Captain Henry Gracechurch has resigned his commission after living through the horrors and waste of war. Recently returned from Spain, he is cajoled by his formidable godmother to make an appearance at one of her famous balls. When he sees a young woman abandoned on the dance floor, honour commands him to save the day. She and her mother hatch a plan for her to wear the dowdiest clothes and hide her immense dowry so no man will look at her.

Henry rescues Beatrice from a difficult situation and they become friends. It could move into something deeper but Beatrice must go against her instincts and hide her secret. To complicate matters there is Lord Fox who has a hidden agenda of his own.

The story moved forward without a hitch. I enjoyed every word and impatiently read until I got to the end and found the resolution. Each time I thought Beatrice had made up her mind, circumstances changed her direction.

This book grabbed my imagination and entertained me from beginning to end. I love regency novels and also fantasy so this book was exactly my type of reading. Regency at its best with a hint of fantasy was enough to keep my nose in the story until I’d read it all.
