Murder at Eagle’s Nest is a gentle mystery novel set in a peaceful vacation resort in Apalachicola on Florida’s Forgotten Coast. The area is still reeling after Hurricane Michael made landfall only thirty-five miles to the west, on Mexico Beach. It uncovers fraud, driven by greed and arrogance. However, everything changes when a body is discovered. The police detective brought in from Tallahassee, quickly enlists the help of two women staying at the resort, who have unusual insight. They ultimately uncover critical evidence, which unmasks the perpetrator.

In the end, Michael made landfall on October 10th 2018 as the first category five hurricane to hit the U.S. mainland for more than twenty-five years. Its ‘bullseye’ was Mexico Beach, and the result was that much of this thriving little coastal town was almost completely destroyed. Several days after the storm, a worker in the nearby forest, found a weather station that had been blown inland by the storm. He was surprised to discover that the data was still intact, and it had recorded a 206mph wind gust before it was blown away and stopped recording.

The pier, had been the signature landmark in Mexico beach since 1967 and had provided a place for tourists to fish, or sit drinking a cup of coffee in the morning, or watch the sun set in the evening. Now it was completely gone, there was not even one wooden post sticking up out of the surf to show it had ever existed, except in the photographs and memories of generations of tourists. Most of the surrounding homes and condos had been reduced to rubble sitting on concrete foundations. Even the Federal government (FEMA) had declared the community as ‘wiped out’. The few homes that had survived were newer homes which had been built on stilts, but even those stood in varying degrees of disrepair with tattered siding and gaping holes in the roof. Everywhere you looked was destruction and devastation!

As Hurricane Michael swirled in the Gulf, Anna Kohl and Hazel Davies were a thousand miles north, safe in their home near Columbus, Ohio watching it on the news and praying for the people in the panhandle. Storms were always a time for prayer, but their prayers were intensified on this occasion as they had friends on the Forgotten Coast and only six months earlier, they had purchased a small condominium in Apalachicola as an investment and an occasional winter retreat. Their friends had evacuated ahead of the storm, so they were safe, but their homes and properties were still a cause for concern.

My two previous books, Finding God in an RV and The Power Within, document my spiritual journey. However, as a longtime lover of murder mysteries, with a passion to follow plots and figure out the perpetrator, it was time for a new direction. I decided to ‘try my hand’ at weaving my own story, and true to my character, I had to tie up all the loose ends. Murder at Eagles Nest is my first mystery novel, and I am already working on the next mystery for my amateur detectives, Hazel and Anna, to solve.

Character Interview with Wade from The Twisted Oak by Sarah Hadley Brook – Guest Blog and Giveaway

Enjoy a Character Interview
Annie: Hi all! Annie Marsh here from the Ruby Times. I’m here with Wade Dwyer, the star of The Twisted Oak! Thanks for being here, Wade.

Wade: Thanks for having me, Annie. There are a lot of great characters in the story, though. I’m definitely not the star.

Annie: He’s blushing, guys. So humble…. *sigh*… okay, so let’s just jump into it, Wade. Your story takes place right here in Ruby, our little gem in Wyoming. How long have you lived here?

Wade: I was born here. I did go away to college, but my heart was here. I came back to the Dwyer Ranch after I graduated. My brothers were here, my friends…I knew I wanted to spend my life here. Ruby is more than just the same-old, same-old small town. There’s such a warmth to the people who live here. Well, most of them.

Annie: I know I’m biased, but I have to agree. I love living here! But after the way your father tried to cut you out of the will, weren’t you even tempted to leave Ruby?

Wade: I’m a little ashamed to admit it, but yeah—I did think of cutting and running a couple of times.

Annie: What stopped you?

Wade: My family is here. I’m the middle of three boys. Casey’s my older brother and Landon is the youngest. Landon’s graduating from high school this year. They didn’t deserve to lose the ranch because my father was hateful. I just couldn’t do that. Casey has spent his life building up this ranch and he was born to run it. And of course, there was Lance….

Annie: Ahh, yes, Lance Matthews, the man behind the plan, huh?

Wade: (Laughs) Yes, ma’am. He did come up with the “plan”.

Annie: How shocked were you when he suggested you marry him?

Wade: I would have been less shocked if aliens had landed on the ranch and taught my cattle to moo “Jingle Bells”. To say I was thrown for a loop is an understatement. I mean, what he did… he’s such a good man. He’s been Casey’s best friend since childhood. He’s a brilliant lawyer. I just… was overwhelmed by his generosity. He wanted to help save the ranch as much as we did. He’s the best man… best person I’ve ever known.

Annie: Sounds like you fell pretty hard for him.

Wade: (Grinning) I’d be lying if I said sharing a bed with the sexiest man around was a hardship. I’d had a crush on him since I was a teenager. Found myself comparing every man I dated to Lance. Nobody could measure up in my eyes. Wasn’t fair to anyone, so I just kind of gave up on dating.

Annie: And now you’re married. Is it Happily Ever After?

Wade: Well, you’ll have to read the story to find that out!

Wade Dwyer’s life is turned upside down when his father dies and he learns he must marry or he and his siblings will lose the ranch. One last jab of the knife from his father. On top of that, his father’s only friend knows about the stipulation and is determined to own the property by any means necessary.

He’s facing the very real possibility of being the reason his family loses their home when his brother’s best friend, Lance Matthews, offers to walk down the aisle with him. A faux marriage to the man he’s loved for years is a torture he isn’t sure he can endure.

Can he keep the ranch … and the man of his dreams, too?

Over an hour later, covered in dirt and grime and smelling like cattle, Wade walked through the back door into the kitchen and was immediately met by a furious Allyson.

“What the hell? Do you know people are already arriving? The wedding starts in fifteen minutes, Wade.” She stood in his way, her hand on her waist. Her purple dress clung to her small frame, ending just above her knees, and Wade couldn’t help think that Casey was a lucky man. Allyson was beautiful in a wholesome, girl-next-door kind of way. Her auburn hair, more red than orange, hung down in ringlets around her shoulders. Her cornflower blue eyes sparked with anger as he met her gaze and he wanted to take a step back, but refused to cower to someone standing barely over five feet.

“Well?”

He lost the battle and took that step back. It didn’t matter. She took a step forward.

“Cattle got out. I texted,” he explained, his eyes flitting around the kitchen. Something smelled really good, like apples and cinnamon, and his stomach rumbled. He was starving.

“Lance and Casey have already brought everything over from Lance’s and they’ve dressed for the wedding,” she accused, pointing a finger at him. “You know you could have let Charlie handle this.”

His hackles up, he straightened and looked her in the eye. “He’s got some people fixing the fence right now, but no, I needed to handle this. Milton Randle tried to steal some of our cattle. A Dwyer needed to be there.”

Her shoulders sagged a little and she let out a huff. “Fine, but you owe Lance an apology. He thinks you don’t want to do this.”

Wade stared at her. “It’s a fake wedding. Of course I don’t want to do this.”

She pressed her lips into a thin line and looked at him hard. “Go get ready, Wade. And you better think about what you just said. This man is uprooting his life to ensure you and your brothers can keep your land. I don’t know about you, but I’ve never known anyone that kind. Have you?”

No. Definitely not. Properly chagrined, he nodded. “You’re right.”

“Of course I am.”

Wade smiled. She may not be married to his brother yet, but she was already part of the family.

“What?” she asked, obviously not quite ready to let go of the mad.

“Casey’s lucky.”

She blushed and shook her hair. “Right again. Now go get ready. You’ve got maybe ten minutes, tops. Your suit is laid out in Casey’s room. Use his shower—your room is a mess with the move right now. I’ll stall for as long as I can, but you make sure you look and smell good when you come downstairs.”

“Yes, ma’am,” he replied and watched her turn on her heels and leave the kitchen, mumbling something under her breath—something that sounded suspiciously like “idiot,” but he didn’t have time to dwell. He took the back stairs two at a time.

I invite her into the circle of my arms. She leans against me and rests her head on my shoulder. Above us, the moon is nearly full, casting bluish light across the river. The sky is a starry mess.

“Look.” I point to the sky. “There’s Ursa Major.”

“What?” she asks.

“The bear constellation.”

“Where is it? Show me.”

I raise her hand and trace the starry image like I’m doing a dot-to-dot picture. “There’s the head.” I swoop her hand left. “And there’s the tail.” I finish by pointing out the bear’s front and rear legs.

“The way you do it makes it look like a skinny, headless dog,” she says.

I laugh. “Where’s your imagination?”

“Let me try.” She lifts my hand and traces a detailed shape of a bear, describing the air-drawing from ear to toe. “Is that better?”

“Perfect,” I say. “Like you.”

She laces her fingers through mine.

I rub tiny circles on her palm with my thumb as I speak. “When I was a kid, I used to fear the bear would swoop down from the sky and eat me alive.”

“That’s horrible.” She presses her lips together, and her ribs shake in suppressed mirth.

“I wouldn’t laugh if I were you,” I say. “Elisi says that bear is pretty bad.”

“Don’t worry. I’ll protect you from Starbear.” She makes a muscle, flexing and releasing her cute bicep.

“You will, huh?” I tickle her side.

She squeals, wiggles around, and digs her fingers into my ribs. We engage in a full out tickle-war. In the middle of our battle, the wind shifts and the earth rotates, and soon we’re on the ground with her straddling me, both of us panting.

Our eyes lock, and I brush a strand of hair behind her ear.

She leans over inch at a time until her nose touches mine. She kisses me, only a peck, then runs the tip of her tongue around lightly around my lips. Unable to resist any longer, I pull her to me and crush my mouth into hers.

Nothing hurt quite like the sharp beak of a phoenix jabbed straight into my scalp.

I growled a curse as I leapt up into a sitting position on my bed. Was I bleeding? I ran a shaky hand through my disheveled black hair and flinched when I grazed the tiny puncture wound. Some blood, but not much.

“Good morning, Volke,” the phoenix said, his voice chipper.

I took a deep breath. “Hello, Forsythe.”

“My arcanist wanted to know if you were ready to train.”

“Yeah. Just give me a moment.”

The stinging pain removed all grogginess. I couldn’t go back to sleep now, even if I wanted to. After another deep breath, I peered through the open window. The sun had yet to rise. The purple hue of the sky, dotted with a handful of stars, meant we still had an hour before dawn.

“He’s already awake?” I asked.

“He’s been determined to work hard ever since he escaped Calisto’s pirate ship.” Forsythe tilted his head from side to side. “And you did say you would train with him whenever he asked.”

Although it was dark outside, Forsythe illuminated my room. A gentle glow radiated from beneath his scarlet feathers, like his body was made of flame. The rest of him resembled a large heron with delicate features, including a long neck and a pointed beak. His gold eyes stayed fixed on me as I flung my legs over the side of the bed.

I loved phoenixes, but every time they moved around, soot fell from the smolder of fire hidden beneath their feathers. A trail of it led from the windowsill to my bed.

“I was surprised to see you had body art.”

“It isn’t body art. It is my belief. I guess that’s why I don’t show them. It’s personal. They are of my Goddess, Mother Earth and the symbol of our tribe, the mighty eagle. The Mother Earth Tree Goddess demonstrates the circle of life. Where all things on land, air and water are connected. They are all one. If one element is removed, the tree will wither and die. We believe that it is the same for people. We must be as one or we will all eventually suffer. The Eagle is our symbol for bravery, something that is essential to take on such a derêp.” He saw her puzzled look and continued before she could speak. “Derêp is our word for job or chore. The Eagle is dedicated to protecting our tribe, which is a very difficult job. I use his image to remind myself each day that my task is difficult and not to falter. If you were just another chick, maybe I’d say they were body art, but I want to share that part of me with you.”

“So…” she teased. “How many other chicks have admired your body art?”

He laughed lightly with maybe a hint of a gallows laugh, “Not as many as you might guess.”

Each year the residents of Nether Haddon celebrate the village’s founding in the time-honored way with games, music, and performances by their sword dancers. But something new is added to the fancy footwork this year: a team member dies … murdered. Fear, jealousy and suspicion quickly engulf the group, emotions as tightly interlocked as the five swords used in the dance: a series of turns, jumps and clogging steps intricate as Celtic knots. Was the victim the intended target, or should it have been someone else? In the course of the CID investigation, a mysterious 17th century puzzle is discovered. Does it hold a clue to the murder? Detective Brenna Taylor and her colleagues have more than enough to worry about. But unbeknownst to her, career criminal King Roper has escaped from prison where he was serving time for murder. Now free and eager to settle the score for his capture, Roper tracks down Brenna’s whereabouts, ready for revenge…

Dr. Robert Paladin had never operated on so notorious a criminal as King Roper. He’d been with Leeds General Hospital his entire career, since leaving his residency at Manchester Royal Infirmary twenty years prior. Yet that Monday morning, for the first time in his twenty-four years as a surgeon, he found it necessary to remind himself that he’d taken an oath all those years ago, an oath to assist everyone who needed medical attention, regardless of the patient’s social status. Still, the fact that he was about to operate on a known murderer made Paladin uneasy. He nudged the edge of Roper’s file folder, squaring up the bottom with the edge of his desk. The handwritten sticky note on the file cover stated the man’s condition in layman’s terms:

He picked up the folder, angling it in the sunlight. Surprised at the thickness of the file, he leafed idly through the papers. Typewritten pages gave way to computer printouts. Officials’ names varied, police departments and prisons changed, but the constant of King Roper’s career remained unvarying. Unless severity in his crimes constituted a shift. Paladin glanced at the top page. Smuggling, trafficking, kidnapping, murder. An assault on at least three in law enforcement.

Paladin lowered the folder slowly to his desktop. This was not going to be easy, surgery on the arm of someone so vile, so repulsive to his own morals. He gazed at the window, not really seeing it, but instead picturing what Roper might look like, what his personality might be. The face never did come into sharp focus, but no matter the presumed height, weight, or body type, Roper’s image always ended up with dark hair and eyes. Perhaps it was a throwback to good versus evil, light versus dark. He most likely was muscular, Paladin thought, and perhaps his body carried physical remnants of fights he’d had. Perhaps he was unscathed, his fingernails manicured and his face clean-shaven, signs that his underlings did the actual dirty work. Or perhaps he stuck his manicured hand into it every so often, the taste for blood or the thrill of wielding the knife too strong to cede. Whatever Roper turned out to be, both visions repulsed Paladin, and he found himself stiffening. Am I patching him up so he can continue inf
licting harm, perhaps murdering again? Is that why I’m a surgeon?

The minutes slipped away as the sunlight slowly slid across his desk. His Hippocratic oath guaranteed he’d do his best during Roper’s operation. But his family and faceless, nameless others whispered to him, silently asking for a surgical accident. Things routinely go wrong on the table; could he rid the world of this monster? Would it honestly matter to Society if he did? He glanced at the brass-cased clock on his desk. 0610 hours. Surgery on King Roper wasn’t until 1100. He had five hours to struggle with his conscience.

I want to start by thanking Long and Short Reviews for taking the time for this interview. Okay, let’s get down to business. Here are a bunch of things that (I think) most people don’t know (or guess) about me. Well, here we go.

1. I was on the television show Bozo the Clown. Don’t judge me. I was a cute kid.

2. To go with my tough guy motif, I own a Toy Poodle named Ringo Biggles Woofington. He may, or may not, have a guess appearance in Poisoned Pawn. I have included a photo of him.

3. I am a black belt in Tae Kwon Do (the style of combat the main character uses in Poisoned Pawn)

4. To support my writing addiction and excessively extravagant lifestyle, I am a data scientist and forensic statistician.

5. My hobbies include reinventing the wheel, the Sisyphus relief project, and referring to myself in third person as THE David lest fools confuse me with the other ones.

6. I have a kick-ass comic collection (which makes me popular with the ladies… right?).

Caleb Jacobs is a man with a past. After serving on a failed dark ops assignment in Afghanistan, he leaves Marine Corps Intelligence to try to build a new life in Philadelphia as a homicide police detective.

Jacobs is happy, for a time, until he is assigned to solve the murder of Shannon Faraday. During the investigation, he is convinced the evidence points to him as the killer. He knows it is only a matter of time before other investigators see the same. He has no alibi and the clock is counting down.

Behind his partner’s back, Jacobs hires a private investigator named Lawrence Holmes. The PI is an irritation to the police, but he is unmistakably brilliant. And, many powerful people in the city owe him favors. Holmes is a bit odd. He insists on calling Jacobs Watson but claims to never have heard the name Sherlock. Jacobs can live with this kind of crazy as long as together they find the real killer.

They quickly link the murder to a series of seemingly unrelated crimes occurring throughout Philadelphia, and Jacobs becomes convinced the murder is related to the truth of what had happened during his time in Afghanistan. Old secrets have come back to haunt him.

I felt like shit for having to hire a private investigator, especially one who was most likely insane. Still, I couldn’t deny that his type of crazy got results. Reluctantly I handed over an envelope to the man sitting on the sun-bleached bench.

He opened it. Satisfied with my offering, he slid it into his jacket. “Ah, Watson,” he said. “Good to see you again.”

I shook my head and dropped onto the bench next to him. “My name is Jacobs. Caleb Jacobs,” I said, hoping the reminder might stick this time.

He turned to me. “Did you say something?”

I sighed. “No, Holmes.”

If I wasn’t desperate for his help, I’d strangle him. Of course my superiors at the Philadelphia Homicide Unit wouldn’t appreciate that. But I wondered if a cop hiring a private investigator was any worse of a violation. I needed Lawrence Holmes for his connections and unique viewpoint, things my PHU colleagues couldn’t provide. He might not be the fictional character he played at, but he was a talented PI.

About the Author:

To support his writing addiction and excessively extravagant lifestyle, David Siegel Bernstein, PhD, is a data scientist who consults as a forensic statistician. That sounds really boring until you realize that his clients include the US National Security Agency (NSA), the Secret Service, the FBI, the Department of Justice (DOJ), and a host of other acronymonious agencies who cultivate exciting and shadowy reputations. Alas, those reputations are mere facades that disguise the real reason these organizations exist, which is to keep him entertained and fed.

When David wants a break from this spellbinding work, he writes. His fiction credits encompass two novelettes and sixty shorts. His nonfiction has appeared in newsletters, popular blogs, academic journals and he is the author of the book Blockbuster Science: The Real Science in Science Fiction.

He lives within the shadow of Philadelphia with his wife, Michelle, two children, Seth and Gwendolyn, and a dog named Ringo Biggles Woofington.

How to handle negative criticism

Hurray! Your book is published, its cover attractively glowing on a virtual or physical shelf, or ideally on both! Congratulations! That’s when you’re trapped! You’re now stepping into the least comfortable parts of the road, nervously waiting for feedback from your potential readers.

I think it’s better if I say it now: Listen, you’ll have gigantic bumps on that road, and do not under any circumstances believe anyone who tells you otherwise, ever.

You’re going to have readers who, unlike your immediate family members or few of your close friends, won’t necessarily think that you’re the next Jane Austen, Donna Tartt, or J.K. Rowling.

Sadly, the ones not believing in your inner brilliance and that unparalleled talent of yours will often be in the majority. Yes, that’s exactly how tough it is! And it won’t help a tiny bit that your genius mind is to remember every word of every critical feedback you’ll ever receive, every sentence and comma in all of the negative reviews of your book!

Let’s be honest, there are so many reasons why your book can be hated; For the cover? Yes! For the story? Yes! For the characters? Definitely! For the beginning? Yes! For the middle?Undoubtedly! And for the end? Yes, yes, and million times yes! You may even become a queen of one-star reviews, and if you think you can prepare yourself for it, well, the truth is, no single human being living in the entire galaxy, has ever been prone to negativity and criticism. It’s painful, it shatters you, you feel betrayed and destroyed! Yes, I know, been there. Yes, life is unfair! At least sometimes. Read, often.

But guess what? As much as you’d want it to, luckily, the world doesn’t stop because someone has criticized your work. The universe doesn’t give a damn about it. Neither about you nor about the author of your bad review. You’ll both live happily ever after, in the parallel worlds. So, be the universe, keep moving forward, keep writing, that’s the only way to deal with it, I’m afraid.

Love, memories, family, enduring friendships, cooking, movies, dogs, travels, hairstyles, and saying Yes to many No’s in a witty, yet often sentimental, journey of self-discovery…

You Will Have a Black Labrador is a collection of semiautobiographical essays forming a narrative about a modern Georgian woman. Her stories range from the search for a perfect romantic partner to exploring food as an integral part of the Georgian culture. Many of the vignettes center on childhood memories or weird family traditions, such as the way family members stay connected no matter if they’re deceased or alive. One essay reveals how making a simple omelette can change your life; and that No can be the most powerful word in any language. She shows us, too, that a haircut can be a tribute to the movies you love as well as a path to your freedom; and how owning a dog always brings unexpected experiences. In this poignantly humourous collection, reality mixes and interferes with an imaginative world in so many surprising ways.

For my first-ever cooking fiasco, I blame my brother and the day he asked me to make two boiled eggs. I threw myself into the task unaware of the consequences it would have on my life.

‘Don’t forget to salt them, okay?’ he told me nonchalantly, and that detail of adding salt completely ruined my teenager years. The dish I prepared after an hour of struggle resembled boiled eggs like a giraffe resembles a cat. I had no idea how to boil and salt the eggs simultaneously, so I decided to simply smash them into the hot water. By the end of my first-ever culinary attempt, we had no more eggs in the house and I had to clean every surface in our kitchen, accompanied by my brother’s hysterical laughter.

This story became an anecdote. My family members would tell it over and over to their friends and to friends of friends. It mercilessly followed me everywhere I went, and resurfaced when I least expected it. Two boiled eggs—the embarrassment of my life.

That’s why, from the age of eleven or twelve, I was willing to have a go at any new challenge except, well, cooking. But—I have to add a huge but here—in my family, cooking and serving a meal always was, and still is, quintessential. The most important question you’d hear at our house is either ‘Are you hungry?’ or ‘Have you eaten?’ presuming that as long as you were not hungry, everything else was secondary.

Spinning Windows into Doors

Veins are trees. Sprigs shimmer matte Without their foliage.

Invisible ceilings Mark the only barrier Between the shrubs and waves.

Rushes spiral, Slipping into cores, Ripped out stains of the sky.

A sun is a fist In a drawing’s window. Can’t punch through the waves, So it sneaks where water incinerates flesh.

But wait for the canvas, Front and center, Shooting past veins, To the pains of this clerestory.

It’s bleached white With eyes carved of wood and stone. Lips transparent, But deep violet. They restrict the pen Of one who would paint the world In gems and marble-cased grasses.

Emerald green would envelope the drawing, And no one would see the panes.

How could someone Try to resist A face with star flowers Around one eye, Decorated with time above the other?

Does sand permeate the window? Could it shut down time, And freeze the halves of pink chrysanthemums To shatter its own cheeks?

An image without purpose, Must spin the window Into a door.
