Alyssa never could have imagined that her first accomplishment after high school in a small Mississippi town would be traveling to a land she’d never heard of and ascending to its throne as the new Elf Queen. But when her long-lost father, the Elf King, comes back for his daughter, that is exactly the future that he brings.

With the help of her cousin, her father, and others, Alyssa carefully finds her way as an outsider through the intricacies of elf society. Along the way she meets fairies, unicorns, and other beasts that she’d grown up believing were only to be found in myths. At the same time, Alyssa encounters a mysterious cult whose entire purpose seems to be the prevention, by any means necessary, of her taking the throne. After an arrow that misses its mark and a message written in blood fail to warn her away, Alyssa finds herself in a fight for her own life and for those of her companions.

When the Cult of the Wyrm finally makes its move, Alyssa must decide whether to risk banishment from her own birthright in order to wield the destructive forces as a weapon against those who would see her dead.

Join Alyssa as the sassy Southern girl enters the land of her father’s birth and deals with a stern priesthood, a stuck-up royal trio, and, of all things, a crush, as she comes of age in Kiirajanna.

Alyssa has grown up as the daughter of a hard-working single mom in Mississippi. Her mother always said that her father was special, but as she got older, Alyssa stopped believing in him. However, right after her high school graduation, her father arrives and he is definitely special. He is the elf king to the land of Kiiirajanna, and he as come to take her to the land of the elves where she will claim her birthright as the next elf queen.

I really liked Alyssa, finding her to be a wonderfully smart, strong, totally believable young woman. She has a lot to learn once she arrives in Kiilrajanna, including a new language, many elf customs, history, geography, protocol, and a totally different way of viewing the world.

I was hooked from the opening sentence of this novel. “In hindsight, I’ll admit that slugging the high priestess was probably a very bad idea.” I thought the opening was very effective, giving the reader enough to capture them before taking a step back and showing how Alyssa reached the place where she slugged the high priestess.

The other characters are also well-drawn and multi-dimensional. Her father does all in his power to ease her transition into this new world. Sephaline, her ranger cousin, soon becomes her best friend. Sephaline has a familiar, Booboo, who is a very protective wolverine. There is also Little Treebeard, a tree which Alyssa succeeds in singing back to health.

Alyssa discovers right from the beginning that she might be the prophesied dragon queen, but not everyone wants that prophecy to come true. The plot has a lot of action and mystery and the pacing is excellent. The land of Kiilrajanna is very clearly described and it seems to be a wonderful place, filled with amazing inhabitants, even though all magic is forbidden. Alyssa finds herself having to battle magical foes with the aid of Sephaline and Prince Keion, without having any real idea of how to survive.

This is a wonderful, exciting, magical story, and while I haven’t seen any references to a series, I’m really hoping that I will once again enter the land of the elves and find out what adventures await Alyssa. Readers of fantasy are sure to be captivated by this story.

Is it a crime to steal a heart?

Hounslow, 1768. Jack Blythe, heir to the Earl of Lampton, is a man with great expectations.

So when his stagecoach is held up by a masked woman, brandishing a pistol and dressed as a gentleman of the road, he wholly expects to have his purse stolen. And when he senses something strangely familiar about the lovely little bandit, Jack also expects to win his cousin Rupert s wager by tracking her down first.

There’s nothing like a highwayman robbing a carriage to kick off a story and that’s how this one begins. In this book highwayman’s a young woman, and yes, I know it’s been done many times before, but it never gets old. Well, at least not for me.

The scene was slightly humorous and you find yourself cheering on the highwayman as soon as she draws her weapon. Cora is a character I liked from the beginning, even when she was breaking the law. She’s got a valid reason and it’s not just to line her own purse with other people’s money and belongings.

Jack is also a likeable character and from the beginning he knows he wasn’t robbed by a man which keeps you reading to find out if and when he’s going to run into Cora and if he’ll recognize her.

I liked the dialogue in this story which I thought was fitting for this time period and the historical detail was well presented. I also like that there’s sort of a story in a story. Jack thinks Cora might be somehow related and that’s when the sub-plots kicks into high gear and keeps you reading on.

The secondary characters were also well rounded and seemed to have their own story too. Despite its 250 plus pages, it’s a fairly quick read.

If you like historicals, and like me especially look for ones set in England during the 1700s I think you’ll find this an enjoyable read.

Will they rip each other apart or team together and survive to discover the shocking truth about their guests and the mystery man on the mountain?

Sometimes it’s easy to memorialize the dead. This isn’t one of those times.

I appreciated how much time was put into describing the four most important characters before the mystery begins. It took me a few chapters to settle into the pacing because I was initially expecting everything to move more quickly than it did. Once I got used to the rhythm of it, though, I was really glad that I knew as much about these characters as I did. The relationships between and among them are really what drive the rest of the plot, so the payoff later on was well worth the wait.

The characters in this tale speak in a thick Scottish brogue that occasionally spilled over into the descriptive passages as well. Most of the time this technique worked incredibly well at drawing me into the plot, but there were times when I had trouble figuring out what was being said. While I completely understand why the author decided to go this route, it would have been really helpful if there had been fewer run-on sentences written in this dialect. Some of these passages were packed with so many different ideas that I had to read them several times before I understood what they probably meant.

With that being said, Mr. Meggy has an incredibly unique writing style. I never would have imagined that strings of curse words would blend together so seamlessly with his painstakingly detailed descriptions of the people and places who exist in this universe. Sometimes good storytelling demands a little vulgarity in order to accurately represent the mindset of the characters who live in that setting. This was my first introduction to this author’s work. Based on how deeply I enjoyed this mystery, I’m looking forward to seeing what he comes up with in the sequel to this book that is apparently on the way!

I’d recommend The Key-Stone of the Bridge to anyone who loves solving literary puzzles. This is one of the most memorable ones I’ve read in a long time.

After meeting the beautiful Rosenya Neboyia, Jacob feels he may have found what he’d been searching for. But with this meeting is the discovery that his dreams come with a responsibility, and that responsibility is bigger and scarier than he could have ever imagined …

The opening of this book pulled me in with its car crash and Agatha stealing a baby. I had hoped that the mystery behind her taking the only survivor would continue more but in the next chapter the baby’s all grown up and called Jacob.

I won’t give too much of the plot away but Jacob and a co-worker go and work in the US and it’s there that the mystery starts to unravel. Jacob’s had visions his entire life and it’s at his new destination that he learns of their meaning and the significance to him.

Ms. James did a great job with the setting. I could visualize this part of the US and Jacob’s road trip. It seemed like she’d done lots of research not only on the area but Native American culture and tradition too which made the book enjoyable.

There are a cast of characters all nicely drawn, and of course a romance that Jacob hints about early on in the story. The dialogue is natural sounding and at 157 pages the story moves nicely especially if you’re looking for something to read in two or three sittings.

If you’re eager to find a book with a little suspense, enjoy books set in the Southwest and love learning about other cultures along with your fiction, this might be a good pick for you.

Will is an easy guy to like. His empathy for other people reveals itself fairly quickly, but what I really appreciated about him is what a well-rounded character he is. He has realistic strengths and weaknesses that interact with the plot in ways that I often didn’t see coming ahead of time. I had a good time getting to know him, and I’d be interested in reading more stories about him in the future.

There were a few pacing issues in the beginning that threatened to distract me from the plot. A surprising amount of time was spent describing Will’s family and school. I enjoyed seeing what his daily life was like before he received this peculiar assignment, but this tale would have easily earned a much higher rating if some of that exposition had happened within more action-packed chapters. Eventually I did get drawn into Will’s world, but the slow beginning was a bit of deterrent for me at first.

I had an inkling that this book might be funny, but I wasn’t expecting to enjoy its zany sense of humor as much as I did. The supporting characters were just as flamboyant as I’d expect from beings who work for a magical wish fulfilment company, but the creative, little details about their costumes and physical appearances that the author made sure to point out to the reader were what really endeared me to them. Imagining exactly what each one of them looked like was effortless.

Whether you’re a kid or a kid-at-heart, Wishing Will is a good choice for anyone in the mood for something lighthearted.

This is a fast-paced historical crime novel with an engaging detective. There is no mystery about who the villain is, but there is a great deal of suspense involved in bringing the villain to justice. Toby has to fight crooked cops and brutal body guards. His only ally is Ruth Callahan, who runs the local newspaper. I really liked Ruth, a very savvy reporter who is eager to help Toby. Between them, they uncover a lot of clues, but they lack evidence which will nail any but the small fry.

The setting for the story feels authentic, and it has obviously been well-researched. I really felt as if I were back in the immediate post-WWII era, and the information about the Americans of Japanese descent who were interred during the war is handled well.

As the case progresses, there is a lot of re-hashing of the information that has been gathered. This does allow Toby and Ruth to process the information and come up with more ideas about how to proceed, but I could have done with a bit less of the going over of information.

The action never lets up. Toby has to work hard to stay ahead of the bad guys, switching cars, moving several times, and so forth. Several times is looks as if there is no way out for Toby so I was kept on the edge of my seat. I found it hard to put the book down, so I ended up reading it in one sitting.

Readers of historical crime fiction are sure to enjoy helping Toby match wits with the villains and I certainly plan to read more in this series.

Everyone is capable of doing things that may not be ethical, but not everyone is willing to admit when they’ve crossed that line.

Mr. Frankel pulled me into the plot through the use of one of the most exciting opening scenes I’ve read in a long time. Imagine two homeless men suddenly coming across something incredibly strange in the fetid, garbage-strewn alley they call home. It was most definitely not the introduction to this tale I was expecting. Not knowing what was happening made me eager to find out more.

I would have liked to see more character development, especially when it came to Harry. He experienced a few different traumatic events growing up that never quite had as much of an affect on his personality as I would have expected. His dazed reaction was completely understandable in the beginning, but this book would have easily earned a higher rating had the author spent more time exploring what happens when Harry’s numbness wears off. It would have been especially interesting to see which, if any, of his negative personality traits stem from this emotional paralysis.

Strong pacing from beginning to end made it hard for me to put this story down. I really liked how the author embedded crucial clues about Anastasia’s background into scenes that also had a lot of other exciting stuff going on in them. At times it felt like I was watching an action movie instead of reading a book. This was a smart approach for such an action-heavy plot.

Catnip is one of the most adrenaline-inducing tales I’ve read so far in 2014. This is a good choice for anyone who likes being perched on the edge of their seat in anticipation of what might happen next for 200+ pages.

I like this series that I discovered by accident and it might have something to do with it being populated with were-turtles and were-Corgis. In this case it’s a tiny fox and a very big bear that take center stage and it’s a fascinating dynamic.

What I liked best about this novel is the mystery of the missing girls. It’s a great backdrop to the main event, which is the romance between Crag and Violet. Both of the main characters are young and that comes through pretty clear, yet they are not stupid young. One has a debt that has to be repaid and the other has emotional issues. They are engaging internal conflicts that somehow get mixed up with the external conflict.

I liked Crag a/k/a Ash. I liked getting to know him and learning to understand that he’s a man trapped by evil design. He had thoughts about someday breaking free but didn’t have much hope until he met Violet. It’s her influence that brought out the best part of him and it was really fascinating how it finally came about.

As for Violet, I liked the interplay between her and her best friend, Henry. They were cute together. And when Violet faced the truth of her feelings for Ash, it was special.

Also, there is a reference to Izzy and Erik which were the main characters from the first book in the series where all the initial world building took place. Even though Baring It All is mostly a standalone read, readers might be curious as to why Izzy and Erik are even part of this current story. Well, Erik is the mayor and the alpha, so he is going to be involved in whatever goes on with the residents of his town. I think Ms. Red provided enough background to make a reader understand why Erik is playing a role but didn’t bog this current novel down with any detailed backstory. This tale is truly about Ash and Violet with everyone else acting as supportive cast. It’s all good.

The villain is whacked. On one hand, I thought that it might turn out to be like the first book – a villain, yet not. Not this time. There truly was danger and mayhem and a bit of twisted evil to deal with so it was a pleasant surprise. This story was not a carbon copy of its predecessor. The other villain’s comeuppance sort of confused me. I’m not too sure how Atlas ended up with him or how he managed to get the upper hand; that was weird. Actually it was a bit of twisted funny too so I’m waffling about its effect on me.

I also can’t understand why something that was a clear and present danger was never addressed for so long. I also didn’t get the step-daughter – was she really that clueless? I am very glad that the mystery and the drama and suspense were wrapped up in a satisfactory manner but I truly didn’t understand the value of some of the revelations or actions of a couple of the secondary characters. I think I must have missed something.

The one thing that was very clear and wonderfully easy to understand was the love that was growing between Violet and Ash. I think the major clue was that they couldn’t keep their hands off of each other. I really liked the fact that he chased her and he was completely serious about it. When they did get together, I can assure erotic romance fans that they will find their encounters very satisfactory indeed. The happy ever after was rather hot too.

On the whole, Baring It All was greatly entertaining and fun. I liked the characters, the storyline and the delivery. I laughed and shook my head at how the author so easily tossed about all the different kinds of were-beings that populated the town because it made it sound like such a fun place. There’s so much more to explore and experience in this world Ms. Red has built and I can’t wait to visit again.

Something’s shaken the secretive Elizabeth, but as he gets to know the beautiful city belle, he finds the only thing he wants more than her safety . . . is her trust.

She’s just eighteen and she’s already running from a man…

Ms. Bittner writes a mean western. She is historically accurate (she must have had a gunslinger in her family!) and she believes in true love. Those combinations add up to a good read. I’m going to have to go find some more of her work.

Elizabeth Wainright is going as far as she can away from her stepfather. He killed her mother and lusts after the gem filled necklace heirloom and the girl herself. She can’t stop him from taking what he wants if she stays, but she can run with the necklace and she does. She never anticipated getting caught in a stagecoach robbery. She also has no experience with the bad men of the west. She grew up in New York and that’s a long way from Montana. It doesn’t take her long to realize just what they want to do to her. All the men on the stage are dead and she’s there all alone. While she’s anticipating the worst, someone shows up to her rescue. He looks like an outlaw himself and she’s not sure that she’s in a better situation. However, he informs her he’s the local lawman. He also asks her if she’s a whore…

It doesn’t get better in town. It’s a town with few women and lots of men. Elizabeth knows she’s attractive, but she never drew much notice in New York. Here, she’s the main attraction. It’s a good thing she has the sheriff for a bodyguard.

This is a busy tale of men out for revenge as well as a story of love. Sheriff Mitch Brady falls in love with her and her with him. Her stepfather is still coming after her. He wants the necklace and plans to kill her. The wife of one of the men hanged by the sheriff is coming after him along with her ranch hands. It’s a rough world out there in early Montana.

I enjoyed the story and worried about the main characters. This author has a talent for drawing you into the story and keeping you there. I like that; it makes the book more worth reading. Now to find some more by her…

Shiver me timbers! This book kept me on the edge of my seat from the very first zap from the bad guy all the way until the very dramatic conclusion. Every time a new chapter started a new revelation or crisis hit the hero and heroine and kept them scrambling to make sense of the chaos that was unfolding around them. How they had time to fall in love in the midst of it is a credit to the author because it was a definite highlight and made it all worth it.

Felicity, or as she prefers to call herself, Fil, is a heroine who does a pretty good job of rolling with the punches. She has a typical modern independent streak that drives the hero, Spar, a bit nuts. She’s got a wicked sense of humor and Ms. Warren also gave her heroine some very clever internal dialogue that made me smile many times throughout the tale. Yes, Fil does some stupid things, but then the story goes on to show why she did or said what she did and it basically makes sense and keeps everything in character. There was one part where I knew something bad was going to happen because it was a typical storytelling tactic yet the author used it as a dramatic segue into the next climactic part of the book. Sometimes Fil’s rash behavior worked out, and sometimes it didn’t. The heroine isn’t a passive female character, that’s for sure.

I enjoyed getting to know Spar. Of course he’s sexy, eventually. He’s a typical male in spite of his magical uniqueness. I adored his protectiveness and liked how the author had him navigate his experience of feeling emotions for the first time. In some scenes he was so discombobulated that he made mistakes, and that made his character endearing, interesting and more relatable.

There was of course the external conflict and the bad guys are nasty. What they do to people is heinous and one character really got hurt bad to the point it almost reminded me of a scene in The Mummy, and I remember being freaked the first time I saw it. So that will give a reader an idea as to how villainous and evil the antagonists are.

This is totally a standalone read but Kees and Ella appear from the previous book to help out when the suspense, drama and action reach a critical flashpoint. I knew from the previous book how Fil was prompted to get messed up in this conflict in the first place but the author touched on the basics enough that a reader won’t feel out of the loop by starting with this book. However, since the first book Heart of Stone sets up the world building and Kees was such a big sexy hunk anyway, his story is one not to be missed just on that fact alone.

There is a secondary character that not only is helpful in this novel but as it turns out, she’s the perfect hook for the next story. Just as Ella finagled a way to get Fil involved, it sounds like Wynn is next. The interesting twist for Wynn is that she’s not completely ignorant of the power shift that’s going on and I find that fascinating. Ms. Warren picked the perfect scenario to guarantee my eager anticipation for the next book in the series. It’s so exciting!

Stone Cold Lover is an intense, wild ride that should not be missed. This novel should appeal to paranormal romance fans, suspense fans and definitely fans of Ms. Warren. I can’t imagine anyone being disappointed with the quality of writing, the intensity of the story or the sheer yummy hotness of the romance between Spar and Fil that culminates in a satisfactory HEA. I love the idea of gargoyles being heroes because they embody strength and focus of purpose. They scare the bad guys but they sure know how to love their mates. I’m so happy I discovered this series. Not only is it filled with drama and adventure, it’s been one of the most fun, fascinating and entertaining new series I’ve been privileged to find in a long time and I couldn’t be happier. Stone Cold Lover rocks!
