This is the story of how America’s first women soldiers helped win World War I, earned the vote, and fought the U.S. Army. In 1918, the U.S. Army Signal Corps sent 223 women to France. They were masters of the latest technology: the telephone switchboard. General John Pershing, commander of the American Expeditionary Forces, demanded female “wire experts” when he discovered that inexperienced doughboys were unable to keep him connected with troops under fire. Without communications for even an hour, the army would collapse.

They received a baptism by fire when German troops pounded Paris with heavy artillery. Some followed “Black Jack” Pershing to battlefields where they served through shelling and bombardment. Grace Banker, their 25-year-old leader, won the Distinguished Service Medal.

When the operators sailed home, the army unexpectedly dismissed them without veterans’ benefits. They began a sixty-year battle that a handful of survivors carried to triumph in 1979. With the help of the National Organization for Women, Senator Barry Goldwater, and a crusading Seattle attorney, they triumphed over the U.S. Army.

Gone but not forgotten.

I had no idea how much women did during World War I. I admit, I haven’t done as much reading about WWI, so that’s on me. When I saw this book, I knew I needed to read it. Women in the war? I’m all in. I’m glad I did.

The book is written in an easy manner that flows well. It’s like reading a narrative, but with many facts thrown in. It’s not like a textbook. I got to know the ladies and see what they had to put up with–things like not being recognized as veterans after the conflict, being put down by the male soldiers, but also being absolutely vital to the war effort. They ran the phone lines! The author touches on suffrage and how women’s rights didn’t move much until the 1970s. I learned a lot and enjoyed this book quite a bit.

If you’re interested in a book that’s a lot about history, but a lot like a novel, then this might be the book for you.

Jasper and Lacy are best friends and despite the difficulties in their lives they have such a good time together it’s impossible for either of them to remain sad for too long. But when Lacy tragically dies Jasper’s world is thrown into chaos. Jasper meets Lacy’s Uncle Rob and despite both their regrets and deep sadness the two men connect on a level neither had ever experienced.

I found this to be a really emotional, deliciously complex and realistic full length story. I was thrilled when I connected and became very quickly invested in Jasper’s character and it helped me sink right into the story. I thought the author was exceptional in his handling of some deep and not easy situations – readers should be aware that while suicide is shown in the story I strongly feel it’s tastefully and well written, not glorifying the situation nor dwelling too deeply on the actual action itself. I can understand though that even with the light and delicate touch from the author this might not suit all readers tastes.

Jasper really struck me as a normal, regular and highly relatable young man. I was nervous at a few of the less-than-ideal choices the young man made, but was pleased the tone and overall writing of the story was hopeful and optimistic. I also really enjoyed how the complexities of the plot slowly unfurled – I was really impressed with how the author managed to slowly lead me along as the reader and soon enough I realised that nothing was really as it seemed; layers covering layers. This made me really excited and intrigued to continue reading long into the night. While a few of the twists in this plot didn’t feel particularly realistic to me I did think they wove together exceptionally well and made the story a real delight to read.

While steamy and sexy, I found the interactions between Jasper and Rob were well-paced (no immediate jumping into bed together, which I wouldn’t have enjoyed considering the circumstances that they met in) and I thoroughly approved of how the plot was not just a second thought or half-baked. This story had a bunch of all the things I love in a longer length book – strong and interesting characters, a complex and well-thought out plot, good pacing and some steamy M/M romance. For me, this book ticked all the best boxes.

Complicated, relatable and really well written, I loved this story and will eagerly be searching out more by this author.

Trauma surgeon Finn Thomason recently relocated from Chicago to Boston, where his focus on medicine leaves him little space for a personal life. Making a commitment to find a better work-life balance, Finn hopes he’ll also find a relationship.

Caught in an evening rainstorm, Luke shelters under a sidewalk awning…and encounters a handsome stranger. The two strike up a conversation and Finn offers to walk Luke under his oversized umbrella. Charmed, Luke accepts and asks Finn out for coffee in thanks.

Luke and Finn quickly grow close, but, as the summer draws to an end, Luke struggles to keep his connection with Finn while Finn tries to come to terms with caring for a man whose attention is pulled in many directions. Both men are scrambling to get it right, but only time will tell if they’ll learn there is more than enough room in their hearts to go around.

Can love be found under an awning in the rain? Of course, it can! That is what happens to our two MC’s in this story.

The thing I loved about this is how it is very lifelike. Yes, I know it’s fiction, and usually I’m right there with you, but this time, seeing them in completely normal circumstances and having honest reactions just made it a great read. Saying that, I did think Finn needed a slight tap when he started going out with someone who he knew liked him! Still, it was perfectly innocent, on his part at least, and luckily both Finn and Luke were grown up enough to talk over any issues, instead of allowing it to build up into a major misunderstanding!

Ella is a major player in this story, and I thought the author did a great job of showing just how confusing life can be for a ten-year-old. Luke did all the right things, but I was glad when Peter managed to work something out with his job.

There is something here for everyone – from steamy moments, to humor, to romance. With a great, contemporary setting, and a cast of fantastic characters, this was a read that I definitely recommend.

Sharon’s character development was well done. There were so many layers to her personality that weren’t revealed in the first few chapters. She’d been through some tough experiences in her lifetime, and they’d obviously changed her in all sorts of meaningful ways. The deeper she explored these parts of herself, the more I came to like her as a person.

There were some mild pacing issues in the beginning. Sharon was so shy about discussing her past and so slow to give hints about what was really happening in her current life that it took me a while to get into her tale. While I did eventually come to enjoy it, it would have been nice to have a little more action in the first few chapters while I was getting to know her.

Some of my favorite scenes were the ones that compared how Sharon spent her days to how she wished she could spend them. Few of the people in her life understood how feminism that was slowly changing their world in the late 1960s, so even something as simple as her wanting to finish her nursing degree and get a job at a hospital was unusual and bizarre in that culture. I was fascinated by all of the restrictions placed on her as a married woman and wanted to know if she’d find a way to make her dreams come true.

This is part of a series, but it can be read as a standalone work.

I’d recommend To Air the Laundry to anyone who has ever looked back and wondered if they made the right decision about something important.

Is Juno the source of danger in the village, or a victim of it? Benjamin must resist her beguiling ways and decide if he can trust her…until another death sets his smoldering worries ablaze.

This is my first introduction to Ms. Byrd’s work, but it will definitely not be my last. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, which was more mystery than romance (though there was definitely an element of romance…it was not, to me, the forefront of the book).

The cast of characters was relatively small – the village is there in the backdrop, but the main cast of characters can be distilled to two couples and two mothers. And, I would love to read more about all of them. I can see Ben and Juno getting mixed up with other mysteries. I would really like to revisit them.

The mystery was first rate – I was definitely surprised with the twists and turns. The characters were likable, and I found myself cheering them on (as well as shaking my head in disbelief at how slow on the uptake Ben was at times).

All in all, a pleasant way to spend a few hours.

A Coastal Carolina Novel The first step is the hardest. After a scandal, New York political reporter Reed Barfield is lying low at the North Carolina coast, writing a story about the seafood industry. But it’s the harbor pilots on the Cape Fear River who capture his interest—men who jump across ten feet of open ocean to grab a rope ladder and guide huge container ships into port. Men like sexy but prickly Justin Vance. After surviving an abusive childhood and a tour in the Navy, Justin isn’t fazed by his dangerous job—it’s certainly easier to face than Reed’s annoying questions. Justin isn’t out at work, and he doesn’t need Reed digging into his personal life or his past. But Reed’s no stranger to using his considerable charm to get what he wants, and as he wears Justin down, they realize they have a lot in common—and that they like spending time together. Moving beyond that, though, will mean Justin confessing his sexuality and learning to trust Reed with his secrets—if Reed even decides to stay. Both men want a future together, but can they find the courage to take the first step?

In particular, prickly Justin captured Reed’s interest like no one ever has. Are these the first steps for both men towards a lasting relationship?

I enjoyed this full length story. I found both Reed and Justin to be interesting characters and they captured my attention from the first chapter. Justin’s character could be described as prickly – but I didn’t find him stand-off-ish at all. I enjoyed that he wasn’t dazzled by Reed’s charm or suave personality. I found Justin to be a down-to-earth, private kind of person and this actually made Justin and Reed’s initial few interactions a lot more interesting than I feel they would have been had the two men been instantly smitten. This also helped add a strong sense of reality to the story for me and I greatly enjoyed that.

I liked how Reed’s back-story – the circumstances that had him out of New York and in a sleepy coastal town in North Carolina – was properly explained quite early on in the story. I also enjoyed the cheekiness of how Reed was meant to be covering an environmental story, but this story about the harbor pilots and the unsung heroes was what really called to him and was the story he felt passionate about. It helped flesh out Reed into more than just a story-hound chasing glory and the next big break and into a more real person, someone who was passionate about their work, but also wanted to tell real stories and shed light onto people who deserve it. I found it easy to get caught up in Reed’s enthusiasm and passion and this helped me get really into the story as a whole.

Readers who like a slow-burning romance should find this story really fits the bill for them. I loved how Reed and Justin had plenty of time to get to know each other and how they (and us!) discovered neither was as simple or quite what the other expected. This slower pace in the men’s romance was lovely and I found it engrossing to read. The sex was hot and emotional between the two men and I felt it really added to the story and wasn’t just thrown in to give the content an explicit rating.

With a strong and interesting plot, a good set of secondary characters and two heroes that I found engaging and deliciously complex this was a great story. I’d happily read more by this author and can recommend this story for most readers.

And Kimi has this thing about bugs…

Adjusting to a new culture always comes with a few surprises.

The world building in this story couldn’t have been better. I adored the way the narrator dropped me straight into her adjustment period in a new job on a planet she was still figuring out. While there were plenty of names and alien terms to learn in the beginning, the author did a perfect job of explaining who or what they all were while at the same time weaving together a picture of what this place was like and gently nudging the plot forward.

My only minor criticism has to do with how quickly the ending wrapped up. It would have been helpful to have a little more time to piece together what was going on with the bug festival. The clues were all there. I simply wished there had been a more thorough explanation of how they fit together and why everything shook out the way it did. With that being said, this was still something I enjoyed reading quite a bit.

Kimi was such an interesting character. I felt like I got to know him well over the course of the plot despite the fact that I wasn’t even sure which pronoun to use when I first met him. It was well worth the effort I needed to put forth in order to find all of the small hints about his personality that lead to big reveals about what role he would serve in the way this tale played out.

I’d heartily recommend Eating Bugs to anyone who has ever encountered something new that simultaneously fascinated and horrified them.

Lila Bennett’s bad choices have finally caught up with her. And one of those decisions has split her life in two. Literally.

In one life, she’s taken hostage by someone who appears to be a stranger but knows too much. As she’s trapped in a concrete cell, her kidnapper forces her to face what she’s done or be killed. In an alternate life, she eludes her captor but is hunted by someone who is dismantling her happiness, exposing one secret at a time.

But brand viagra has been proved as the significant mechanisms to get succeeded in the impotency redeem action. The troublesome thing about viruses, spywares, worms, and rootkits, is that they are difficult viagra online amerikabulteni.com to detect until they’ve started causing real damage.
Lila’s decorated career as a criminal defense attorney, her marriage, and her life are on the line. She must make a list of those she’s wronged—both in and out of the courtroom—to determine who is out to get her before it’s too late. But even if she can pinpoint her assailant, will she survive? And if she does, which parts of her life are worth saving, and which parts must die? Because one thing’s for certain—life as Lila Bennett knew it is over.

Lila Bennett’s day starts out amazingly well. She won a big case and, despite the anger from the prosecution’s side, she’s flying high on that victory. That is, until her boss convinces her to meet him for a drink before going home. It is her biggest mistake in more ways than she’ll ever know.

This was one of the more unusual books I’ve read this year. At the moment of the attempted kidnapping, Lila’s world splits into two realities. In one, she narrowly escapes her captor and goes on to try and right all the wrongs she’s committed in the past, trying for a better life. In the other, she’s taken hostage and held captive. And right up until the very end, you’re not sure which reality is the real one. Even then, you’re still left wondering if maybe you were duped. I know I put the book down after I finished and wondered whether either reality had been real.

At first, I wasn’t sure what to think about Lila, but the more you get to know her and her past deeds, you realize she wasn’t a very good person. However, she really does strive for redemption though both realities, accepting her faults and wanting to make amends. Captured Lila has no other choice, but Free Lila is making amends as a thank you for avoiding the fate of Captured Lila.

I was very proud of myself with this novel, however. It’s very, very rare for me to figure out who the bad guy is when I’m reading this kind of book. I’m not sure if I’m not paying close enough attention or if I’m too absorbed in the story itself to care, but for the first time in recent memory, I figured it out. That said, every time I thought, “Oh, her captor is…” the next chapter had me doubting myself all over again. After all, Lila had no shortage of enemies. Even though I’d figured it out, the reasons for their behavior hadn’t ever occurred to me, so that was still a surprise in the end.

The Two Lila Bennetts is one of the most unusual and engaging novels I’ve read all year. Each reality grabbed my attention and held it. And those rare moments when the two came together made my nerdy little heart shout with joy. The writing duo of Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke have done it again. Every book gets better and better, leaving me eager for the next. I can’t wait to see what they have in store for the next novel.
