Betrayed by their lover, Maribeth and Zander struggle to find balance in a relationship that’s just the two of them. As the only human in the household, Maribeth tries to take a more active role in helping the vampires, while Zander is focused on revenge. It isn’t until warm, easygoing Graham catches their attention that their passion is rekindled, and they come together to seduce the big vampire.

Unfortunately, their traitorous ex isn’t done with them. Drew has joined their greatest enemy—an Eastern bloodsucker who is determined to take over power and enslave the area’s humans. He uses his knowledge of both the Human Rebellion and the master vampires’ household to play games and pit everyone against one another. After Drew orchestrates the assassination of one of their own, Zander isn’t the only one gunning for him.

Can revenge heal betrayal? Or will an unlikely romance give Zander, Maribeth, and Graham the strength they need to take on an adversary who knows their secrets?

Sometimes getting your tail kicked is the best way to get your eyes opened to what’s right in front of you. It worked for Zander, anyway.

This is the fifth book in the Vampire Territory series. I haven’t read the others but the author gave enough backstory to understand what was going on without it being an info dump weighing down this story. I picked up on the fact that what had been a seemingly happy triad was down to a struggling duo and one of those two, Zander, was carrying the weight of guilt for the loss, or betrayal, of their third.

I liked both Zander and Maribeth just fine when I first met them. I could feel that something was off or missing and that neither of them knew how to fix it. When they get the idea to seduce Graham, that’s when their relationship really got interesting. Graham is big-ole-teddy-bear vampire, honorable and precious and he’s obviously attracted to Maribeth. I have to wonder if he was already attracted to her before Drew’s betrayal and just didn’t act on it? I bet there were clues in the prior books.

The seduction, oh man! These two aren’t subtle. Graham didn’t know what hit him but he didn’t seem to mind, either. At the same time, I appreciated the fact that he didn’t accept their invitation lightly. While there is some light MM touching and interaction, there isn’t MM intercourse in this book. Graham says he isn’t interested in “back door” action but Zander seems pretty persuasive. I’m betting it happened at some point. I’ll just have to use my imagination.

The underlying story in these books is the human Rebels vs. the good vampires vs. the evil vampires. There are several skirmishes as well as bigger battle scenes. The author did a good job of making me like the band of vampires that Zander and Graham belonged to. The Rebels seem to be misguided and maybe even being led to hate the vampires even more as part of a bigger plot. There is some closure to part of the story in this book but it isn’t finished by far. The sad truth is that there’s always casualties in war. That part made me sad. Poor Rivers.

There are appearances from many of the couples that made up the prior books, I looked them up, as well as some still single vampires that sound very interesting. I’d like to read Kody’s story. He just sounds like a charming and yet smart-alecky brat. I love seeing those types get tamed.

Readers in the mood for a good vampire paranormal should check into this series. It’s a little dark because of the war going on but there’s some light moments as well, plus the love and of course the sex. That’s good, too. I’ll be watching to see if Kody does get a book as well as Rivers. I want her to be happy again.

The Light of Hidden Flowers is a deeply felt story of accepting who we are while pushing our boundaries to see how much more we can become. It’s a reminder that it’s never too late to pursue our dreams.

Jennifer Handford’s The Light of Hidden Flowers is a contemporary novel about living life, or more being willing to risk living life.

“Count your blessings” are words to live by for Melissa Fletcher. She likes her well-arranged life well enough. She works for her father, but not under his thumb, as a valued team member. However, she hits a bump in her well-ordered path when her father develops Alzheimer’s. This ‘bump’ jars her from her well-ordered course. This ‘bump’ is in fact, the start of her living…

Characters are the heart and soul of this novel: even the Dad is unexpectedly vibrant, and some financial clients are also wonderful. However, backstory is boring and repeated lapses into backstory drag down what would otherwise be a thoroughly engaging story. Handford explores motivation, both in small ways and in major. Choices, large and small, are thought-provoking.

Overall, The Light of Hidden Flowers is interesting and unpredictable.

Although it is a serious novel taking itself a bit too seriously, it is in fact beautifully written and engaging; I will certainly be looking for Handford’s next.

Unfortunately for Jack, citizens of the Blue States are no longer allowed to cross Red America. He is faced with an impossible choice: ignore his lover’s peril or risk his own life and sanity by venturing into the dark heart of The Red States. When the armies of the Mexican Reconquista come marching into Los Angeles, Jack’s hand is forced and he heads east in an old-fashioned gas guzzling car. Stephen Kozeniewski, writer of Braineater Jones, The Ghoul Archipelago and Billy and The Cloneasaurus, brings an epic future adventure.

How far would you go to save someone you loved?

What I found most interesting about the science fiction elements of the plot was how subtle they were at first. This wasn’t at all what I was expecting to find in the first few chapters, so I was really interested to see how and when they would show up in more obvious ways. Writing it this way was the perfect fit for all of the action scenes, though, as they didn’t leave a lot of room for much else until the pace slowed down a little bit. This story was clearly meant to be fast-paced and full of adventure. I quickly grew to appreciate why it was written the way it was.

The world building was extremely well done. The Red States and the Blue States had unique cultures that were instantly recognizable and full of little details that made them three dimensional and unforgettable. Either one would have been a wonderful backdrop for everything that happened to these characters. Including both of them made it impossible for me to stop reading. I simply had to know everything about them and how they’d affect the main character.

Jack’s trek kept me on the edge of my seat from the beginning to the end. It was such a dangerous mission that there were several times when I honestly couldn’t see how he’d survive his latest conflict. The word intense doesn’t even begin to describe some of the predicaments he got into while attempting to cross enemy territory. There was so much adrenaline running through my veins that I had to force myself to stop reading an hour before bedtime so that I could actually relax and go to sleep at the right time. To me, this is a sign of a fantastic book as well as a reminder of why I’m such a huge fan of Mr. Kozeniewski’s work.

Every Kingdom Divided was incredible. I’d whole-heartedly recommend it to anyone who enjoys science fiction as well as to anyone who is curious to give this genre a try. It’s a great choice for hardcore and brand new fans alike!

All while discovering that when it comes to murder, there’s no place like hOMe.

What’s not to love about a mystery and lots of animals thrown into the plot? That’s exactly what this book offered. I haven’t read the previous two titles in this series, but I didn’t find it too much of a problem getting caught up to speed with the main character, Kate Davidson.

She’s likable and always seems to want to do the right thing. It’s a quality that’s certainly put to the test in this story where her estranged mother is accused of murder. There are a host of other likable characters including Kate’s boyfriend, Michael, who along another easy to like, character, Bella, the German shepherd, try and figure out the key to the mystery of who really killed the victim.

There are some funny scenes and some intense ones for Kate when she learns why her mother abandoned her. Kate’s a yoga teacher too and some of her clients were quirky and funny. I especially liked the opening to the book where Kate was holding a doga demonstration and along comes a lady with a rabbit.

The pacing is spot on and the mystery does have you turning the pages, mostly to see what becomes of Kate, and if her mother will actually be found guilty of the crime. This story also sets up what I know will be an equally good next installment in this series.

If you like your mystery with a little humor and quirkiness, and love a wet nosed sidekick, then I’d say this would be a good pick for you.

Things go from bad to worse after she returns home from a therapeutic mani-pedi to discover her ex inside her house—the same ex who’d run off with their lottery jackpot, and a bartender from the local biker bar. But the worst part is, he’s dead. Now she has to solve the toughest case of her fledgling career.

Time is running out, and leads are tough to find. While Jenna’s chasing down clues, Detective Johnson is chasing her, convinced that she knows more than she’s telling. There’s an undeniable chemistry sparking between them, but there’s a murder to solve and justice to be served.

Is Jenna really the only one with a motive for killing her ex?

Jenna is an odd character, and I had a hard time deciding how I felt about her. There were times when I was highly annoyed by her attitude, and then other times when I felt sorry for her. Jenna has a very easy going attitude, and despite her lack of close friends, she is friendly and pleasant with most of the people she meets. However, she doesn’t seem to be overly concerned with anything that doesn’t directly affect her. I found her to be self-centered, and I don’t like how she treats the few friends that she has. Fortunately, as the story progressed, Jenna made some progress in that department. I truly believe she is well on her way to being a more compassionate person.

When Jenna’s ex is killed, she is the prime suspect. Understandably, she wants to clear her name as quickly as possible. However, I don’t think she went about it in quite the right way. She seems to go out of her way to irritate the detective on the case. With all the stunts she pulled, I’m very surprised that she didn’t get in serious trouble. I couldn’t help but think that if she had been more forthcoming with the information she had compiled, she and Detective Johnson would have gotten along much better. Despite this issue, I will admit that Jenna really does have a talent for being a good detective. There were very few leads in the case and she does an excellent job of tracking down every shred of evidence she can find.

The conclusion of the mystery caught me off guard. There were very few suspects, but the true culprit was not someone I had ever seriously considered. Once Jenna began to suspect this character, everything wrapped up in a quick, but satisfying way.

I think New Smyrna Swing is a good book. I enjoyed watching Jenna solve the case in her unique way. I recommend it to anyone looking for a quick and fun mystery.

ALL’S FAIR IN LOVE

Battlefields and barrooms hold much more interest for Edward Westover, Duke of Swarthmore, than a little girl’s fondness for dolls and lace. When he takes possession of his enemy’s estate, everything that villain held dear—including his daughter—belongs to Edward. Hire a governess, arrange a dowry, give a few reassurances, and be off on his way—that’s Edward’s plan. But he’s in for the shock of his life. Kate Benton is stunned. Who is this arrogant, infuriating man who’s invited himself into her home and taken over her life? Her vow: to do everything in her power to convince him to leave her—and Brambly House—alone. Yet as chilly days melt into sultry nights, Kate sees glimpses of kindness underneath Edward’s cool façade . . . and a passionate nature that takes her breath away. There’s so much she doesn’t know about this man. But does she dare trust this devilish duke with her heart?

I really liked meeting Kate and Edward. The start of their relationship was highly unconventional and unique and because of that the book was hard to put down. How can the actions of revenge turn into the catalyst for romance and a happy ever after? Dukes are Forever answers that by telling a tale that ends with a wonderful resolution. This is pure romance.

This is the first book in what appears to be a trilogy. It’s about three men who served in war together and their friendship was born and solidified on the battlefield. Their war is over and they are back in polite society where Edward, the hero in this book, and Grey and Thomas need to find their place in the ton.

Edward is now the Duke of Strathmore but he’s not happy about it. His life isn’t turning out to be the way he wanted so this story is about finding the one thing he was missing in his life and he hopes to embrace it. Not in his wildest dreams could he imagine how it would come about. The conflict comes from bringing a doll to his new ward only to find out that his ward is a lot older than he was led to believe. Kate is her name and healing is her calling. She’s feisty, opinionated, and independent and as far from a typical society miss as one can get. It’s Kate’s unusualness that sparks life into Edward’s cold heart and makes him engage in life again. The sparks fly, passions are stirred and there are plenty of reasons for a reader to not want to put the book down. The storytelling is strong and the dialogue is brisk and peppery, but it’s funny at times too.

What isn’t funny is the darkness that focuses on Kate. What she doesn’t know is that the person she should be able to trust most in her life ends up being quite the opposite. I had no idea it would go so far so I felt really bad for the heroine. For so long she had hope, she strived to be what expected of her and demanded little, all in the vain hope that someday things would be better. Edward is the only light in her life and a reader will be able to see that all too clearly.

When Kate and Edward to explore the physical side of their growing love and attachment, it’s sensual, sexy and sometimes fun. The scenes were written effectively and I enjoyed their banter and how well they played off of each other. It took Edward a while to come to terms with his feelings but once he does, like his military career, he’s focused on an objective, and in Dukes are Forever Kate is the prize.

I also liked the secondary characters, Edward’s brothers in arms, Thomas and Grey. Since they are going to have their own stories eventually, the author did a wonderful job of fleshing them out, making them interesting and creating an effective hook for readers to want more. I know I certainly do. I really enjoyed Ms. Harrington’s Dukes are Forever. This was a great romance and I can’t wait for Grey’s story!

The problem is, Merry is already betrothed, and the former runaway bride has vowed to make it all the way to the altar. As honor clashes with irresistible passion, Trent realizes the stakes are higher than anyone could have imagined. In his battle to save Merry and win her heart, one thing becomes clear:

There are many industries like tea, lumbering, iron and http://www.donssite.com/truckphoto/Pictures_of_trucks_on_the_road.htm cost cialis steel etc. which have heavy machines running on electricity. The problems can be caused due to a number of men to buy cheap viagra no rx easily. She’s altogether much too American to ever be an English rose. She’ll just have to teach these London elites that there’s more to this American heiress than the ability to garner a proposal or three.

So much to love about this book! First off, Merry is so very American and, first the most part, unapologetic about that fact. She does begin to think that she needs to better emulate the English ladies she encounters but, bless her heart, her blood runs true red, white and blue. I loved her enthusiasm and the fact that while she tried to behave, there were times that she simply had to be herself. The best of those times was actually after she’s married to Trent, or Jack, or Duke (they’re all the same person and the constant name switching was a little odd.)

Trent or Jack or whichever name he went by, was a swoony kind of hero. He was dark and broody without much reason to enjoy his station in life. And he has an evil (not identical) twin who isn’t so much evil as he is just the opposite of Trent. Or at least he tries to be the opposite. I got the impression that there’s a lot more to Cedric than what he puts out for the public though he keeps his good parts buried deep. I look forward to seeing more of him and finding out exactly what happened to the Cedric I met in London when he left for the Bahamas.

Back to Trent and Merry, they were refreshing. Their wedding day may not have been the blissful event Merry would have imagined when she finally said “I do” but the moment after he raises her veil and kisses her, that was the moment I could envision their happily ever after. Interestingly enough, it happens well before the end of the book and unlike a much used “had to get married because they were compromised” trope, their’s was for even more nontraditional reasons. No, she wasn’t pregnant.

Because there was so much story left from the day of the wedding to end of the book, I knew that there would have to be some additional conflict. Actually, there are a couple of issues they have to work through but the main one stems from his childhood and her reputation of falling in/out of love. It was all very understandable and realistic. He had just reasons for wanting to avoid using the “L” word even though it was so obvious to this reader in every move he made where Merry was concerned. As often happens, it took something drastic for him to see what this reader was already very aware of.

On a slightly off note, I have to think Ms. James is possibly a Potterhead. She was in London when this book was written and there are names and places used in this book that had me wondering if she wasn’t making subtle nods to the world of Harry Potter. Maybe not but, there’s a Mrs. Honeydukes, Merry’s dog’s name is George and Trent’s home place is called Hawksmede (similar to Hogsmead). I could totally be reading something into nothing but coincidence but as a confirmed Potterhead, it still made me smile.

Readers who follow Ms. James writing will find this to be another winner and one that I could cheerfully read a second time to truly enjoy the cleverness in her writing. The way it ends led me to believe that there may be a sequel involving Cedric. Easy recommend from this always entertaining story teller.

This is a lovely, spicy M/M romance that I greatly enjoyed. The sex between the two men was deliciously hot and prolific. I thoroughly enjoyed watching Silver and Kian – who are relatively young at nineteen and eighteen respectively – find each other and come together to have their first serious relationship. Readers should be aware there are a few “hot button” issues touched on within the plot – self-harming and HIV – but I found overall the book was written tastefully and these issues added to the story and weren’t just thrown casually in. I also enjoyed the very strong secondary characters, and indeed found myself drawn into their stories as much as Kian and Silver’s.

This is a very emotional, character driven story. The plot itself pretty much revolves around Kian and Silver’s relationship – and that of their close friends. This was plenty, however, to keep me interested and quickly turning the pages. I’d happily read more stories – especially if one were to be written about Silver’s flatmates, Damian and Josh.

A strong, intense story that I can highly recommend.

I hadn’t read a book by Steven Manchester before I picked up A Changing Season. I wasn’t sure what I’d be getting into. Books with dogs tend to be bittersweet and while those are good books, I wanted something a little lighter. I got that with this book. Yes, there is tension and more than a few black moments, but all in all, it’s a good read.

I liked the bond between Billy and Jimmy, his dog. Being an animal person myself, I could relate to the way the two were together. Dogs can be the best of friends for a human—if the human lets the relationship happen. I liked how the author allowed Jimmy to be that silent voice of reason and comfort for Billy.

There were moments in the book that were a tad predictable. I won’t go into what so I don’t ruin the story, but honestly, the predictability didn’t take away from the enjoyment I had while reading.

I liked the book and if you’re looking for a coming-of-age book that has a lot of heart, then this might be the book for you.

A high-spirited and engaging novel, Every Anxious Wave plays ball with the big questions of where we would go and who we would become if we could rewrite our pasts, as well as how to hold on to love across time.

Take complication upon complication with a wormhole thrown in for good measure and you’ve got an interesting read.

I wasn’t sure what I was getting into when I picked up this book. Every Anxious Wave started out rather fluffy and retro. The idea of a wormhole where you can go back and visit concerts from the bands of your past… seems cool. Had the book kept with that theme, I would’ve been totally on board. Think of the concerts that could be seen! How many could be videotaped for posterity or videotaped in better definition? It’s mind-boggling.

But there’s a twist. Karl, the main character, accidentally sends his friend not back to 1980 to prevent the killing of John Lennon, but to 980 AD. Oops. At least in 1980, he could get back—there’s tech that could help. Not in 980. So what’s a couple of guys to do?

For me, this is where the believability sort of went downhill. I liked the idea of the mistake with the date. Hey, he’s stuck and we’ve got to get him back. Cool idea. But there were things in the book that didn’t quite get explained. Like how’d he get the wormhole? Where’d it come from? Was there a downside? I would’ve liked a little more explanation so I understood the mechanics of the wormhole, but I must say I was distracted by the idea of going back to visit concerts.

The other thing I had a problem with was the relationship between Lena and Karl. The whole thing felt forced. Like, they were together and that’s great. The development just didn’t feel like it was there. I did like the complications brought in for these two, but I wish there had been more of a jump into their emotions than happened.

Still, this was a fun read and made me long for the concerts I never got a chance to see given by musicians that died before my time. Thank you, Mo Daviau for that trip down memory lane.
