When Liza Radley realizes it’s cheatin’ season and no self-respecting detective’s gonna spy on her husband for the $800 and change she has hidden in a plastic soap dish, she does what any normal transplanted Georgia Peach would do–she becomes a private eye. While downing her fourth maple-glazed curbside, Liza discovers “Eye Spy”, a shop for the self-motivated sleuth in the heart of Boston. Inspiration strikes and she enters the world of Jack Parella, the owner/operator who talks like Humphrey Bogart but with a Southie accent and is more than willing to train Liza in the ways of amateur sleuthing, while simultaneously infuriating and titillating her. Though Liza starts the journey intending to rebuild her crumbling suburban life, she finds herself thrust into a fiery mystery as head of “Crimes of the Heart Detective Agency” with Parella by her side. Thus our dynamic duo is primed for their next adventure.

This story was fun right from the start.   Liza Radley is really devastated when her friends tell her that her husband is cheating on her. She tries to hire a wacky detective agency, which costs more than the $800 she had been hiding from her husband, so that is out. After eating four donuts, she discovers a shop that has everything a person would want to become a private eye.

Along with finding spy equipment, she meets up with the owner, a sexy ex-cop who finds the entire thing funny. So did I. I laughed and giggled all through this entire book. She was so naïve at first, but after discovering that her husband was in fact, cheating, she sets out to get even with every cheater she can find.

There are a lot of twists and turns in this story. Threatening notes to both Liza and the sexy shop owner, Jack Parella. He tries very hard to act like he thinks someone like Humphrey Bogart would behave, which I find funny. When they finally solve all the current problems, together Liza and Jack begin sleuthing. Now instead of just a spy shop they have a new agency called Crimes of the Heart. Liza and Jack are ready to track down every cheating spouse.

In this story there are lots of fun characters that I found quite endearing, including her three best friends, her mother and her father.

I never stopped smiling while I was reading this book, and sometimes I actually laughed out loud. This was one of the most delightful books I have read in a long time, and it is only book one. Another book is coming out soon, and I can hardly wait. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a fun story to read.

Worse, it alerts the Siah-dhu—a dark entity that seeks his kind for their special abilities—to his existence, and sets a bounty hunter on his trail.

When those same alien powers lead Gethyon to commit a terrible act, they also aid his escape. Marooned on the sea-world of Ulto Marinos, Gethyon and his twin sister must work off their debt to the Seagrafter captain who rescued them while Gethyon puzzles over their transportation. Being different is never easy. Gethyon Rees learns that at a very early age. Even as a six-year-old he is tormented and teased. His twin sister, Callon, fits in just fine. The twins are being raised by their grandfather after the death of their father. Their mother dropped them on her father-in-law’s doorstep and abandoned them. Gethyon cannot understand why his world seems so different from everyone else’s. But when he inadvertently triggers powers that he never knew he had, he begins to realize just how different he is.

Pippa Jay has written an action-packed, fast moving, and very powerful story. Gethyon is a complex young man, and he is easy to identify with. He has no idea how he manages to open up gateways to other places. He doesn’t understand who he is or how he got his abilities. But he learns all too quickly that the Siah-dhu, a dark entity, is seeking him because of his powers.

Not only is Gethyon a strong character, but the others he interacts with are also richly drawn. Callon loves her brother even though she doesn’t always understand him. Embar, their grandfather, is a very sympathetic character. He is still mourning the death of his son who had fallen in love with a woman from a different world, and he has no idea what to do with Gethyon. And Quin, the twin’s mother is very complex. She has left her children so that they might have a chance to live a normal life, not realizing that Gethyon has inherited her powers. We learn of her heartbreak at the death of her husband and the loss of her children, as she, too, has to keep running from the Siah-dhu.

The various settings for this novel are rich in detail. The reader can easily move right into these strange worlds, seeing and feeling the environments. The plot line is simple in the overall arc. Gethyon has to figure out his powers, save his family, and try to conquer the darkness. But the reality of these tasks is far from simple or straightforward, and the obstacles are overwhelming at times.

Gethyon is a wonderful coming-of-age fantasy novel. It contains a depth of understanding that goes beyond the action adventure. Topics such as family, loss, the use of force, and good versus evil, are all dealt with skillfully and sensitively. I can recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading well-crafted fantasy.

Sometimes a wife has to go to extreme measures to save her marriage. Cissy Holden isn’t happy. Her husband Len doesn’t help out around the house and shows little respect for her. Even worse, their sex life leaves much to be desired. The chemistry they enjoyed when they first met has faded and Cissy is at her wits’ end.

She decides to take matters into her own hands—literally—and introduces her wayward husband to the concept of a Female-Led Relationship (FLR). At first he’s all for it since he’s getting sexual favors for doing chores, but as Cissy ratchets up the control, Len starts to wonder if he’s less of a man if he lets her. Even more confusing is the fact that the sex, another area where Cissy has taken control, is through the roof. What does that say about him? Only time will tell if Len will fully jump on board, or if Cissy has made the biggest mistake of her life.

The unique and intriguing ideas Cissy comes up with to revive her marriage had me at the edge of my seat in anticipation of, not only what she would do next, but how her husband Len would react to the changes in their relationship.

It is easy for couples to take each other for granted after being together for so long. I think that this story and Cissy’s ability to take charge of her and her husband’s future as inspiring because it left me with a sense of pride and strength that we woman can hold the power to change our relationships and to demand what we want even if it means we have to dish out a spanking now and again.

While this is a BDSM story, it is more about the empowerment of woman, and a couple’s struggle to find balance in their changed relationship. Many dynamics in the relationship change throughout the years, as their personalities change. The author was able to demonstrate this aspect of growth in a way that was relatable as well as fascinating. I can say that from the very beginning the author had my attention and held it until the end. I could have continued reading on and on about Cissy and Len rediscovered themselves as well as each other.

Len’s journey in this story was probably the most remarkable. I wish that more men would be as understanding and willing to do what it takes to try and fix problems within their home. I really enjoyed the fact that he took the time out to try and understand his new feelings as he and his wife discovered new things. It allowed me to see the story as long term and not just a quick fix. While in the beginning I may have questions the validity of Cissy and Len’s ability to stay together, in the end I knew Len would do whatever it took to keep the woman he so clearly loved.

While I learned about Cissy and Len’s relationship I discovered more about myself as well. That is why this story of self discovery will be added to my read again list, and I would enthusiastically recommend it to others to read.

A Haven Mystery –
In 1922 the federal government built the largest facility for handicapped children in the country, hidden in the Shenandoah mountains of Virginia. It was closed forever in 1960 amid horrifying stories of deplorable conditions, overcrowding, illegal testing and sexual abuse of the young inmates.

Sixty-one years later, the academy is now a community college, all trace of its evil past swept away. Or is it? For under the campus of renovated buildings, escapees from the academy and their descendants still live in an elaborate series of tunnels and caves, hiding their differences and fear of the upper world.

Haven, as the residents call their underground home, is a happy, thriving community until they learn their source of power is about to be cut off. A resourceful young woman named Awen sets out to find an alternative source of energy. But someone in Haven is murdering people and sabotaging her efforts.

Aided by a professor from the college, Awen is in a race to expose the killer and hunt for a source of energy that will save Haven. Unfortunately, the murderer now has their sights on Awen as the next victim, and time is running out for the world below.

An entire community lives in the tunnels below what used to be the Parker-Dunham Academy for Retarded Children, a facility which had been closed in 1960. The facility had been closed because of the deplorable conditions under which the patients lived, and now the site houses Virginia’s Shenandoah Community College. Many of those living in this community, named Haven, were subjected to horrendous radiation experiments in the 1940’s and 1950’s. Children born to these “Testers” were frequently deformed or handicapped. But in Haven they have a good and satisfying life, that is until they learn that they will have to find a new source of power as the college converts its last coal furnace to electricity. Add to that the discovery that there is a killer in their midst and the tension builds.

Lara Nance has written a gripping novel which is much more than a mystery or suspense thriller. She has a real understanding for her characters who live their entire lives below ground. She demonstrates a true empathy with Awen, Gran, Billy, and others who are terrified of the Uppers, as they call those who live Topside. Then there are the Uppers, themselves, both good and bad. Awen likes to sit in classes at the college. She stays in the back and leaves the minute class is over, but she has a real hunger for learning. This leads to a friendship with Mimi, the daughter of a rich lawyer, and Jason, the English professor. Both of these people are good and true. Other Uppers, however, are cruel and vindictive, showing the utter complexity of the human experience.

Nance’s descriptions of Haven are incredible. I really felt as if I were underground where communication takes place using coded tapping on the pipes and the women long for things like a dryer since clothes take so long to dry in the damp. Many residents have trained pet rats to keep them company and provide comfort. And while there are a few who try to separate the residents into Testers and Pure (those not tainted by the radiation experiments), most of them accept and treasure each other for the many gifts they each bring to the community.

This novel is definitely a good mystery, and I didn’t guess the murderer until almost the very end. The clues are there, but lots of people seem to be good suspects as well. There are twists and turns in the plot all the way through, just as convoluted as the tunnels the Haven community lives in. But the novel would be an excellent read even without the mystery because of the way Nance deals with the sociology and psychology of Haven and its reaction to and interaction with Topside. I really enjoyed this novel and I would definitely recommend it to mystery readers as well as readers who want a different perspective on society.

In the stately nineteenth-century homes on Philadelphia’s Delancey Street, the wilder passions scarcely ruffle the peace. Murder is unthinkable, particularly a murder involving an upscale book discussion group, of which schoolteacher Amanda Pepper is a devoted member. Nevertheless, on the day after a heated discussion of a fictional heroine’s suicide, book group member Helen Coulter falls to her death from her roof garden. Helen’s death is declared a suicide but Amanda is convinced otherwise. Why is this admirable woman dead? And if she was killed, who performed the heinous act? Amanda’s investigations will draw her into a zone of great danger, where Helen Coulter’s ice-hearted killer is once more ready to strike. . . .

Amanda Pepper really enjoys her book club. She is a high school English teacher, trying to instill a love of literature into the minds of the students at Philly Prep, who are frequently bored. Therefore, to be able have a book club where she can talk about books with others who feel passionately about them is a real treat. Gillian Roberts uses the book club almost like another character. Opening the novel at a book club meeting discussing Kate Chopin’s The Awakening allows Roberts to introduce nearly all the characters quickly and effectively, fleshing them out simply by showing how they discuss the novel. As Amanda notes: “Good books are like Rorschach tests. What each person finds on the page depends on what she’s brought along with her. I know very little about the daily lives of these women. I see most only once a month, but I feel as if I know more about their values and concerns, more of what matters to them and who they are, than I do about many of my longtime friends. All of that is via the books we read, the ideas that fill our monthly meetings.” It is this book club meeting that convinces Amanda that her friend Helen did not commit suicide.

Helen Hath No Fury is the tenth Amanda Pepper Mystery. I am one of those readers who loves to find a series that is well-written with characters I care about and plots that are fast paced and exciting. I have now read two novels in this series, and I can’t wait to read them all. Amanda Pepper is bright and witty. She obviously cares deeply for her students, and based on the lesson plans she shares in these novels, she is an excellent teacher. In addition, she is a seeker of truth and has the ability to piece together puzzles in order to find the answers to baffling cases. She lives with C.K. Mackenzie, a homicide detective, and a cat, Macavity. She has a mother who is always pushing her to get married. These characters are loveable, and to have a series where the reader gets to know them better each time is a real delight. That being said, the novels also stand alone perfectly. No prior knowledge is assumed. No prior cases are invoked.

In addition to memorable well-developed characters, there is a terrific mystery with many twists and turns. There is even a side story about a student, a mystery in its own right, which ends up giving Amanda the clues she needs to solve Helen’s murder. The pacing is excellent and the pages just turn themselves. And I love the play on words in the title. It sets the tone for the novel as a whole, and also demonstrates the value of words in Amanda’s life.

I can highly recommend Helen Hath No Fury to any lovers of the cozy mystery, written to the high standards of a classic mystery where the suspense turns on the characters and the plot. This is a novel, and indeed a series not to be missed.

Through it all, Susie must come to terms with the death of her father. While Matt Ryder, the geeky neighbor boy, deals with the loss of his own mother.

This opening for Spider Brains captured my attention immediately. I was hooked. Susan Wingate has written a wonderful novel told in the first person by a high school student named Susie Speider. Susie is a wonderful girl, and Wingate has really captured the voice of adolescence. The plot is amusing and at the same time deals with some very important and difficult topics in ways that draw the reader in. As Susie tells her story, after being bitten by a small black spider, she develops the ability to turn into a spider when she is asleep. Riding on the back of her cat, Delilah, she visits the teacher who is making her life so miserable.

I feel that I really understand Susie and I like her, and I love her enthusiasm for words and their power. She has a lot to cope with. In addition to the two main issues she mentions in the opening of this novel, she also is still grieving for her father who died nearly a year earlier. A geeky boy named Matt and his father move into the house across the street and then Susie has to tutor him. Wingate supports Susie with a number of strong characters. Matt is very likeable and he, too, is coping with grief and bullying. And then there is their science teacher, Ms. Morlson, who obviously plays favorites in the worst possible way. She is every student’s worst nightmare.

The plot moves back and forth in time, but never by much and it is always clear where we are. The scenes where Susie is a spider in Ms. Morlson’s home are inspired. The grief of both Susie and her mom and Matt and his dad is handled realistically and with great compassion and empathy. The issue of privacy is approached as Susie’s mother insists on her right to read Susie’s diary when Susie starts acting strangely. Teacher-student interactions are explored so that the student’s side is heard. Finally, the use of medications and their possible side-effects also become part of the plot.

I think this is a novel that many teens would love. Universal themes are treated in a very direct and also a very humorous way. The first person voice of Susie works extremely well and we are definitely in her head throughout the entire novel. The language is distinctively hers, and she speaks directly to her reader, going so far as to tell the reader, “’Member? Please track.” This is truly a book to enjoy and savor.

When Eaton has the chance to use a sorcerer to fix the love of his life, little does he know it will lead to his own abduction.

Marty is beside himself when his eagle shifter is stolen. He knows they are mates and he’s willing to do anything to get him back. However, now he has to decide if he is willing to give up his hawk half in order to save his eagle. Sometimes love makes a man do crazy things.

To Enchant an Eagle is the third installment in the Banded Brothers series by Amber Kell, and I think it could be read as a stand-alone but full enjoyment will come with reading this series from the beginning.

Eaton Franks is a golden eagle shifter and a certified genius. I enjoyed him, he is one of those people who gets so focused on what they’re doing that they’re oblivious to the world around them. I enjoy geeky characters like that; add in that Eaton is gorgeous and yet doesn’t seem to realize it and I found myself in love with him.

Marty is the leader of a gang of hawk shifters and doesn’t think he’s worthy to have Eaton as a mate. I liked Marty but honestly thought he was way too hard on himself. From descriptions it was obvious he was an attractive man who took care of those he considered his, including Eaton.

This is a story of fated mates, so the storyline progresses quickly. Just when I thought it was going to be this straight forward romance, Ms. Kell throws in a great plot twist that adds a level of suspense and drama that made a good story great.

The characters are well developed and that includes secondary characters. I found myself liking other characters and trying to figure out who they were fated to be with, and if it would be another interesting mix of paranormals. I loved this story because of the characters, the world and the potential I see for many more stories to come. I highly recommend it.

Sometimes love is stronger than death.

Former foster child Gabriel Jacobs is determined to make something of his life. Easygoing and more comfortable in a pair of old sweats than the Brooks Brothers suits he will have to wear when he finishes his law degree, Gabriel is also a naïve romantic looking for love. That turns out to be a problem when the ghost of Adrien Beauchene, the son of a French plantation owner, makes an appearance in the house Gabriel just moved into. Adrien is convinced Gabriel is the reincarnation of his slave turned lover, a man he has spent 160 years waiting for.

Before long, Adrien gains control of Gabriel. He vows not to be parted from his love again, even if that means Gabriel must join him in the spirit world. But Gabriel’s best friend, Scott, won’t give up without a fight. He enlists the help of a gypsy witch and twin warlocks Jaivyn and Jaquan to keep Gabriel safe. As Adrien tightens his grip, Gabriel begins to fade, and Jaivyn grows desperate. He and Gabriel just met—Jaivyn can’t lose him now….

Have you ever read a novel that right after reading the last sentence you pause and try to gather your thoughts because the author took you so far to another place that you have to adjust your mind back to reality? This is what Beyond Love did for me. J.A. Harmon had me totally enraptured in his writing that I am sad the novel had to end.

Increasing age, cheap viagra no prescription stress or work pressure can take a tool on your sex life, leaving you and your partner can start by touching, licking and biting thighs, belly, penis tip and lips.
The author has many great talents. One is creating believable characters such as Gabriel Michael Jacob, who has been in several foster homes during his life and Scott Thomas, who was brought up in a wealthy home, but shunned by his parents when they found out about his sexual preference. Gabriel and Scott have been best friends for years. They attended Ole Miss together and decided to attend law school in New Orleans. Gabriel gets a great deal on a sublet house….that happens to be haunted. Gabriel doesn’t have any ghostly scare tactics that scared him away such as with the prior occupants. In fact, the ghost that haunts the house likes Gabriel, thinking he is his former slave-turned-lover. The ghost only shows jealously when Scott comes around. Scott, being the friend that he is has concern for Gabriel’s well being and he seeks out Natosha, a gypsy palm reader who possesses the gift of sight.

Mr. Harmon’s second talent is building a plot full of humor, suspense, paranormal, historical events and a loving bond that even death can’t break. Gabriel is drawn to the love and affection from the ghost of the house, and he starts to get weak in strength because Adrien Beauchene, the ghost who has been hunting the house for 150 years, is drawing upon Gabriel’s energy.

Natosha is unable to help Gabriel so she contacts the twin supreme warlocks and night club owners, Jaquan and Jaivyn Roumain. All of them commit to breaking the curse that holds Adrien hostage in the house and saving Gabriel from being pulled into the spirit world. In doing so they come upon many past secrets that impact each of them. Again, the plot is so well put together it’s like each character is a piece to a puzzle and the house hunting of Adrien is set in place to get all the parties/pieces involved to fulfill a precognition.

This is a hugely entertaining tale that I wasn’t able to put down. This skillful storytelling is so moving it, I was enthralled from the first page. I am truly glad I had the pleasure of reading such great work and I would hope to read more work from the author in the future.

A true immortal bound by honor to destroy all evil, he not only has to fight to help Nyx discover the woman he believes is still buried deep inside her, he’ll also make decisions that go against his hunter instincts that demand he kill her.

This was book four in Ms. Coi’s Immortal series and was, hands down, my favorite. I’ve loved all of them, each seemingly more than the one before. This one, however, really took hold right from the start. Ms. Coi always does a wonderful job with character development, but she really outdid herself this time with Lyssa/Nyx. The internal struggles of this woman were really palpable. I felt the emotional turmoil and struggles that she felt. I understood her fears, her self-doubt, and even her self-loathing. This wasn’t one of those women who bellyache and whine about themselves to the point that you want to puke. No, I fully got her internal struggles. It made sense and was completely believable. Besides her physical strength—thanks to a friend she met in the Abyss—Lyssa is one of the strongest, most moving characters I’ve read about in a long while.

Gideon’s growth and depth were no less intense. Aside from his good looks and toe-numbing charm, his heart and determination to save Lyssa really struck me hard. I can’t help but sit here thinking, “I want one of those!” Oh, if only guys like Gideon were so easy to find.  A true hero and warrior, he will likely stay in my heart for a long while to come.

A writer myself, I tend to notice editing errors and point-of-view violations—not that I don’t make them myself, I most certainly do—but if there were any, I was so engrossed in this story that I missed them. Nope, no complaints on this end. I would like, however, to take a moment to inform the author that there’s at least one more Immortal who could use a good story, if she hasn’t cooked one up already. After what he’s gone through thus far, I believe Kane needs, no deserves, a tale of his own. No pressure. Really. *grin*

What can I say to accurately summarize my thoughts on this story? It was awesome, plain and simple. I loved it from start to finish. Ms. Coi pens deeply moving characters that stole their way into my soul. The action is heart-pounding, the sex scenes are smoking hot, and her Immortals are true warriors that won my trust, my respect, and my love.

Does Tucker Pierce have what it takes to be a hero when the U.S. military quarantines his island?

Fourteen-year-old Tucker Pierce prefers to fly under the radar. He’s used to navigating around summer tourists in his hometown on idyllic Pemberwick Island, Maine. He’s content to sit on the sidelines as a backup player on the high school football team. And though his best friend Quinn tells him to “go for it,” he’s too chicken to ask Tori Sleeper on a date. There’s always tomorrow, he figures. Then Pemberwick Island is invaded by a mysterious branch of the U.S. military called SYLO. And sitting on the sidelines is no longer an option for Tucker, because tomorrow may never come.

It’s up to Tucker, Quinn, and Tori to uncover the truth about the singing aircraft that appears only at night—and the stranger named Feit who’s pushing a red crystal he calls the Ruby that brings unique powers to all who take it. Tucker and his friends must rescue not just Pemberwick Island, but the fate of the world—and all before tomorrow is too late.

Sylo is a heart-thumping adrenaline rush that totally overwhelms a reader with its scope, suspense and its amazing storytelling voice. I was left wide-eyed and boggled at the end.

I’m not sure where to start. Sylo started off small and innocuous. It was the things the young hero paid attention to that led to his questioning the things around him. It slowly built as things started happening and one piece of the puzzle snapped together with another piece. The whole picture doesn’t become clear until almost the very last page but along the way the author kept me engaged, energized and connected to his characters. There is a definite connection between Tucker, Quinn and Tori; so much so that what happens to them had me gasping, choking up, smiling or worrying on their behalf.

There is death. Sometimes grisly, sometimes mysteriously but no one remains untouched by loss in this story. It’s that grittiness of reality that kept me glued to the book’s pages. Once the book gets started with Tucker and friends having to make some big decisions, I think about the fifth chapter or so, make sure you leave plenty of time for reading. I am glad I did because I didn’t want to stop. I couldn’t. The writing is that intense, focused, clear and very effective. Dialogue was key – nothing was out of place or extraneous. I learned what Tucker learned when he learned it. It gave me that helpless feeling as much as he must have felt helpless at times. There was nothing anyone could do to avert what eventually happened. And to think, someone close to the hero couldn’t be trusted. That hurt. I was so sad for him on his behalf.

I think Tori sort of likes Tucker and that bit of hopefulness is what I hope the author will eventually expand upon. I understand this is the first book in a trilogy and for an opening salvo, Sylo was extremely effective. It ends with the first step accomplished and more questions being raised. The author’s writing is powerful enough to make me, without a doubt, want to find out what happens next, how far the evil plot goes and who truly are the good guys and bad guys. Are they really UFO’s? Where did the technology come from? The mysteries alluded to in this first book are intriguing and a great hook.

The hero is committed to finding out the truth, and I’m committed to reading about his journey. Sylo is a novel filled with incredible storytelling that should not be missed. If a reader is looking for something that reminds them of the old T.V. series, The X-Files, this book will please. If a reader enjoys a book about a teenager that shows promise for the kind of man he’ll become because of what he survives, and I’m not talking acne and bad dates, then this book will amaze. I’m so glad I read it. It blew me away.
