serious persona and her naughty inner vixen. I like that she was adventurous and able to match Jax at every turn.

Watching these two is like watching a classic romantic comedy; every time you think you know what is coming, one of these two people throws a curve and off they go on another adventure in sensuality. I especially liked the scene in Natalie’s office, featuring the Federal Minister for the Arts and Culture, Natalie, and a naked Jax under the desk. Very hot and totally hilarious at the same time. There are many such scenes, and many unique places for Nat and Jax to visit and enjoy. The big question…do they find the replacement that this whole adventure was set up to find? No spoilers from this reader, this is one that has to be experienced to be appreciated. This is best read with the AC on high cool, and plenty of iced drinks to be had. Oh, and check out Jax’s tattoo, too.

Perhaps there’s something more to Whiterock than dusty streets, shabby buildings, and discouraged residents, because everything changes when Gus and Sally find each other. But how could that possibly make the decrepit bandshell look new, put the antlers back on the poor, abused bronze elk?

They say opposites attract, but will the the initial burst of lust and intrigue be enough to keep Gus and Sally interested in each other in the longterm?

The chemistry between Gus and Sally is intense. They have such contradictory personalities that at first I was slightly skeptical about the possibility of them becoming anything other than friends, but Ms. Glad allows both characters ample time to get to know one another. It was even more interesting to see how the science fiction elements of the plot were woven into the scenes that showcase Sally and Gus’ many differences.

I had a hard time determining exactly when this story was supposed to be set. Whiterock is a charming community that seems to exist in a world whose technology, fashions, and social norms are 20 or 30 years behind what’s happening in the urban environment where Gus lives. It was never quite clear to me if this was a hint about the strange things that sometimes happen in Whiterock or if this tale was set a few decades further into the past than I originally assumed.

Ms. Glad has a smooth writing style that kept me glued to the page way past my bedtime. She has a unique way of sketching out a setting or character by focusing on details that I wouldn’t normally think of when describing them to other people: the sometimes lumpy texture of homemade mashed potatoes or the funny ways people move when their shoes and clothing are soaking wet. This was my first introduction to her work. If it’s any indication of her talent, I can’t wait to hunt down the rest of her books!

Improbable Solution is a seamless blend of science fiction and romance that I’d recommend equally to fans of either genre.

Even if it means risking everything, including each other.

I really did love this one! Aline Hunter takes things to the next level with Alpha Mine, the fourth book in her outstanding Alpha and Omega Series. I am completely hooked on this series, even more so now with some of the intriguing directions the author took in this book.

This is not a stand alone book, but rather, it is a continuation of several long time arcs while beginning some new ones as well. All the while Hunter continues spinning an intricate web of sub-plots involving important characters in the series. The future storylines will feature an outstanding cast of characters, epic love affairs, and very nasty villains. The Shepherds are still in the picture, along with a new contender as more powerful enemies are brought to light.

This book further explores Trey and Sadie’s relationship. Trey, our alpha bad ass shifter, has to realize that Sadie, who is pretty darn bad ass herself, can take care of business. Ava and Diskant are still in the thick of things. Some big things happen in the situation with Nathan and Leigh, while the story takes an even more stunning turn with Aldon Frost. Let me just say that this book will reveal secrets that are integral to the series arc. So this one is definitely not to be missed!

As for the writing style, it was excellent. It flowed easily, with a fast pace and sub-plots that were seamless. Now for the juicy bits. As expected, Trey and Sadie find time to indulge in lots of scorching hot sex. It is graphically detailed with Trey remaining as possessive and bad ass as ever, dirty talker and all that.

So I guess it is obvious how much I truly enjoyed this book. I liked the various sub-plots and how all my favorite characters are still involved in everything. I really can’t wait to see what’s next.

One errant thought can create a mountain where there used to be a meadow in this universe, and the consequences of making these kinds of changes can be quite serious. Smooth writing and intricate world-building made this tale stick out immediately to me. I was especially intrigued by how quickly the glaring problems of living in a society where a small percentage of people have these abilities was sketched out before the plot picked up speed.

There were several instances in which I encountered stories that contained a few too many characters for their length. “An Incursion of Mice” is a good example of this tendency. Wall T is a pompous cat who attempts to rally the rest of his pride to figure out who has been eating their food. He’s the most cat-like narrator I’ve never met, but I had trouble keeping track of all of the other felines who he’s graciously decided to allow his human servants to keep.

I don’t normally recommend reading anthologies out of order, but “Containing Patient Zero” has such a creative and engaging premise that I highly recommend skipping ahead and checking it out first. When Dr. Joseph Nelson is summoned to figure out what happened with an execution that has gone terrible wrong, the evidence he uncovers points to a chilling conclusion. It’s difficult to discuss the details of this story without giving away spoilers, but it kept me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. I never wanted it to end and hope there is a sequel in the works for it!

Just about every entry in this collection works incredibly well as a stand-alone tale. I wasn’t familiar with any of the detectives who have also been featured in other books, but I was quickly able to leap into their worlds. This isn’t always an easy feat to pull off, so I was impressed to see it happen over and over again.

Fiction River: Fantastic Detectives is a great choice for anyone who loves it when genres are swirled together. It’s nominally more heavily influenced by mystery conventions and tropes, but the science fiction and fantasy elements in it are almost as strong.

There are dozens of people who would have been happy to do the deed, including members of Jubal’s own family. As Sheriff Scott Tucker and his deputy Trenton Calder look into the circumstances surrounding Jubal’s demise, it begins to look like the prime suspect may be someone very dear to the widow Beckie MacKenzie, the beloved music teacher and mentor of Alafair’s daughter Ruth. Ruth fears that the secrets exposed by the investigation are going to cause more damage to her friend’s life than the tornado. Alafair has her own suspicions about how Jubal Beldon came to die, and the reason may hit very close to home.

Murder and mayhem burn through the town of Boynton, Oklahoma faster than a twister gone wild.

In the summer of 1916 a large twister carves a path of destruction into the rural town of Boynton, Oklahoma. A cast of characters, each threatened by the odious Jubal Beldon in his or her own way, finds themselves in the middle of a murder investigation. A book in the Alafair Tucker mystery series, the tale winds around on itself and lays out one or two particular surprises at the end.

For someone who has not read any of the series beforehand, it didn’t take me long to figure out what was happening. The unique way the author used to show many points of view was very effective in a murder mystery and really showed what times were like back in 1916. The language, the mannerisms of the local people…everything, even including some pretty sharp prejudices.

At the onset of the book, it did take me awhile to figure out where the story was leading. You got to meet a host of people and learned quickly what an unpleasant person Jubal Beldon was. He lied, created rumors where there was nothing to see and made a host of people’s lives miserable. When a twister hit the town and he was found dead, there were many who were glad to see him not residing on the planet any longer. But who might have hated or feared him enough to actually have killed him?

An investigation is formed and one by one suspects have their secrets laid bare. The twist at the end is a good one, but the conclusion was fairly uneventful. The one issue I had with the book was the issue of homosexuality and the abject hatred people had for anyone perceived as gay in those times. I felt the author was making a point about motivational factors as regards to murder, but at times it frankly made me uncomfortable. The misery of the accused characters and repercussions of being found out were horrendous. The family issues of being disowned were also very emotionally infused. I would indeed be curious as to the author’s views on the subject and why she chose to show that particular part of history in her work.

For the most part, I enjoyed the story. It was like coming home to visit a group of relatives I had never met in a small town I had never been to. I would read more books by the author and congratulate her on a powerful use of many different POV throughout the book.

If you enjoy down home country cooking with a side of mystery, then you must check out the Alafair Tucker series.
