For Jonathan, spending months renovating his Italian villa was his way of getting over his ex and getting back to normal after his divorce was finalized. When he sees Olivia, he reels between taking a chance or saving himself from heartache all over again.

However, when Jonathan’s ex-wife leaves his eighteen month old daughter who he had no idea existed, he’s frozen in shock. Olivia, seeing everything unfold, is faced with a frightened toddler and a new dad who has no idea what to do. So, she takes charge and vows the child will know she is loved.

The journey brings them face to face with each other’s desires, pain and secrets. The story had a couple of twists that I was not expecting at all. I liked the fact that this story was not only about Jonathan and Olivia. It had a hint of family in it that completely rounded out the story.

I think the characters were well thought out and mesh seamlessly with the plot. The relationship between Jonathan and Olivia is slow in the developing process. They had lust and desire between them when they first met and I was immediately thinking that the lust would be the point that would bring them together. I was so wrong. I loved the slow developing relationship they had. They had something going for them and between them besides the impossible to ignore lust.

All in all, I think it this is a book for romance lovers and readers looking for damaged heroes and heroines finding their way back to love.

A romantic hardened by reality…

Evelyn Lancaster turned her back on her love for ranch hand Jesse Greenwood when she was sixteen to pursue a career and marry into wealth that could save her father’s struggling ranch. Now twenty-three, she works hard to keep the property afloat, but no suitor has stirred her heart the way Jesse did. After her father falls ill, she needs all the help she can get to keep the ranch running.

A cowboy returning to what he left behind…

After making his fortune, a newly wealthy Jesse has returned home to see his younger sister married. Still smarting from Evelyn’s rejection, he finds the tables have turned, and now only his investment could save the ranch that he vowed to never step foot on again.

When he agrees to help her salvage her family legacy, they must overcome their pride and painful past to work together. As long-held emotions rekindle, Jesse pretends indifference, only to admit his true feelings in an unsigned letter left on Evelyn’s porch.

Will one last letter give them the courage to say yes to love on the wild Texas plains?

Cowboys, cowgirls, ranches, cattle, barns, horses, ranch hands and the old west. Nothing makes a more perfect setting for romance, lost love and second chances.

I loved the characters in One Last Letter, both the stars and the supporting cast. The character that comes closest to being an antagonist is suitably dislikable. Evelyn’s best friend is fun and bubbly. Her father also is an interesting and surprisingly layered character. I loved Jesse’s sister and the ranch hands. It’s just an extremely enjoyable group that made reading the book so much fun.

Evelyn was a very strong female lead. Her commitment to the ranch and her home is admirable. You can appreciate how far she’s come in her life and how much she’s learned. She’s a woman trying to find her place in the life and in the world, whose still trying to figure out what she wants and what she should do. She was a wonderful, imperfect heroine and one I easily rooted for.

It was also fun watching her interact with Jesse. They both behaved in a mature and levelheaded way to each other a lot of the time and that felt fresh and different. Jesse worries about his sister marrying well socially, which was interesting since he believes his social position was the reason Evelyn rejected him when they were younger. It gives an insight into Jesse’s character and feelings and the way Evelyn’s rejection affected them.

The two leads were often suffering from miscommunications and doubt. They often misread each other’s actions and motives and each time they did I was rooting for them to work it out. I felt very invested in the relationship and really cared that the two find their happy ending.

Occasionally the dialog felt uneven, ranging from awkward phasing attempting to sound historically accurate to the usage of expressions that would not have been used in that time but it seldom distracted from the rest of the book.

The book reaches some interesting conclusions on some pretty big ideas such as responsibility, growing up, consequences, and what you should do for love. I didn’t agree with all of it, but I respected the author for the ideas and the unique perspective.

The detail and descriptions were perfect; giving a real sense of being in the middle of a western, from the way the author described the ranch to the little details such as the creaking floorboards.

One Last Letter is a great romantic read with great western flair. If you like westerns or just love a good story of second chances, you’ll love this book.

Can a fun weekend romance grow into anything more? Is there enough time? And does anyone even want it to?

Between the Sheets is fun and lighthearted. Told from Maggie’s point of view, it has a good sense of humor and an upbeat tone. The setting for the story is perfect. The author does a fantastic job of describing the music teacher retreat and really building a community of sorts with all the characters and supporting cast. It was a unique setting and I loved the interactions between all the characters. I was amused by the cliques and hierarchy among the music teachers and it added a lot of fun moments to the story.

Randy is a great hero. I found him likable and sympathetic. I loved that he wore glasses. I loved his sense of humor. There aren’t many serious moments in the story but when there were, I genuinely felt for him and I wanted to see him happy by the end of the book. His back story was one of my favorite parts of the story and made him a very interesting character.

I wasn’t however as attached to Maggie, largely because I felt like I never really got to know her, which was strange considering the book was told from her perspective. So much of the story though was her doing things that she told the reader was out of character for her that I never really got much of a sense of what her true character was. There a few hints but largely I felt like I never got to meet the real her. Since we spent so much time with Maggie, this was a big issue for me. I also wondered if I didn’t know Maggie, how could Randy really get to know her?

I did like the way that Maggie’s doubts tied with her past, weaved together to create very believable obstacles between the couple. The romance in general is very believable and I enjoyed following its progression.

The book is a pretty fast read and quite an enjoyable one. It’s a fluffy, enjoyable romance and would be a great companion for a lazy afternoon. If you want something that’s lighthearted and enjoyable, you couldn’t go wrong with Between the Sheets.

Someone is making homeless cats disappear and Michelle Slade wants to put a stop to it. The office manager at Aegar Investigations and owner of cat rescue Cats Alive, she struggles to keep together the life she’s forged since the one she knew shattered five years ago on the night she was raped. She couldn’t have predicted that the rape’s impact would reach into her present life and put a strangle grip on all she holds dear, thanks to the evil machinations of powerful businessman, William Carter.

When Michelle’s problems with Carter escalate, friends rally to help her, with private investigator Casey Mitchell at the top of the line. When Casey finds his investigation takes him down a very dark path of diabolic and life-threatening research conducted by Carter Enterprises, he attempts to keep his work life and his private identity as a were-lynx separate. However, though he’s been trained his whole life to keep his identity and his colony of were-cats protected, he now struggles with terrible aloneness.

As they are thrown together to save the missing cats and remedy worse problems, Michelle and Casey can triumph and find true love, or lose everything.

Secrets was a well plotted and interesting story filled with mystery and longing. Our heroine, Michelle, is a strong, intelligent women trying to rebuild her life after being raped five years earlier. She struggles with feeling safe and it’s also impacted her willingness to become involved with any man.

Casey is the perfect foil for her. He’s incredibly patient and sweet, and also just crazy in love with her. He treats her much like the fearful, feral cats they both deal with and it keeps her from running completely away. He’s such a great guy!

At first, I thought the premise in the blurb sounded a little silly. I love cats (I have cats), but basing an entire mystery on some missing cats? I think the blurb misrepresents the depth of the story, however, and I hope it doesn’t keep other readers from giving it a try. The truth is there is a much deeper, more frightening mystery in there and it’s all tied together with Michelle’s past and Casey’s past and current life.

The plot was interesting, but it’s clear there was at least one other book in this series. Not that this didn’t stand alone, but I could tell there was backstory with one couple here that I was missing. Even so, it didn’t really impact my enjoyment of this book, just made me wonder what had happened before (and I’ll most likely go check out what came before).

The story was also packed with interesting and unique secondary characters. The author did a great job creating a community here, and that always makes the story a better read for me. I adore having a group of people to get attached to. It gave the story a richness to be savored.

I also enjoyed her voice and writing skill, though occasionally some lines seemed strangely constructed. For example, “The thought hit Carter’s face, and the truth registered for a moment, then dropped to the floor.” While I understand what she’s trying to convey, the odd vision of a thought flying across the room like something tangible, hitting him in the face and then falling to the floor pulled me right out of the story for a moment.

Still, I completely fell in love with Casey and the romance in this book made my heart sigh. Michelle is a very lucky girl. Her solid group of friends were amazing, and I can’t wait to read more about them. While the mystery of the missing cats, and Michelle’s property battle are wrapped up in this story, other questions arise, which makes it clear there’s another installment coming. I, for one, am glad. I look forward to revisiting these characters and their world.

Coming home to Beauford Bend opens up old wounds for four sexy, successful brothers, but the love of a few good Southern women will heal their hearts and change their lives forever.

Country music heartthrob Jackson Beauford isn’t used to hearing “no” for an answer. When a tragic fire at one of his concerts stirs memories of the blaze that claimed his family years ago, all he wants is to go back to his childhood home in Tennessee and wallow in his grief. But he arrives home to chaos … and a Southern magnolia with her heels dug in.

After suffering a vicious attack in New York City, Emory Lowell returned to Beauford Bend, a place she’s loved since she was a teenager. Now in charge of Around the Bend Elegant Events, she’s not about to let a spoiled superstar take away her livelihood. The boutique artisan town of Beauford depends on this business, and so does she. With its high walls and around-the- clock security, Beauford Bend is the only place she’s ever truly felt safe.

Jackson insists she close down his late aunt’s business and leave him in peace, but quiet Emory refuses to budge, knowing this is a battle worth fighting. As a passionate attraction flares between these two wounded souls, they discover there’s much more at stake here than business. Jackson may be just the person to help Emory face her past, and if she can help him learn to forgive himself, their love might be the key to turning Beauford Bend back into a real home.

Will two people with enough baggage between them to fill the lost and found of an airport, help each other heal or just cause further damage?

Jackson is dealing with a fire that erupted at his last concert, killing fans and band members alike, a fire that reminds him too much of the one that killed his parents and sister and which he feels personally reasonable for. Emory had her life shattered two years ago when she was a victim of sexual assault, and she’s still living with the fear, self-doubt, and mistrust from that horrible night.

Sexual assault is always going to be a very difficult subject to write about. It’s an extremely sensitive topic and it has to be justified. It shouldn’t be there in passing, an easy way to write some easy drama. And in this book at least, it’s not. It’s important to the plot and the character of Emory. The assault itself is not depicted, and we only have to read the barest details. The story is not so much about the assault as much as its effect on Emory and it’s handled both smartly and sensitively.

Emory has a curious mixture of strength and weakness to her that is both convincing but also heartbreaking. Throughout the book we see her grow and heal, and you can’t help but want to cheer for her along the way.

Nor is Emory’s the only story that deals with heavy material. I actually winced while reading about the death of Jackson’s sister. It’s not graphic, there’s not a lot of description, but the basic facts were awful enough that yes, I cringed a little when I read them.

But the heaviness of both our heroes’ backstories contributed to building a truly deep and meaningful romance. I rooted for them to find their ways, more than I have done for any other couple in a long time. They had so much farther to go and every step they took felt like a huge accomplishment which really spoke of how strong they both were.

There was a lot of plot in the book: Jackson’s issues, Emory’s issues, their relationship, Jackson wanting to quit music, Jackson trying to close the business, Emory trying to keep it open, Jackson’s relationship with his brothers. I was interested in all of it but wished some parts could have received a little more time.

The ending felt slightly rushed, with a too-convenient revelation tying up one plot thread, and certain things getting hurried along, particularly with Jackson’s story.

I loved the sense of community, with the book introducing you to a lot of the townsfolk and their businesses. I enjoyed getting to know everyone in Beauford Bend, and it felt like a real place, with real people.

This is the first book in a series, and I for one am eagerly looking forward to reading more about the Beauford family. Don’t let the darker aspects of this story deter you. It’s a lovely, layered romance, and one you’re sure to enjoy.

Three years ago, Morgan Parrish was embroiled in her father’s plan to marry a man who was destined for the presidency. There was just one problem: Morgan was in love with and pregnant by another man. When the house of cards her father had built came tumbling down, Morgan fled town and the backlash. Now, she’s stuck in Harmony Falls after a childhood bank account turns out to be empty. Even more shocking, the child she intended to place for adoption rather than cause more scandal is at her side.

As the son of the town drunk, life hasn’t always been easy for Charlie Cramer. Maybe that’s why he’s holding on to his own sobriety and his brand-new restaurant so tightly—too tightly if his grouchiness and control-freak tendencies in the kitchen are any indication. I found it next to impossible to put it down, as I kept telling myself ‘one more chapter, one more chapter’, because I wanted to know what would happen with Morgan and Charlie.

Morgan easily wins you over with how much she cares for her daughter. The lengths she’s willing to go to, to provide a home and security for her child is really moving. She is also a woman who has clearly made some pretty big mistakes in her past, and you have to respect her every time she faces up to them.

I loved Charlie. Elley Arden really shows you his struggle and therefore his strength in resisting the temptation to start drinking again. He’s got a fun sense of humor but can be prickly. He has feelings for Morgan but has been burned by her one to many times, and watching him struggle against those feelings and the way Morgan reacts to it, ranges from amusing to romantic.

It did bother me that Morgan never told Charlie, until her return to town, that she had decided to keep their child and hadn’t given her up for adoption two years ago as she had originally planned. She was never really called out on this, and despite all the issues between her and Charlie, that one was never brought up save for a few passing lines despite striking me as a really big deal.

I also never got much of sense for the town of Harmony Falls. The book is the third in a series centered on the town, but I didn’t get much of a feel for the community. The only real sense I got was that it was unpleasant as the majority of the population was downright rude to Morgan for things that were either none of their business or not her fault. This made it hard to not completely agree with Morgan and her desire to get as far away from the town as possible.

Despite being the third book of the series, the author does a good job of catching you up on previous events. I never felt out of the loop or uninformed, and the story was focused on the present, not the past.

The characters are the real strength of this book. They are detailed and fleshed out and I got a real sense of each and every one of them, the main characters as well as the supporting cast. I was definitely interested in the plot and how things would turn out, but it was the people inhabiting the story that kept me turning the pages.

This book made me interested in reading the rest of the series and I will certainly be checking them out. The next time you’re in the mood to read a good romance, I recommend you try this one. Only be warned, you won’t be able to make do with one chapter.

Some of this may be due to their ability to mess up royally whenever they meet, some is simply due to who they are: determined to be self-reliant and fearing commitment because there are more cons to it than pros. Abby started off as a very likeable character, while Carter struck me as a bit too macho type. But as I got to know them, their characters changed.

Because of an awkward phone number mix up, Abby suddenly finds herself unintentionally spying on Carter. At first she just wants to help him, then she becomes too embarrassed by everything she’s done in the name of Carter’s friend Jax – the person all those messages were intended for – to tell Carter the truth. While all this miscommunication was a lot of fun to follow, there came a point in the story where the misunderstandings became plain old lying.

There was a scene towards the end of the first half of the novel where Abby spilled water on Jackson when he was trying to explain some of the mix up to Carter. Of course Carter thought he was telling him that Jackson had an affair with Abby, so she doused Jackson with water to stop him. It was obvious that this was done purely to keep the plot of the mix up continuing, although the misunderstanding could’ve easily been rectified by either Abby or Jackson.

It was at this point that I couldn’t really root for Abby any longer because I didn’t feel her actions were justified. Carter however became a much more likeable person, and a lot of his previous actions were explained and the motivation behind them became clear. I also enjoyed reading about Caroline, Abby’s friend, Jackson, and another of Carter’s friends, Roger. It’s always important for novels to have strong secondary characters, and Text Me has them.

Perhaps if the plot were a bit simpler, with fewer unlikely coincidences and mix ups, it would’ve been a bit easier to follow, and perhaps then it wouldn’t seem like Abby was lying on purpose. I really wished I could like her, but as the plot developed I felt she became less and less likeable and her actions were less and less reasonable.

Text Me emphasizes the very important message that we shouldn’t rely on modern technology to fall in love. Doing it face to face is far more enjoyable and reliable.

But is Rochelle prepared to take the risk and relocate halfway around the world—and can Daniel open up and let someone be a true partner in his life?

This sweet romance shows that even career-driven people are capable of falling in love and having meaningful relationships.

The story started off smoothly, with likeable characters and an interesting set up. At the beginning, the romance between Daniel and Rochelle is sweet, and it’s enchanting to watch them struggle with the attraction they feel for each other. The chemistry is there, but they both have plans that don’t include relationships. The conflict feels genuine, but despite this, or maybe because of it, the quick development of their relationship seems believable.

But as the story progressed, instead of the conflict between them and their inner struggles becoming more pronounced and stronger, they seemed less and less convincing and almost contrived. The story developments after Daniel had received the urgent phone call from home all felt naïve and cliché. I hoped for the characters, so charming at first, to develop and grow throughout the story, but instead they became more or less stock figures with a predictable ending.

I realize this novel is part of a series, but some of the events at Emerald Springs lacked closure or at least a hint at a resolution sometime in the future. On the other hand, the secondary characters (who are protagonists in the other novels in the series) were well-written despite the fact that the series is penned by various authors. Although this was an ARC, the spelling and grammatical mistakes were too recurrent for me to be able to ignore them.

In Daniel’s Decision, a man and a woman who swore off love and serious relationships find just that. The strength of these characters is in how they accept the gift of love.

But Alec has never forgotten her, despite his vow to stay away. There is more to that long-ago day than Annabelle knows, and shocking lies have distorted the past. Can he uncover its painful truths, and still keep his distance from the stunning beauty? Can he deny his forbidden desire, even as it flares again between them, hotter than ever?

Even the most honorable and temperate men hide a passion in them. If you don’t believe it, Alec Carstairs will convince you.

Unlike the majority of historical romances, the hero in Once Upon a Wager is not rake who’s after a respectable lady. Alec Carstairs is an honorable and a rather reserved man. His polite manners and ‘priggishness’ – according to his best friend Lord Marworth – would make for an unremarkable hero if Ms. LeMense hadn’t juxtaposed those aspects of his character to the consuming passion that threatens to undo him every time Annabelle is near him. The author manages to show the strength of his love and devotion precisely through this duality of his character.

Another factor that adds to the strength of the conflict is the tragedy and pain that Annabelle had gone through. She’s not a whimsical character with nothing in her past to support her characterization. Instead, there’s a credible change in her personality after the accident, giving her and the plot a lot of weight. Needless to say, the hardships in Annabelle’s life convince the readers to feel for her and invest themselves into the story. And in the end, we are nicely rewarded for that.

Even the secondary characters are compelling, and I will be severely disappointed if Lady Jane and Lord Marworth don’t get to tell their story, preferably a shared one. I loved Sophia, the slightly eccentric, daring woman who introduces Annabelle to society and advises her to take everything with a grain of salt because the ton is a capricious, unreliable phenomenon. The relationships are so convincing I could picture Benjamin’s and Alec’s banter, Benjamin flirting with Annabelle just to annoy Alec, Sophia reading Annabelle’s and Alec’s emotions like an open book … And the chemistry between the protagonists would cause the pages to ignite had I been reading a paperback copy.

The pace of the story was such that I wished I could read the book in one sitting. Even the break between the first and second parts served its purpose, making the emotional distance between the protagonists more perceptible and their cold, distant attitude towards each other even more believable.

I’m glad I got the chance to read Once Upon a Wager because it was one of the best historical romances I’ve ever read. I sincerely hope to read more from Ms. LeMense.

California Thyme delves deeply into how past disappointments and hurt can shape us, but also shows the reader how to overcome the fear and take a risk again.

The most important message in California Thyme, for me at least, is that a loving family can give us a firm basis for a happy life, and when we don’t get to experience that as children, the hurt follows us long into adulthood. It takes a special sort of love to help us overcome the barriers that we set up. This is exactly what James does for Mandy in Dawes’s romance.

I think how Lola and Dana’s shadows follow Mandy everywhere is something that the novel really excels in showing. Perhaps even too much, as Mandy’s indecision towards the end gets slightly cumbersome. She is hurting and insecure, but maybe obsessing a little bit too much about her parents and the way they failed her. James brings his own share of baggage to the first meeting with Mandy at Costanoa Grill. His portrayal seems more and more convincing as we get to glimpse details from his past.

I wished for more immediacy in the descriptions of the fast paced film world. I feel there was a lot of talk about how intense and wild Hollywood was, but I got to see little of that in the descriptions of the film shootings. Even with the sabotage subplot there was no real suspense or mystery, and the discovery of the perpetrator was no real surprise to me.

While the scenes between James and Mandy were sweet and told us much about them as individual characters, I never really felt any chemistry between them. Despite the ‘should they or shouldn’t they’ atmosphere throughout their romance, I didn’t feel any tension nor any physical attraction. Perhaps they should’ve both been a bit more active in the budding relationship and not take everything so passively; I think that would have helped make them seem more involved and ‘passionate’.

This is a sweet romance that puts a lot of emphasis on family values, honesty and loyalty. It makes true love sound like something everyone can gain, if only they’re willing to take that risk.
