Kylie Jordan struggles to piece her damaged life back together following the senseless death of her sister at the hands of a drunk driver. She spearheads a grief support group at New Hope Church to ease the pain, and tends to the roadside cross placed in her sister’s memory. Mason Bennett yearns to make sense of the reckless actions that stole his brother’s life, as well as the life of an innocent victim. His pain leads him to New Hope Church–and Kylie Jordan. Kylie and Mason’s lives are woven together by a single, irrevocable moment in time. When the past is revealed, will their faith–and love–sustain them, or will Kylie’s fragile trust be forever shattered?

Kylie Jordan, a social worker, struggles to mend her broken life after the death of her sister a year earlier. The pregnant nurse was coming home from work when she was broad-sided by a drunk driver. Faith lingered on for three days, but the driver of the other car was killed instantly. Kylie erected a white cross where the accident occurred, and she passes it each time she goes to the grief support group she leads at her church.

Mason Bennett also lost a family member. His brother Braden died a year earlier when his out of control car hit another vehicle. Mason was a passenger and is haunted by guilt. He was sober and he should have prevented his brother from getting behind the wheel. Life hasn’t been easy for Mason, but he’s decided to attend a grief support group to see if that will help. He meets Kylie in the parking lot and instantly finds her appearance and manner appealing. After the meeting he lingers, helps her straighten the meeting room, then asks her out for ice cream.

As the days pass, Kylie and Mason find themselves enjoying one another’s companionship the first social enjoyment for either in a year. Mason is a civil engineer, and Kylie has a plan to construct a bridge over the creek near the church, then landscape the area with flowers and benches. She asks Mason if he’d like to help. Only when they’ve finished the project and have extra plants to use does he finally connect the lonely white cross with the name Faith written on it with Kylie. It seems both their lives are woven together by a tragic incident. Will their faith be the catalyst to begin the rebuilding process? Can they turn tragedy into hope?

Ms. Manners has penned a moving short story of faith, love and hope. While it’s hard to develop characters with any degree of depth in such a short piece, Manners has done a credible job. I enjoyed Wounded Faith very much.

Calley Regan only wants to get through her cousin’s bridal shower without anyone discovering her secret—she’s pregnant. Her sanctimonious family would never understand. Then the one person she confides in happens to tell the incredibly handsome, but seriously uptight, sheriff, Riley Owens—who’s just given her a speeding ticket! How can she trust the brooding, inflexible lawman when he’s everything she’s not? Riley Owens is instantly attracted to Calley Regan, but it won’t come to anything. For years, he’s lived mired in guilt, and carefree Calley is his polar opposite. But, when someone attacks Calley, Riley is determined to protect her no matter what it takes, and when her family deserts her, he takes Calley into his home. Years ago, he couldn’t save the woman he loved. He’s not about to let that happen again.

It’s bad enough when you find out that the attractive man you’ve been dating got you pregnant. It’s a lot worse when you find out he’s been married all along…

Ms. Bain gives you two main characters, Calley and Riley, who are independent and have no plans on getting involved again. Calley is still trying to get over the rat that got her pregnant, and Riley lost his fiancé in a bank robbery and doesn’t want to risk love again. This sets the stage for a lot of banter, a good batch of stubbornness and some antagonism on both sides. The author writes the dialogue realistically and makes the developing romance charming. The story begins with Calley throwing up on Riley’s shoes right after he gives her a ticket for speeding. She told him he needed to let her use the bathroom, but he ignored her. He deserved it.

The murder attempts are odd. Calley has no enemies and has blown off the baby’s father; she will raise the baby independently. The author writes a twisted tale that is strange enough to be true. I had no clue who the killer was until I was almost at the end of the story. Even then, I wasn’t sure how it was going to turn out.

Another interesting part of the plot is how Calley is treated by her family when they find out she’s pregnant. Her mother claims she’s a Christian, but she doesn’t act like one.

All in all, the author’s words flow well, the story is interesting and the romance blossoming is sweet. I enjoyed this read. Why not try it yourself and see if you can guess the murderer sooner than I did?

From This Day Forward
Christian Music agent Kellen Rossiter has everything he ever wanted: A-list clients from coast to coast, a loving wife who honors and respects him, and a faith life that’s never wavered—until now.

Juliet Rossiter has the perfect life: a rewarding schedule serving the underprivileged, a husband who loves her as Christ loved the church, and a blessed future as a mother—at least that’s what she thinks.

For Better or Worse
But what happens when their rock-solid marriage begins to crumble under the weight of an unexpected and powerful temptation? How does love survive when its foundation is shaken?

‘Til Death Do Us Part
When human frailty and the allure of sin deal a harsh blow to their relationship, it will take more than love to mend the shattered trust and heartbreak. It will take a lifetime of devotion.

Temptation hits what seemed to be a solid, Christian marriage…can they keep it together?

When a music agent has feelings for a young woman who isn’t his wife, and when he gives in enough to kiss her–a kiss that is observed and eventually gets back to his wife–what next?

Marianne Evans writes a book with a wonderful message of forgiveness.  This couple has a difficult path ahead, because a broken trust is difficult, and sometimes impossible, to overcome.   She takes us step-by-step as they try to work things out and rebuild their marriage. As they try to learn to trust again.

There’s another sticking point, as well.  I think the world feels Christians should be infallible.  I think Christians often feel that way as well.  So these two have to get past that; they must acknowledge they are human and sometimes make bad choices.

The author does a fine job of showing the reality of their lives after this happens.  Though the story does have its slow spots, it’s still uplifting, believable and not preachy.  It’s something that couples should read when they think their relationships are past saving.

For a book with a real message that will leave you filled with hope, I recommend Devotion.  It’s so very worth reading.

Lord Toby Allenby is very fond of women – perhaps a little too fond. His younger brother, Harry, conversely, has no intentions of even contemplating another relationship – ever.

So, when the boys’ Great Aunt Milly bequeaths the magnificent Diddington Hall to whichever of the pair marries first, Toby assumes the inheritance is his for the taking, providing, of course, he can find a suitable bride.

But add to the mix a scheming mistress, a murderous money lender, an ambitious strumpet, and a bookish accident-prone young lady completely terrified of men, and Toby’s finds his quest not quite as simple as he first supposed …

Where is the Diddington Diamond? Is there really a Diddington Diamond? Is it legend or truth? Either way the late Millicent Phoebe Venetia O’Hare of Diddington Hall uses it to influence matchmaking even beyond the grave. Her old solicitor Mr. Gerald Hinds does enjoy getting to be a part of and see the results of his old friends meddling.

Louisa Winchester of Hartley House in Diddlington had accepted her mother, Eliza Winchester’s philosophy that men “steal your heart then toss it aside like a worn boot”. Consequently, men should be avoided at all times. But when their lives get entangled with the Duke and Duchess of Wolsington family who now occupy Diddlington Hall, Louisa and Eliza find their regimented life style flies out the window.

Lord Tobias Allenby, Marquis of Yarm, and Harry, his younger brother, Earl of Stanford, the Duke and Duchess’ sons, expected to inherit Diddlington Hall from their great-aunt Millie. What they didn’t expect was the caveat she attached. Tobias, deep in gambling debts and involved with a strong-willed mistress, has no desire to get married, but he needs to if he is to get himself out of the mess he got himself into. While Harry’s Clare, the love of his life, died and he plans to never fall in love again. The idea of marriage is abhorrent to him. But he loves Diddlington Hall. Great-Aunt Millie does force the issue of growing up and accepting responsible on two idle young men—one seeking personal pleasure regardless of cost and the other wallowing in misery, refusing to live life since his Clare is dead.

The secondary characters that influence so much of the action are truly a mixed lot. Maria Dove, the house guest of Eliza and Louisa, is from Yorkshire and bent on finding a rich, important husband. My goodness, what a stir she causes. Her antics can be outrageous. What a startling climax and denouement to her story! Caroline, Tobias’ mistress, is another that lets her influence be felt with no holds barred. She knows what she wants and woe to anyone who gets in her way. Of course, the seemingly ever-present, helpful Viscount Winston and the late-on-the-scene Elizabeth Wilson play significant roles in their own quiet ways.

The subtle, often tongue-in-cheek, humor that ripples through The Diddington Diamond makes it a delight to read. The self-imposed misery of Lady Eliza Winchester is incredible to the point of laughable at times. Even Tobias’ misery, though deadly serious, is humorous at times as he tries to outwit his creditor and his mistress and still hang on to his inheritance. His plight begins to wear a little before it is resolved, but the quite unintentional connection Harry and Louisa make, as the catalogue books and search for the Diddington diamond, shines with humor, laughter and yes, love, giving the reader that special feeling that all is right with the world. The many happily-ever-after sub-stories don’t come easily but they do come with a satisfied sigh for the reader.

Wendy Burdess puts in some special little tidbits that add a unique touch to the story, like the pink and lilac butterfly, the places that nurture love, and one of the best is a little snippet in the epilogue that tickles the imagination. She writes in a delightful, entertaining style.

Carson Merrill loves only one thing more than Lone Creek Ranch—high school sweetheart Jessica Tate. He has plans to marry her, until one fateful night a devastating accident nearly kills her brother, James, and claims the use of his legs. Jessica flees to Nashville, blaming Carson for her brother’s paralysis, and avoids him—and James—for more than a year. Jessica returns to Lone Creek as one of the top producing land developers in the area, and she has one goal—to banish Carson forever from her memory while taking what he still loves—Lone Creek Ranch. But God has other plans—to draw the two together in a development project that will satisfy both their desires, and help them to reclaim the love they once shared.

An offer that should never have been made. Two wounded people. Two opposing objectives. Enemies or lovers…do they have a choice?

Lost in Lone Creek is a sweet and endearing love story with characters that are easy to warm up to. For Jessica, resentment and blame have been her dominant emotions for the past year. Emotions that caused her to close her heart toward the man she loved and to flee Lone Creek. And even though she’s returned, it’s for all the wrong reasons.

The story line of misunderstandings and lost chances is nothing new. And if there hadn’t been an outstanding feature that kept me reading to the end, I would have probably given this story three stars. However, author Mary Manners does an exceptional job with dialogue. Through that, and body language, she allowed me to know her characters more deeply. Showing is so much more effective than just telling because it lets me, the reader, shape this character in my mind, forging a strong bond that compels me to stay with that character until the end.

Another aspect of the author’s writing is her use of unique, descriptive language that gives her readers a new and fresh view of familiar scenes, objects, or character reactions. It’s not easy to describe a sunset or smile in a new way, but she manages to do that and more in Lost in Lone Creek.

If you’re looking for a read to fit into one of those brief moments of private time, the length of this story will work well, not only that, you’ll also come away with having found two new friends in Jessica and Carson. And don’t forget, this is just one of the stories in the Lone Creek Ranch Series.

Retired Staff Sergeant Seth Roberts returns to Summerville to begin the next chapter of his life. To do that, he needs to find out why his girlfriend married another man more than twenty years ago while he served in the Persian Gulf. Their high school reunion is the perfect place to confront Elyse Jordan.

Determined to be a strong role model for her daughters, Professor of Feminist Theory Elyse Jordan never talks about the loss of her only love twenty years ago. Caring for her mother during cancer treatment brings Elyse back to Summerville, the one place she avoided after Seth’s death. When an invitation to her twenty-fifth reunion arrives, she decides to go and reconnect with lost friends. She never imagines she’ll come face-to-face with Seth instead.

Can Seth and Elyse find the thread of love that bound them together or will past tragedies and misunderstandings keep them apart?

Over twenty years have been lost due to false reports, misconceptions, anger and lies. Can these two put away the ghosts of the past and grab a hold of their future?

The Class of ’85 series is a wonderful concept. It’s dated perfectly with my own age and I get a chuckle out of remembering way back when. This story centers on a newly retired military man, Seth Roberts and his lost love, Elyse Jordan.

Seth was devastated when he found out the woman he loved had not only married another person, but was having twins. This set him on a course of becoming a lifetime military man and to never return to his hometown of Summerville. Upon retiring from the military, he decides that enough time has passed, and is ready to spend his retirement years with family and friends. He decides to return home and renovate his family’s lakeside home.

The man of her dreams has just been killed in Afghanistan. Elyse decides to leave the pain behind and she forges a new life away from all she knows. Mother of twin girls, she is happy but not content in life. She is forced to return home to Summerville every weekend to take care of her mother who has cancer. Elyse is ready to move on, is intrigued by the reunion and wants to reconnect with her old school mates.

Seth wants closure from the past and to find out what happened and why. Elyse is about to be broadsided with new revelations that will change her life forever. The reconnection scene is heartbreaking, emotions run high and the passion is still very obvious.

I enjoyed Ms. Tyler’s writing style and the idea with the story. The problem I have is that this book was too short for such a complex plot. It is a brilliant concept for a story and I wanted to bury myself in it, but then it was over. This plot had the makings to be a brilliant novel, but writing it as a short story doesn’t do it justice. I would personally beg and plead with the publishers to allow Ms. Tyler to be able to continue this story. For twenty plus years of angst to be resolved in basically one weekend was a bit unbelievable. There is a little treasure to be had if this story was permitted to be expanded and continued.

I do plan on checking out other books from Leanne Tyler. She obviously has the ability to weave a intricate and romantic tale. She seems to be a true gem.

With his heart on the line will it be fight…or flight?

Dr. Court Armstrong is running from the past, a flight that takes him straight to the doorstep of a Ghanaian hospital and Nurse Maggie Everett. Working with firebrand Maggie is a challenge Court relishes every second of, but he’s in her world now—and he’ll have to keep his distance if he wants his heart to survive intact….

The oppressive heat, the urgency, then the tingle and heart jump as a “fine-looking specimen” of an American man steps off the plane in Ghana, West Africa reels the reader into a compelling story of a place far from the comforts of America, but a place that owns Maggie’s heart. She’s needed and appreciated there.

Dr. Court Armstrong is CEO of Armstrong Foundation in Boston, the group that turned down Maggie’s request for aid for the hospital here in Ghana. Court arrives with some special equipment for the hospital. He is hardly there long enough to catch his breath of the heated air of Ghana before “Missy Maggie” has him operating to save a life. Her bossy, no-nonsense approach to tending the sick gets his attention. He has stopped practicing because of some devastating past events that he blames himself for. Even though his bedside manner is terrible, Maggie needs his help and she hopes to show him how much the aid they asked for is needed.

Maggie, a perspiration-soaked, no make-up, workaholic, fascinates Court. Her love for the Mamprusi people and especially for little Neetie amazes him. She is a little dynamo with many facets to her personality that she keeps well hidden.

The secondary characters, other than Neetie, are pretty much in the background and are used mostly to propel the story along as Court and Maggie overcome past traumas, work together to tend the sick while struggling to find where their priorities really are. Learning not to be stymied by what is past and cannot be changed and to live in the present and plan for the future, happens slowing as they fight the elements in Ghana to keep Neetie alive and come to terms with life in Boston. Each must find his / her own heart’s deepest need before they can commit to the poignant love that makes them complete.

Susan Carlisle engaging writing style brings alive the culture of the Mamprusi people, the weather, harsh living conditions in Ghana, and the struggle to meet medical needs of the people. The Nurse He Shouldn’t Notice throbs with life as Ms. Carlisle’s descriptions tantalize the senses. Heat, rain, mud, storms, smells, sounds add to tensions and fears in many of the scenes. Ms. Carlisle creates an unbreakable emotional connection between Maggie and Court even though their worlds seem vastly different. Her love scenes and compelling way with special words and acts reach out and touch the heart. Good Reading!

Dr Ruby Valentine is horrified when she discovers her new colleague is adventurer — and embarrassing teenage crush — Hamilton Goldmark. Homebody Ruby tries to convince herself that this handsome daredevil is off-limits, but she’s torn — giving into temptation is terrifying, but letting Hamilton slip through her fingers could be even worse…

A kiss that didn’t happen still embarrasses twenty-eight-year-old Dr. Ruby Valentine. Now the very man who didn’t kiss her is to be her clinic partner while his cousin Dr. Brandon Goldmark is on leave nursing a broken heart. She reasons that she’s no longer a traumatized teenager but is now a “take-charge, get-the-job-done doctor” in the little town of Lewisville in the Outback that loves her and supports her. She even has Geoffrey, a steady boyfriend, a good man who serves the community as a policeman and dotes on her.

Dr. Hamilton Goldmark, Mr. Adventurous, still makes Ruby’s heart race, but she wants stability with home, husband and children, children that she can love, nurture, and heed their needs. She still suffers from her parents’ lack of concern for her as they dragged her from one get-rich scheme to another, all the time arguing with each other. As a matter of fact, events from her past seem to pretty much rule her present and her plans for the future to excess.

Hamilton has his own baggage from the past about family and relationships. His past is quite different than Ruby’s, it still controls much in his decision making for the present and the future. He does not want a permanent relationship but he finds Ruby breathtaking. She’s charming, sweet, intelligent, practical, caring, brave, and sends his body into overdrive. But her goals and his are miles apart.

As these two work together, their attraction to each other grows. Professionally they are a perfect fit. But they are stymied. They continue to let the past rule—which slows the story for me at times. It takes a life-threatening event for things to come clear so they can live in the now and look to the future rather than always looking to the past.

The culture of the Outback, the extremes of the weather, and the unique secondary characters, their humor, eccentricities, and sense of community, give the reader a touch of Australia. Surviving and thriving in the Outback takes courage, common-sense, and lots of working together.

Ruby and Hamilton’s happy-ever –after promises to be full of adventure and stability because love finds a way to make dreams come true.

Home. Samantha Carleton dreams of such a wonderful place, somewhere permanent, somewhere safe to simply be herself. Her life wasn’t easy by any measure, always to her knees in creeks and mud, hot on the trail of the next gold nugget. Danger lurked in her day-to-day existence, her well-being dependent upon the rough miners and greedy outlaws they encountered believing her to be a teenage boy.

Ever since she budded into a beautiful young woman, Sam’s pa has dressed her as male to keep her from unwanted attention. But when his love of whiskey causes him to ramble on about his ‘son’ Sam’s keen ability to locate gold, she finds herself taken hostage by the worst kind of lowdown criminals.

When Sheriff Trace Wallace goes undercover to find out who’s been jumping claims, he overhears a plan cooked up by two lazy greenhorn outlaws to kidnap and enslave an older boy to pan for them. Rather than see the kid who is labeled a menace about town placed in jeopardy, he offers his help in bringing Sam to heel.

But Sam is no picnic to handle and in their many struggles Trace soon discovers the unruly boy is in fact a beautiful but tough woman who not only helps him bring in the bad guys, but also ensnares his heart.

Whether it’s claim-jumpers, snakes, or a troublesome sheriff with a killer smile, Sam’s just the girl who can handle them all…

How do you get a drunken father out of a saloon? With a beehive, of course! At least that’s Sam’s solution. And so begins a very uniquely written story that overflows with wonderful dialogue and humor. I was hooked on this story in the first ten pages because of Sam. She’s a fun and feisty young lady that is always jumping off the deep end of trouble.

Author Terri Crews keeps the plot moving at a brisk pace with plenty of evil characters bent on stealing Sam’s gold. On the side of Justice is sheriff Trace Wallace who is equally determined to save Sam despite the opposition she gives him, not to mention, the well placed kick and the smack across the jaw she subjects him too. Enjoy these little snippets of dialogue and action.

“I need you to do as you’re told, Sam, as a part of the deal. I’m to see to you and I’m telling you now, obey me without argument, understand? I’ll be expected to tan your hide if you don’t and I will if I have to, so don’t make me.” ~Page 47

As soon as he turned his back, he heard her feet hit the floor. He turned just as she plowed headfirst into him. ~Page 171

A visit to the Highland games goes awry for Alasdair Buchanan when his cousin abandons him in the crowd. His guide dog is terrible at describing the sights, but he does a great job of finding the river. Too bad Alasdair has no clue where that river is in relation to his cousin’s apartment.

When Trisha Wright stops to speak with him in her angelic voice, Alasdair is certain his cousin did him a favor by abandoning him. Trisha loves the Scot’s flirtatious ways and basks in his compliments, but she can’t shake the fear that he’ll hate her when he learns the truth about her—a truth everyone can see but him.

What can a blind man do when his unreliable cousin abandons him in the middle of a Highland Games festival? Should he follow a woman who has a beautiful voice?

Alasdair Buchanan was blinded in an accident a few years ago and has acquired a helpful guide dog, Foster. However, attending a festival requires more than a guide dog to help him find where he needs to go, especially since it’s only his third day in America. Trisha Wright happened to find him and Foster in front of a river and decided to help him out. She is actually glad that he can’t see because she doesn’t want him to view what has scared everyone else off. Trisha, a graphic designer, has the ability to describe with wonderful detail what is going on around them. However, she does so without being overly verbose, intrusive, or condescending, making Alastair enjoy himself immensely in her company.

I enjoyed this little story so much that I wanted to be the one who got to try the food at the festival! I loved the descriptions of surroundings much more than in most stories since I was trying to get what Alasdair was experiencing. One of the things that really intrigued me was finding out the reason Trisha was worried about Alasdair finding out about her face. The words of wisdom that came out of this story definitely made me contemplate about things in life. Ms. West has a wonderful way with words, spinning a tale so interesting that I couldn’t believe I was already done with the story when it ended.
