Wolf Shifter Mason McNaughton is tired of the crazy feral living in his house, endangering him, his brothers, and his sweet auntie Cora. Ferals are Shifters who’ve reverted to the wild stage, forgetting all about the joys of pizza and satellite TV. Not to mention, Mason is sick of waking up to the feral’s rampages in the bedroom next to his. The feral has been given sanctuary, so Mason can’t throw him out—the only thing to do is to find a way to cure him.

The problem is, Shifter healers—elusive, Goddess-touched Shifters who have the healing gift—are few and far between. Mason volunteers to go in search of one, and is sent to a psychic in New Orleans who might have an idea of where to start looking.

Jasmine believes in Shifters all right, but she vowed after her Shifter boyfriend dumped her to never have anything to do with them again.

The easiest way to get rid of the growly Lupine, Mason, is to help him, but Jasmine never dreams what that help will drag her into.

Wow, talk about an exciting opening paragraph! I think this is one of the fastest hooks for a story and conflict ever! There is no doubt that the situation is serious, dire and the clock is ticking. Can Mason save Aleck? Will he find the healer in time? What is Mason going to have to go through to find the healer? While the hero is off trying to save the day, who else is Aleck going to threaten, or even, worse, kill? After an opening chapter like this in Wild Things, there is no way anyone can just put this book down and walk away, especially not me.

The promise of the first chapter is realized all through the book. It kept my interest; it was exciting, twisty and seductive. There were definite moments of fun which often came from Mason and Jazz’s (short for Jasmine) interactions between themselves and other secondary characters – that includes all the dialogue and descriptions of their reactions. It was a very busy book.

When they finally find the healer, Zander, the scene that affected me the most is when he came face to face with Olaf. That held me emotionally suspended over a sharp point of a figurative needle. I had no idea which way it was going to go and I was quite fearful.

The novel is a great read with a lot to recommend it, not the least of which is the romance that grows between Mason and Jazz as they do their dangdest to find the elusive healer that so many have pinned their hopes on to save a man thought lost to not only them but his mate who carries his child. I like the dynamics between Mason and Jazz and thought they were a well matched couple.

Wild Things is a stellar addition to the series. It can be read alone or out of order of the series, which is what I did. I missed the last few but I never felt like I lost out while reading this tale. I knew Aleck was in a bad way from a few books ago, and I’m thrilled I was able to see the story arc come to a kind of conclusion in this book. I chose wisely. And I liked meeting Jazz – she’s good for Mason. This book is an easy recommend to paranormal romance fans and definitely for fans of the series. Don’t’ miss it!

Can an impossible love become possible?

Nagasaki, 1648

Temperance Marston longs to escape war-torn England and explore the exotic empire of Japan. When offered the chance to accompany her cousin and Captain Noordholt on a trading expedition to Nagasaki, she jumps at the opportunity. However, she soon finds the country’s strict laws for foreigners curtail her freedom.

Long ago, his father was accused of a crime he didn’t commit – stealing a valuable jade lioness ornament from the Shogun – and Kazuo must restore his family’s honour.

But when Temperance is kidnapped and sold as a concubine, he has to make a decision

Temperance’s trip to Japan isn’t at all what she expected.

Temperance had hoped that her trip to Japan would be a beautiful adventure. However, once Temperance realizes she will not be allowed to travel around the country; her excitement quickly turns to boredom. Consequently, she decides to do a bit of exploring on her own and meets Kazuo. Their first meeting leaves her wanting more, and once again she dares to escape the confines of the small island she’s living on. Unfortunately, this mistake proves to be very costly, and Temperance’s life is changed forever. I must say that while this is book three in a series, it can certainly stand on its own.

Temperance is a very easy character to like. She’s definitely naïve at the start of the story, but she is kind, caring, and always willing to help others. Her inner strength is put to the test more than once in this book, and I had the pleasure of watching Temperance grow into a great character.

Temperance and Kazuo make a very good couple. They are attracted to each other from the moment they meet, and I must admit that their connection is formed a little fast for my taste. Despite this issue, Temperance and Kazuo’s relationship still feels genuine. However, the restrictions on foreigners make the idea of a happy ending for the couple seem truly impossible. Ms. Courtenay did an excellent job of building suspense gradually. As this romance progressed, the couple moved from one precarious situation to another, and I wasn’t entirely sure that Temperance and Kazuo would find a way to be together without fear until the very end.

Temperance and Kazuo face separate dilemmas throughout the story. As they try to avoid being caught by various enemies, they try to tackle one problem at a time. However, the solution to both Temperance and Kazuo’s problems are found in the same place, and Temperance plays a key role in restoring Kazuo’s family honor. It was not exactly the solution I expected, but it was certainly satisfying.

The Jade Lioness is a very enjoyable book. Temperance is a sweet character, and I liked cheering for her and Kazuo against all odds. I recommend this tale to anyone looking for a different historical romance.

When the Earl of Merton suddenly finds himself playing the knight in shining armor to a damsel in distress, he knows his days as a notorious rake are numbered. But though the lady seems grateful for his assistance, she flees the scene without revealing her name. And though past scandals and present dangers threaten his pursuit of the mysterious lady, he knows she is to be his destiny.

I had a ton of fun reading this novel. A man no one thought would amount to much comes back as a man of worth. A man who doesn’t suffer fools gladly, a man of action and restraint yet inside, still alive in kicking, is his reputation as a rake. He has to balance the two but he’s stymied by people’s perception of him, and that includes his own mother. Talk about a great internal conflict. I really appreciate how Ms. Laurens handled it with grace, aplomb and charm. Martin, the hero, is an alpha personality tempered by his truly caring for the people in his life, no matter how difficult they can be.

Her personality, quirks and situation slowly get under Martin’s skin, and he’s hooked. Helen eventually falls in love with the hero but through the machinations of one of Martin’s relatives, she decides on martyrdom. On one hand, it’s predictable, and I was disappointed. On the other, Martin’s determination and unquenchable desire for her wears her down and his perseverance and stubborn conviction that she belongs with him serves him well.

I enjoyed the progression of the romance, the slight intrigue of why she was kidnapped in the first place and what the real reason was that the other guy wanted to marry Helen. It was almost what I expected, yet not. I really liked that surprise because it elevated my high estimation of Martin even higher. He’s a very smart and practical man when all is said and done.

What I also found endearing was Martin’s relationship with his mother. I enjoyed seeing it change and mature and seeing them come together as a family. Their relationship ended up sweet with a tart and cheeky twist. I liked it.

I liked many of the secondary characters and I enjoyed how they fit into the plot. I liked the dialogue in the novel and of course I enjoyed how all that sensual buildup finally came to fruition. Helen sure made Martin dance a merry tune.

As for Martin’s brother, he really needed a swift kick. As far as I’m concerned, the hero let him off lightly. I l liked Hazelmere though; he really tried to help but truly, he was as clueless about Helen as Martin was. Ferdie was the only one that seemed the most intuitive. I liked his character. My favorite scene was the one at the church. I love it when an HEA comes together.

All in all, Fair Juno” is a great historical romance and is undeniably entertaining. There is an interesting internal conflict with just the right amount of external conflict to keep the main characters on their toes, and a reader flipping pages. I’m a satisfied reader.

When Gaby Conte’s Italian husband, Danieli, abandons her for a young Peruvian waitress at a restaurant they co-own in San Francisco, Gaby seeks refuge in Rome with her best friend Maria.

There, she swears off romance for a long while and Italian men forever. That’s until she meets Silvio, who belongs to an old, aristocratic Roman family and lives in a palace alongside the best private art collection in Rome.

The last thing Gaby needs is more Italian trouble, but the attraction is instant and powerful, and against the backdrop of one of the world’s most romantic cities, both try—and fail—to resist the chemistry between them.

But both Gaby and Silvio have made a rule never to make the mistake of trusting in love again. Will they realize some rules are made just to be broken?

A powerful clash of personalities gives an overall ‘reality’ aura to To Rome With Love.

Lovely Gaby, a guest visiting Rome, is (against her better judgment) attracted by a stunning and wonderful man who is also arrogant and an array of other adjectives, all of which make him entirely unsuitable, yet oh-so-desirable.

Silvio, fortunately, has sworn off love, as has Gaby. That should be the end of it right there but…it seems like its more of a beginning! In fact, several romantic challenges are going on all at once: Best friend Maria brings Gaby up to speed on certain young couples before she even meets them, and then our daring main character tackles their problems.  There’s an unpredictable quality to the characters and problems and its simply fun to read.

More seriously, however, many a conversation is sharp and sexy and a bit confrontational.

Ms. Benet has a gift for using a subtle way with words of phrase to create a twist of humor or invite comparison. Her style is both clever and especially suited to this very contemporary story. Occasionally she goes completely off the rails with rather impossible analogies; they slow the story-line down, but they are infrequent. Other areas, from menus and cooking to the old cobblestones of the plazas, situate us in the heart of Italy absolutely perfectly.

Overall, its the characters that keep us glued to this one. To Rome With Love will be appreciated by fans of a range of genres.

This installment of Rhonda Parrish’s alphabet anthology series asks skilled storytellers to write around the theme of chimera. The resulting tales are part fable, part poem, part dream. But like any chimera, the parts make up a greater whole.

Blend reality with fantasy. Mesh science fiction with mystery. Mix history with what should have been. They are all chimera.

These chimeras came in every shape and size I could imagine and even a few I never would have dreamed of.

The main character in Michael M. Jones’ “E” was a spirit who was trapped in a high school after losing her own body. At first she spent her time shadowing the students there, but she soon found herself drawn to a lonely girl named Madeline. There weren’t many clues about what was going on, but the ones that were provided were irresistibly fascinating. I also loved how clearly the spirit’s personality was described. Even though I had no idea what she looked like, I could still picture her in my mind because of how much I knew about her habits, interests, and flaws. While I would have loved to know what happened after the final scene, this did work really well as a short story.

What originally attracted me to this collection was the thought of reading so many tales about chimeras. I was curious to see how twenty-six different writers would approach the same idea, and in many cases their twists on the topic were incredibly creative and memorable. With that being said, this anthology was uneven in places. Milo James Fowler’s “O” was one of the stories that could have used more polishing. The plot showed what happened when the surrounding community discovered what Dr. Horstmann had been experimenting with in his spare time. While I was intrigued by the premise, everything happened so quickly that I had trouble figuring out what it was the doctor had been doing or why the people who lived nearby were so alarmed by his work. There simply wasn’t enough time to explore the storyline the way it needed to be explored.

Megan Arkenberg’s “L” grabbed my attention when the narrator confessed to murder before the end of the first sentence. Immediately I wanted to know more about who the main character was and why she’d killed someone. It was the last thing I would have expected to encounter in a quiet, rural, nineteenth-century setting. Figuring out what was happening only made me curious to learn more, although I can’t say anything else about the plot without giving away spoilers. Like “E,” this could have easily been expanded into something full length. The fact that I’m so eager to know what happened next for both of them is a sign of how well written they were.

I’d recommend C is for Chimera to anyone who enjoys smart science fiction anthologies.

When tragedy strikes and Bobby needs Keith, he steps up to support his lover. But Bobby lacks trust in Keith and everything around him. Can Keith convince Bobby that this time is for real, or will the two lovers never reconcile?

Bobby loves Keith, but Keith is sharply aware of their fifteen year age difference. The two men met when their respective best friends started dating and sparks flew from the very first second. Neither Keith nor Bobby were looking for anything stable to begin with, but as their “friends with benefits” hook ups became more regular Bobby became more serious. Keith has warned Bobby from the very beginning that their age difference made him nervous, and so the men break up and Bobby is heartbroken.

I found this an interesting story. The pace meanders but focuses fully on the relationship between Bobby and Keith. Apart from the fact this is an M/M I’d actually say this is very similar to many of the older-style romances where the plot *is* the relationship between the two protagonists. I enjoyed how the author spent their time developing the story around the two men. The conversations weren’t rushed and all the scenes/interactions took their time. I’ve honestly become quite used to the quicker pace of action based plots and more modern, faster relationships. So it felt quite the breath of fresh air to find a slower paced book that really fleshed out all the conversations.

At times in the full length story I did wonder if some of the pace might be tightened, but I think that was my personal feelings, I got the impression the author purposely had the slower pace so the reader could more fully appreciate all the complexities that really surround a blossoming romance. I also privately wondered why the age difference between Bobby and Keith was so important, particularly to Keith. Fifteen years isn’t anything to blithely ignore – but it’s also not so incredibly uncommon nowadays either. While this might be something for some readers to consider, I honestly feel that the author meshed this in with the “older style” storytelling quite well. I did enjoy it, but just couldn’t help question whether it was really such a current/modern style of problem – particularly it acted as a big part of the plot and catalyst for much of the conflict. It was a pivotal point to my mind in the book, and I just wasn’t completely sold on it being such a critical issue.

I found the sex to be tenderly written – almost “spicy” as opposed to “erotic”. I had no qualm about this though, as this fit with the slower pace, older style of writing and far more emotional type of story this was to my mind. Emotional and spicy, rather than erotic and over the top. The characters were amazingly written. I loved how they actually started almost as protagonists – each the best friend of a new couple, Zach and Jason, and both Keith and Bobby were looking out for their own best friend and trying to extract information from the other. I found that a fantastic set-up for Keith and Bobby and it drew me right into the story. None of the characters were simple or easily understood – and that made them even more interesting to me. I also really loved how deeply emotional the plot was. In some places I genuinely teared up – at what both Keith and Bobby went through. I felt such a strong connection to the two men that I was deeply invested in both them and their relationship.

A strongly written, deeply emotional read, I found the characters and situations they worked through to be excellently written. While a few snags kept this from being a fantastic read, I really enjoyed it and will happily read it again and would eagerly read more from this author.

The Lord Vampire of Rochester doesn’t do a favor without a price. And now it’s time to collect.

Gavin Drake, Baron of Darkwood is being pestered by nosy neighbors and matchmaking mothers of the mortal nobility. To escape their scrutiny, he concludes that it’s time to take a wife. After witnessing the young vampire Lenore’s loyalty to the Lord of London, he decides she is sufficient for the role.

After surviving abuse from rogue vampires, Lenore Graves wants to help other women recover from their inner wounds. She befriends mesmerist John Elliotson and uses her vampire powers to aid him with his patients. When the Lord of London declares that Lenore is the price the Lord of Rochester demands for aiding him in battle, she is terrified. Will all of her hard work be destroyed by Ruthless Rochester? Yet she can’t suppress stirrings of desire at the memory of their potent encounter.

After Gavin assures her that the marriage will be in name only, Lenore reluctantly accepts Gavin’s proposal. Determined to continue her work, she invites John Elliotson to Rochester. As they help women recover from traumas, Lenore explores her own inner turmoil and examines her attraction to her husband.

As Lenore and Gavin’s relationship blossoms, the leader of a gang of rogue vampires embarks on a quest for vengeance against Gavin… using Lenore as his key.

This is a new and intriguing addition to the Scandals with Bite series that I’ve been really enjoying. I ‘met’ Lenore in the last book and I was very impressed with her bravery and determination. She is going to need every bit of that courage when she takes center stage in His Ruthless Bite.

Gavin, the hero, is as ruthless as his reported reputation and the author presents a reader with enough evidence to believe it. Yet I came to respect him and his decisions and judgment. The saving grace for Gavin is that he is fair, that he cares and not one of his people goes without his notice. He’s so different from what Lenore is used to that it takes her a while to find her feet with him.

The heroine has quite a bit of growing and healing to do. In the last book, she was tortured and traumatized. In this novel, which truly is a standalone read, she has a fresh start, an opportunity that she never believed she would ever have and a wonderful possibility for a great future; she just needs to tap into her inner strength and stand up for herself. Some of the things she does are amazing, and some are predictable. Part of learning about her own ability to stand up for herself has her testing not only herself but Gavin’s patience and goodwill. I found it interesting that in reading her point of view, Lenore can justify and rationalize her decisions but they don’t stand up to Gavin’s censure. She’s strong enough to admit when she’s wrong, then goes off and plans something else. Lenore is stubborn.

Gavin is an interesting hero. He initially has an atmosphere of ennui about him, hence the strange marriages he’s had in the past, and I enjoyed watching his waking up to love. As the story unfolds, there is an undercurrent of sadness and regret because of one of his past decisions and it comes back to haunt him. In exploring this conflict, the author shows a reader another aspect of Gavin’s character – he’s passionate and truly caring, and he loves deeply. Even when he’s supposed to do the unthinkable, he doesn’t because of how he feels about the person whom he had to punish. That facet of his personality plays an important role later on in the novel and it really solidified my belief that he is not only a good hero but perfect for Lenore.

Even with all the good stuff that is packed into this book, it didn’t continuously wow me; at times it was a ‘warm like.’ I think it’s because Lenore did predictable things, things that made me roll my eyes and think less of her. It was also in how Elliotson was portrayed. Initially he was described as nice and sincere, then it was sinister, then he was a fruitcake with obsessive plans, and Lenore’s reactions to him seem kind of waffly too. His inclusion was a necessary foil for the plot but it didn’t impress me much.

The fun scenes were when Gavin was wooing Lenore and those kisses led to more. There was a great build up from kisses on knuckles and necks to other places that made the pages steam. Those moments were written well.

All in all His Ruthless Bite has a lot to offer followers of the series as well as fans of historical paranormal romances. It’s entertaining and enriched with a few twists to keep the pages flipping. I liked Gavin and Lenore’s relationship and the promise of new beginnings at the end. This is a really good read and quite enjoyable.

When visiting Ballymorris in Ireland for a funeral, a down-on-his-luck American reporter learns of a story that happened only months after his last visit many years before. A group of four teenagers, three of whom are family friends, claimed to have been visited by the Virgin Mary. Almost twenty years later, one of them denies it ever happened, another has left the small town, never to be heard from again, another has become a nun, and the fourth has been locked away in a psychiatric ward for many years. At the time, news of the visitation brought much wealth and tourism to this dreary Irish town, but as the years went by, and after the Pope refused to officially recognize it as a true Marian Apparition, what had been seen as a miracle began to feel like a curse, and this reporter believes there is more to the story than the townspeople are letting on.

As he seeks out each of the four stories, each begins to take a different and sinister turn. Surrounded by secrecy and confusion, the journalist must decide how much of what he’s uncovering is the truth, how much of it is lies, and much he can trust the four witnesses-one of whom he’s become infatuated with-or for that matter, himself.

What happens when the story gets bigger than anyone ever imagined? It’s a real humdinger.

I’ve got to start by saying I’m not sure what to think of this book. I went in with one frame of mind, but have since changed it. I thought about this book after I finished and discussed it with friends. Yeah, I discussed it.

The main thrust of the story is an American reporter who happens to be in Ireland and is interested in a story about four teenagers who claim to have been visited by the Virgin Mary. I went into the book with the mindset that this doesn’t really happen. But I also mentioned that I changed my mind. The author isn’t trying to force the reader to believe in these sightings, but rather to get the reader to reconsider his or her beliefs. I did.

The book also brought into mind how four people can be a witness to a certain occurrence and each handle it in a different way. We’re all different and we should celebrate that. We should celebrate what makes us that way and how there really are one-size-fits-all…anything.

Now I mentioned earlier that I had a hard time with this book. I did, but maybe that was what the author wanted. To get me to think and wonder. If so, she succeeded.

If you want a book that will make you think, wonder and reconsider, then this might be the book for you.

As Beau does his best to keep Lily safe, they discover that maybe they don’t dislike each other quite as much as they thought.

In fact, maybe it’s just the opposite…

A barely-domesticated panther and a nun go on a snow ski date…no, this isn’t a kinky shifter book, but the fur definitely flies!

I love falling in love with the characters. Finding so much in their personalities, quirks and characteristics that when they finally say those three magical words, I’m right there with them. Lily and Beau are those kinds of characters. She’s a little snarky but it’s fun. He’s a little intense but it’s mostly just hot. When he takes her hand and explains exactly why he’s been keeping her at arms length, the chemistry is crackling off the page.

Their dialogue had me smiling and laughing out loud throughout the book. Lily has a biting sense of humor but it isn’t jaded or obnoxious. It’s just fun to watch her poke at Beau, especially, since he almost doesn’t know how to take her. Should he kiss her or put her in a head lock? It’s a toss up on more than one occasion.

I love their honesty. I didn’t feel like I was on an emotional roller-coaster. Lily is very straight forward and it’s clear that Beau appreciates it. That’s not to say they just immediately fall into bed and declare love on the first page but, once it’s clear that it’s only a matter of time and circumstance before they give in to the sparks, there is no holding back.

It isn’t all sexy fun and giggles, though. When Lily’s past comes barreling into her present, oh man, that was tense. I don’t want to give anything away but it just goes to prove there’s always more to a story than what a reader may first assume. The bad guy is bad but…that “but” is a whole other story.

Bound To The Bachelor is the first of six books by six different authors. I met the other five bachelors on the auction block and may need to check out their stories as well. I’m definitely going to go find Beau’s sister, Andie, and her husband, Heath’s story. They sound like fun, too.

I highly recommend this book and this author to readers who appreciate a full body romance with characters who are easy to love.

Is Lydia’s love strong enough to rescue Stratford from certain ruin, or will he save her life instead?

I am not insane. Strange words to start a romance novel.

An unusual historical novel set mainly in Bedlam, the well known Regency madhouse in London. Lydia Sullyard is dragged away to Bedlam without any reason being given for her incarceration. Her family desperately try to obtain her release, but they are refused permission to see her. However, her brother-in-law’s cousin, Stratford Bexley, manages to gain admittance and then comes daily to visit her. Lydia had developed feelings for Stratford before her isolation from society, but knew the man would never feel the same about her.

The author has researched her subject well. The inner thoughts of Lydia could have been boring but instead Lydia’s thoughts and reactions to her situation are engaging and made me want to read on. I don’t know how anyone survived the hell of Bedlam in real life – the rats, the screams of truly mad people, the brutality of the wardens – but Lydia’s way of coping was truly inspirational.

I did however have one moment of confusion. Who arranged Lydia’s release?

A very good regency novel with the two main characters gradually growing to respect and understand each other. Lydia softens and Stratford becomes more human. Very good book.
