Games, Publicity and Love.

The plot revolves around what happened to Ava because of her stepfather and the actions preceding the event. This was the main suspense that irritated me until the end. What happened to her was only revealed until the end. I am not a fan of drawn out suspense.

That being said the book then tells about Ava and her best friend getting into a competition named Power Games to win a lot of money. Power Game involves BDSM and having the scenes publicized live into the audience. What happened afterwards was well worth the bit of suspense that came.

When she gets paired up with Roman… the chemistry between them… **sigh**

I truly enjoyed the relationship, or lack thereof, between them at the start and watching the progression from there onward. This is an very erotic read, of course.  And, I need to say that this book is very intense for a reader who is not that into BDSM or likes little of it in their stories.

But the writing with that progression from Ava and Roman being nothing to each other to being everything was truly amazing.

But perhaps Harry isn’t the person Ellie should be worried about. Because there’s a far more dangerous figure from the past lurking just outside of the new life she has built for herself, biding his time, just waiting to strike.

After divorcing her abusive husband, Ellie changes her surname and she and her teenage son settle in a small seaside town. Ellie and Harry pull backwards and forwards as she tries to make him confess his real identity, while Harry is determined to remain in character as the headmaster. Things come to a head when the past rears its ugly head and threatens to pull their lives into oblivion.

This book is a delightful contemporary romance set in a seaside town in England. The angst of teenage life shows itself in the past and present allowing the flashbacks to Ellie’s teenage years to come to the fore.

A pleasant book, not too dark, but a little bit of mystery added makes the story more intense, and there is also a touch of danger in the final pages. Thoroughly enjoyable.

DESIRE RUNS DEEP

Somewhere off the coast of Greece, a king’s ransom in gold, emeralds, and silver coins lies waiting at the bottom of the sea. Finding this ancient treasure would be a dream come true for marine archeologist Calista West. But that’s not why she’s here. She didn’t climb aboard Jonah Cutter’s magnificent yacht seeking fortune or fame. She’s come for revenge—against the sexiest, most seductive, modern-day pirate she’s ever encountered…

Like his famous half brothers, Jonah is a master of salvaging ships—and driving women mad with his movie-star looks and raw animal magnetism. Tall, dark, and devastating, he manages to make Callie forget her mission. Every moment they share under the hot Mediterranean sun is an erotically-charged adventure neither can resist. But when Callie discovers what he’s really after—the lost city of Atlantis—is it too late to change the course of her heart…or go all in with the lover of her dreams?

Looking for Atlantis! Wow, so not what I expected. Stormchaser is third in a series. I wasn’t aware of this when I selected it, and I had no issue following the story, though–as always–it will likely be a richer experience if you’ve read the others.

This is my second Cherry Adair book, and she definitely has a “way” that she writes. Regardless of the storyline, attraction between the H/h is hot, erotic and immediate. Looking for a seriously sexy story? Look no further.

Jonah reminds me of any good, fictional “pirate”. Yes, he’s the captain of a ship, but I could picture him hundreds of years earlier underneath the skull and crossbones. Dark, strong, mysterious. However, he’s far to honorable for that.

Callie isn’t as honorable, and it took me some time to warm up to her. She’s on his ship on a lie, a big one, and it was tough for me to forgive her for it because I liked Jonah.

The premise of the book was interesting, too … I love the idea of potentially finding Atlantis. It’s this big mystery that lingers and makes a person wonder. Very well handled by the author.

The only hiccup I had was the lack of a true connection between Callie and Jonah. Heat? Oh yeah, in spades. Lots of sheet time here. But that little “spark” that makes a romance reader’s heart go pitty-pat? I didn’t feel it authentically.

Still, Ms. Adair’s writing is strong, descriptive and very clear and visual. I’m only just now finding her, but thankfully, she has a full backlist for me to explore. And I assuredly will.

Jake is very good at his job. He’s smart, attractive, and he has certain skills that make him a valuable undercover agent, especially when women are concerned. The assignment sounded simple enough, but the deeper he digs, the more complicated the task becomes. Jake becomes convinced he isn’t being told everything. Will he discover the truth before it is too late?

Jake strikes me as a man who has reached a point in his life where he is ready for a change, but hasn’t quite figured out what exactly he wants. All that changes when he meets Meg. Suddenly Jake finds himself wanting a more serious relationship. Unfortunately, the timing couldn’t have been worse. Jake tries to keep his personal feelings in check, but he simply can’t help falling for Meg. Jake and Meg are well suited for each other, and I liked watching them get to know each other even though it was bittersweet. I knew he’d eventually have to tell her the truth, and I wasn’t sure their budding romance would survive. I do admire Jake for trying to be as honest possible with Meg. He gently leads her to the truth, never forcing anything on her. She is a smart woman and he knows she’ll eventually put all the pieces together and discover the truth about her grandmother.

Mary, Meg’s grandmother, is a very well rounded villain. I really enjoyed the chapters the covered her past and activities during WWII. It gave context and depth to her that really made her come to life in my mind. It would be easy to write Mary off as nothing more than an evil Nazi spy, but like all well-developed characters, she is a blend of good and bad. She did some horrible things, but also some very good things. I don’t like her, the choices she made, or the things she stood for, but she is also human. She cared deeply for her family, and she raised Meg in a very loving home.

I must admit that I wasn’t completely satisfied with the ending. I was convinced that Jake wanted something permanent with Meg. I hoped for a very happy ending for the couple, but was disappointed. I know that Jake and Meg care for each other. I can only hope that Jake and Meg find a way to a happier ending in the next book of the series.

I truly enjoyed reading A Bodyguard of Lies. The characters were intriguing, and the plot was well paced and exciting. I highly recommend A Bodyguard of Lies to anyone who enjoys romantic suspense.

Unless Light plays the part of hero, he risks losing everything. Including the two women he loves.

A rebel, a red-haired devil and a Moon Girl battle to save the world – or tear it apart.

Blood Dragons is the explosive first instalment of the new fantasy series Rebel Vampires from the critically acclaimed author Rosemary A Johns. Experience a thrilling new twist on urban fantasy with vampires, Rockers and dark romance.

First off, I need to state that I’m not calling this a romance, despite being (somewhat) marketed as one. More, it’s an autobiographical novel written by Light, a vampire. It’s written (ala the Notebook by Nicholas Sparks) in order to remind his human love, who is aged and suffering from dementia, of their past. Much of the book doesn’t even really include Kathy.

The author has done a stellar job, though, of capturing Light’s unique voice. Given that it’s in first person and essentially being “told” to us, it’s remarkably engaging and well written. He’s a tough character to like, at least at first. He’s so angry and rough… but as we get to know where he’s from and how he became who he is now, it’s understandable and he becomes more sympathetic. I’m honestly surprised at the depth of skill shown by the author to write the book in such a fashion and make it ultimately so readable.

I did, however, truly struggle with the abundance of British slang. I’m familiar with much of the commonly used words (like “chuffed”, or the fact that in the UK what we call a trunk here in the US is the boot). However, in this book, nearly ever page is packed with slang/British words I simply didn’t understand and often times couldn’t infer their meaning from the use. It was exceptionally frustrating and pulled me out of the story constantly. It made reading the book, which should have been a joy because of the author’s talent, more of a chore than I would have liked.

Additionally, I’m a big fan of happy endings. I don’t read Mr. Sparks’ books for that reason. This book tugs deeply at the heart-strings, and really can’t possibly end well (immortal in love with a mortal is just asking for heartbreak, yes?).

However, I’m still in awe of the writing itself. Descriptive, interesting, evocative. For folks who enjoy perhaps more “literary” paranormal fiction that will challenge the brain a bit, and creates an entirely new vampire mythology, then I highly recommend it. While I wasn’t a huge fan of the slang, and the impossible-to-be-truly-happy but understandable and ultimately, the only ending it could have in order to be satisfying, this author has writing chops.

When an old classmate that has his own skeletons in the closet reappears, Flora struggles to keep her past from influencing her job.

J.R. Lindermuth does a great job at weaving the private and professional lives of the citizens of Swatara Creek together. Each character has a deep back story and it seems that everyone has something to hide. From Peg, Jan’s only close friend, to Flora’s boyfriend Harry, who seems to be acting a little more secretive than he should be, each character makes the reader re-evaluate what is happening within the story. The depth of emotions and the interconnectedness of each individual shows the complex diversity that J.R. Lindermuth has struggled to incorporate within the story.

The multiple events that occur pull the police officers in different directions and the reader is easily caught up in the small town life and various focuses of the Swatara Creek Police Department. J.R. Lindermuth uses great foreshadowing and strong dialogue to promote a strong story line. Some notable editing errors take away slightly from the flow of the read. Overall the various interwoven plots and strong character backgrounds drive home the depth of the story and draw the reader into the lives of those in Swatara Creek.

The unexpected duchess

Archibald Salisbury, son of a viscount, war hero, and proficient in the proper ways of aristocratic society, has received orders for his most challenging mission: Genevieve, Duchess of Blakesley. How she inherited a duchy isn’t his problem. Turning her into a perfect duchess is. But how can he keep his mind on business when her beauty entices him toward pleasure?

It was impossible, unprecedented…and undeniably true. Genevieve is now a “duke”, or, rather, a duchess. So what is she to do when the ton eyes her every move, hoping she’ll make a mistake? Genevieve knows she has brains and has sometimes been told she has beauty, but, out of her depth, she calls on an expert. And what an expert, with shoulders broad enough to lean on, and a wit that matches her own. Archie is supposed to teach her to be a lady and run her estate, but what she really wants to do is unladylike—run into his arms.

One possible answer to the lack of viagra pill flavor and low toxicity. “Trying to make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear” is how Genevieve feels when she inherits a neglected duchy and becomes Duchess of Blakesley.

She is the neglected daughter of a wastrel duke. She has been raised by servants. She’s had no training in how to be a duchess much less in how to tend to the business of the duchy that has been shamefully neglected. However, because of a special dispensation granted generations earlier, the direct heir, regardless of gender, inherits the duchy of Blakesley.

Though neglected by her father, she has a grandmother who has confidence in Genevieve, and she also has a godmother who sends her own steward to help Genevieve maneuver through the quagmire of the ton and the business of owning and managing of the duchy.

The steward, retired army captain Archibald Salisbury, estranged third son of a viscount, is not all that happy about having to go where his family might see him, but he arrives in London to do the task Genevieve’s godmother sent him to do.

Straight away, he sees a strategy is needed. His army training kicks in. He sees Genevieve as a raw recruit with no ammunition–she has no suitable wardrobe; she does not know how to be haughty, act grandiose, or give terse orders to the servants; she has no clue about how to do duchy business, last, but not least, she draws him like a magnet. She’s beautiful, sensible, kind, honest, direct, sensitive, resilient, and has a delightful sense of humor. Consequently, even though they are in the same house, he communicates with her by letter if possible rather than be in her company—great way for the author to move the story along.

He guides her through all the social and business hazards of mid-nineteenth century England. She learns well, but her faux pas in her personal relationship with him throws a spanner in the works that creates a conflict that sends him running. Now she’s very capable, titled, wealthy, but so alone—calls herself an idiot.

How Megan Frampton weaves a love story throughout the story and how she resolves the conflicts to give Archie and Genevieve their happy-ever-after is a work of art. Good reading!

He tries to stick to his story and keep his head down, but it’s impossible to ignore bush pilot Jake Wylder, a sexy loner with quite a reputation around the small town.

Flying medical supplies around Alaska suits Jake’s wild streak and love of freedom. He’s perfectly content to keep his romantic encounters casual—at least until he meets JD. Something about the nurse makes Jake think settling down might not be such a hardship. Now he just needs to convince JD he’s serious—which won’t be easy, given his past.

Jake owns two bush planes and his company – Wyld Freight and Transport – delivers medical supplies to small towns in the Alaskan wilderness. On one of their supply runs, Jake meets JD. JD was hiding out in Alaska and had no plans to stick around longer than necessary. But can Jake make JD change his mind?

I found this a fun and light-hearted story. Jake was a total player – a bit of a good-natured hound dog really – and while sometimes those kinds of characters really irritate me I have to admit I loved Jake. While he was a bit free and easy with his bed-partners, he was good natured about it and genuinely didn’t mean anything bad by all those one night stands. JD, in contrast, has secrets and despite his attraction to Jake has no intention of starting a relationship when so much of JDs life is a complete mess right now.

I really enjoyed the characters, both Jake and JD were layered and I found them extremely interesting. There were also plenty of very strong secondary characters who I thought helped make the story really great. While much of the plot revolved around JD and Jake circling each other, disagreeing with each other and fighting their attraction, there was a decent sub-plot around JD’s secrets that I found really interesting.

Best of all I loved how Jake and JD didn’t just jump into bed, or fall at each other’s feet and instantly have sex. I loved the build-up of their attraction, the chemistry that sparked and grew until neither one could deny it, even if they did butt heads plenty. I thought this was a well-paced, realistic love story with a great plot and all that wrapped up together made this a deeply satisfying read for me.

With great characters, interesting plot and some steamy sex I feel this is a fantastic book and one I would happily recommend to friends.

In the not so distant future, will robots make the perfect companion-both in conversation and in love?

Tokyo Love is a deep story the looks into the depth of society and human nature and takes into account that modern technology can find a replacement for almost anything. In fact the main character, Kathleen Schmitt, is the head of a project designed to produce Personal Love Companions (PLC)-essentially robots that can tend to our every need that look, act and learn just like humans. With a rushed timeline and her job on the line, Kathleen is tasked with testing the very first PLC released. The companion, built after a specialized cortex scan is supposed to be everything that Kathleen finds attractive in the human species.

The twist, the PLC looks and acts just like Kathleen’s neighbor! But it doesn’t end there, her neighbor happens to be female causing a mess of emotions and confusion for Kathleen. Kathleen is convinced there must be a glitch in the cortex scan and the gender was wrong with the PLC. Since only a handful of people know about the PLC test, when issues with the PLC arise, from technical complications to severe errors in data processing there are only a few individuals that Kathleen can call on for help-with one of them being her neighbor.

This is a great story that takes into consideration the direction of technology, cultural traditions and human nature. The author, Diana, does a fantastic job at creating real emotions and stirring up conflict. The actions and conversations of the PLC named Ai, and Yuriko, the neighbor are humorous and the constant struggle with Kathleen’s identity and perception of self add to the plot and depth of the story.

The plot is smooth and works in the concerns and stress of work, life-balance, and even how a simple cold can throw everything into a tailspin. Diana does a great job at making the world of the characters-a world in a not too distant future-feel like it is happening right now. The overall questioning of human nature and the capacity to love are the pivotal questions that the author works to answer.

I highly recommend this book if you want to add some technology to your romance reading!

Nick and Tina both worked at The Corral and had been good friends forever. Even though Tina privately admitted there was a sexy attraction simmering under the surface of their friendship, she didn’t think a one night stand would be worth losing Nick’s friendship over. Nick loved being such good friends with Tina, but his hungry attraction for her was just too close to the surface. Despite his best intentions, this New Year’s he makes a resolution – to get out of the friend zone and into bed with Tina, no matter the consequences.

This is a fun romp of a short story. I am always a sucker for a plotline of friends-become-lovers, and this story didn’t disappoint me. While I didn’t find anything very fresh or new in the plot, I did enjoy both Tina and Nick’s characters. I found their friendship believable and their chemistry – while not hot – did sizzle and felt realistic to me. Readers looking for an erotic or overly descriptive romance in the bedroom might be disappointed, but I personally found the sex scene tastefully and briefly written. The consummation was satisfying for me and I felt it certainly added to the plotline of the story and wasn’t wasted or superfluous.

I was particularly pleased that the author didn’t throw in conflict just for the sake of having it there. I thought the heart-to-heart discussion Nick and Tina had was perfectly handled – honest and soul-baring without being overly dramatic. I especially was grateful that there was no “miscommunication” or half-hearted conflict inserted to add tension. I really feel the author should be commended for balancing the romance, intimacy and serious discussion.

A fun story about two friends becoming lovers and a short story I really enjoyed.
