People sometimes need a reason, and a homeless man named Rodney Bridges gave Brenda Harris a reason.

Though a simple read, this book offers a powerful story into the life of a homeless man with a mental illness and a woman with low self-esteem. The two formed a friendship that gave Brenda and Rodney a crutch they both needed. All though not action packed, the story moves quickly as the friendship between the two develops. In the beginning Rodney was hesitant about being close with anyone. He felt he didn’t deserve a normal life and his punishment was to live without. Brenda’s husband left her and she dealt with her depression by eating.

This is the second book that I’ve read by this author and I can say he doesn’t just write a story he writes to deliver a meaning and a message. I enjoy reading his writing style and was also left seeing that all homeless people are just that…people. Everyone has a story and who knows? There might be other Rodneys out there who have a heart and means to be of encouragement to someone.

I enjoyed the strangeness of this new friendship in how it started but also how Brenda felt drawn to Rodney but she didn’t pressure him or take him out of his element. She gave just the right level of help to Rodney. Her kindness to him helped cause his change of heart that he deserves to live and have a life. In turn, Rodney’s words struck a chord in Brenda that made her see her value and worth because she too was not living. An inspiring read that gives hope that a loving friendship can begin by any means between two people in completely different walks of life. The characters were inviting and drew me into the story.

I also enjoyed the friendship because that is what it was: a true friendship. There was nothing romantic between the two, and this made the story so honest and pure. There doesn’t always have to be attraction or sex between a male and female to have an intense bond.

I also enjoyed the surprise ending that brought me to tears. This is a quick uplifting read that I would recommend to readers that want something inspiring with a happy ending.
