Funny, romantic, intriguing, and highly entertaining, MANHATTAN SWEETHEART finds author Jay Fingers in top form as he delivers yet another witty, insightful, and playfully observant look at the beautiful people of New York City.

She’s a sweetheart, but she’s not what she seems.

This is definitely a look at the beautiful people of New York. There were times I felt like I was right there in the action. I wanted to see those parties and feel like I had gone along with the characters.  The author does a great job with his descriptions.  This isn’t a big book and reads rather quickly. It’s written in a snappy manner, so it’s easy to follow–for the most part. I had to reread a few parts, but nothing enough to deter me from continuing.

Persephone did annoy me at times. The woman is pretty much perfect and I had a hard time relating to her. I wanted her to have some faults, but I understood why she wasn’t going to show them.

The writing is snappy, like I said. Once I started the book, I read it in one sitting.  If you want a glimpse into the beautiful life, then this might be the book for you.

Single mom Missy Monroe brings her kids to the lodge, too. Lalla wants a grandma for Christmas, and her brother, Carlos, wants a dog. Missy can’t provide either one. What she’d like is an attractive, dependable man. A man like John Truman… But John’s girlfriend will be joining him in Icicle Falls, and he’s going to propose.

The Lodge on Holly Road reads like a holiday soap opera with nothing but happy endings for the main protagonists. It’s a feel good read that fits in with the theme of the season.

Not that it’s all fluff and cotton candy. Human emotions, expectations and assumptions not to mention life’s dismal realities do tend to give this novel a depth and richness. Most of the heroes and heroines have to overcome issues in order to find the happiness they all hope for in some part of their hearts. It’s getting there and how Ms. Roberts navigates the tricky personalities of her characters that made this book an entertaining read.

Like with most soap operas, there are one or two main plots that are highlighted with some background mini plots filling out the tableau, and somehow, they are all interconnected because for a week’s time, everyone is together in a very close setting. Not one character remains untouched by what goes on at the lodge.

There are those that start out like Scrooge but in the end show that they are marshmallows inside – while denying it the entire time. There are single moms and dutiful sons, grief and loss and new beginnings. There are kids on the cusp of not believing in Santa and adults who desperately want what the message of the season inspires. There are rich and poor, both in money and in spirit. Ms. Roberts covered all the bases, making The Lodge on Holly Road a busy but thoroughly engaging read.

The one that stood out to me, and I think that was the point, was John Truman. Every single time he did a monologue about his girlfriend, I knew, just knew where it was heading. I also had hopes, which the author gave plenty of hints that it was not in vain, as to whom he’d eventually turn to. The fact that the other lodgers noticed his plight somehow became the glue that touched every other character in the novel in some way and bound them together. His tale may not have started the story right away, but once he was on stage, I could see most of the plot threads being influenced by his actions and his presence.

There are too many heroes and heroines to go through in a review but I’d say they were all well done. The only one I was least impressed with was the romance of Brooke and Eric. Yes, it was sweet and happy but it didn’t have the detail nor was it as fleshed out as it could have been to convince me of their falling in love. I think the author was all about the “feel good” aspect of the story and if that was her aim, she was on target. Nothing wrong with that.

If readers are in the mood for a book that embodies the warmth, love and heart of the holiday season, especially Christmas, then look no further than The Lodge on Holly Road. It reads like a yummy dessert, with a crunchy outside and delicious multilayered gooey goodness inside. It’s a treat that I recommend for all readers who want a simple but busy character driven romance. The theme might be Christmas but at heart is a universal love story.

Sometimes danger is hard to see… until it’s too late.

Britt Pfeiffer has trained to backpack the Teton Range, but she isn’t prepared when her ex-boyfriend, who still haunts her every thought, wants to join her. Before Britt can explore her feelings for Calvin, an unexpected blizzard forces her to seek shelter in a remote cabin, accepting the hospitality of its two very handsome occupants—but these men are fugitives, and they take her hostage.

In exchange for her life, Britt agrees to guide the men off the mountain. As they set off, Britt knows she must stay alive long enough for Calvin to find her. The task is made even more complicated when Britt finds chilling evidence of a series of murders that have taken place there… and in uncovering this, she may become the killer’s next target.

But nothing is as it seems in the mountains, and everyone is keeping secrets, including Mason, one of her kidnappers. His kindness is confusing Britt. Is he an enemy? Or an ally?

The intense setting of the book, in the middle of a snowstorm on a trip up into the mountains gets this story going. The excitement never stops, whether it’s dealing with an annoying ex-boyfriend or a new handsome stranger, and the overlying threat of freezing or dying at the hands of her captors keeps the protagonist on her toes and the reader turning pages.

I struggled with the back and forth with the friendship between Korbie and Britt. It didn’t seem genuine nor did it seem deep, as Korbie is one of the most self-centered, bratty girls I’ve ever read about, and Britt is an “independent” spoiled, (and frequently stupid) rich girl who can’t seem to get over her douche bag ex-boyfriend.

Then you have their trip up into the mountains, where they end up getting stranded because Britt didn’t want to pump more gas into the car and then the idea of staying in their fully stocked car with extra food/sleeping bags/gear was less attractive than stumbling around in a massive snowstorm just to maybe find some sort of help in a huge, unknown area of a mountain range.

I think the author wanted the readers to find the two men they find attractive, but I found them creepy.   I really hated the Stockholm syndrome going on…though I liked that relationship than the lost one Britt continues to pine over.  Still, it was disturbing.

Speaking of pining, Britt constantly is thinking about old “cute” memories of her and Calvin together, which distracts from the whole plot line and is annoying. Though it’s not much of a love triangle per se, it just wasn’t necessary. There was plenty of conflict without it and it got to the point where I just wanted to shake her and scream: PICK ONE.

Before you think I hated the book … I didn’t. There was enough action and excitement to keep me needing to find out what happened.  And the
epilogue made everything worthwhile.  It had more character development and true friendship than happened in the entire book.

I’m in the targeted age group for this book, so am writing from that point of view, and I wouldn’t give it to anyone under 13 because of the lusting, and (rather creepy) thoughts and actions with both of the men that Britt LOVES to DEATH and the gory details that describe dead bodies found along with a little language.

Honestly, Black Ice was painfully, horribly interesting.

The Tumble Inn is a moving drama about home and about the fragility and resilience of love.

Mark’s the only narrator in this book but we get a well-rounded view of both him and Fran.

I think anyone reading this will relate to them. Stuck in a job they’re not entirely thrilled about and given the opportunity to do something completely different. Something they’re not really qualified to do but decide to go for it and never look back.

The author did a wonderful job describing the inn that Fran and Mark run and also the surrounding area. I felt like I was there. The secondary characters are wonderful too. You’re happy for this couple when their daughter Nat comes into their life. I did, however, wish the author would have added some more chapters about her and her growing up at the inn instead of using narration to chronicle the years between her being an infant to a troubled teenager.

There’s a sad spot in the book which I won’t give away. It’s a turning point for the characters and you’re drawn further into the story. I loved the ending which gives you that (as all good books should) feeling that you’re glad you took time to read it.

If you’re normally a genre reader don’t let the literary tag on this story put you off. It’s fast paced and Mr. Loizeaux has an easy to read writing style. I’d say add The Tumble Inn to your fall reading list. I know I’ll be looking for more of this author’s work.

Detective First Grade Zach Jordan and his new partner–and ex-girlfriend–Detective Kylie MacDonald are assigned to the case. The killer has every murder, every escape, planned down to the last detail–and he’s scripted an explosive finale that will bring New York and Hollywood to its knees. With larger-than-life action, relentless speed, and white-knuckle twists, NYPD RED is a mega-blockbuster from “The Man Who Can’t Miss.” (TIME)

Zach Jordan, member of the elite NYPD Red, a team of special officers who cater to New York’s richest and most elite members of society, is waiting on his new partner to arrive. When he discovers that it’s the one person he never stopped loving, he realizes that his work is really cut out for him. Unfortunately, he’s not getting much time to dwell on the fact that he’s now partnered with his ex-girlfriend because someone is picking off celebrities one by one. Will his new partner be up to the task or will she fall just short of her goal?

Detective Zach Jordan is the kind of detective I’ve come to love. Handsome but not arrogant, good at his job, but never one to brag. He’s the perfect type of cop to deal with pampered celebrities and trust fund kids. But he’s more than that, too. He’s a genuinely good guy who only wants to do his job and find a good woman to keep him company. Zach’s internal struggle with partnering with his ex-girlfriend and one true love is endearing and a bit saddening, simply because he’s the kind of boy you bring home to mama. That he even goes out of his way to be nice to his partner Kylie’s husband only solidifies his good guy status.

Kylie MacDonald is used to being the best at everything. First in her class at the academy, eager and ready to dive right in, she wastes no time getting into the thick of it. You’d think that would make her a good cop, but in my opinion, it really didn’t. It made her reckless and a bit annoying, honestly. She comes off as a bit too perfect and when she starts going against regulation to save someone, there are zero repercussions. I had a difficult time trying to figure out what Zach might have seen in her.

Despite my issues with Kylie, I still really loved this book. I’ve long been a fan of James Patterson’s work. From the very first novel, I was hooked by his writing style and the way he was able to write from a female perspective so well. In addition to Zach, whom I loved, the precinct’s psychologist is a wonderful, charming woman, and I hope we get to know more about her in NYPD Red 2. As added bonuses for me, James Patterson’s novels are well-written, intriguing mysteries that are always a fast, enjoyable read. I’d highly recommend them to anyone who loves a thrilling ride.

There’s something about her that makes him believe she’s the one. Unfortunately, Shelly’s kickboxing instructor, Lance—Christian’s best friend—has set his sights on the sweet blonde as well.

Instead of pistols at dawn, the two friends come up with a deliciously erotic answer to their shared dilemma—if the shy beauty will accept their racy proposal.

This is an absolutely amazing story. Before I elaborate further I would really like to say it one more time: Amazing story. Although it is relatively short it is perfectly written, without loose ends, everything here is in its place.

Never Been Kissed is story about Shelly MacIsaac and her relationship with two wonderful, but a bit different, men. One is, her colleague and IT expert, Christian and the other is her trainer, kickboxing instructor and Christian’s friend, Lance. The relationship between three of them started as interesting friendship only to turn into intimate sexual relationship. But what makes this story different from so many erotic romances that I read is that before they became intimate they fell in love. Their love is palpable, as well as erotic/ sexual tension between the three of them. And that is what makes this story so sensual and so beautiful.

Everything in Never Been Kissed is amazing. The characters are equally developed. Each one of them has its own character arch and each realized something by the end of the story, something that makes him/ her a better person. The relationship between three of them is also amazingly written, it goes step by step, there is no rush, and what is the most important, all the sex scenes are an integral part of this threesome relationship because through them the author is also showing the progress of this interesting relationship. Sex scenes are highly sensual, magnificently written and, oh, so hot.

I also like the positive message of this story; and that is love your body and enjoy sex with the partner(s) you love.

Reading Never Been Kissed was an amazing experience for me. I highly recommend this story.

It has been nearly two years since the events in The Strings of the Violin, and Carrie has adjusted to life as a university student far from her friends. However, when the path to Hadariah is sealed, she starts to fear malevolent forces may be behind the other strange occurrences around her. After trying to contact Lindsay and Rebecca to get help in unraveling the mystery, Carrie discovers that her friends are in fact missing. With no way of knowing who to trust, Carrie must find a way back to the land she once saved to rescue her friends from the dybbuks’ clutches. Reuniting with the dybbuk princess Emilia, and finding a new friend in the mysterious farmer Mikhail, Carrie must once again do battle with Asmodeus’s forces, and help stop the chaos that threatens to overtake the land while striving to save both Lindsay and Rebecca. For the first time, Carrie is working without the two friends who have helped her through every major decision in her life. Carrie must learn to rely on herself, and find her own strengths to save those she holds dear.

Carrie can’t understand why no one seems to remember her best friends, Lindsay and Rebecca. Her parents try to convince her that those names belong to the imaginary friends she had when she was little. Her college friends have no memory of Carrie’s ever talking about them or their visits to her at college. Has the whole world gone mad? Is Carrie all alone now? When her supposed stalker turns out to be Mikhail, a guard sent by the dybbuk princess, Emilia, to protect Carrie after Rebecca and Lindsay have been kidnapped, Carrie demands information and soon, she is back in the land of Hadariah trying to rescue her friends.

The action is fast-paced and very exciting. Carrie, Emilia, and Mikhail run into one adventure after another and the rescuing of her friends soon looks like an impossible task. The three of them work well together, each bringing a particular skill or perspective.

My only complaint is that I found the dialogue to be rather unnatural and wooden at times. I found myself saying more than once that a person would never have said something. The dialogue just doesn’t always ring true, and it doesn’t help to build the tension and excitement.

This is the second novel, following The Strings of the Violin, and I certainly hope that a third novel will be forthcoming very soon as I want to know what happens next. This novel ends at a reasonable stopping point, but certainly the story is far from over.

Fantasy lovers will find a lot to enjoy in this novel as Carrie has to stand on her own and lead the rescue mission. She holds her friends’ lives in her hands. Will she succeed in saving them?

For that, she’s going to need a whole new team of vampire wardens to help round up the perpetrators, who turn out to be a gang that makes Sons of Anarchy look like toddlers on tricycles.

Her quest across the city brings old friends and enemies out of the woodwork and reminds Secret once and for all why mercy and forgiveness are not always prudent. Lives will be lost, sacrifices will be made, and when the dust settles, nothing will ever be the same again.

With no time to mourn her losses, the only question remaining is if Secret can survive long enough to stop the apocalypse…or if this is the one challenge that will finally drown her in rivers of undead blood.

Everything was supposed to be better now. For Secret McQueen, life should have finally been good; she had one man she was committed to, her two most dangerous enemies were dead and she was ready to settle down with her sweetie and live a relatively normal life. But when they got back to New York, they found the city burning, and the dead were walking all over town. Now Secret has to face the greatest challenge of all, stop the people trying to destroy the city, save her friends and stay alive herself. Can Secret find new allies to battle against the threat facing the city? Will everyone survive this one? Will Secret finally have her happy ever after with the man she loves, or is fate still against her?

A Secret to Die For is the final offering in Sierra Dean’s intriguing series featuring wolf shifters, vampires and ordinary people working to keep humanity safe and live their lives. This is a complex and intriguing world, where anything can, and often does, happen, and people are real and likeable and feel like old friends. I have been with Secret from the beginning, and enjoyed watching her grow and mature into the adult she has become, and it has been quite the journey.

Secret has finally made her decision on the man she wants to spend the rest of her life with, and she is ready and willing to ‘settle down’ and follow her heart. She is also sad to know that she hurt a friend, and that it may take a while for him to be friends with her without romance. I like this adult Secret, and I was glad to see she was still ready and willing to take care of business to save ‘her’ city, using old allies and making a few new alliances along the way. There were some very tearful moments as two people close to her did not survive this last disaster, and I was surprised at who proved themselves in the final battle as well.

This one has the usual cast of characters: Desmond, Secret’s werewolf lover, Holden Chancery, her vampire lover and mentor, Secret’s two human friends Mercedes and Tyler, and Secret’s sister. All of them, along with Lucas and Keaty, make appearances here, and the battles to defeat the evil necromancers were all well fought and coordinated. There were some major characters lost in this one, and a final surprise that I did not expect, but I found this to be a totally satisfying finale to Secret McQueen’s story. I highly recommend this series for anyone who enjoys some conflict with their happy ever after, but be warned…there are lots of tears in this one, so bring more than one box of tissues.

What do about it is the second conflict and the main one that provides all the entertainment for a reader.

Things are very science fiction-ish in this tale. Saber is operating a space resort – or trying to. The first few chapters is spent setting up the world building and introducing a reader to the lingo, the issues and challenges, and the main players that will initially surround and help or hinder the hero, Saber. That includes the heroine, Eva, who is not of Earth but another planet altogether. Her planet has its own challenges and amazingly enough, greed and dysfunctional family squabbles follow human nature even into space. The heroine’s issues present a third conflict for a reader to enjoy. There’s no shortage of adventures, suspense or drama in this novel. Saber has his hands full in trying to woo and win his reluctant mate.

I was a bit overwhelmed in the beginning because of all the unfamiliar terms. My reading time slowed considerably because I spent time digesting the newness of the words, their meaning and their effect on the main protagonists. Once that was out of the way, the author focused on what she does so well – her characters and the romance. Once Saber and Eva are alone in the uninhabited part of the island, the tale became about him and her and their growing relationship provides the most entertainment value. Saber may have teeth and claws at times but there’s something on the island that has talons 100% of the time and it’s scary. I liked that. There are a couple of other surprises too that I felt were a nice touch. One was blue and the other hot with vegetables. You’ll have to read it to find out what I’m talking about.

One aspect of books by Ms. Munro is the smoking hot sex that her characters experience between the pages. Readers will find many opportunities to use their personal fans as they follow the growth of Eva and Saber’s physical attraction and culmination – numerous times. Erotic fans should be very satisfied. Obviously not as replete as Saber and Eva however, especially with that scene in the hut. Whoa!

I know in the blurb it mentions how reluctant Eva is to stay with Saber. That’s an understatement. She makes some rather poor choices that I felt were totally stupid. What saves it is Saber. He let her know that they were stupid and then he chose action to express his viewpoint. It was very effective and another bit of hot writing. Ultimately, Eva regained my respect because she stepped back and realized something. She was CHOSEN. For her, that is absolutely huge and a pivotal moment. Readers will only understand how profound that is once they’ve read the story. I liked her best at that crucial scene. It made what came after real, hopeful and it justifies my belief in their happy ever after.

There are also plenty of humorous scenes, dialogue and interaction so the drama of survival is mitigated by the lighthearted banter and silly things Eva says. The author made me smile many times as I read the book.

Erotic romance readers should find a lot to like and enjoy in Snared by Saber. Ms. Munro consistently provides her fans with stories of love on the wild side, however this novel is a bit more wild than usual. I really liked it and would definitely recommend it to readers. I especially enjoyed the sci-fi aspect of it as it provided something refreshing and out of the ordinary for me. Sometimes, cats in space are a very good thing.

Workaholic werewolves have such awesome perks.

Just ask Aribella Lupari, whose hectic schedule tracking missing people in the snowy Adirondacks allows her benefits humans can’t appreciate—wolves never return unopened wedding gifts, never gain weight from late night doughnut binges, and never worry over their encroaching uni-brow. For Ari, walking upright is overrated.

Can the big, bad wolf live happily ever after, DESPITE THE FANGS?

Is Mason everything he claims to be, or will Ari’s heart be broken again?

Ari certainly is an interesting character. She is prickly and likable all at the same time. Her bravado and foul mouth is matched only by her enormous appetite. I found myself chuckling over her behavior several times as I read. Despite her harsh exterior, all Ari really wants is a happy ending. Unfortunately, a disastrous engagement years ago has permanently put Ari off all things romantic, or so she thinks. When Ari crosses paths with Mason, he awakens feelings in her she thought were long dead. However, Ari has a feeling that Mason isn’t being entirely truthful with her. As I watched Ari and Mason’s story unfold, I couldn’t help but wonder if Mason was the hero, or a cleverly disguised villain.

Ari and Mason have great chemistry and an intense connection that leads to some sizzling love scenes. Ari finds Mason’s scent to be intoxicating, and she literally craves his touch. However, there are trust issues always lurking just under the surface. Consequently, I had a hard time getting in to their romance. While Ari never gets the feeling that Mason is lying, he certain is leaving things out. Mason’s behavior always made me question his motives. For a man who claims to be in dire need of help to rescue his son, he seems to be taking his sweet time about it. As a parent, I know I would be an absolute wreck if someone took my child from me. While it is clear that Mason is concerned for his son’s well being, he certainly doesn’t seem to be as desperate as he claims. This should have been a red flag for Ari, but she keeps pushing aside her instincts in favor of trusting a man she really doesn’t know. While some of my misgivings were proven true, I’m happy to report my worst suspicions were not. I do think that certain plot points needed more explanation. When I finished reading, I still had questions about how much Mason planned in advance as well as questions about a sensitive state Ari finds herself in at the end of the book.

I really enjoyed Ms. Newton’s take on werewolves. Instead of glamorizing shape shifters, Ms. Newton chose to show cases the strengths and weaknesses of both the animal and human forms of her characters. This really grounded her story and helped make her characters believable.

I had fun reading Despite the Fangs. Ari is an entertaining heroine, and I found it easy to cheer for her. Does the werewolf get her happy ending? Read Despite the Fangs to find out.
