Thoughts on Critique Groups

I was asked to talk about my take on critique groups and I have been in many different groups. One thing I have noticed is if you’re in a critique group that you often find yourself tailoring your work to the liking of the group. I first noticed this in college where my creative writing classes had us switch up our groups during the semesters. I noticed if I was in a group that appreciated humor that I tended to focus more on that and, if I ended up in a group that was more into drama, then my work reflected that as well.

I was in another group for a year with a lot of sci-fi and fantasy authors who were very focused on going through motions in scenes to make sure everything was believable. While this is important (and has set me on a path of going to my book settings to walk the paths my characters walk), it also wasn’t something I needed to do as in depth as a contemporary YA writer who writes romances. Although for their scenes it was crucial to act out the scenes, for my work it didn’t seem to be as necessary.

In another critique group I found some of the men were questioning a female character’s reasons for a breakup. This led me to rework a scene to explain why she broke up with the character seeing as all the males in my group felt for the guy she broke up with. While it was important for me to show more of the reason for the breakup, later I heard from editors that it delayed the story and wasn’t necessary. That made me realize I had rewritten the story to please those members, but in reality, it dragged the story down.

The main thing I learned from critique groups is to always listen to all the feedback, but to take a few days to mull over the comments to see if this is something you needed to consider. Sometimes the advice might be just what you needed or at least something to consider. But I’ve also learned the importance of writing for my intended audience and not just the critique group members. It’s important to keep the integrity of the story no matter.

I started to feel anxious after lunch. After all, I had been an Andrew fan for a long time, and even though I had seen him in person, this was a huge deal to get to meet him. What if he wasn’t what I had imagined? I didn’t expect him to fawn over me or anything, but what if he was rude or ignored me? It would kill my fantasy of him as being this sweet, quiet, sensitive songwriter who wore his heart on his sleeve while also being kind of a loner/rebel with just a touch of bad boy in him. Oh man, I would be crushed if he didn’t notice me or worse—if he ended up flirting with Harlow.

In all his magazine interviews Andrew always said looks weren’t important to him, and what he noticed in a girl was if she was true to herself. He said he went for “bright girls who were sweet and easy to be with.” Now that I thought about it, that was the kind of fake crap magazines put out about all the teen celebrities. It was like when I saw Lawrence Claibourne, my favorite actor who claimed to be Mr. I’m-just-looking-for-a-sweetgirl-to-read-poetry-to on a red carpet with a model whose boobs were falling out of her dress and had overdone the lip fillers—I mean, you just knew he wasn’t into her for her personality. But Andrew wasn’t like Lawrence. Andrew seemed so sincere and deep. Lawrence had a smirk and you could tell he was a player, but Andrew seemed like he had been hurt and needed to find the right girl who he could open up to and learn to trust again. . .or at least that’s what he said in his last interview.

The final bell rang and my heart shot up to my throat. This was it. I was on my way to meet my crush. From now on, any dreams of him would be marred by the reality I was about to face.

Was it better to keep wondering what if and keep the fantasy alive or to go and actually meet him?

When undertaker brothers Corran and Rigan Valmonde became outlaw monster hunters and fled beyond the walls of Ravenwood, they thought they had defeated the source of the abominations that killed so many of their friends and loved ones. But the more successful they become at destroying the creatures, the more they realize a greater evil is at work – larger and more monstrous than they ever could imagine…

“DUCK!”

A chair sailed through the air, thrown by unseen hands. Rigan Valmonde shouted the warning to his brother Corran and dropped to the floor seconds before the chair slammed into the wall behind him hard enough to splinter into pieces.

Setting a child’s vengeful ghost to rest hadn’t sounded like a difficult job when Corran and Rigan took on the task from the village elders. The reality turned out to be far different from what they had been led to expect.

“Finish the banishing circle before she kills us!” Corran climbed to his feet after the angry ghost had thrown him across the room. His iron knife might be able to disrupt the ghost if he could see the spirit to know where to strike.

“Great idea——why didn’t I think of that?” Rigan replied, sarcasm thick in his voice. “Trying not to die right now.” He reached toward the container of salt, aconite, and amanita powder to lay down a protective circle for the banishment, but the spirit materialized just long enough to hurl the container to the far side of the small cabin before he could grab it.

“At least we know for sure that she’s got enough strength to be behind the murders.” Corran dove for the salt mixture, only to see it skid along the wall as if the vengeful spirit were baiting him.

“Yeah, but why?” Rigan got to his knees and brushed the splinters out of his dark hair.

Told in five parts, this novel unravels the challenges between two unlikely Nisei friends, Jim and Russell, into adulthood during the Second World War. As restrictions are imposed, (even in the safe, rural community of Bainbridge Island,) as harassments escalate, (including the F.B.I. invading their homes and deporting their fathers to Montana for espionage trials,) the fated day arrives: evacuation of all Japanese civilians. Rounded up like cattle, tagged, they are hauled to the fringes of Death Valley: Manzanar. Together they must survive racism, gang violence, and the harsh elements of the environment. Together they must prove their loyalty, especially after a tragic riot on the eve of Pearl Harbor’s anniversary. While Russell enlists in a segregated army, becoming part of one the most decorated units in U.S. history, Jim is sent to a different camp for the “No-No” boys: those who are marked disloyal. Removed from their families, they are forced to reevaluate their identities and discover, most importantly, what it means to forgive.

Russell hit the ground, pushing the bottom wire up. Naomi rolled under. He turned to look behind. Tomiko spun around and ran back to the shed.

Horrified, Russell hollered, “What are you doing?”

Naomi grabbed his neck and collar, yanking him forward. His arm snagged on the wire, ripping his favorite sweatshirt. “Guard!” she panted.

Panicking, he fumbled to his feet, scuffling away from the fence. Naomi snatched his hand, pulling, running. He darted across, but tripped and fell near the edge of one of the barracks. For a second, he thought he felt a bullet stab inside his ribs. He looked up. An internal police officer stood in front of him. Blinking and refocusing, he realized the officer was his brother-in-law, Osamu. He carried a flashlight and wore a white patch on his left arm that had “POLICE” painted in black. Dressed in jeans and a brown, corduroy coat, he frowned at Russell and Naomi.

“If I didn’t know any better,” Osamu firmly remarked, “I’d think you two were up to no good.” Crossing his arms and leaning to one side, he maintained, “Care to tell me why the both of you are out of breath?” They didn’t respond. A guilty expression smeared on their faces. “I didn’t think so.” He then peered past the fence to investigate the shed. Russell finally rose, still holding Naomi’s hand. They kept their eyes to the ground. Returning his attention to them, Osamu stated, “You two need to stay clear of the fence. I really don’t want to know what you were doing. Kiotsukete, kudasai. This is a warning. Next time I may not be so nice, Russell. Don’t make me have another conversation with your mother.”

Stunned, Russell and Naomi blinked. They couldn’t leave their friends behind.

“Scat!” he ordered.

Naomi tugged on Russell’s arm, quickly walking away. Panic and guilt drilled inside his chest. He couldn’t believe it. He couldn’t abandon them just like that. Without food or water. Without toiletry. For how long? Until it got dark? Until the camp fell into a deep sleep? What if one of them got bit by a rattler or stung by a scorpion? How could he help his friends? What were Jim and Tomiko going to do for the next eighteen hours?

Once, there was a truce. Desperaux controlled the west with magic, and Desire claimed the east with steel and science.

But now magic has disappeared, and the world has changed.

The kingdom of Desire will stop at nothing to maintain the new world order. On Juno’s wedding day, their Mengery soldiers came marching through the Nine desert to rip his world apart. Now he journeys east with his adopted brother, Trey, in search of revenge after the murder of his family. Along the way, the two face bandits and the magical creatures of the Nine. When they finally reach Desire, Juno and Trey will face something even deadlier – their own fears and ambitions.

This is a tale of brotherhood, a revenge story that will remind you that everything has a cost – a cost that will be paid to Desire and to the inner demons that govern us all.

Enjoy an Excerpt:

Trey and Juno had found a shack to rest for a few hours, but when they woke Juno realized what a grave mistake they’d made. The shack was a cursed place, he said. Trey scoffed, but Juno had been learning from a monk in Nox and said he could smell it in the air – like sour milk. Fear gripped his shoulders, turning him into a statue. Unable to act. Paralyzed. Like he had been on his wedding day, Trey thought. Perhaps Drea would still be alive if he had done something. The frustration drew bile in Trey’s throat.

Though Trey didn’t believe in curses, he knew something was off about the town. Desperate for sleep, he hadn’t noticed it when he snuck into the shack. Now, though, he saw the abandoned saloon with its worm-eaten wood. They were all alone. Stepping outside the shack, the two watched as the sun rose and drew close to them. Dzoavits stood several yards from the door of the shack. The demon’s muscular body reflected sunlight, and when he brought his hands above his head, his triceps bulged to the size of watermelons. When the sun drew close enough to Dzoavits’s hands that he could seize it, the demon swallowed it whole. With that, the Nine was plunged into darkness and a chill running through Juno’s back compelled him to retreat to the shack and abandon Trey. From the uncovered roof of the shack, Juno watched Rangda approach Trey and extend a tongue that was over a foot long. Trey tried drawing his laser pistol out to shoot it off, but Andhaka jumped down from the shack and grabbed him, holding him still.

Why I Write About Vampires by Catherine Russell – Guest Blog and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. One randomly chosen winner via rafflecopter will win a $50 Amazon/BN.com gift card. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Why I write about Vampires…The only genre there is (at least in my mind)

Since I was a young girl, I can remember sitting upon my bed, in the darkness of night (when I should’ve been well asleep already) and dreaming of what it would be like to walk through the night with no fears, to see into the abyss of blackness and to embrace all that it would have to offer. The life of a nightwalker…yeah, that’s what I dreamt of as a little girl, not cooking in Easy-Bake ovens, riding horses, or playing house with Ken and Barbie dolls.

My dream world was that of the darkest nocturnal creatures known to man. Hence the obsession was born. One of the earliest vampire movies I can recall watching, completely enthralled was Dracula in 1979, starring Frank Langella.

In the early twentieth century, when moving pictures were still in its infancy, the Nosferatu was the first born of many dark princes of the night. Hundreds, maybe thousands of reincarnations of the creature would be born over the decades, well into the twenty-first century.

From those first black and white stuttering film slides of grotesque creatures with pale, bluish skin, bald head and elongated teeth, dripping with red food coloring, avoiding sun light at all cost to the more recent invention of sparkling day walking vampires of the Pacific Northwest, I’ve devoured all of them. The sci-fi space alien vampires to the African American versions, and let us not forget the Bon Temps of New Orleans vampires of Tru Blood HBO fame, good ol’ Vampire Bill, all these have fed my obsession, my research, my passion in creating my own world of blood thirsty vampires.

Most early movies and even series portrayed my beloved vampires as evil doers, of predators who preyed on the weak, the small, and elderly. The public view was contoured to seeing them as pest, as devils, as the darkest of evil in a human’s soul. However, somehow, I was shielded against such perception, viewing these night creatures as always human, who sometime made bad decisions, wrong choices and even deserved to find and be loved. They tried their best to be who they were in their hearts but who just happened to need one little element to remain alive, their addiction needed feeding, blood. Well, my folks have always found ways to co-exists with their mortal cousins, who have for obvious reason a much shorter life span than their unique relatives. We’re all human, regardless of our life’s length. We all make bad choices. There’s always the preverbal rotten apple in the barrel to make the rest look bad, yet we all want to get along.

In the end…we’re all human at some point in our lives. Some of us just have a really cool mutation, we’re the special ones. And we’re in every aspect of life, living right next door, leading our lives, working our jobs and paying taxes just like Joe Smith across the street.

Yes, this is the world I see, where we all get along, mortal and immortal. This is the world I’ve created from my obsession, my passion, my love of the immortal beings that were first born well over centuries ago.

An image of Dawn’s mangled, bloody body filled my thoughts, and I stopped sorting through my art supplies. It had happened just before Christmas. There was poor Dawn, distraught over her break-up with Ian, wearing my jack, and waiting in Geoffrey’s car in the alley behind The Stage.

They thought Dawn was me.

They- The Inner Circle, Geoffrey’s first coven-wanted him back.

Marco, his sire, was the head honcho there, and I its prime the coven had been quite large with a very strong presence in the community. As the years passed, it prominence had faded, but Marco still clung to his power. Geoffrey said that the older Marco got the more manipulative, abusive, and obsessive he became. It didn’t make sense. Marco had exiled him, and now he wanted his prized son back, even though Geoffrey’s twin, Alexander, was part of the Inner Circle. To top it off, they wanted me dead. Why? Because I came between Marco and Geoffrey? Was it because of the Link?

Shh, my love, said Geoffrey’s sweet, cool voice though the Link.

But I couldn’t keep my thoughts from whirling. Nerdy Chase Montgomery, my neighbor, was Geoffrey’s Guardian- a scholar of immortals, more or less. He was assigned to watch over Geoffrey, but he had trouble staying close to him. So he had followed me instead, filling my apartment with micro-cameras and audio pickups. When Geoffrey finally confronted Chase, I got a look inside his apartment-and at his computer screens. Nearly every inch of my apartment was under surveillance.

How fast everything had happened! Only four months ago, I started working at Ashleigh’s bar, The Stage, which was now the hottest club in Seattle. Geoffrey and his family which made up his band, The Darkness, were the house band there, and he and his family lived what they jokingly called an “alternative lifestyle”- even for vampires. Believing our human lives were too short as it is, they found other sources for their drug of choice, blood.

By the way, did I say reality bites? Yeah it does. I guess that comes with the territory when the one you love is a vampire.

Balancing Life & Writing by Christine Grabowski

One of the biggest challenges for me as an author has been balancing writing with the rest of my life. (And I thought I was busy before I began writing creatively.) Everyone believes writing is the perfect job for someone staying at home to take care of a family. And it is…if you can learn to turn off the writing. For me, turning it off has been a work in progress.

I began to write consistently a little over four years ago. For most of the first year, I treated it as a hobby, and it was easy to write or not write. But when I began to get more serious, writing began to take over more and more of my life. Since I have a lot of household responsibilities, I can only fit in so many hours at the computer while the kids are at school, so it began to bleed into (and often overtakes) weekends and evenings. Meanwhile my kids were getting more and more independent, so it was easy to let this change happen. But finally, this past summer, I felt it went too far. As I prepared for the launch of Dickensen Academy, I felt I truly didn’t have a summer and barely spent any quality time with my family, except when I completely disconnected on vacations. At the end of the summer I told myself if I wanted to continue writing (which I do), I need to come up with a better way.

Going forward, I am attempting to stick to a writing schedule. For me, this varies day to day. But each day I set writing goals whether they be number of words, hours writing, or tasked completed. Once I have finished with them, I make sure to get caught up on some of the household chores that have fallen by the wayside (e.g. overflowing pantry and random messy areas that have been ignored for too long) without feeling guilty that I am not writing.

I am also closing my laptop when the kids come home until they immerse themselves in their own activities. The same goes for the weekend. I’m now putting the dog walk with my husband ahead of the writing. Although I still write during the weekend and evening hours, I want my family to know they come first.

I wouldn’t say I have mastered the writing/life balance, but at least now, I recognize my pitfalls, and I am making a concerted effort to get there.

Dickensen Academy isn’t a typical boarding school. The faculty is hiding an unbelievable secret within their fine arts program. When Autumn Mattison receives an invitation to attend the high school, she yearns to escape her overbearing father yet remains reluctant to leave her mother and brother. Her doubts fade away when a vivid dream convinces her she belongs there.

Away from home, Autumn discovers a unique school environment that awakens her creative potential, and her new friends become like a second family. However, as she uncovers more about the dark side of the school and struggles with its curriculum, she questions whether Dickensen Academy is truly where she belongs.

When tragedy strikes, Autumn must learn to believe in her own power and stand up to her greatest fear or risk having her memories destroyed to protect the school’s secrets. Caught between secrets and dreams, can she find her true self?

“I feel like there’s something big we don’t know about. Something those students were protecting. I mean, really, why are we here?”

I thought it was just me who was confused. “Well…the recruiters said we’re creative and focused.”

“Yeah, that’s what Principal Locke said too.”

“And we have the right personality.”

Ben looked up at the sky, sighed then turned toward the forest. “What did he say…something about how it will soon become clear why we’re here, and there’s some ultimate purpose for our creativity?”

“I know. That whole creativity part was a bit bizarre.”

He shrugged. “It seems everyone is going with the flow. But I have so many questions.” Then he touched my arm to stop me, so I turned toward him. “I’m thinking they’re isolating us for some special reason,” he admitted in an embarrassed tone.

I tried not to laugh—he was acting paranoid. But I didn’t know Ben well. Maybe he was joking, trying to freak me out. Or was he hitting on me? The flutter in my chest moved to my stomach. I was already anxious about being away from home and whether or not I could hack the academics. I didn’t need to obsess about anything else. But I still had to know about Ben’s dream.

“So…I also had a dream about Dickensen before I accepted the offer.”

Ben’s head snapped toward me. “You did?”

So this is your room?”

I nodded, hiking my backpack higher on my shoulder. I leaned up against the doorjamb, watching all the people running up and down the corridor as they settled into the hotel for the night.

Mack leaned against the wall, glanced at his phone and tried to stifle a sigh. “Tired?” I asked.

“Incredibly,” he said sheepishly.

“Why didn’t you take a nap this afternoon?” I asked.

“Because…I wanted to talk to you.”

I smiled. Mack wore his heart on his sleeve. He was a straight shooter and I admired that about him. You couldn’t dislike him either. “That’s sweet,” I said.

“Yeah,” he said and looked into my eyes. I met his gaze, not wanting to break the magic of this moment. “Um, was…would you like to, you know, see more of each other while you are on tour with us?”

A pit started in my stomach. I wasn’t sure what I was most scared of. I was scared that Mack would hurt me emotionally. I was scared of leaving him behind after the tour was done. Or him using me and leaving me behind.

But most of all I was scared of falling for him. Scratch that. I had already fallen hard.

“Yeah, I’d like that,” I said.

He leaned into me and I met him halfway.

God, he was a good kisser.

Sure enough, Peters insisted that the small caravan camp for the night on a field just inside the border of Lord Nemic’s lands.

“It’s still early,” Harrtuck argued. “We could travel another hour, be that much closer to the manor, and arrive before noon.”

“It will do no good for us to arrive exhausted,” Peters sniffed. “We are performers. We must be sufficiently rested. Lord Eston’s orders were clear. We are to provide an excellent performance for Lord Nemic, as befits a gift of this magnitude. We will not drag in like peddlers, half-asleep and unable to give our best showing.”

“We were hired to defend you,” Harrtuck snapped. “And as your guards, I need to warn you that this position is once again too close to the trees and difficult to defend.”

“Deal with it,” Peters replied, eyes narrowing. “We are camping here.”

This time, Harrtuck did not attempt to hide his muttered curses as he stalked away. “Either that man is incredibly stupid, or he wants to be attacked,” he mumbled to Jonmarc when he had returned to where the rest of the War Dogs waited with their horses.

Jonmarc raised an eyebrow. “I’m not questioning his stupidity, but maybe he does want to be attacked—there’s something about this whole thing we don’t know, a piece we’re missing.”

Harrtuck nodded. “Aye. But I can’t figure out what it is.”

A small crowd was gathered on the edge of my lawn. Neighbors hollered so loud that I couldn’t even hear myself think. A wall of hickory trees covered in a new dusting of snow stood above us caught our noise, bounded it around and threw the sounds back down. The strange vibration of our voices echoed in my ears.

“Calista! Really! Chasing an old man with a dough roller in the middle of the night! You should be ashamed,” chastised Alma Douglas. Her blue curlers peeked out from beneath a large sateen scarf infested with brightly colored butterflies. Her thin pink cotton robe barely closed over her ample bosom. Her feet were thick, feet were shoved into a pair of matted blue slippers.

“Ashamed?” I snorted. “I found him in my house! What woman runs out of her home in the middle of the night screaming, if nothing is wrong?”

“He’s harmless,” Mr. Landy gagged back a chuckle. “Wouldn’t hurt a fly.” Then leaned forward and whispered, “The lights are on, but no one’s inside.” He whistled and made circles around his head. “You know what I mean, right?” Meager strands of gray hair had escaped hair band and whipped around the balding halo of his scalp.

The subject of our discussion was my elderly neighbor, Fred Guthrie. The man was stooped with a slight hump in his back. I had been living next door to him for a few months but had only seen him a hand-full of times. Shuffling his feet back-and-forth, he was oblivious to the argument surrounding him. The man was thin. A good wind could have knocked him over. Standing between us, Fred Guthrie was immune to my argument. His yellow, rummy eyes were downcast. Blue veined hands quivered at his side as he hummed faintly.

What are you working on now? Any chance of a sequel?

I just finished National Novel Writing Month, and I ended up with a rough draft for the next story in my Sleight of Hand series, Magic at Sea. It will be the seventh in the series, and it was a lot of fun to write, so I’m fairly certain I’ll continue this series. I’d like to write another standalone, and I have a couple of half-formed ideas, so those will be in the works. Also, I’m hoping to publish the final book of my Synchronicity trilogy, Timeless, in March. Unfortunately—or fortunately—I also have an inkling of a fourth book in that series, which was never supposed to go further than three books. So we’ll see what happens.

Out of all the books you’ve written, do you have a favorite?

That’s hard because I always think my most recent work is better than all the others from a technical standpoint. I do believe my writing improves with each one, and I know my bookmaking skills have improved. However, I think if I had to pick a favorite, I’d probably choose Ducks in a Row. It’s not a true romance, but it has a depth some of my others don’t have. It actually got my favorite review ever, too, which read, in part: “I highly recommend this unsettling book.” It definitely has my favorite character ever in it, a sort of anti-hero who I loved so much, I had to write a sequel just so he could have his happily ever after.

If someone is brand new to your work, what book do you think they should start with?

Ducks would be a good place to start, just to see if you like my writing. And it has a sequel, Saturday Love (my favorite title), so if you don’t totally know if you like my writing, you can pick up that one without making too heavy a commitment.

Does writing energize or exhaust you?

Both, honestly. But mostly energize. If I had to choose any activity to do for the rest of my life, I’d choose writing, because even when it exhausts me, I have a real feeling of accomplishment, of having created something. I’ve heard some writers say they hate writing because they’d rather be doing something fun, but I have never felt that way. I love writing. Even when it’s hard.

What are common traps for aspiring writers?

I can only speak to the ones I worked through, really. I started out thinking the only respectable way to publish was to get an agent and wait for a traditional publisher to decide you’re worthy. This is certainly one way, but it’s not the only way. Self-publishing is worthwhile, inexpensive and much faster—or at least self-paced. I’ve worked with traditional publishers. It’s wonderful having a real editor to pick your work apart for you and make you think about it in a different way. On the other hand, a good beta reader can do that, too. I’ve never had an agent because my query letters suck, and I haven’t been willing to put in the work to make them catchy. I’d rather put that time into writing something real.

What other authors are you friends with, and how do they help you become a better writer?

I started out with a group of writers at Zoetrope.com, writing flash fiction and short stories. I consider all those guys—many of whom are much more successfully published than I am—friends. What the heck, I’ll namedrop a few: Ellen Meister, Myfanwy Collins, Susan Henderson, Sandra Novack, Lisa McMann, A.J. Brown and so many others. They’ve all helped me out with beta reads and reviews. Locally, I’m starting to get to know some really great writers like Joey Jones (Field of Fireflies) and Leslie Tall Manning (Upside Down in a Laura Ingalls Town). We’re hoping to start a group to help each other with marketing. And most helpfully, I’ve gotten to know Arjay Lewis, who in addition to being a very talented writer is also a magician and has helped me with the magic tricks I put in my Sleight of Hand series.

If you could tell your younger writing self anything, what would it be?

Be patient and learn to market. Because no matter whether you’re traditionally or self-published, you’re going to need to market your own stuff. Publishers only market their very top sellers, and even that is limited. You’re not going to get a 40-city book tour with your first book…probably.

If you didn’t write, what would you do for work?

I’d be a librarian. I’ve always loved books, and my house is full of them. I actually have my graduate degree in library science, and other than in my own office, I’m happiest when I’m in a library working with books. My dream is to someday own a bookstore and have an office in it to write.

What is the most difficult part of your artistic process?

Making time for other non-writing things. Like grocery shopping and paying bills. Sometimes I get so frustrated with the outside world wanting to take chomps and bites out of my writing time. I’m notorious for forgetting mundane things like renewing my license plate because I hate taking the time to get my car inspected.

Does your family support your career as a writer?

My family is wonderful. I have an office just off the living room, so they get to hear the tap-tap of my keyboard a lot while they’re watching television. Nobody ever complains. My husband has been very supportive and tries to help me find new ways of marketing my work. My kids have grown up with my obsession, so they know when mom’s writing, dinner might be a little late, but it’ll get there!

She reached for a handful of popcorn and her hand brushed his. When she turned her head and met the gaze of the same pair of clear blue eyes as those on the screen, her heart skipped a beat and she froze. For an eternity of a half second, neither of them moved, then he slowly turned his hand over and folded his fingers over hers. “Is this okay?”

“Yes.” She breathed the single word, then added, “And no.”

“No?” He raised his eyebrows.

“I really want some popcorn.”

“And I still really want to kiss you.” His eyes flickered down to her lips. Then he sighed and released her hand. “I guess one of us should get what they want, huh?”
