There can be light in the dark…

“Luna,” he said softly, his voice deep and low.

A warm flutter erupted in her belly. “Yes?”

“I’d like to hold your hand.”

The idea appealed to her, sending tingles all through her body. Unfortunately, the act of touching him again also terrified her. It was difficult enough to keep her wolf contained in the cabin of the SUV, where his scent was so strong she couldn’t escape it, without adding skin contact to the mix. When he’d rested his hand on her knee earlier, clothing had remained between them. As he moved to her hand, her body came to life in entirely new ways. That had teased the beast, which was dangerous in itself. Then he’d breezed his lips over her skin, and she thought she was going to lose it. She was already straddling an invisible fence, combating her attraction to him. It didn’t help that when he returned to her and slid her hand under his arm, placing her palm on what felt like a leather jacket as he guided her from her grandparent’s home, she’d gotten an idea of his size and strength.

He was tall, broad, and muscular.

She’d been turned-on immediately.

She thought the beast was going to rip clear out of her skin.

“Tell me what you’re thinking.” He didn’t reach for her. Obviously, he was able to smell her discomfort. Hell, the aroma was so strong it plugged her nose. “There are no right or wrong things to say. Not with me.”

“If you touch me,” she answered, ashamed to admit it, “the wolf will rise.”

“I know.” He didn’t sound disturbed.

“She could hurt you,” she whispered, mortified by the fact.

To her shock, he laughed. “She can try, lovely. But it won’t happen.”

Not wanting to offend him, she considered her words. “You’re sure?”

“There’s only one way to find out.”

“You wanted to bring me here, right? Things will stay like this unless you talk to me.” When he didn’t say anything, she took a chance. She reached out and placed her fingers on his forearm. His head turned, his eyes resting on her hand, then slowly inched up. She met his gaze, determined and unafraid. “I want you to talk to me. I want to understand.” Because she felt like he needed to hear it, she told him, “You don’t know me either, but when you do, you’ll find out you can trust me.”

Slowly, as though pained, he released the steering wheel and rested his hand over hers. She tried to place the look in his eyes. He was a good man. She’d learned that while visiting his parents. They told her he could have moved away a long time ago, going to live with his brother in Tennessee, but decided to build a small house on the opposite side of their property. He lived nearby to watch over them, always ready to make their lives easier, visiting them often to make sure they were taken care of.

He gazed down at their hands, brushed his thumb over her knuckles, and then his golden-brown eyes returned to her face. She wanted to crawl over, climb into his lap, and twine her fingers in his hair.

“We’ll talk in Penny’s,” he said softly.

“Promise?” she asked, hoping she wouldn’t scare him away.

His lips parted, and he almost responded.

Then he looked away and nodded. She wanted to understand the man who’d been on her mind for weeks. She’d been captivated the minute she’d spoken to him. If he was willing to reveal himself, she was more than ready to listen.
