“Seduction is a game that cannot be played without worthwhile opponents. It is fun. It is challenging. And it is victory.”

Bryne is the ranking Coquet of Slate Pleasure House and his Mistress’s current favorite. But after escaping a hellish childhood to reach the top, Bryne has yet to find anyone who can play the game of seduction well. Leaving the Pleasure House to live with his brother, Phyre, who contracted with the Second Lord of Nyph, Bryne finds himself playing against the consummate Slate, Raith. But Bryne is still haunted by the past, and he can’t seem to understand that Raith is playing a different game… a game Bryne might lose before he realizes how important winning is to his future.

How do you unlearn years of emotional abuse? How do you overcome the shortcomings of your past? How do you surrender? Did I give you the shivers? I gave myself the shivers. Those questions are some deep questions. But don’t worry. Read And It Is Victory and you’ll get the answers. I did.

K.R. Foster writes with a fluidity that I couldn’t help but keep reading. There were times when I didn’t want to continue the story because the characters infuriated me, but Ms. Foster’s way with words kept me right in my seat. This isn’t a very long story, so immersion in Bryne and Raith’s world was a little difficult, but it didn’t take away from my reading enjoyment.

Bryne is a darned complex man. He’s a coquet at the Slate Pleasure House and as such, he knows he’s hot. Pairing with him is a game—he uses and the person being used gets off. I have to say there was more than one time when I wanted to bop him on the head. He’s bullheaded and won’t change his thought processes. Now understand, he’s been damaged badly. Trust and love aren’t his friends. Seeing him grow and evolve in the story was a great thing.

Then there’s Raith. He’s the chosen one. A legend in the household. And what’s worse (and it makes the story so much richer) he’s not at all affected by Bryne’s sex appeal. I think that was my favorite point. Both characters have moments of aching sadness. While some aren’t as well-described as others, I totally felt them. After I closed the book, I was thinking about Raith and Bryne. That’s heady stuff.

If you want a book that’s heavy on emotions, then you need to read And It Is Victory. You won’t regret it. 4 cherries.
