And after a long, agonizing recovery—alone—Andy has come to hate Steven, believing Steven abandoned him when things got tough. When a chance encounter at a bar throws them back together again, it’s like the dead have come back to life and the past has come back to haunt them both.

Even though ten years has passed since a car accident killed Steven’s lover Andy, Steven hasn’t really moved on. He’s left his art behind and – just like his family wanted – joined in with the family business, but Steven remains alone, still mourning his lost lover. Only a chance encounter in a bar throws both Steven – and Andy’s – lives upside down, as Andy thought Steven had abandoned him, and Steven genuinely believed Andy had died. Can these two men rebuild their shattered lives and find a new way forward?

I found this to be a really emotional but strongly written short story. While the angst of Steven finding out his lover, Andy, wasn’t dead but he’d been betrayed into thinking so and mourning for a very long time is a lot to read I was pleased the author hammered all that out pretty much at the beginning of the story. There’s a lot of emotions and hurt for Andy and Steven both to come to grips with and I feel this could have really dragged the story as a whole down. I was so pleased when that wasn’t the case. Yes, there’s a lot of emotion and some angst and a few hurt and angry words, but this part of the story wasn’t extended longer than it needed to be and I feel it was really well handled – enough to be realistic and relatable, but not enough to be overly dramatic or feel like it was dwelled on.

I was grateful when Andy and Steven began to rebuild their relationship together. They both certainly still have scars and there’s a lot of work needed to be done, but it was clear they still deeply cared for each other and them both trying again was a lovely thing to read. I feel readers who enjoy this style of story will find it a quick and wonderful read, full of quite deep emotions and with two interesting, modern and very well drawn characters.

Steamy and wonderful, this was a lovely read and one I’ll enjoy again in the future.

Tatum was an adorable little girl who stole so many scenes in this novella. I adored getting to know her. She was a creative and joyful five-year-old who often changed her mind about what she wanted to eat, drink, or do next. Sometimes I giggled at how quickly she leapt from one topic to the next. She truly felt like a child of that age from her active imagination to her unwavering belief that her father could fix anything.

I would have liked to see a little more attention paid to Jada and Graham’s character development. The chemistry between them was fabulous, but I didn’t get to know them as individuals as well as I would have preferred to get to know them. They both had some painful past experiences that could have easily been explored in greater detail. I definitely saw a lot of potential for them to be healing influences in each other’s lives. It simply would have been nice to spend more time learning about who they were as human beings before any romantic sparks began flying between them.

Sprucewood, Colorado was a sleepy little town that I quickly fell in love with. The people there were loving, accepting, and genuinely kind. I couldn’t have imagined a nicer place for Jada to visit while she digested the terribly sad news she’d just received from her family doctor. She needed a soft place to land while she pondered her options, and that’s exactly what she found in this community.

Snowflake Cottage was a gentle, heartwarming read about what it truly means to be a family.

The thrilling and definitive account of the Abdication Crisis of 1936

On December 10, 1936, King Edward VIII brought a great international drama to a close when he abdicated, renouncing the throne of the United Kingdom for himself and his heirs. The reason he gave when addressing his subjects was that he could not fulfill his duties without the woman he loved―the notorious American divorcee Wallis Simpson―by his side. His actions scandalized the establishment, who were desperate to avoid an international embarrassment at a time when war seemed imminent. That the King was rumored to have Nazi sympathies only strengthened their determination that he should be forced off the throne, by any means necessary.

Alexander Larman’s The Crown in Crisis will treat readers to a new, thrilling view of this legendary story. Informed by revelatory archival material never-before-seen, as well as by interviews with many of Edward’s and Wallis’s close friends, Larman creates an hour-by-hour, day-by-day suspenseful narrative that brings readers up to the point where the microphone is turned on and the king speaks to his subjects. As well as focusing on King Edward and Mrs. Simpson, Larman looks closely at the roles played by those that stood against him: Prime minister Stanley Baldwin, his private secretary Alec Hardinge, and the Archbishop of Canterbury Cosmo Lang. Larman also takes the full measure of those who supported him: the great politician Winston Churchill, Machiavellian newspaper owner Lord Beaverbrook, and the brilliant lawyer Walter Monckton.

For the first time in a book about the abdication, readers will read an in-depth account of the assassination attempt on Edward’s life and its consequences, a first-person chronicle of Wallis Simpson’s scandalous divorce proceedings, information from the Royal Archives about the government’s worries about Edward’s relationship with Nazi high-command Ribbentrop and a boots-on-the-ground view of how the British people saw Edward as they watched the drama unfold. You won’t be able to put down The Crown in Crisis, a full panorama of the people and the times surrounding Edward and the woman he loved.

A complicated love and a complicated situation all the way around.

I had no idea how complicated and what a deal it was when Edward decided to abdicate. This was just simply history to me. Something that happened, but this book makes the situation come alive.

I will be the first to admit I didn’t know much about the abdication. I didn’t know much about the people involved beyond knowing their names. That was it. By reading this book, it brought the situation to life for me. Wallis was more than a name on a page. She’s complicated and cunning. She’s also in love with Edward–it seems sort of that she’s in love with his status and his position, but there also seemed like genuine love there. Edward was in love. He wanted Wallis because she seemed to be everything he loved in life–her freedom, her coolness and her ability to worm her way into situations. She knew how to be someone. She could be vain and snotty, though, too.

There were a lot of levers being pulled in this situation and so many players. It’s a complicated read, but it’s also worth the time. Pick this one up and go for the ride.

From the moment ex-police detective Michael McLaren arrives at his friend’s house, he’s plunged into a nightmare of a case. Two men, hanged a year apart, each killed on a Good Friday. A barrister. A solicitor. Related careers. Related by murder. Related motives?

Pottery shards, a torn newspaper article, and biscuits are found in each man’s pocket. What do they signify? And the blackmail letters Melanie receives… Are they related to the murders, or are they separate, terrifying in their own way?

Professions, calendar date, McLaren’s attack. Could it all be entwined? Or is the motive for murder something else, something so secret that keeping it is worth attempting a third one?

Ms. Hiestand has done it again! Somehow I’ve managed to miss a book or two in the series, and they are on my list to pick up. Not because you need them to understand what is going on in this book, but because I love the characters and want to fill in the gaps.

It was good to see McLaren again and his friend Jamie, and I was very happy to see him moving on with his life. I loved the character of Melanie and can’t wait to go back and see how they met, as well as how their relationship has progressed. As much as I love the mystery aspect of this series, I am drawn back to them over and over again by the characters. Ms. Hiestand does such a good job of bringing them to life – even the secondary characters!

As always, the mystery was top-rate. I have to admit I was caught off-guard…good job with that! I always love it when an author manages to surprise me with the culprit.

Thanks for another outstanding read, Ms. Hiestand!

Single mom of twin boys, Olivia Banner, has her hands full juggling life’s demands. She doesn’t have time for her mysterious new neighbor or all the questions his presence conjures up, even if he is a handsome devil.

Toss in a complicated relationship with her ex-husband, meddlesome family members, and going back to school to provide a stable financial future for her and her boys, and Olivia turns to her gal pals for guidance.

Sometimes playing it safe is the right choice, and other times leaping into the unknown can lead to all the dreams you never knew you had coming true.

“My neighbor is a serial killer.”

This line is a few pages into this book, and made me literally LOL. I knew I was in for a fun time, right off the bat. You know what I loved most about this book? The characters and the town. The writing is really easy and flows nicely and the dialogue is natural between all the characters (there are a LOT of people in this book). I’m a huge fan of character driven plots, and this one checks all the boxes.

It’s obvious this is part of a series (we have a couple getting ready to get married, for example, and I’m sure they were the H/h in the previous book) but I never felt lost. I do feel as if the whole experience would have been richer and more fun if I’d read the previous books, but I had no issues following anything.

The author shows a realistic version of a divorced family, the struggles they previous spouses go through, the difficulties splitting custody of children, etc. I have to admit I did NOT like Olivia’s ex, Ryan, in the least (one of the first things he does is “smirk” at her and MAN did my irritation level rise at that) and had a hard time believing she’d even try to reconcile, but I’ve actually talked to folks who never wanted to try everything to keep a marriage together.

There’s a lot of angst and issues to overcome on the parts of both Olivia and Luke and that, also, is handled well. Olivia’s twin boys are realistic and precocious and made me want to tear my hair out sometimes (…see?… realistic!). Secondary characters were well-written and well-rounded and everyone was three dimensional and unique. I only have a couple of complaints: there were SO many people, sometimes I had trouble keeping up (this might have been different if I’d read the previous book) and occasionally the book did tend to be a little cheesy, ala your favorite Hallmark Movie. There’s nothing wrong with that, but it did cause me to have an eye roll now and then.

Really, though, this is a nice, solid small-town, character driven romance. You’ll fall in love with more than the main characters here. You’ll fall in love with the whole dang town and its inhabitants. Looking forward to more from Granite Cove!

Together they go further into this amazing place, until they reach the ultimate destination, a magnificent city of Native Americans that has sprung up at an ancient site. There she begins a relationship with a handsome young man with a startling plan.

Billy also meets a formidable enemy – the Knights, a shadowy organization with a mission to keep people like him out of their world. They reveal how the two worlds diverged a century ago and warn him to stay away at all costs.

When his daughter disappears at the hands of the Knights, Billy and his wife go on a frantic search to find her in the other city. It leads to heartbreak, then to a new beginning.

The story starts right off with amusing correspondence about mistaken identity in the early twentieth century. Then readers are brought to the year 2010 with Billy, the protagonist, who owns an electronics store. Little details bring his story and his world to life, and there are lot of them.

From Billy’s point of view, strange things are happening, places he clearly remembered are disappearing. How could that be?

We’re also brought into the world of Jim Hines, during the Crash before the Great Depression. However, after he falls off a building and then later wakes up from a coma, he notices that his world is…different. This is a second chance for him, but there is a downside to this changed history. He comes up with a brilliant idea to save the day, which in turn drastically changes the future.

The worlds of these two men are linked in an interesting way. John is Billy’s employee, and his story is just as interesting. There is a great subplot concerning Native Americans, and this is interwoven well with the story. The action picks up, and the characters experience all kinds of unknowns. How will they get out of their tricky situation? This is a fun story, a great way to escape and fire up the imagination.

Gripping, packed with twists and turns from the first page to the very last, this stunning psychological thriller is a rollercoaster of a read that explores gaslighting, Stockholm Syndrome, disassociation, mental illness, existentialism, and the search for purpose in an absurd universe.

Nobody was supposed to survive this plague, but someone did.

I was mesmerized by how much detail was included in the first scene. It described the disorienting sensation of waking up alone after a serious illness. Elyse wobbled around on weak, shaky legs while performing basic living tasks like using the bathroom and finding something quick and easy to eat in her kitchen. She was so fragile in those moments that I immediately empathized with how vulnerable she was as someone who was still ill and had no one to look after her. This scene sucked me into the plot immediately. It was an excellent, if occasionally a little stinky, introduction to this character and her conflicts.

There were times when Elyse made decisions that defied all logical explanations. While I understood that her mental illness made it difficult for her to tell the difference between reality and her delusions at times, her reactions to similar stimuli were so varied that I could never tell how she might react the next time they happened. It was hard to get to know her under these circumstances, much less come up with many theories about what was really happening to her. I’m saying this as a reader who was fascinated by the conflicts she faced and couldn’t wait to see how her conflicts were resolved.

With that being said, the ending couldn’t have been better. It stayed true to Elyse’s understanding of how the world worked while also providing tantalizing hints about what might have really been going on with her. I also appreciated the fact that it left room for a few different interpretations for audience members who had other theories about the causes of the strange events she experienced after the plague ripped through her city. This was the sort of tale I’d love to discuss in a book club or with other readers who have strong opinions about the storyline.

I’d wholeheartedly recommend Among the Ruins to anyone who enjoys stories that can be interpreted in multiple ways.

A Go-Go’s bassist Kathy Valentine’s story is a roller coaster of sex, drugs, and of course, music; it’s also a story of what it takes to find success and find yourself, even when it all comes crashing down.

At twenty-one, Kathy Valentine was at the Whisky in Los Angeles when she met a guitarist from a fledgling band called the Go-Go’s―and the band needed a bassist. The Go-Go’s became the first multi-platinum-selling, all-female band to play instruments themselves, write their own songs, and have a number one album. Their debut, Beauty and the Beat, spent six weeks at the top of the Billboard 200 and featured the hit songs “We Got the Beat” and “Our Lips Are Sealed.” The record’s success brought the pressures of a relentless workload and schedule culminating in a wild, hazy, substance-fueled tour that took the band from the club circuit to arenas, where fans, promoters, and crew were more than ready to keep the party going.

All I Ever Wanted traces the path that took her from her childhood in Texas―where she all but raised herself―to the height of rock n’ roll stardom, devastation after the collapse of the band that had come to define her, and the quest to regain her sense of self after its end. Valentine also speaks candidly about the lasting effects of parental betrayal, abortion, rape, and her struggles with drugs and alcohol―and the music that saved her every step of the way. Populated with vivid portraits of Valentine’s interactions during the 1980s with musicians and actors from the Police and Rod Stewart to John Belushi and Rob Lowe, All I Ever Wanted is a deeply personal reflection on a life spent in music.

What a rock and roll life!

I might be showing my age, but I remember the Go-Go’s. I rocked out to their tunes and thought, wow, this is cool that they are chicks and playing high-octane music. I didn’t know their names until later, but that didn’t matter. They were cool.

When I saw this book, I had to pick it up. First, I read other reviews stating it was blunt in it’s honesty and forthright in the author’s approach. Those reviewers weren’t kidding. Kathy Valentine tells the story of her life and doesn’t pull punches. She talks about her addictions to drink and drugs, but also to music. She is honest about the worry she wouldn’t fit in with the other Go-Go’s, but also her complete fear she’d be rudderless after the band splits. She’s honest about her romances and talks about her dark times in such bluntness that I felt for her. I felt like I was there with her.

If you’re looking for a rock autobiography that will rock your world, then this might be the book for you.

What happens when a besieged and rather small dragon comes to a vampire and says, “I need your help”? Or when that vampire comes to a werewolf and says, “I have a job for you”? The vampire goes and builds a resort for things that go bump in the night, deep in the Cascade Mountains. Riding the wave of Julia Talbot’s Bloodrose series, the multi-author Cereus: The Building features paranormal romance Sean Michael, Julia Talbot and BA Tortuga.

Julia Talbot’s It’s Elemental features construction contractor Chayton, a werewolf who thinks demon decorator Kenny is a little fussy, and a lot hot. They argue about everything from feng shui to sex. Will they be able to resolve their differences?

The Third Course, by BA Tortuga, tells the story of Marco and Stephan, werecats, pridemates, and chefs who meet their match in head-bartender, Faelan, who just happens to be a growly, sexy Top.

Finally, Sean Michael’s Smoke and Gold follows the head dominant of the club, Zee, who’s dealing with trying to get his playrooms just so and trying to figure out maddening dragon, Daniel, at the same time. Who can resist loving a dragon?

While this book is comprised of three separate novellas it’s quite clear the authors collaborated closely on their work. Woven into their individual stories were small snippets and cameo’s of the main characters from the other stories and so while definitely separate stories there was a cohesion and smoothness to the book as a whole that I really loved.

Readers looking for a slightly different, more complicated series of stories featuring a whole bunch of various paranormal characters in an interesting setting should find this book excellent value (three for the price of one!) and an engrossing read, just like I did.

It’s Elemental by Julia Talbot

Werewolf Chayton is approached by his friend and offered the construction job of building a very special resort specially catered to all the various paranormal creatures that could just a very private and luxurious getaway. But the Demon decorator, Kenny, is quite particular about all manner of things and the sparks fly between Kenny and Chayton.

I was a little nervous about this story at first – I often find stories where the conflict and tension mainly revolves around the two main characters butting heads really struggles to balance the sexual chemistry and attraction with the arguments and differences of opinions. I couldn’t have been more wrong in the case of this story. I adored how while Chayton and Kenny were both very strong characters and exceptional at their own work, they were both secure enough in themselves to at least listen – and usually compromise and meet each other part way. I thought the author did an amazing job balancing having some conflict and sparks between Chayton and Kenny and still unfold a believable and sizzling hot sexual chemistry between the two.

I also really enjoyed the smooth, easy banter between Chayton and Kenny. While it was clear from the start they were two different characters there was a sort of curiosity and open-mindedness between them both that just naturally led (in my opinion) to them wanting to know more, explore deeper, about each other. From there along with the zing of attraction between the two men it was only a short hop into bed and the development of a far deeper and more lasting relationship. I found this entire story fun and engrossing from start to finish and I was hooked from about the second page in. An awesome way to start this book and, I hope, the series.

The Third Course by BA Tortuga

Marco and Stephen are chefs – and both werecats in the same pride. They both find themselves drawn to head bartender Faelan who is a very growly and sexy Top.

I was utterly delighted by how much I enjoyed the banter between Marco and Stephen. All too often I find the troublesome type of behaviour to come across to me as bratty and annoying, but Marco and Stephen so obviously cared deeply for each other and there was always just that hint of laughter and amusement in their banter their actions made me laugh, not roll my eyes. It was also extremely clear to me right from the start that Faelan wasn’t just a good addition to their mix, but much needed to keep both Marco and Stephen from getting out of control and driving everyone else utterly bonkers.

I was really impressed how the author balanced these three characters so well together and how they each had their own very unique and individual aspects. Often in a threesome story one of the characters lags a little behind to my mind – is either overshadows or too close to an “add on” but that totally wasn’t the case here. While Marco and Stephen absolutely had a well defined and solid relationship already in place at the start, I could see how – even as happy as they were – there really seemed to be something lacking in the control department between them. Faelan was perfect for that and he really seemed a perfect fit which I just loved cos it made the whole progression from couple to threesome seem so natural and realistic. The sex was also smoking hot and really explicit – so erotica readers should find this aspect of the story really satisfying as well.

A great story with interesting characters and a wonderful threesome dynamic that I really enjoyed.

As the head Dominant, Zee is busy and on edge, trying to get all the playrooms ready for their eventual use. But a maddening dragon, Daniel, is just too much for Zee to resist, even with all the work he should be doing.

The chemistry between Zee and Daniel is pretty explosive right from the very first page. I’m usually not a fan of dragon stories so I was hesitant about this one but I was left really impressed and quite eager to read more. Daniel is not what I would think of as a typical dragon-shifter character. While Zee and Daniel are both strong, independent and dominant in their own fashion I really enjoyed how they interacted together. Daniel is not submissive in the style Zee is used to and while Zee is most certainly a strong Dominant, he’s flexible and can adapt in ways I don’t think Daniel had experienced previous to their meeting. So this was clearly a new and intriguing dynamic for both characters and I loved watching it unfurl.

Kinky and hot the sex was explosive between these two men and I feel the story will be very satisfying for readers looking for something along these lines. While nothing in their relationship is outrageously new it still felt fresh, realistic and not cliched to me so I really enjoyed the whole story and was engrossed from start to finish.

I really enjoyed all three of these stories and am looking forward to reading the next installment – Cereus: Opening.
