A powerful memoir by two sisters about transitioning, family, and the path to self-realization.

When Orange Is the New Black and Diary of a Future President star Selenis Leyva was young, her hardworking parents brought a new foster child into their warm, loving family in the Bronx. Selenis was immediately smitten; she doted on the baby, who in turn looked up to Selenis and followed her everywhere. The little boy became part of the family. But later, the siblings realized that the child was struggling with their identity. As Marizol transitioned and fought to define herself, Selenis and the family wanted to help, but didn’t always have the language to describe what Marizol was going through or the knowledge to help her thrive.

In My Sister, Selenis and Marizol narrate, in alternating chapters, their shared journey, challenges, and triumphs. They write honestly about the issues of violence, abuse, and discrimination that transgender people and women of color–and especially trans women of color–experience daily. And they are open about the messiness and confusion of fully realizing oneself and being properly affirmed by others, even those who love you.

Profoundly moving and instructive, My Sister offers insight into the lives of two siblings learning to be their authentic selves. Ultimately, theirs is a story of hope, one that will resonate with and affirm those in the process of transitioning, watching a loved one transition, and anyone taking control of their gender or sexual identities.

Touching, riveting and worth the read.

I knew this would be a gut-wrenching book when I picked it up. I can’t imagine being in Marizol’s position–having your body one way, but feeling another inside. Reading about her transition, the bullying, the fear, confusion…I wanted to hug her. I loved that Selenis and the rest of the family gave her the love and respect she deserved on this journey. The parts concerning her birth parents was particularly hard. I can’t imagine what she went through at the hands of her father.

This book has been described as an open letter between sisters or a dialogue between them. It is. This isn’t all from Selenis’s point of view. Yes, she tells of how she felt as Marizol transitioned, but it’s more about Marizol. Truly.

This book shows how one can accept themselves, how their family can accept them and how it’s okay to be authentic. You have to be yourself.

Can she pull herself away from yet another toxic relationship, or will Caleb prove there’s more to him than just sex appeal?

Fireworks are definitely going off in this steamy novel.

Imogen sort of likes Caleb and he’s infatuated with her. There’s one or two issues. She’s super buttoned up and he’s a pill. No one thinks he can do his job because his father is hard on him. She refuses to let anyone in because she’s convinced they’ll leave her.

Conundrum, isn’t it?

I liked this story and read it in the course of an afternoon. It’s a quick read and the writing flows well. I felt like I was right there with the characters. Caleb is more than he seems and I liked seeing him grow through the book. Imogen was more of an issue for me. She’s a nice girl and a good character. I rooted for her to have her happy ending. The thing is, she can be incredibly distrusting and overthinks a lot. The overthinking was a bit much, but some people are like that. The scene in the club is hot, hot, hot. It’ll leave you with scorched fingers.

If you want a quick read to heat up a chilly night, then this one is for you. Check it out.

Deciding a week at Lake Okoboji, in her favourite childhood holiday spot, might have the magical fix for her problems, Georgiana is determined to find a solution and get her life back on track.

I found this to be a really enjoyable, happy and light story. While Georgiana’s problems are fairly serious, and a part of me found her solution (to taste a specific ice cream that started her in childhood on the path to opening her own ice cream store) slightly ludicrous, there was a happy, easy and lighthearted charm to the entire setup that had me smiling and eagerly turning the pages. For me, this is one of those types of stories where you simply need to sit back, relax and enjoy it – disconnect your brain and logic or reason and just go with the flow.

I loved the author’s writing style and really felt like I was there at the Faire Park on the lake, sun shining, water glacial blue with the rides and music like every wonderful memory I have of my own childhood. The author did an amazing job setting the scene and laying everything out and I found myself swept along with Georgiana and her cause.

There is a very sweet romance between Georgiana and Michal. I have to admit the romance is sweet and chaste enough it took me quite a while to really get into it and the concept of them forming a lasting and emotional connection. There was a fair bit of paranormal threaded throughout the story and while I feel like the story could have been equally amazing had there not been quite such a heavy influence of magic and fairies I certainly felt like it added an extra and interesting element to the story.

Light and fun with a hint of summer holidays, delicious ice cream and a very sweet and enjoyable romance, A Neapolitan Fairy Tale At Lake Okoboji is a great read.

Fleur and Beast are total opposites. Their first meeting was not normal or usual. Beast met Fleur when she was at her lowest. He stayed with her, for her. Fleur is a ‘yes’ girl. She is soft spoken with few friends and she rarely says no. She also likes to make people happy but this was one such occasion where it backfired. Beast is the Enforcer for the Salvation Bane and is used to blood on his hands. Though they are opposites, I love how comfortable she becomes with him. Their interactions are fun to read because she is not afraid to speak her mind with him. I have learnt that is unusual for her. But going through what she has gone through and meeting him, I can see why she would go through those internal changes.

A few possible trigger warnings: I would like mention that there are scenes of torture. The next point I would like to mention is the sex scenes do include anal sex/anal play.

This is not the first book in the series and it is a pretty short story. However, it did keep me connected and reading until the end. Fleur and Beast have an explosive chemistry which is exciting to read though there is much more to the story.

This is wonderful story for readers who love MC, who are okay with reading some harsh scenes and enjoy love’s explosive chemistry.

Now The Stag, Kern, is on the prowl — but he wants more than a one night stand with his perfect Faunus. If he can only convince his little mate to take a chance on him, and still protect his not-so-innocent lover from those who would do him ill for the magic contained in his body…

Who would have thought that going to a nightclub could completely change your life? Thomas certainly never imagined that but change it did.

This is the first book in a series so you get the introduction but not much of the nitty-gritty of our main characters’ histories. You do find out why Thomas is skittish at the thought of being with Kern but that’s about it. There is an amazing cast of supporting characters that I can’t wait to find out more about – whether through the continuation of Thomas and Kern’s story or their own.

The set up for the world isn’t exactly clear but I’m thinking it’s contemporary with a dash of fantasy. In other words, supernaturals are amongst us, we just don’t have a clue. I love the history about Manx and their protection but still, I want to know more.

This novella does end on a cliffhanger so consider yourself warned. Personally, all it’s done for me is make me want the second book immediately. I thought the ending was brilliant and perfectly fitting for this portion of the story.

If you don’t like cliffhangers, then it may be best if you wait for them all because, trust me, this is a fantastic book. Highly recommended by me.

I enjoyed how this story was short enough to read to youngsters, but still had a solid plot and a lesson for adults to help impart to children. I feel this gentle but important moral should help teach children about being fair, showing tolerance and not taking revenge when others treat them wrong. This lesson was repeated a few times – shown with the red and orange ladybugs, the toads and the frogs, then the squirrels and the chipmunks.

I thought it quite important how even though Ollie got frustrated when the garden animals wouldn’t listen to him and get along, Ollie persevered until playing with his own friends gave him an idea on how to sort his own problems out. While Ollie admittedly showed a maturity and wisdom well beyond his young years – I feel the delivery and lesson showcased throughout the story is a vital one for youngsters and is one well-deserved on repeating over and over.

The brightly colored pictures and easily-relatable style of the story should hopefully keep kids both entertained – but also help them learn the important life-lesson being portrayed here.

Fun and a lovely short read, this is an excellent book with a great moral.

I have been looking forward to this book since I finished reading the first one in this series. I am pleased to share that I equally enjoyed The Flapper’s Baby Scandal and now I’m eager to read the third in the series when it becomes available. So far, each can be read as a standalone.

This time it was Betty’s turn to discover her happily ever after. Her love match was Henry Randall and together they made for an entertaining read. Henry didn’t make my book boyfriend list but he was perfect for Betty. Henry had multiple personal inner issues to contend with but nothing that Betty couldn’t handle. Betty’s conflict was her father. While I found all the characters to be well developed and relatable, I continue to dislike Betty’s father, Mr. Dryer, as much as I did in the first book. I totally understand how necessary it is for him to be written the way he is, but I’m still hoping his demeanor will soften by the end of the series. Because their love is the strongest element, I enjoyed the chemistry between Henry and Betty, regardless of the sour note Mr. Dryer brings to the plot.

I actually read this book on an airplane. I was on my way to move my youngest child into his dorm room. I had a lot of anxiety over wearing a facial mask on the plane and the anticipation of saying goodbye to my son until Thanksgiving. The Flapper’s Baby Scandal successfully distracted my churning thoughts.

I’m a Lauri Robinson fan so I’m biased about her novels. I have yet to be disappointed. It’s very easy for me to recommend this book.

Annie Glenn, with her picture-perfect marriage, was the envy of the other wives; JFK made it clear that platinum-blonde Rene Carpenter was his favorite; and licensed pilot Trudy Cooper arrived with a secret that needed to stay hidden from NASA. Each woman is different and had her own set of challenges. If you don’t know the women, this is a great way to get to know them. I knew almost nothing about Michael Collins’ wife, nearly nothing about Louise Sheppard, Joan Aldrin…The only reason I remember Annie Glenn having a stutter was that John Glenn was our state senator forever and I remember seeing her on television.
