Around eleven o’clock, Holly’s mom realized she had forgotten her camera, so Holly volunteered to get it from her car. She pulled a winter jacket over her red party dress, hurried downstairs, and stepped outside.

She was almost to the sidewalk when a deep voice stopped her.

“Hey.”

She spun quickly, her heart racing. The last time someone had done that do her, she’d nearly been attacked.

Declan was leaning against the wall, wearing nothing but jeans, boots, and a snug black sweater. No coat despite the cold night. He held a cigarette between his long fingers. She had made it clear on the night she’d hired him that there was no smoking inside the building. He had always obeyed that rule and gone outside, but she couldn’t help being concerned whenever she saw him smoke.

“What’s going on?” he continued. “Are you running away from your own party?”

“Just getting my mom’s camera from her car.”

He straightened and approached, taking a drag from the cigarette. “I’ll go with you.”

“She’s parked just down the street. I don’t need a chaperone.”

“Humor me, okay? What if Sasquatch is still hanging out around here? Your legs in that dress and heels are enough to drive a sane man crazy,” he said, and then his expression froze. “Shit. That’s not appropriate from maintenance guy to boss. I’m not coming on to you or anything like that.”

Now Holly’s pulse was really pounding. Trying to look nonchalant, she shrugged and said, “I’m not offended.”

“Good.”

“The car is this way.” She started walking, and he fell into step beside her.

Walking beside him like this, with her in delicate heels and a party dress, and him so uncommonly masculine, made her tingle all over. Again she wished they were more than employer and employee.

“You know you shouldn’t smoke,” she remarked. “It’s bad for your health.”

“Why do you care?”

“Why do you care if I walk out here alone at night?”

He raised his eyes to heaven. “Okay. You got me. You’re the one who said I’m not only an employee, I’m a friend.”

“Then that’s why I care.”

She paused at her mother’s car, unlocked it, and removed the camera from the glove compartment. On their way back to the building, she noticed that he still had the cigarette.

“I still don’t understand how a man who runs miles every morning before breakfast smokes cigarettes. But, if you don’t care about your health, there are other reasons you shouldn’t smoke,” she continued.

He narrowed his dark, slanted eyes at her. “Like?”

“Like how do you expect a woman to kiss you if you taste and smell like an ashtray?”

He laughed, shocking the hell out of her. In the entire two weeks he’d been working for her, she had never heard him laugh.

“It’s true,” she said.

“All right. You probably have a point.” He finally dropped the cigarette and crushed it under his boot.

“You’re littering now?”

“Oh, Holly, more than your legs can drive a man crazy.”

“We started off on the wrong foot and I want to correct that.” Saul kissed my knuckles.

The touch of his lips sent a shock wave through my body. Hoo boy! He had chemistry in spades.

“How did you plan on doing that?”

“I’m going to show you how a real man treats his woman.”

His woman? I narrowed my eyes at him. “I’m not your woman.”

“You will be.”

“Wanna bet?” I tried to free my hand.

Saul simply tightened his grip and drew me closer. “One kiss and your panties will be wet.”

“Not happening.”

“I love a challenge.” His mouth closed over mine in a sensual kiss that stole my breath and addled my senses. My girly parts were jumping up and down in glee. More. More.

Casey cleared her throat. “Ah, Uncle Saul, the Overlord is heading our way.”

Saul lifted his head and for a moment I mourned the loss of his very talented mouth. “We will continue this later.”

“Can’t wait.” I used sarcasm to cover my arousal.

Saul smiled and whispered in my ear, “Your panties are wet, darlin’.”

“You wish.”

“I know.” Saul released me and walked over to greet the Overlord.

You don’t understand. My pet parakeet is in the tree. I’ve just got to get him down.” Like I said, not a clue. “I’m sorry ma’am but we don’t get birds out of trees.” The woman then cried, “But… What about my husband? He’s smart and funny as he ever was, and a forest-fire sized attraction burns between them.

Donald never understood his old friend’s driving need to leave Willow Springs. He loves everything about it. When he learns the truth about Stephanie’s project, and how it will turn his hometown into a theme-park version of itself, will it extinguish the flame that has sparked between them?

It was much darker on this side of the building, without the bright, neon lights around the entrance, and even though they could hear the muffled music through the wall, it felt as though they were all alone in the world. Donald stopped and turned to face her, which placed her between him and the building. He cupped her face in his hands, and Stephanie marveled that she’d never noticed how big his hands were before. He leaned down a little and studied her face. His eyes seemed to be searching for a clue as to what she wanted. There were complications aplenty––putting their lifelong friendship at risk, and her work here in town, which Donald still didn’t know the extent of, being two major hurdles, but Stephanie knew what she wanted right now. She knew it from the bottom of her toes to the top of her head, with a certainty she’d never experienced before. Her blood pounded in her veins, and she felt a little breathless with excitement about the step they were about to take.

“Hurry up and kiss me, Flanagan, before I spontaneously combust.”

One side of the mouth she longed to be kissing quirked up in a sexy half-grin. “There’s no turning back if we take this step, Williams. Are you sure?”

The sparks between them light up the uninhabited darkness, because survival in the mountains isn’t his only talent. He knows exactly how to touch her in ways that make her burn.

“You look like a mountain nymph who took a dip in the stream with that blonde hair all wild and your”—he swallowed—”clothes all plastered to your skin. Stunning.”

He caressed my hair, running his hand through the strands just over my ear.
My breath caught again, my heart picking up speed. I didn’t feel stunning—stunningly stupid maybe—standing half-naked and wet in his jacket, my hair drying into a long, frizzy mangle. I let out a nervous laugh. “What could possibly be stunning?”

“Your lips. You have luscious lips. They’re pouty, almost swollen, like you’ve been kissed.” He ran one finger lightly over my bottom lip, a touch so feathery it tickled. “I want to kiss you, Jae. I know that’s crazy.”

My lips parted, and a half-sigh came out. I wrapped my fingers around his wrist, felt the tendons in his arm strung tight. I deserved one kiss, didn’t I? After surviving my near-drowning, I deserved a man as delicious looking as him kissing me senseless in the starlight. “Kiss me, Hanson.”

Where Do Ideas Come From? by E. Curtis – Guest Blog and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. One randomly chosen winner via rafflecopter will win a $50 Amazon/BN.com gift card. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Where do ideas come from?
The ether, visions, and transportations.

The imaginative visions stem from an over-active imagination. They overwhelm me and haunt me until I put them on paper. Though not divine, they are rather uplifting, seeming to take me outside of myself. There is a sense of delirium in these trancelike states, with my mind connected to and drifting about the ether. The visions seem imposed rather than some forced line of thinking. I don’t choose what I see, the visions just come to me.

From a haunted past that used to paralyze me as a child, the fear later settled, the experiences had become familiar, and the darkness of which I was aware became a fascination. Not that I gave myself up to it, but unavoidable, I grew enchanted, questioning what these dark adventures meant.

One night, a vision of England overtook me. A woman I did not know stood close, though she did not speak to me or look up to me, I heard her thoughts in my mind, expressing a sense of disappointment with my current state of goodness, or lack thereof, I thought you’d be better by now. As if there was some anticipation of our meeting, for we had never met before. She bid me follow her. We walked across a field of burnt brown grass, and from the air I sensed the place to be somewhere in England, probably a park just outside of London. She took me to a rise that met a tree line. Just before the rise, there was a wrought iron double swinger gate, tall than I, with a bluish tarnish in the metal work. From a distance the gate looked like oddly arrayed black antlers tied together, but up close the work was obviously man made, with hammered dimples in the crescent shapes of metal. One side was pulled slightly open, and though one could see the rest of the park through the bars, a golden light spilled from the opening, as if something substantial and of another world lay beyond. Something about it gave me pause, so I didn’t open it any further or enter. When I asked my visitor of the significance and who she was, no answers were given, and I was released from the vision, the message delivered. I still question what it meant, but, as yet, I have no answers.

In the fall of 1789, on the western edge of the Yorkshire Dales, a dense, persistent fog enshrouds the village of Ingleton. Shadowed spirits hide in the mist and bedevil the townsfolk, heralding a tragedy that has befallen one of their own.

Edmond continues to search for Alexandra, his fiancée, who disappeared the same night that the mist set upon their town. Presumed dead by all others, he visits Alexandra’s empty grave, desperate for any hint of what has become of her. Weary from the sleepless nights on his quest, no longer able to stay awake, Edmond falls into a dream before her headstone and there obtains clues from Alexandra as to her whereabouts.

Haunted all the while by a malevolent spirit, Edmond follows the trail that Alexandra left for him and enters the underworld, only to learn that he has been there before, and in fact, quite often. But more, he discovers how he is to blame for Alexandra’s disappearance.

A dark literary novel rich in imagery, Discussion of a Decent Dream unearths the consequences of a child’s decision to surrender his heart in exchange for unholy power and transcendent knowledge.

Discussion of a Decent Dream is a Finalist in Britain’s Wishing Self Book Awards in the Adult category.

Enjoy an Excerpt:

We ignored the portent that crept into the countryside the day she disappeared. But in the weeks that followed, with no answers as to what had befallen her, with no assurance that she still lived, we came to understand, and most saw the worst in the blanket of mist that stopped time and shut us out from the rest of the world.

I had just turned twenty-one the summer of 1789 when Alexandra went missing. And after all our fruitless searching, in need of some direction, I snuck, under the cover of night, into the yard where her parents had laid their sorrow to rest. Falling to my knees before the stone of her empty grave I spoke with reverence, not for the hallowed ground, but for the call that brought me, as though somehow she could hear me.

What Kind of Writer Am I by Gardner Browning – Guest Blog and Giveaway

What Kind of Writer Am I

Immersive is the word that best describes what kind of writer I am. When I have an idea for a story, I make lots of notes for settings, characters, conflict and resolutions. I write down ideas for twists and pinch points. Then, I do research as needed. I read about the places, people, technology, history and cultures that will impact and shape my story. Once I feel fully immersed, I map out my plot to ensure that the story’s foundation and framework is as fully developed as possible.

I think long and hard about a cinematic opening hook for the story and soon I’m off writing in units of scenes, hitting the benchmarks of my plot outline. The process of writing a novel gets even more immersive for me the deeper I go. The story becomes an obsession. My mind becomes trapped in the world I’m writing about and my heart is fully attached to the characters and it’s as if they are friends of mine who I look forward to spending time with. As the writing goes on and the manuscript becomes fatter, I lose sleep, my imagination is relentless. My dreams are often of places in the story. As the characters—my friends—suffer the hardships of the rising conflict, I suffer with them. If they are sad, I am sad. If they are excited, so am I. Fully immersed and held captive by the world I’ve created. The story moves forward because I blew the wind into the sails, starting these events into motion. The characters do as I command but they speak at will and feel with their own hearts.

When the story is told and there’s no more left to write, I am freed, released back to the real world, where real people live, love, suffer and laugh. My mind is quiet for a while and my heart aches, almost yearning to go back to the places in the pages but there’s now a disconnect and I can’t become fully immersed again. It’s like I’ve been shut out. The story is told. My job is done. In the real world, without the characters I’ve spent so much time with, I feel lonely for a while. Sometimes a little lost. I feel like I can’t connect with real people or real places; like I can’t become immersed in reality.

When I finally find my way back to the real people and places I know and love, a new idea comes to me. A story curls up like a tiny sprout reaching for the sunlight and rain of my imagination.

It begins again.

A microscopic parasite has crippled humanity with night terrors and paralyzing anxiety. In this world of increasing dystopia, hope yet remains in Karma City. But when mercenary drifter, Jameson Shoals, learns that a famous scientist has created a stronger parasite to kill the original, it isn’t until the bodies litter the streets that he realizes the horrifying truth: the new parasite is a killer with a mind of its own, and upon dominating Patient Zero, this killer acquires legs, hands, and eyes. It falls upon Shoals and his partner, a deadly female mercenary, to stop PZ and his mob before they can overcome and supplant humankind.

Jameson Shoals crouched to keep his balance atop the speeding train. The wind beat against his leather jacket, scattering his collar length, brunet hair over his eyes like a frayed, muddy rag. The scalding steam and smoke puffing from the locomotive singed his nostrils. Raising his shotgun at the attacker standing only a few feet away, he shouted, “You’re in a real heap of shit, pal.”

The man glared at Jameson, with blond hair framing his gaunt face like tendrils of fire . His
spindly legs backed to the edge of the train car roof with unnatural balance. “You should consider your own life,” he hissed. Amber light burned in the man’s hollow, jack-o-lantern eyes. “Detonation is imminent.”

Before Jameson could shoot, the man leapt from the train, flipping backward and vanishing into the night.

Choosing the City of Chicago as a Setting

Even from the very moments of the opening scenes, DERRICK transports the reader to the heart of Chicago. Throughout the book, various locations around the city and iconic destinations, the reader will admire the beauty and even darkness of Chicago. In Book 1 of the Gavin Nolan Trilogy, GAVIN immerses the reader in the vibrancy of city life. When I wrote both GAVIN and now DERRICK, Chicago was a just a natural choice as a setting for several reasons.

First and foremost, Chicago has a rich, turbulent history. Between the historic landmarks, the Great Chicago Fire, infamous gangsters, 1893 World’s Fair, and the fated Chicago Stockyards, Chicago was built on determination, dedication and devotion. The city created a unique cityscape in the heart of the Midwest which bridged the East Coast and the West Coast. The beautiful turn-of-the-century architecture, the towering skyscrapers and the futuristic modern glass structures line Michigan Avenue, State Street and Wabash with both reverie and prestige. One can only imagine the streets of the burgeoning city in the Industrial Era, changing landscapes as buildings rose to the heavens in midcentury and the modern expanse circumventing the city to spiral out in the neighborhoods. In addition, Chicago truly becomes a tertiary character. Echoing New York City and Los Angeles, Chicago’s bustling city life does not cease. Within the subtle shadows of DERRICK and GAVIN, Chicago can be seen as constant moving mechanism as it always stirs at any given point of the day. As you read my books, you will feel this motion of city life through bustling traffic noises, an intoxicating fragrance and busy streets full of people.

On a personal note, I lived in Chicago for nearly two decades. Having been raised in Milwaukee, WI, I didn’t know of any city larger. When I was eleven, my older sister and I travelled to Chicago, which had a profound effect on me. The grandeur and beauty of the city stole my imagination, and even then, I was instantaneously smitten for Chicago’s zeal of life. About fifteen years later, an opportunity rose for relocating to Chicago, which I grabbed immediately. With much excitement and trepidation, I became immersed in the city by touring and visiting as many sites, locations, museums and neighborhoods throughout the area. My admiration for Chicago comes out through Derrick’s poignant moments in the book.

Even though I currently live in South Texas, and had lived in Upstate New York, I often go back to my pseudo-hometown of Chicago and admire the beautiful glass and steel scenery. The city gives me a sense of wonder and awe. Each time when I see the beautiful city scape, I feel the goosebumps rise on my arms, and become memorized by the beauty.

In Hyde Park, a movie theater erupts in flames on a bitterly cold November evening.

It seems like a job for the fire department, but under Captain Creighton’s direct orders, Detective Gavin Nolan and his partner, Derrick Williamson, must investigate. Arriving on the chaotic scene, they find multiple fatalities —but one of the victims is most peculiar…

Gavin soon discovers that this fire wasn’t the first of its kind. The arsonist has set ablaze other buildings around Chicago, and more female victims left in the same gruesome state have been discovered.

Gavin and Derrick determine that the arsonist is not an arsonist at all—but a sinister serial killer with an agenda.

Juggling the unexpected events in his personal life, Gavin digs into the locations of the explosions. At the same time, Derrick probes into the victims’ lives, searching for any possible connection.

However, when the next explosion occurs, the killer leaves behind a significant object, and Derrick becomes noticeably reserved. Gavin soon uncovers an enigmatic link, one that points to Derrick’s military past. A time that his partner had wished to forget. Yet, to catch the vicious maniac, Derrick must tell Gavin everything.

In a suspenseful, gripping ride to the end, it is up to Gavin to rescue his partner from the clutches of a killer. But will he make it in time?

Alarmed, the woman’s eyes opened. Her nerves twitched slightly, as if an electric shock rattled her body.

Instantly, an eerie darkness consumed her, and an unusual stillness blanketed her surroundings.

Where am I? the woman wondered.

With her instinctual medical training, she began immediately diagnosing her own condition: blurry vision, raspy breath, citrus acidic taste at the back of her throat, and weak muscles. The signs were a tell-all. She had been drugged. Most likely either clonazepam or estazolam.

As her thick braids fell in front of her eyes, she realized that her body was hanging in midair. Above her, a rope bound her hands. The burning strain in her deltoids ached deep into her lower back.

The air was unusually frigid. Her entire body was trembling. She looked down and realized she was completely naked.

Who took off my clothes? she thought, her mind racing with a fresh wave of panic.

All she could remember was getting home from a run in the cold rain of a late November day that had chilled her to the core. Since the presentation of her dissertation was only days away, she relieved the building stress with those exhilarating runs. They were especially liberating knowing that she had to head back to the university lab. Entering the darkened house, she had sworn she’d left the light on. She recalled a quick shadow slipping just behind her in her peripheral vision. She’d felt a sudden blow to head, had fallen against the wooden banister—

What day is it? The presentation was on Saturday. Did she miss it? A sense of dread engulfed her, then fear. All the seemingly endless months and years of planning her project, all the meetings with that arrogant, dimwitted professor, all those countless hours in the lab…it would all be for nothing. Most importantly, all the sacrifices she’d made with her family, spending so much time away from her daughter—and well, her husband too— would be just a waste.
