He’s a demon…and she’s no angel.

Logan, failed singer and recovering meth addict, is given the chance of a lifetime when a friend offers her the lead spot in his established rock band. But things get complicated when she starts hallucinating human-ish creatures with black eyes who disappear through walls. So when the gorgeous, mysterious Jaeryth falls into her life, claiming he can see the creatures too, she can’t help but feel a bond with him.

Jaeryth is a demon who’s long been obsessed with Logan—so much that he’s been ignoring his demonic duties. As punishment, he’s been made human and charged with corrupting Logan, who harbors a power she’s unaware of that could be used for great good…or evil. And if Jaeryth can’t corrupt her, he has to kill her.

If he doesn’t complete his mission, he’ll spend eternity being tortured. Unfortunately, he’s falling in love with the woman he’s supposed to destroy.

When the book began, it felt like there were two, very different stories that barely belong to be in the same book. First, there was Logan’s story. She’s a recovering drug addict who is trying to get her life back on track despite the obstacles her life has thrown at her. Just when she starts to feel like a feeling of normal is possible, she begins to hallucinate of human beings with black eyes who could move through walls. In that sense, her story was very realistic and contemporary. I loved Logan as a character and throughout the whole book wanted to see her succeed.

Then there was Jaeryth’s story. He is a demon in charge of smaller demons known as Tempters. Those Tempters have to temp people into committing sin. We got to see his paranormal world and the different levels that human’s don’t know about. At first, I didn’t really care for him and when I would get to one of his scenes, I would just want to hurry up and return to Logan’s story. It felt like those were two very different books that would never come together.

When both stories intertwined, that was when the magic happened. The attraction between Logan and Jaeryth was instant but they both hid it and denied it. They became friends, but the feelings grew into so much more. I started to care for Jaeryth as the layers of his character came together. We got to see the good in the demon and learn that he could fall in love and make the biggest sacrifice of his life.

The thing I loved the most about this book was that Jaeryth had weaknesses. Many books with a paranormal hero depict the man as invincible, but not in this case. He could bleed, and get hurt, and get tired, and he needed to really concentrate to see other demons.

By the time the book was coming to an end, I didn’t want to say goodbye to these characters. This was a very enjoyable read and I know I will be checking out more work from this author. If you love a good angels and demons story, you have to read this!!!

The hero of Flagman’s Folly has been gone more than a year. But he still stands between Ben Sawyer and what he desires most—Dana Wright, the love of Ben’s life. When soldier Paul Wright left for the last time, he made his best friend promise to look after his wife and kids. Ben—good, steady Ben—is honoring that promise. And it’s burning him up inside.

Because Dana is shutting Ben out. She wants him—so much—but she can’t afford to give in. If she does, she’ll spill her secret, and the betrayal will hurt everyone she cares about—her children, who loved their daddy; her town, which loves its hero; and Ben, who loved his friend. She’ll do anything to protect her secret—even give up her second chance at happiness.

Lusting after your best friend’s wife is not acceptable behavior for reliable, good old boy, Ben. He is the one folks have come to depend on when it comes to helping others. But when it comes to Dana, his helpful nature may have an ulterior motive. Yes, she may have married his best friend, but she will always be Ben’s girl.

The plot line of this story is what intrigued me, well, that and the sexy cowboys. Dana is out to prove something to others, but most importantly to herself. With or without Paul, her husband, she can take care of herself. I have always considered myself a strong independent woman so this personality trait really hit home for me. So did the fact that sometimes independence and the need to prove something can hurt us just as much as it helps. This is a life lesson Dana had to learn. Though Dana did not make the lesson any easier on herself, it sure did create an interesting read.

If there is really a man out there like Ben, I sure would like to meet him. Ben just seems a little too perfect for me. I have met some men who are reliable and give to others, but Ben just seems to give, and give, and give while taking nothing for himself. While this is a trait I enjoyed reading about in a man, at some point it made it almost too unbelievable. In the end the same characteristics that made Ben perfect, proved to be his Achilles heel as well. With that said, if you are looking for a sexy cowboy who exhibits everything attractive about a cowboy then you sure have come to the right book. He makes something as simple as household maintenance sexy and exciting.

The romantic development is something that left me a longing for more. The relationship between these two is definitely hot and cold. For example, whenever they begin to heat up too much, cold water is thrown on them to cool it down a bit. While I understood the author’s reasoning for this, and it helped explain the individual as well as romantic development, I wish there was just a bit more hot going on without the cooling. More connection that is physical would have been nice. The author however, made small simple gestures truly meaningful. It made me think about how important those small things in a relationship are. For instance, just simple heated looks towards one another or feeling someone’s body heat as you sit next to them made the scenes scorch.

Any time a story makes me reflect on my own personal life, I consider it a winner and Barbara White Daille definitely has a winner with Honorable Rancher.

Romancing Olive . . . 1891 . . . Spinster librarian, Olive Wilkins, is shocked to learn of her brother’s violent death at a saloon gaming table. Compelled to rescue and raise his children, Olive travels to Ohio, intending to return to her Philadelphia home with her niece and nephew. Little does she know that the children have come to love their caretaker, widower Jacob Butler. Will Olive return home without them or learn to love Jacob as well?

Olive was doing just fine living in Philadelphia and leading the nice quiet life of an unmarried woman. She wasn’t fond of the “spinster” connotation but had to admit it did fit her pretty well. She had a good female friend, her own home, her cat, and her routines. She was happy. Then she finds out her brother and his wife have been killed and she has a niece and nephew to collect from the west…

This author writes a very good tale about the early days of farming in the west. Her main female character is a “sissy”, but has a good backbone and a desire to learn what she needs to know to do her job. The wrinkle in the story is named Jacob. He’s a young widower who is taking care of the children since her sister-in-law’s family didn’t want the responsibility. He’s also good looking and it doesn’t take long before Olive finds herself caring a lot about him.

The story of how difficult it is to farm and raise a family and take care of household duties is authentic. It’s still not easy today, but it was much more difficult then. Ms. Bush shows the culture clash between the farmer and the spinster, which is amusing to read about. Another highlight of this story is the mixed family of five children. Each child has their own oddities and watching the adults handle them will make you smile.

One central problem in the story (which adds to the plot) is the grandfather that rejected the children and now wants to take them home as slaves. He’s willing to steal them if he must and neither Olive nor Jacob plan to give them up.

This is a soft sweet romance with strong individuals who will stand up for their beliefs and their children. I found it a pleasure to read and I didn’t want to stop until I reached the end. Olive became a character I admired and wanted the best for and I wanted to thwack Jacob up around the head, but it all comes together at the end.

From bestselling author Lori Copeland, When Love Comes My Way is a love story about redemption, forgiveness, and renewed spiritual awakenings set against the backdrop of scenic Upper Peninsula, Michigan, in the days when pine was king.

Michigan, 1873—As Tess Wakefield wakes from a frightening wagon accident, she discovers she has lost her memories. In her recovery, she loses her heart as well to handsome lumberjack Jake Lannigan. It’s not a two-way street, though. Jake thinks he knows exactly who she is—the spoiled Wakefield Timber heir—but he believes the accident provides the means to show her that she has a responsibility to replant the trees and not to merely invest her inheritance opening another of her silly millinery shops.

Then he slowly he begins to fall in love with her. Jake wants to tell Tess the truth, but before he can her true identity is uncovered, and then both of them find the emotional stakes too high. Will God intervene and show this headstrong couple that only He in His wisdom could have paired them together?

During a bitter cold winter near Lake Huron in late nineteenth century, huge, handsome lumberjack Jake “Big Say” Lannigan and Philadelphia-reared heiress Tess Wakefield, who has amnesia, keep Wakefield Timber logging camp in a stir.

Lori Copeland captivates with a setting that certainly doesn’t seem conducive to romance, but uses it to create a “meant-to-be” love match. She also uses it to bring to life some intriguing characters whose strengths and weakness are revealed as they cope with less than desirable living conditions, hazardous working conditions, and social interactions that stir up conflicts that test integrity, faith, morals, and patience. She besieges the senses: like smells in the bunkhouse; feel of the bitter cold, sight of a moonlit crystal clear night; taste of food after a hard day’s work; sounds of the working lumberjacks as trees are topped and “timberrr” rings out, and so much more. Her amazing descriptions place the reader right in the middle of it all.

When Love Comes My Way, even though an inspirational novel, does not sermonize or evangelize, but lets the reader have a vicarious experience with major characters whose deep, abiding Christian belief is part of the very fabric of their being. It is evidenced in their actions and in the debilitating sense of guilt that niggles at them when they fall short of what they know is acceptable for a true believer.

The relationship that grows with Jake and Tess keeps the reader turning pages. Ms. Copeland weaves their lives together with humorous actions, devious actions, subtle but compelling feelings and desires, and intriguing back story as she skillfully turns their differences around to mutual desire not just for each other, but also a desire to help people in the present and to do what will help generations to come.

The secondary characters are a hardy lot. The downtrodden young wife Echo–hers is a “not-to-miss” story; the “monster” school children—my word, made shudder to think about trying to teach those little “darlings”; the polite Andre Montague, Jake’s right hand man; Talbot, Tess’s guardian and fiancé, and many others all add a humanness to this delightful story that is hard to put down—kept me up late.

When Love Comes My Way is an exquisite love story set is a harsh environment. Ms. Copeland’s awesome writing style, her captivating characters, and wonderful descriptions make this a story to be read more than once.

Rachel Schmidt Nussbaum, a young widow, is now seven and a half months pregnant with her first child. She blames herself for her husband Josef’s death and she believes that she is being punished by God for her past sins.

So when a stranger arrives claiming to be an old friend from her wilder years, saying only she can fix things for him, for Josef, and for herself, she makes an impulsive decision to follow him. Thus begins a journey that will lead Rachel to the depths of ultimate danger, the potential for new love, and a battle that will decide both the fate of her soul and the life of her unborn child.

This story can inspire those for various cultures, ages, and backgrounds with its gripping plot lines and unique characters.

Rachel is a character that I sympathized with immediately. As a widow with child, I could not help but feel a pang of empathy for this soon-to-be mother. While she may seem like a quiet, young Amish woman on the outside, inside she has the heart of a lioness. She willingly sacrifices herself not only for those she cares about, but also for the beliefs that she has been taught since she was an infant. Even if God may have turned His back on her because of Rachel’s misdeeds in the past, she will do whatever it takes to maintain her moral standards and compassion for those around her. This really makes Rachel a remarkable heroine and one of the reasons this story kept me entertained.

Roc’s character was very intriguing because I never knew which end of the moral pendulum he would swing to next. As a vampire hunter, he had to make some tough decision that could get not only him but others killed. It also made him keep even his closest of friends at a distance since he knew he may have to be their judge, jury, and executioner in the future. This created a gruff man who can be difficult to care for. It also created a character that I wanted to continuously learn about. I could read a book based on his life experience alone because I know it would be full of excitement, heartbreak, and love. Yes, even the man who seems to care for little shows compassion and love, which furthered my infatuation with him.

The characters and plot lines of this story are extremely dynamic – so much so that in the beginning they seemed a bit overwhelming. Rachel and Roc’s past played a large role in their story and I sometimes felt like I was missing a few pieces to the puzzle. In the end, I was able to understand the whole story of both their individual pasts as well as the future they both hope to achieve.

The conflict within this story keeps the plot moving forward at a consistent pace. During a large section of the storyline the conflict supersedes the romantic development, but it also helps in bringing the main characters together. The author even allowed me to feel bad for Jacob a/k/a Akiva at times, which really demonstrated the author’s ability to create penetrating characters.

Ms. Ellis really gave me a glimpse into what might be the secret life of the Amish. I lived in a predominately-Amish area at one point in my childhood so this aspect is what initially drew me to the storyline. I was happy to see that the author keeps the Amish lifestyle as authentic as possible. It helped to make this book truly entertaining. There is nothing run-of-the-mill about this paranormal romance story and I am sure that anyone can find something about it they truly love.

One of the reasons I love Regency novels so much is they’re a fun and sometimes humorous read.

Despite this story having situations I’d seen before, it held my interest from start to finish. One reason for that was the heroine. It’s always fun to hear about the lead character through someone else’s viewpoint before you get to ‘meet’ them and I think that’s what worked so well with this story. She wasn’t your usual Regency young lady and her interaction with everyone along with her antics made for a humorous read.

I enjoyed the witty banter which is a must for this sub-genre and the many cast of characters that appeared throughout the story. The pacing was good and the author conveyed a good sense of this period in British history including some of the eccentric characters who frequent the pages of a Regency novel.

I’ll be looking for more historical titles by the author. If you’re a die-hard Regency fan, you won’t want to miss this one.

Full-figured Bess Simpson despairs — so many men on campus are turned off by “fat chicks.” Only one has caught her eye, but he’s always with the petite drum major. Bolstered by an encouraging best friend, Bess finds her math ability comes in handy — the man of her dreams needs a tutor.

Art Fuller wants to be a metallurgical engineer, but he must pass the Differential Equations class, and math is not his strong point. To make matters worse, the help session leader is no help, and dating the daughter of the department head isn’t getting him anywhere but henpecked, especially when he turns to Bess for some assistance.

Will Bess impress him beyond the subject at hand? Or is he unable to recognize her true value?

Bess Simpson, of Larry Hammersly’s Beautiful Inside and Out, is charmingly genuine and utterly believable. She’s a smart woman, but has a familiar sense of not being quite good enough due to her weight issues, that raises reader sympathies at once. Our hero, Art, is likable. He starts off seeming not all that desirable…but he’s a decent sort, for sure. For a moment there, we can almost imagine this taking the course of a rather predictable romance. Don’t worry, this is hardly the case!

Even with the college campus setting, the ensuing competition is a bit of a surprise and is immediately intriguing. In fact, the motivations of several people are something of a mystery. I can’t go further for fear of spoilers, but this story is unpredictable and characters intriguing. It’s a quick read and fun from beginning to end.

Unfortunately, stilted and overdone descriptions slow the pace unnecessarily. Whether it was word choice or phrasing, I can’t pinpoint the issue, but it makes me give this one just a whisker below a 4.

Beautiful Inside and Out is a worthwhile read though, with a wonderfully charming overall aura.

Thirty-something Joan Nelson has more to contend with than a biological clock or an identity crisis, for her husband of twelve years has fled. Despite her ardent belief in a conventional marriage, she finds herself deserted for a younger, slimmer woman. Lacking any skills or education, she’s thrust unprepared into the nightmare challenge of making a living for the first time in her sheltered existence.

A job as a receptionist in a law firm is the first rung on the ladder to her independence. Yet the taste of success sours when Joan considers the emptiness of her personal life. How can she reconstruct her damaged life and heal her bruised ego? Ill-equipped for the singles scene, she embarks on a confusing, sometimes frightening, lifestyle.

But when Joan stumbles on a crime perpetuated by a charming cad, she must defy her boss, jeopardize her newly won stability, and reject her friends. Her namesake, Joan of Arc, provides a model of courage and insight. If she risks danger and uncertainty, will she discover that independence and adulthood can be both enjoyable and fulfilling? Does optimism beat pessimism? Who would have dreamed her final victory could solve a childhood puzzle while it brings her true love?

Bubbling with humor and replete with growing pains of a divorced woman, A Saint Comes Stumbling In takes the reader on a vicarious journey with Joan Nelson. She goes from a stay-home wife with limited marketable skills, whose self image is in the cellar, to being a capable, confident, much loved lady. The zigs and zags, stumbles, falls, and scrambling back up to try again make the reader keep turning pages just to see what will happen next.

Joan’s obsession with Scott Clark, the young, handsome lawyer, sets her on a self-improvement phase that her friend Kevin organizes for her and helps her to stay on target. As they interact, the reader soon realizes Kevin has one agenda and Joan has another—fun to see how things evolve.

A few of the episodes in A Saint Comes Stumbling In are a little too-far-out, yet ridiculously funny. Overall the story is a rite of passage story about a “late-bloomer” who is slow to recognize her own worth and see the true love that’s been waiting in the wings for her to mature.

Bonnie McCune entertains with a special charm. She writes in first person that fits the self-centeredness of Joan at this stage in her life. The multitude of funny events, disasters, and the metamorphosis of Joan make the reader’s journey with her delightful. A Surefire Way to Jinx Your Future…

…is to perfectly map it out and then expect your journey to go as planned. Twenty-six year old home builder, Matthew Huntz, is on his way to making his dreams a reality—gorgeous fiancée, perfect job, and the house he’s always wanted. Until the accident. Paralyzed from the chest down, with his life’s GPS offline, Matt is forced to recalculate his path in life.

In A Life Worth Living, Lorrie Kruse shares a look at an ordinary man becoming exceptional – not because of injury, but largely through deciding on who and what he values most.

Matthew wakes to a different world…or perhaps, more correctly, as a different person, in a world he will see forever from a different perspective.

Matthew’s sweet, strong personality is evident at the outset. Any reader will quickly feel an emotional attachment to him. We soon grasp details of his history and understand him to be a good person… and yet, we are there at the start of his personal journey. His growth is partly from needing to cope, but also, from rising to meet challenges. His spinal cord injury changes his choices, but not who he is.

This story isn’t what you might expect; not at all. I set off, I admit, with trepidation because of the title. I thought this would be a story about disability, about heart-tugging yet predictable struggles and overcoming. Yet, it’s not: it’s neither predictable nor precious. Matthew’s injury doesn’t change the people around him: for example, it doesn’t make his girlfriend a better or more genuine person. He still has to work, and must cope with people who antagonize him, (in fact, the believability of characters, in general, contributes enormously to this work). Quality conversations move the story along and reveal a lot about various individuals. If I had one complaint, it’s about the total number of characters – some lesser players contribute little and might have been omitted.

Life and its various incidences are what change Matt, not his disability. It never forces him to become a different person, he decides that himself… and his choices bring him to second chances. Abby is a woman who understands disabilities — but more importantly, about the need for two people to be sincere.

This is Matthew’s story. It’s about his family and his dreams and his love. Ultimately, this is a wonderful and moving story that shares both disappointment and achievement, joy and pain.

Ms. Kruse has a straightforward writing style that makes for comfortable reading. She presents injury and life struggle details in a realistic (and perhaps uncompromising) manner. Do read.
