Cruelly deceived in love, Sir Philip Levington quits London just before Christmas for his new property, Fairhill Park, near Lyme Regis in Dorset. He arrives unannounced—and the last thing he expects to find is a new love.

Madeleine Charlton, daughter of the impoverished previous owner, is trespassing to pick seasonal greenery. She flees after Philip joins her in an imaginary waltz, but the attraction between them is undeniable. He finds her again, a warm friendship ensues and they share a kiss beneath the mistletoe. Then his spiteful former love arrives, determined to win him again.

Madeleine and Philip’s happiness rests on the power of a Christmas kiss.

I was charmed by this delightful read-in-one-sitting Christmas regency. I found the story fun, but I particularly liked Madeleine Charlton. She’s the type of girl I’d enjoy having as a friend—adventurous without being foolish, talented yet truly humble, bright without flaunting it, and strong-willed yet willing to admit she’s wrong. In regency terms, she is truly “without artifice.” She’s the kind of girl who deserves a happily-ever-after.

Sir Philip Levington is the perfect hero for Madeleine. He shares her strong will yet is also willing to confess his mistakes and apologize for them. This story is light and sweet. It would be a balm in the hectic pre-holiday rush. Unfortunately, the distant narrative style of The Fourth Kiss prevented me from participating fully in the story. It did not, however, stop me from enjoying the tale. If you are looking for a short escape from everyday hassles, this stress-free holiday confection might be just the thing.

Single mom Jami Rhodes “wins” a romantic getaway with her ideal match. Only the contest is a publicity sham to launch her friend Sierra’s Internet matchmaking service, CupidKey, and the “match” is Sierra’s brother-in-law, Grant Carrington. Miffed for being railroaded, Jami drags along her mischievous little boy, Toby. As if Toby isn’t enough trouble, Grant gets stuck with the infamous Carrington Cupid charm. A clash of wills ensues, proving love sometimes needs a bit of magic.

Turns out I was wrong. It was her son Toby who caused all the trouble. Sometimes even to such an extent I wondered how such a good mother ended up with such an unmanageable child. It took almost the whole book before I warmed up to him.

The author paints a very vivid background for her setting, and her secondary characters are, in their individual ways, charming.

The hero, Grant Carrington has a reputation to live down, and trust becomes a big divider between them. Coupled with Jami’s need to retain her self-sufficiency, they were in for a trial.

This, the first in Ms. Rigley’s CupidKey series, is a delightful story that builds steadily, with the hero and heroine overcoming several setbacks, to a charming and unusual ending.

The writer’s style is easy to read, her characters come across as people you might meet in ‘real life’, and the tale captivated me. If sweet and real is what you’re in the mood for, pick up a copy of That Carrington Magic.

When asleep, Steve dreams the next day; when awake, Steve tries not to make his dreams come true.

Every night, Steve dreams about the next day. It’s as if he is living each day twice–once asleep and once awake–and he is tired of it. When he learns his old girlfriend, Dawn, is home from college for the summer, he contacts her and begs her to help him find a way to stop dreaming of each day. As they grow close once again, she suggests he defy his dreams and do the opposite of whatever he dreams of each night. But then Steve is faced with a decision: does he follow his dream of being back with Dawn or does he do the opposite of what he dreamed and let go of her once again? How can he ever find the way to dream beyond tomorrow?

It’s all about dreams—putting your dreams on hold, asking others to change theirs for you, and maybe, eventually, embracing your dreams and seeing where they lead you.

Steven Wespers has had enough of dreams to last a life time. Not only did he have to put his personal ambitions on hold to care for his family following his father’s unexpected death, now he’s previewing his mundane life while he sleeps. It’s confusing, exhausting, and really hard to explain especially to the girl you love. He hasn’t seen Dawn, the love of his life, in two years, not since he popped the question and she left to follow her dreams. Now, she’s back. Day Dreamer has good bones. It starts with a great scene, ends with a good scene, and is tied together by a strong theme. It even has character growth. However, when an entire summer is covered in thirty-three pages it tends to become a series of lists and generalities instead of interestingly drawn moments the reader gets to live through with the characters. And that’s what happened here.

I’m not saying this was a bad book; just that it should have been a really good book. It has the bones. I’d have loved to see the glossed over relationship expanded and Steven’s revelations shown as full scenes.

If you are in the mood for pondering a quirky problem and discovering the author’s interesting solution without a lot of story in between, this quick tale might be just what you’re looking for.

When an aristocratic rake faces either prison or rustication with a ‘rabbity brown-haired’ country miss, he seriously considers taking his chances with the law…

Perhaps the term ‘profligate’ is too kind for Robert, Marquis of Denley. He has gambled away his fortune, publicly dueled, and earned a reputation as a cur. Desperate to staunch the family’s financial hemorrhage, Robert’s uncle forces Robert to rusticate in Yorkshire for the purpose of marrying him to the squire’s daughter. This uninteresting alliance would permanently remove his reckless nephew from Society.

But Mary Fanley, a country miss who thinks the pretensions of the bon ton are absurd, has no idea Sir Robert is being coerced into marrying a ‘veritable nobody’. From their first encounter she infuriates him with her dismissive wit. So begins a war of horrific insults and unvarnished contempt.

Yet just as Mary begins to seem quite palatable, a smooth dandy arrives to settle an old score, forcing the Marquis to pay for his past.

With sparkling wit, tongue-in-cheek humor, and a touch of sarcasm, country girl Mary Fanley and Robert Allensham, Marquis of Denley, play at one-upmanship from the moment they meet.

Robert arrives at the Fanley’s Greenly Manor with his life in shambles. Harsh, dissipated, and careworn he has no patience with “rustic” living. But his uncle, Lord Eversham, now holds all of Robert’s assets in trust and has a plan for saving his nephew from self-destruction. Robert’s fear of becoming mad like his father has fueled his rakish, reckless ways up to now. His debts and crimes have put his life in danger.

Robert’s highborn hauteur rubs Mary Fanley the wrong way. She’s well-educated by standards of the time, but more importantly, she’s intelligent, capable, and blessed with common sense. She manages her absent-minded father’s household with servants who took care of her as a child which creates a unique relationship. Mary is somewhat one of the bunch rather than the lady of the manor. Although she has a dowry, she’s resigned to spinsterhood.

The influence Robert and Mary have on each other makes captivating reading.

Some of the secondary characters have a strong impact on events. The humorless Lord Eversham directs Robert’s life with a heavy hand and with good reason. However, some of the situations Robert finds himself in are humorous. Will, Mary’s brother, unwittingly brings the evil, cunning Oscar Neville to Greenly Manor which is like setting the fox among the chickens. Of course, Mary’s father, who lives in his own world of agriculture and notices little else, offers Robert a lifeline as he helps the young man bring Treehill, one of Robert’s properties, back to being a prosperous estate.

The confusion of names and the need for clarification in a few places pulled my attention away from the story at times, but the unfolding of plot and the interesting characters soon had my full attention again.

The extent Robert exerts himself to extract Will Fanley from a critical situation, the bombshell Lord Eversham drops on Robert, and how Robert takes control of his own life give the story some surprising twists and turns. Best of all, the steadfast love that grows as Robert and Mary move from carping at each other to caring for each other, then to loving each other with a sweet, true, forever love makes The Lost Heir of Devonshire a delightful story.

Besides Christmas, Valentine’s Day is the only other magical day, full of surprises, secret admirers, gifts, and love. Ms. An makes use of the spirit of Valentine’s Day to weave a tale filled with possibilities.

After a trip to the mall and a strange ornament shop, Kaylee finds herself back home, only it’s not quite the same. The man on her couch who looks dead can talk into her mind and he insists she’s the one who isn’t supposed to be alive.

After a year of living without his beloved mate, Gregori decides to end his life. Too bad he picked the wrong night. After thieves break into his beloved mate’s home, he finds what can only be a Christmas miracle in the form of his mate, alive and well and as snarky as ever. Given a second chance, Gregori sets out to convince Kaylee that her place is at his side.

Who wouldn’t want a “dream come true” ornament hanging on their tree?

The Ornament is a light Christmas read with a very clever premise. Kaylee is lonely and given to allowing dreams (and dream-lovers) to keep her from real life relationships. Or maybe she’s just holding out for a happily-ever-after. Either way, she’s likeable and the plot line is good—pretty girl touches an antique Christmas ornament and gets sucked into an alternate reality; a world in which her handsome, vampire, dream lover is real.

How long do you hold on to hope?

Danica Greene has always hated flying, so it was almost laughable that the boy of her dreams was a pilot. She married him anyway and together, she and Etsell settled into a life where love really did seem to conquer all. Danica is firmly rooted on the ground in Blackhawk, the small town in northern Iowa where they grew up, and the wide slashes of sky that stretch endlessly across the prairie seem more than enough for Etsell. But when the opportunity to spend three weeks in Alaska helping a pilot friend presents itself, Etsell accepts and their idyllic world is turned upside down. It’s his dream, he reveals, and Danica knows that she can’t stand in the way. Ell is on his last flight before heading home when his plane mysteriously vanishes shortly after takeoff, leaving Danica in a free fall. Etsell is gone, but what exactly does gone mean? Is she a widow? An abandoned wife? Or will Etsell find his way home to her? Danica is forced to search for the truth in her marriage and treks to Alaska to grapple with the unanswerable questions about her husband’s mysterious disappearance. But when she learns that Ell wasn’t flying alone and that a woman is missing, too, the bits and pieces of the careful life that she had constructed for them in Iowa take to the wind. A story of love and loss, and ultimately starting over, Far From Here explores the dynamics of intimacy and the potentially devastating consequences of the little white lies we tell the ones we love.

He’s gone. Her untamable, golden-boy husband flew his plane into the Alaskan sky and disappeared.

Even as teenagers Danica and Etsell were like two halves of a whole. They belonged together, depended on each other. But in the mundane unfolding of life, they forgot to nurture their love, and then fate, destiny, or whatever stepped in.

Too late Danica realizes a love relationship needs gentle care and can never be taken for granted nor shoved around carelessly. Now she must not only deal with the disappearance of her husband, but must also cope with her guilt feelings. She and Etsell had been at odds with each other and almost strangers when he left for Alaska to help a friend, a bush pilot—something he always wanted to be.

Charlene, Danica’s mother, a single mom now in her mid fifties still dresses like a flirt and needs a man in her life—never the same one for long.

Natalie and Katrina are Danica’s older sisters. Natalie escaped the little Midwest town of Blackhawk as soon as possible, went to college, and earned her PhD. Her visits are few and far between, but she comes when Danica’s world that had seemed so solid, shifts, Natalie comes.

Katrina, while older than Danica, had always needed her little sister’s nurturing. Katrina gives unfailing, sassy, sometimes outrageous support to Danica.

Other secondary characters that play an intricate roll in Danica’s healing are: Hazel, the hard-edged, gruff woman who had been Etsell’s surrogate mother since he was eight years old. Sam Linden, a guide at Midnight Sun Lodge in Alaska. And then there’s Benjamin.

Among all these women, Benjamin, Danica’s unobtrusive neighbor, works his quiet magic with ordinary, unremarkable deeds. There are no meaningless platitudes nor does he ask stupid questions. His quiet words calm Danica’s turmoil as she struggles to make sense of her life. He offers his mature, incredible love to Danica only when the time is right. Their happy-ever-after, so deserved, makes this poignant story pulsate with a promise of a new fulfilling life as the future unfolds.

In Far From Here, Nicole Baart takes the reader to the wild, raw, beautiful Alaska, to the quiet little town of Blackhawk in Midwest America, and best of all, she takes the reader into the hearts and minds of phenomenal characters to give a vicarious experience of life with its hurts and its healings in a way rarely experienced in a novel.

The exquisite prose of Nicole Baart with its beautiful symbolism and metaphors quicken the senses making Far From Here pulsate with life—life at time so emotionally painful it takes the breath away. Yet, it overflows with the many types of love flawed individuals give and receive. Ms. Baart’s well-drawn characters and awesome descriptions linger long after the last page is read.

Creative Spark has a little adventure, a little sweet romance, a touch of paranormal and fantasy combined. At first it appeared like an average “evil spirits on the other side” type of book. This very quickly changed to something completely different. I have always considered machines and ghostly spirits to be two different types of stories but the author cleverly blended them together to make an intriguing and interesting book. A little slow to begin with, but definitely worth the perseverance. I liked the fact it didn’t matter that I hadn’t read the first book in the series. I caught up pretty quickly without any long drawn out explanation.

Definitely a worthwhile read for those who like something a tad different.
