Overall Fuzzy has a good life. He loves his family, his friends are amusingly tolerable—mostly, and he enjoys his job. He never hurts for a date. Yep, the ladies seem to love the furry Fuzzy…so why does he feel like he’s missing out on something? And why does a surprise dinner with a strange man hold more interest for him than the flirty, available waitress?
Geoff knows who he is and what he’s after. He’s searching for a big hairy man to wrap around him. He just hasn’t found one that piques his interest…until he is manipulated into having dinner with Fuzzy—definitely not something to complain about. Fuzzy is tall and broad and proclaims to live up to his name. Everything that Geoff wants in a boyfriend. Except, Fuzzy happens to be straight.
When the opportunity arises for Fuzzy to crash at Geoff’s apartment, Geoff works his derriere off to see what other things can arise. And prays that he can capture his Fuzzy Wuzzy all for himself.
To quote the A-Team’s Hannibal Smith “Don’t you just love it when a plan comes together?” I know Geoff and Fuzzy sure do! Wait, the hero’s name is Fuzzy? Like the bear? Yes, yes it is – but don’t you dare finish that rhyme! Fuzzy’s a sweetheart but he’s no push over.
Actually, Fuzzy isn’t even his real name but it is appropriate on a couple of different levels. His real name is…wait for it…nah, I’m not going to give it away. If you’ve read this author’s stories before you know she’s witty and clever. There are parts of this book that made me laugh for no other reason than because I can only imagine how much fun she had writing this last story. At first I couldn’t reconcile a hero named Fuzzy but as I got to know him better, it’s actually perfect, he is after-all, to Geoff’s great delight, a bear.
Speaking of Geoff, he’s a great match for Fuzzy because he appreciates the qualities in Fuzzy that other’s who “know” him often overlook, even Fuzzy’s boss Emery. In this terrifically crafted triangle, Geoff is Ritchie’s assistant and for all of 10 minutes, his date. You can see how Emery and Ritchie’s story plays out in Emery’s Ritches and that’s also where I first met both Geoff and Fuzzy. Geoff’s Teddy picks up where they first meet one another at a steakhouse near Geoff’s apartment. Ms. Fellows created a stream of circumstances where by which Fuzzy ends up at Geoff’s place for the night. I could tell from their initial conversation at the restaurant that they were going to fun to watch.
Geoff is gay. He doesn’t try to hide it from anyone, not even Fuzzy, who he isn’t sure is even bi-curious, much less gay. At the same time, he doesn’t try to force anything on Fuzzy, which would be kind of funny considering their size difference. Fuzzy tells him more than once that he could pound him into the ground if he wanted to. He calls Geoff “lil man” and it comes off as such a sweet endearment I couldn’t help but smile when he says it.
While I enjoyed the beginning of the story a lot, it was how Geoff and Fuzzy went from having some lovely chemistry into a full blown relationship that’s the real meat of this novella. As I said, Fuzzy isn’t a push-over, not to his parents (who are actually pretty fun) or his co-workers. His relationship with Geoff is very natural feeling in that there are obstacles along the way and a lack of communication never fails to cause issues. It’s the characters attitudes and resolve that make the difference and made this a truly enjoyable read.
Writers amaze me with their ability to create multiple story arcs that play out over a series of books and draw them together into a seamless creation. I’m always a little leery of picking up a new series if I know going in the author attempted synchronicity. If done well, you end up with a beautiful picture, full of life that flows from one POV to another telling a complete tale. There’s a sense of completeness when you close the last page. On the other hand, if done poorly, the effect may be more like Jackson Polluck’s surrealism art than Michelangelo’s pictorial Sistene Chapel.
So where does author Havan Fellows’ Synchronous Seductions series fall? After having read all three novellas, most certainly she has done well. The series name describes the flow of this triad of short stories to a tee. Beginning with Harlan’s Ryde, to Emery’s Riches and finishing with Geoff’s Teddy, I have honestly enjoyed her writing and look forward to seeing where she goes from here. If you’re looking for an up and coming new writer, Ms. Fellows is one to follow.
