Following Across the Sea Beyond Skye, the saga of the MacKenzie family continues.

With the father, Donald, emancipated from indenture and offered employment by the benefactor, the social and economic fortunes of the family advanced. Yet, despite their prospering, they were mindful of their displacement and London’s propensity toward despotic cruelty. They aired little surprise on hearing the contemptuous responses of the throne and Parliament to colonial complaints and predicted arrogance encroaching on the rights and freedom of others would finally arouse the oppressed to be free of the domination and oppressive taxation.

On graduating with MD, encouraged by Benjamin Rush, he returned to Scotland to study surgery under the best at Edinburgh University. Between semesters, he traveled north to his birthplace to find the glens quite deserted.

The storyline elaborated the enormous influence diminutive Scotland, the poorest and yet most literate country in Europe, had with the influx of academicians from its shores expounding the ideas of the Enlightenment providing fuel in the movement toward independence. One such educator was the young William Small, Professor of Moral Philosophy at William and Mary, who exposed his students to the writings of the brightest philosophers in Edinburgh. One young mind that became captivated with the egalitarian concept of natural rights was that of Thomas Jefferson.

This book picks up right in the middle of an exciting moment, directly from the point book one left off, but there is a synopsis at the beginning to catch you up if you need that. The first book was great, and this book is just as entertaining if not better.

Elizabeth Rodger is a talented writer who excels at recreating a world of the past. Her vivid details illuminate the setting so well that readers can imagine they’re there. This only makes the exciting storyline unroll all the better. The characters are lovable, and the things they go through will have readers nervous for them.

Though it’s set in commonly-known historical episodes, one will wonder how the characters will be personally affected by the chaos going on around them. Where book one dealt with the brother who became a lawyer, book two features his younger brother who becomes a doctor. It’s fascinating to get an inside look into medical training in the eighteenth century, and the doctor here goes further and researches Native American medicine. Things get even better when he goes to a famous medical school in Scotland to learn to become a surgeon. Hearing about the school that has an historical reputation is very interesting. What readers will learn about the school and the town could be surprising to many people.

The doctor’s adventures in Scotland and then in America again will keep pages turning. The added bonus is discovering just how much Scottish people beneficially affected the birth of a nation (The United States). They played a bigger role in this than many might suspect.

Our characters get involved first with the French and Indian War in America then see the beginnings of the American Revolution. The doctor is friends with Thomas Jefferson as a young man and offers great insights into his thoughts. Even romance is thrown into this story. Those who love history are sure to enjoy this adventurous tale.

Surviving an abduction, and running home to hide, might seem like a good idea. Except home is now run by vampires.

Deborah Carmichael had it all. Fame, fortune, and an amazing gift bringing songs to life on her piano. Until a madman began stalking her. At first he seemed harmless, attending her concerts, asking for autographs. Then he turned creepy, sending photos of himself, wearing identical dresses she wore, including dressing up mannequins in her likeness. But one night she made a deadly mistake: sending her bodyguard away. It was the perfect opportunity for her abductor to strike.

When a beautiful, troubled young woman walks into his club, he is instantly taken by her. As he helps her overcome her fears, teaching her to stand up and fight, Zach discovers she is the one. His light.

When her abductor finds her, and takes her captive, Deborah fears this will be the end. Will Zach locate her in time, or will Deborah find the strength to fight?

Warning, this story deals with stalker-ish behavior, someone being held against their will, almost raped, and post traumatic situations. If this will trigger you, please turn away.

Deborah, a famous pianist, was walking into her apartment after a long day but when she enters, she felt that something was wrong. What she didn’t expect was to find Peter Milligan in her kitchen. Peter had been a stalker, sending her pictures of him naked and with a doll that looked like her positioned in sexual situations. He had been at every concert she had and she placed a restraining order against him.

Zach is a shape-shifter who owns several clubs that deal with the paranormal characters such as vampires, werewolves and other creatures. The world had changed after the vampire uprising which had caused the place to be somewhat destroyed. His club was a safe place for vampires to take blood from willing victims. The place had strict rules and those that broke them were punished. Ginny is a waitress who works there and asked Zach if he would take Deborah under his wing and teach her self-defense.

Deborah was a strong woman with a great career. She’s well-known and famous. After the incident she has no self confidence panic attacks and unable to stay anywhere by herself. She is haunted by what happened. Enter Zach, whom Ginny asked to teach her friend self-defense to help regain her self confidence. When he first meets her there is an instant attraction he feels for her. Being a shapeshifter, they feel that there was only one person for them. When he meets her he knows that she is the one for him. He makes sure that he does his best to teach her self-defense. I enjoyed the way he was tender and careful until he earns her trust. He seduces her with soft kisses and touches, never pushing her for more. Their lovemaking was hot and tender, and Zach made sure that she had the opportunity to say no at any time. This shows the bond that grew between them. Some parts of the story happened a bit fast for me, but might be fine for other readers. The author did a great job in showing people how strong they can be after a tragedy.

This is a great read.

Lotte pairing.

With the help of his sister, Gwen Lotte, Arthur, and two twins visiting their uncle for the summer, Mordy and Morgan Lafayette, Lance learns the true meaning of friendship, and just how far he will go to save the people he loves.

Life can throw many things at you, especially when you are young. For Lance, one of those things was something some of us never even have to consider. For Lance, it was his whole identity.

The writing in this story gives an eloquent picture of the struggle Lance had, not only to become the person he knew he was inside but to also fight the uphill, never-ending battle with people who knew him ‘before.’

Add into that someone who loves him as he is plus someone who wants to love him and you get a very confused Lance. And then there is the other side of this story. The story involving Arthur, Mordred, Morgana, Viviene, and Emrys. Some can do magic, some can’t. Some believe in their past lives, some don’t. There is a mixture of magic in this book, from Celtic Wicca (Gwen) to Santeria (Mordy and Morgan) to Bruja (Lance).

This was an interesting read with plenty of action to keep the reader turning the pages. Not only do they have the big bad to figure out but also Lance and Arthur have to figure out themselves too. The character relationships were brilliantly written as they interacted with each other.

A different book in the mix of King Arthur books out there but one I thoroughly enjoyed. Definitely recommended by me.

Can science solve any problem?

The world building was fantastic. Ms. Kuchinskas thought of everything from what people ate, to why they avoided going outdoors during daylight hours as much as possible, to how everyone stayed as healthy as possible in this future version of Earth that had experienced multiple deadly pandemics over the years. I was fascinated by how many parts of the average person’s schedule was different from life in our era. The only thing better than this was looking for the ways in which life was surprisingly similar as well.

Just like I mentioned in my review of the first installment in this series, I would have liked to see more character development. Finder was an incredibly interesting guy who lived in a society filled with medical and technological advancements that people in the early twenty-first century can only dream of. There was a lot of room here to show how he grew and changed as a result of the wondrous and terrible things he experienced. If there had been more evidence of him responding to his environment in this way, I would have gone for the full five-star rating without a doubt.

The plot twists were well written, especially when it came to the mystery subplot. While this work was firmly rooted in the science fiction genre, it did a good job of incorporating some of the things I’d expect to see happen in a mystery novel as well. Figuring out what might happen next and comparing my predictions to what actually occurred was a great deal of fun.

I’d recommend reading Chimera Catalyst before diving into book two of this series. Singularity Syndrome should be read by anyone who wonders what the future could hold for the human race.

Hired to help him rebuild his ranch, Sonya Tucker ends up helping him put the tattered pieces of his life back together. The capable, all-business accountant is on a mission to get the ranch up and running, but can he convince the temptingly beautiful woman to take a chance on him?

Sonya was dismayed that Austin had lost it all: money, family, respectability. Things she—who’d been raised by her mother at Nevada’s notorious brothel Wild Rose Ranch—only dreamed about. But working with the long, lean cowboy shows her that Austin is honorable to his core. Together they slowly grow to see what the love between them might bring.

Wow, talk about a bad parent. Poor Austin, he’s such a good guy and has a great capacity for forgiveness but after finding out what his dad is capable of doing, he has to find the strength to do what has to be done. That is where the heroine, Sonya, plays a vital role. It’s also where Austin’s ex has a significant role to play as well.

The theme of good parenting versus bad parenting is highlighted in this novel. It’s messy, at times unconventional, but the difference between the two (good vs bad) is clear and well delivered.

Ms. Ryan created her hero with enough depth, caring and humor, and with a strong moral compass, I found Austin easy to like. Sonya was presented as smart, giving, loyal and who also had a strong sense of family that she made a wonderful partner for the hero. I enjoyed how the author played one off the other, showcasing their strengths and weaknesses in such a way that I was vested in their success.

Secondary characters, like Roxy, Noah, Kelly and June highlighted the theme of family, love and new beginnings. They all were part of an effective supporting cast that enriched the relationship and growing love between Austin and Sonya.

The funny thing about reading this story was my outbursts at key plot moments. My hubby was watching t.v. while I was reading near him. I shouted at the book a few times, “Oh no!” and he thought something bad was happening for real. What?!! What!!?!! -“Oh, you’re reading your book. *heaves a big sigh*. I thought something was really wrong”. I replied, “Well yes, there IS something really wrong, for the hero”. He just rolled his eyes at me. Of course it happened a few more times and each time, my hubby reacted to my reaction and then was disgusted because it was only about a ‘story’. Don’t others realize that to a reader vested in the characters, the crisis points, the suspense and ‘oh my gosh!’ moments ARE real? They wouldn’t be if the author wasn’t good at their craft. Ms. Ryan is very good.

The plot was a solid one, and even though I knew what would eventually happen, the how of it is what made this novel a good read – entertaining, engrossing and worth the time. It had a wonderful happy ever after times two, and a just ending for the man who could be awarded the ‘worst father of the year’ 1st place ribbon. It’s sad actually because there were other options, and any and all olive branches were brushed aside. Having Austin finally and completely happy at the end was so satisfying.

I recommend this book because Restless Rancher is a really good read and Austin and Sonya are worth spending an afternoon with.

I found this to be an interesting and sexy short story. Mount, in particular, was an enigma who I found myself drawn to almost immediately. I was pleased that Meghan and Mount didn’t just jump immediately into bed and act on their mutual attraction. I loved getting a good sense of what both characters were like and how they fit together. Watching Mount and Meghan share some of their past and experience the peace of the solitude together really helped me see that they had a good and solid foundation together to build their relationship on.

The chemistry between them was smoking hot and when they finally both acted on their feelings it felt both right and intense. I felt it took both Mount and Meghan a little too long to come to the realization that they loved each other and were perfectly suited – I adored that William, their mutual friend – had to practically beat them each over the head with the knowledge. When they finally confessed their feelings it was a lovely and deliciously romantic scene and I felt a lot of satisfaction with the happy ending.

Romantic, sexy and a total fantasy, I found this to be a brilliant short story and one I will happily reread a number of times in the future. With interesting characters and a wonderfully secluded setting this story is an awesome, quick and hot read.

Family comes first. Desire second. At least, that’s how it’s supposed to be…

Lucian has better things to do than hunt down a creature who may or may not exist—a siren whose singing voice can heal anything. If giving up her life means Calysta would be safe, then so be it. However, the more time she spends with Lucian, the harder it becomes to ignore the powerful truemate call binding them together.

The line between true love and duty to family becomes blurred in this battle of the hearts, but Siovon and Lucian will learn the hard way that some sacrifice might be worth it in the end. That is, if it doesn’t tear them apart first.

Not your normal run of the mill vampire story.

Let me state first, this is the second book in the series and I have not read the first book. There is a backstory to it and there were details that were apparent at first. It took time to understand. However, once I understood some of the backstory it was smooth sailing all the way.

Siovan is a siren with a past. A bloody past. Her past has made her wary and distrustful. But she does have a small group of ‘friends’ that she trusts. I love reading books with soft, sweet innocent heroines but I adore these stories about independent, kicka** heroines who knows how to solve their own problems. Siovan is an assassin that can fight with the best of them and probably win as well. Her search for her younger sister has lead her to Lucien, the vampire prince.

Lucien is not just a vampire. Or a prince. His family is more powerful than the average vampire. He met Siovan in search of a cure for him brother’s ‘ailment’.

I have not read the first book but I do believe that the characters from the first book appears in this as well. This plot is also a result of the first book. Or a continuation from the first book with a new couple. Therefore, I suggest reading in order. Nevertheless, the author did a wonderful job of trying to make this a book that can be read as a stand alone. There are multiple plots which keeps you on your toes and reading until the end. There are scenes of violence, slavery and torture, etc. Probable slavery and/or violence to children. So be careful if those things bother you.

Lucien and Siovan has a chemistry that blazes through it all. Their interaction makes me smile every time. Both of them have a warrior heart and the combination of passion makes it explosive. The secondary characters was a blast. Every one of these characters had facets that make you fall in love. They are as different as day and night.

Readers who love heroines with sass and attitude will love this.

At the Battle of Culloden, fought in 1746 near Inverness, Scotland, a superior force led by William, Duke of Cumberland, and younger son of George II, routed a Highland army supporting the pretender to the throne, Bonnie Prince Charlie. Ordered by London to ‘give no quarter’, the Duke showed little mercy in the destruction of the Highland culture as his troops scoured the glens burning homes, destroying crops, appropriating livestock, resulting in the ethnic cleansing of the region.

The story followed the tribulations of Donald and Morag MacKenzie and their children after the torching of their home. Enduring a winter of hardship in a remote area of the coastline, emigration to the New World seemed the only hope of survival. After a harrowing passage on a disease-ridden schooner, the loss of the youngest daughter to dysentery, they arrived at Yorktown where Donald was sold into slavery on a tobacco plantation, indentured for a portion of the fares. Since the location of the plantation was in the vicinity of Williamsburg, Morag and the children traveled there and were sheltered on a small farm owned by an old Scots woman, Missiemac. Morag and the eldest son, Robbie, assumed the heavy chores on the farm while pursuing employment in town, hoping to save enough from their meager incomes to purchase the release of Donald. A loving relationship grew between Robbie and the crusty old Scot who came to look upon him as a son. She encouraged him to learn hunting skills from an old Indian, Netab. This proficiency enabled him to secure a supply of meat for the survival of the family during the first winter. During one of his hunting trips, he met and befriended a boy of his age, Jonathon Drysdale, whose father in his capacity as a school master encouraged Robbie academically. Meanwhile, Donald dealt with the obsessive quest for wealth by the plantation owner, Colonel George Pennington, pressuring his foremen to gain top productivity, the security of their positions relative to the level of viciousness inflicted on the slaves.

The book starts out in the thick of the action, on the battlefield of Culloden, 1745; then we, the readers see the aftermath of the English doing a Highland Clearing. We follow a family through hardships, distress, and courage. Their struggles are brilliantly written, with all the sense details we need to almost feel what they’re feeling.

The family makes their way to the new world, specifically Virginia. There, readers are treated to excellent day-to-day survival details that immerse one in this world beautifully. The storyline itself is engaging, as are the characters. What will happen to this family and their friends?

When the father is indentured, things seem particularly difficult, but there is hope, as one exciting thing after another unfolds.

The dialogue is written to reflect a heavy accent, and at times this can be tedious; though, this gives readers a good sense of heritage.

It is fun to get a peek into Scottish then American life in this era, seen through the eyes of a family, their friends, and their enemies—foes who mean them real harm. Tender moments add a touch of appeal in between harsher realities. Readers of historical fiction are sure to love this story, which is continued in another book.

There were times I laughed and times I got a little irritated. Cathwulf is very stubborn. She has her way of doing things and won’t deviate. She’s seen things and isn’t willing to change her thoughts. But then she meets Roark. I liked how the author treated the characters with dignity and a deft hand. The author does something different than most shape shifter books by having wolves touch cheeks to get each other’s scent.

There were a few things that I thought could be changed. I thought some of her stubbornness could have been toned down. I would have liked to see her come to understand that her feelings for Roark were deep. I would have liked to see her support him more in the major decisions he has to make. Also, the ending was very abrupt. I was reading along and then suddenly there was the glossary. My poor pets were surprised as I shouted, “What the heck?!”

Otherwise this was an interesting story where the I enjoyed how the author gave us a peek into a real wolf pack. She gave us a different approach to wolf shifters. The characters were extremely well developed. The plot could have been fleshed out more, but it was still interesting. If you want a good shifter book to keep you busy during this time, then this book is for you.

Grisham is back to his top form.

I’m a sucker for John Grisham’s books. I admit it. I ask for his books for my birthday, for Christmas…snag them when I see them on the shelves–if I don’t already have a copy–and devour the books. For a while now, some of Grisham’s books haven’t been my cuppa. I want mystery, suspense and to turn pages needing to know what would happen next. Some of the recent books haven’t been so gripping in that respect.

This book goes back to what I want to read. It’s gripping, there are characters I worried about and I wanted to see how this would all play out. I mean, the main character is a minister-slash-attorney. I’m snagged. I liked Cullen, the minister/attorney. He’s a bit of a sleaze, but he admits it. He’s also got a big heart. When it comes to helping those who aren’t in the best shape to help themselves and get out of jail, he’s on it. I liked his Don Quixote qualities. I also liked how he devoted himself to his clients, particularly Quincy. Quincy, the lifer accused of killing another being has a gentle giant quality to him. He reminded me of the character from The Green Mile. I wanted him to get his freedom and rooted for both him and Cullen to get what they needed by the end of the book.

This is a quick read and there is one gross spot in the book. It involves alligators in the Everglades and meat. I won’t go into details, but if you’re easily nauseated, then this might be the part to skip over.

But if you’re looking for a book with redeemable characters and an intriguing plot, then this might be the book for you. Recommended.
