I have a lot of favorite authors, and narrowing down my favorite books for each might be a bit of a trial, so I thought I’d make it a little easier on myself. Since I tend to gravitate to series, I wanted to highlight the first book in my favorite series by my favorite authors.
Michael Connelly – The Black Echo. Bosch Universe. I had a friend rec this series to me years ago and I cannot thank her enough.
Michael Connelly (again) – The Lincoln Lawyer. This is also part of the Bosch Universe, but focuses on Harry’s half-brother, Mickey Haller. I often get a lot of guff for this, but I prefer Mickey to Harry (or Renee Ballard).
Tess Gerritsen – The Surgeon. Rizzoli & Isles. This series is one of the few I got into in reverse. I started watching the series with Angie Harmon and discovered that it had been based on a series of novels. In between seasons, I began binge reading the books. While the show and the series are very different, they are both fantastic.
Kathy Reichs – Deja Dead. Temperance Brennan. Tempe is an interesting character who often does dumb things (she’s forever getting conked on the head), but her relationship with Andrew Ryan is the best.
Dana Stabenow – A Cold Day for Murder. Kate Shugak. Set in Alaska, starring a Native woman, this series is fascinating in all the details you get about native life in Alaska, as well as all the history of the state and the people. Even though I’m angry with the author for something she did about halfway through the series, this is still one of the best out there.
Travis Baldree – Legends and Lattes. Legends and Lattes. I’m pretty sure I discovered this book through TTT and instantly fell in love. Cozy fantasy is something I never knew I needed.
Vivien Chien – Death by Dumpling. Noodle Shop Mysteries. Cozy mysteries are one of my top favorite genres and I read a ton of them. These are some of the best.
Jenn McKinlay – Books Can Be Deceiving. Library Lover’s Mysteries. I love books set in a library and these are particularly fun since the town’s residents are all a little kooky.
Dakota Cassidy – The Accidental Werewolf. Accidentally Paranormal. There is so much I love about this series – the crazy way the characters become paranormal creatures, the humor, Nina. The author is also a pretty great woman, too.
John Scalzi – Constituent Service. Here, I am going to break with my theme since I couldn’t think of a tenth series I read faithfully (it’ll come to me after I post this, I’m sure). However, I do adore John Scalzi – he makes me laugh, he makes me think, and – in When the Moon Hits Your Eye – he even made me cry. While I haven’t read anything of his yet that I haven’t enjoyed, I think his novella, Constituent Service, is one of the best (and most bizarre).
Have you read any of these authors? What did you think?

Huh! I’ve read a lot of Scalzi but hadn’t run across that particular title. Will have to look for it!
I stumbled across it on Audible. I believe there’s also a graphic novel now, too. I hope you enjoy it if you do pick it up.
Good idea! I haven’t read any of these authors. You’ve inspired me to create a similar post! 📚
Awesome, have fun with it! I just knew I couldn’t narrow it down to one book per author, so I figured I’d choose series. Much easier, right?
I’ve only read Deja Dead but it was a long time ago now! I used to really love that series, the early books are great!
I agree, it’s still a good series even though I’m way behind.
I recently discovered Jenn McKinlay and I love her! I’d like to try the Library Lovers Series😁
She’s great and the Library Lovers is probably my favorite of her series.
I want to read the Lincoln Lawyer books, I love the Netflix series!
The series is fantastic! I think you’d enjoy the books – the series does a good job of capturing Mickey’s personality.
Great idea! I’ve only read the first two books in Tess Gerristen’s Martini Club series and I love The Lincoln Lawyer on Netflix.
I really want to start the Martini Club series! Netflix did a great job with the show, too.
Legends and Lattes is so good!
The whole series has been fabulous, but L&L is still #1 for me.
I’m also a Scalzi fan but haven’t read that one. Jenn McKinley and Dakota Cassidy sound like fun, I’ll check them out.
It’s one of the best audiobooks I listened to last year, I hope you enjoy it. Jenn McKinlay has a knack for quirky characters as does Dakota Cassidy. They’re both fun authors.
I love John Scalzi’s books! And the Kate Shugak series is one of my all-time favorites — so great to see it included here!
Man, I almost rage quit the Kate Shugak series after a particular event, but I’m glad I stuck it out. Always liked Chopper Jim. 😀
Good to read your choices. I don’t think I’ve read any of these series!
Thanks, hopefully you found something interesting.
Oh!! All new-to-me! Love that about TTT. My favorite first book in a series would be really hard to come up with but possibly the first Louise Penny Chief Inspector Gamach book. Or… Or… Or..
Hahaha – I know exactly how you feel. Finding my favorites was rough! And I agree, I have found so many new authors and books through TTT!
I haven’t read any of these! Focusing on series is a good idea for this topic.
Thanks, it’s the only way I managed to narrow it down. Have a fantastic week!
Yessss Travis Baldree 😀 Although I admit that I’ve kept Bookshops & Bonedust on my shelf for a minute… I just don’t want the magic to end by actually reading it lol
I have not read any of these, but I also love a good series. Have a good week!
I’ve only read Scalzi’s Starter Villain, which was fun. I have heard of Michael Connelly but haven’t tried anything by him.
Connelly—I maybe read one of the novels, but didn‘t continue. I liked the first season of the TV adaptation.
Gerritsen—I read one Rizoli & Isles and again never continued. I read a good standalone thriller set in space with a contagion?
Reichs—I read several of them 20 years ago and liked them well enough.
Baldree—great cozy fantasy!
Scalzi—Kaiju Preservation Society is a lot of fun! Lock In was great, Head On is sitting on my shelf…
Netflix and Amazon both did a great job in adapting Bosch and Mickey Haller’s books.
Travis Baldree is a gem, I hope he continues writing.
That is one of the few of John Scalzi’s novels I haven’t read yet. It’s on the list though. I’d love to see Head On/Lock In adapted into a series after seeing how well Murderbot was done.
Great list. I love Vivien Chien’s Noodle Shop series. Tess Gerritson is another favorite of mine. It was so hard to narrow the list to only 10.
I know, it was crazy hard! At first, I didn’t think I could find ten, then, I had to narrow my list down!
The Noodle Shop books are great, but I always wind up hungry. I do love Rizzoli & Isles!
I may have to find Death By Dumpling, as another big cozy mystery fan. And I love Bones on TV, but I’ve hesitated to read the books because I’m not sure how graphic they are.
I haven’t read any of these authors, however I would really like to give the Legends and Lattes books by Travis Baldree. 😊
I hope you get to read Legends and Lattes soon – it’s super fun and low-stakes fantasy.
I completely loved Legends and Lattes!
It’s such a fantastic book. I love that the author narrates the audiobook, too!
A great list. I’ve not read them, but I’ve watched and enjoyed The Lincoln Lawyer. I think I have a kindle Freebie of book 1 in the Bosch series.
Have a great week!
Netflix did such a great job with the series! The cast is so good. I’m just sad Bosch got picked up by Amazon and The Lincoln Lawyer by Netflix – in the later books Harry helps Mickey on a few cases and I’d have loved to see Titus and Manu together.
Nice choices! Gotta love Legends & Lattes, it’s such a warm hug of a book.
I haven’t read any of these authors, but Legends and Lattes is one I see loved by so many bloggers.
The only one I’ve read here is Legends and Lattes, but unfortunately I didn’t enjoy it as much as everyone else seems to.
I loved Constituent Service!
I cannot believe I still haven’t read any John Scalzi! I have to remedy that immediately. Thanks for the reminder 🙂
I really enjoyed Death By Dumpling, too! Thanks for stopping by my TTT earlier.
I haven’t read these before but I’m actually going to be reading the graphic novel for Legends and Lattes!
Happy reading!
I haven’t ever read the books but I did enjoy the film The Lincoln Lawyer. 🙂 Thanks so much for visiting my list last week.
