I usually feel happy after reading a book by this author and I’m glad to say this one continued the tradition.

Another reason that I can safely say this was a very good book was because of the one I read right before. It was so long of wind that by the time I hit page 150, my brain was alternately screaming from the slow pace of the story and trying to fall asleep at the same time. The plot and characters were good but the delivery was an exercise in molasses. Not so with Runaway Vampire, oh no, by page 150 it was steamy, it was exciting and I couldn’t wait to read more, more, more. Maybe my higher rating is because I was so incredibly happy to read a plot that actually moved and had a brisk and stimulating pace that thrilled me to my toes. I enjoyed the emotions of an older woman finding herself young again, I loved watching Dante love her before the turn, and after, I giggled at the part where Lucien (fans can never forget HIS character) actually cracked a joke and I adored the reason why he won’t change his phone ringtones no matter how much they irritate him. So romantic!

Ms. Sands does have a little background drama that starts off in this book but it is meant for the next one. Talk about a successful hook; there is no way on this good earth that I will miss the next book if it’s about Tomasso. The external conflict does however plague both Dante and Mary and provides opportunities for readers to see just how well matched they are as a couple.

As for humor, I never knew where it would pop up. One of the most hilarious scenes for me stems from where this sentence shows up, “Stop playing with your condoms and kiss me.” If readers have a sense of humor like me, they are going to have a giggle fest that will last for at least a page or so because the whole visual Ms. Sands painted with her descriptions and dialogue was uproariously funny. I’ve re-read those paragraphs quite a few times just so I could snicker/snort some more – it’s total fun!

Runaway Vampire is a hit. It’s practically perfect, a little quirky, still has the Argeneau family feel to it and I’m satisfied with the happy for now. Why an HFN? Because it ended with a beginning and I am excited about the prospect. Ms. Sands knows how to leave a reader craving for more in all the best ways.

The author painted a wonderful backdrop for her story and her characters, and the ensuing dialogue not only kept me reading but kept the story moving at a brisk and steady pace. A reader will find many reasons to grin and chuckle throughout The Knave of Hearts.

Another point about this novel that pleased me is that the timeline interweaves a bit with the story about Lavinia’s sister, Louisa, in The Viscount Who Lived Down the Lane. The Knave of Hearts can certainly stand on its own but for fans of Ms. Boyle’s previous story, reading this book about Lavinia next makes it extra fun and interesting. However Lavinia’s story comes with its own villain and drama which brings out the hero hidden deep inside Tuck. The ultimate demise of the villain was a shock. I never saw it coming and the sharp surprise made more of an impact and increased the likeability of the novel even more.

As much as there is light heartedness and humor in the telling of Lavinia and Tuck’s romance, there is a sad and touching element that haunts both books, and it has something to do with a friend from the past, and some letters. There is a cleansing of sorts, a wrenching off of the band aid of time which forces Tuck to face his fears and regrets. A healing begins between two men and affects a third. It’s happy yet bittersweet at the same time.

Tuck also has some fascinating skeletons in his closet that he tries to distance himself from but the author makes those skeletons rattle and come out at the best possible time to have an extraordinary effect on their romance and the suspenseful part of the plot. It was quite enjoyable and kept those pages flipping. I love it when a character is revealed to have more depth and personality than led to believe. Tuck might have started educating Lavinia but she turns the tables and shows him how very improper she can be. Very cool stuff.

The Knave of Hearts is a treat not to be missed. I adored watching Tuck and Lavinia fall in love and I truly believe this is a story well worth reading. The very end of the novel was written so well, it caused me to sigh in romantic bliss – now that’s romance.

A debate between Oliver Radford and Mr. Spock would probably be a draw if not for one element, Clara. She’s Oliver’s Achilles heel, and what a delightful one she turned out to be.

Both the hero and heroine are outside the box when it comes to viewpoints; how they navigate the beau monde, how they choose who to associate with, and their roles in society. My favorite part is when the hero goes on trial because he wants to marry Clara. I do not believe I have ever seen that scenario played out before and I found it clever and quite entertaining.

The very thing that makes this novel so compelling and unique, the use of words, also has the misfortunate tendency to slow down the pace of the story. Oliver’s point of view is expounded upon so thoroughly that I surely thought I’d go mad. Clara was a tad better because she used her words to spar with and annoy Oliver, so I thought that rather grand. But, if the author’s intent was to convey to a reader just how annoying and irritating Oliver’s unique brand of conversation was, then she succeeded. A note of humor about this complaint is that it’s shared not only by me but by various characters in the story, including the hero’s best friend, Westcott. Even the King had a few words, so it’s not my imagination. My only question is, did the author have to convince me so thoroughly?

Oliver’s seduction of Clara was a thing of beauty. It was sensual and well written and the more adventurous scenes afterwards were not only quite spicy but another platform for the use of more words. At least in this, pink cheeks and enthusiastic exploration helped to make them fun to read.

There was a hint of drama due to the fact that people seem to want to kill Radford. He’s become one villain’s obsession to the exclusion of all else. The villain’s demise was rather unusual and contrary and a means only a lawyer could pull off. I’ve never seen that technique used before either, so Ms. Chase has to be given credit for high creativity.

I have no idea if the historical aspects of this story are accurate or not; I’m more concerned about whether or not the plot works, it does, whether or not I liked meeting the main characters, I did, and if I enjoyed how the author wrapped up the story, I totally did. It was complete, satisfying and a combination of humorous, bittersweet and romantic. As long as readers don’t mind a wordsmith barrister for a hero, then Dukes Prefer Blondes should definitely be given a try. It has its moments of sheer creative genius and plot twists that make reading the novel worth the time.

First impressions set the stage for some great dialogue and a journey neither Lasham nor Margaret foresaw.

Ms. Frampton also drew a very sad and stilted picture of her hero, the Duke of Lasham. He’s proper, responsible and he’s never had any true fun or time for frivolous frolic in his youth. He’s a shadow of the man he should be. Enter the very unconventional Margaret. I had a ball watching her slowly but surely open up the hero’s eyes to another world he knew about but never understood. Margaret makes it come alive with a relevancy that changes his perception, turning him into a man of action, especially when he begrudgingly performs a few heroic deeds along the way. He simply can’t resist the heroine no matter what predicament she drags him into.

One of the most effective and clever scenes were the ones where Margaret took Lasham on excursions of “adventure”. It’s during those scenes that I saw the hero’s character evolve, watched their relationship overcome challenges and grow, and it’s also when their love blossomed. I think that’s when I fell a little in love with Lasham myself. In those pursuits they both saw wonderful things about each other, and other aspects which made them flawed, vulnerable and human. It’s also where I found most of the romantic moments throughout the novel. I enjoyed every single one.

For fans who like the bedroom door open enough to enjoy confirmation that Laham was totally, completely under passion’s sway, they’ll be gratified by his complete seduction of Margaret and her wild and satisfying response. They might have differences of opinion on many things but in the bedroom, they are quite energetic and wonderful together.

Another cute addition that Ms. Frampton added was the tale of Georgiana and the Dragon which was told in a few paragraphs before each chapter. That was equally entertaining and I chortled heartily with the publisher’s final plea. Margaret, like her creator, Ms. Frampton, flaunts convention and tells the tale their way and knows how to keep their audiences enthralled.

One-Eyed Dukes Are Wild was one of most romantically satisfying books I’ve read in a while. I think it was how Ms. Frampton presented the Duke of Lasham. I just wanted to hug him and love him all over; he’s such a wonderful man but he never had the chance to fly. Margaret gave him figurative wings and the rest was pure magic. This was a great read.

Lucy, the heroine, is faced with obeying the edicts of her parents, and dying inside, or taking the path less traveled, one she believes a barely known aunt actually lived. She was bequeathed diaries and a cottage and as far as she’s concerned, Lucy is going to choose to live the grand life of a spinster. The one thing that Lucy does to Thomas is make him feel. She challenges him, she thwarts him and she beguiles him to the point that he starts imagining seductive scenarios and having intriguing thoughts about having his way with her. It scares him silly, yet, he can’t stay away. That, of course, is too bad because Lucy wants nothing whatsoever to do with him, and that is another plot conflict that was rather fun to watch unfold. How she goes from not trusting him and despising him, to craving him is quite entertaining.

I waffled back and forth about whether or not her parents truly loved her or were using her as a pawn. I think it was a little bit of both, but I’ll let other readers decide for themselves. Certainly the author provided plenty of scenes and info to support both views. Eventually, there is mini HEA of a sort regarding that plot conflict, and I found its delivery engaging. The Spinster’s Guide to Scandalous Behavior is very much a character driven romance. Lucy was a bit too stubborn at times and I felt she should have given in just a bit earlier, like half a chapter’s worth, but then again, she wouldn’t be Lucy if she did cave. She’s quite the firecracker.

I liked the many humorous moments, some of the towns people, especially the orphans, and I very much enjoyed watching Lucy discover the many people in real life that she had only read about in her aunt’s diaries. That she knows their secrets when they don’t know her at all was a very clever bit of writing. I enjoyed seeing the heroine try to dig herself out of a hole when she said something about an event she should not nor could not have known. There were many pink-cheeked moments that made me smile.

Ms. McQuiston has written a charming, entertaining and clever romance that I very much enjoyed. The heroine has such an adventurous spirit that she compliments Thomas’s pragmatic and almost proper mien. The hero is Lucy’s rudder and rock, and she’s his life’s spice and dreams of adventure. Between the two of them, they make a miracle happen, and that’s about as romantic as it gets. The Spinster’s Guide to Scandalous Behavior is a book that is easy for me to recommend because it made me care for both Lucy and Thomas, and that’s a good thing.

They have forced Isabella to become the perfect woman in her dress, manners, and conduct. Initially, Isabella appears to be little more than a pleasant, vapid puppet, willing to perform any task her parents set out for her, including becoming engaged to the former Duke, a man she loathed. I came to see that Isabella’s younger sister was being used as leverage, and any disobedience from Isabella will be unfortunate for Margaret, the one person she loves dearly. I had to admire Isabella’s lack of selfishness, which I originally believed was weakness.

So, two strangers agree to marry in only two weeks’ time. Isabella’s parents are truly loathsome, they have no regard for either of their daughters feelings or desires. Isabella has been so browbeaten, that Nicholas’ attempts to get to know her are met with the social perfection that she has cultivated, making her appear to be nothing more than a beautiful doll with little substance. Nicholas, however, has hidden depths that surprised me, based on the lifestyle he has been living. He chooses to give Isabella time to get to know him after their marriage, since she seems terrified of what happens in bed (thanks to a lovely lecture from her shrew of a mother). Nicholas uses his charm to slowly woo her, and bring the real person under all that perfection to the surface.

This book was a quick read, and a feel-good pure delight. I had to laugh at Nicholas keeping track of how long it had been since he had sex. He is the epitome of the reformed rake, and I adored him. It was wonderful to watch Isabella come into her own as a person, and to blossom from Nicholas’ care of her. I also enjoyed seeing her stand up to her parents. I love to read a story that is mostly about the developing romance, and this fits the bill. Megan Frampton has become one of my auto read authors. I know that I can count on her books for lots of smiles and a heartfelt romance. Put Up Your Duke definitely has those qualities, and is my favorite of hers – so far.

The romance is front and center with the focus strongly aimed at Harek and Camille. They made for an interesting couple.

Ms. Hill continues her tradition of clever Viking quips, funny puns and sexual innuendo. This author loves to play with the written word and some of the dialogue, both inner and verbal, was hilarious and truly inspired. All her characters practice a certain form of wit that can be endearing, annoying, (to the other protagonist, with giggle-worthy results) and sometimes insightful. It’s the repartee between the main characters and secondary characters that oftentimes provides the most interesting clues about the hero and heroine’s personalities.

There were some important secondary characters and some that were on stage only to illustrate a point or move the story along. Each and every person in the story had a reason for being there, even if it’s only to have a door slammed in their face. I liked that part.

I can only think of three areas where I think the story fell a bit flat and that was the island and the decision about the undiscovered item, and then the scene when the binding slipped. I’m wondering if the editor really thought that whole interaction through, because I found it inappropriate. Granted, Herek had some clever lines during the process but all I kept thinking about was who was involved. It was explained, true, but still, its handling didn’t sit right with me.

I enjoyed reading about all the sensual hijinks that Harek and Camille explored while they were falling in love. Ms. Hill always has her heroes and heroines have fun during sex and Even Vampires Get the Blues delivers the smiles. Each scene has a bit of dialogue, laughter and the requisite Viking S Spot. I wish I knew how to find it; frankly I’m envious of the heroines.

Even Vampires Get the Blues is an action-filled quick read that was greatly entertaining. I liked Camille’s personality and Harek’s preoccupation with her. If I had to choose one of them as being the most interesting and well-rounded, I’d pick Camille. Her conflict, both familial and personal, was easy to connect with. There’s a lot to like about this novel but my sincerest wish is that somehow, fact would follow fiction, and a certain group would get their comeuppance as only a Vangel could deliver. But how was the author going to handle it knowing how the heroine feels about her being a wife? Interesting ploy and it worked.

And, of any hero in the series, Justin Bricker is the perfect hero to be in such a romantic pickle because in all the books in the series, he sort of had it easy but in About a Vampire, his free ride has come to a screeching halt. I was completely entertained by his confused and confounded situation. I mean, he knows he has to respect her wishes and her vows, he knows that he can’t interfere with a mortal’s marriage and even knowing all of that doesn’t stop him from imagining, conniving, yearning and trying to come up with clever solutions that fail at every turn. That is, until he comes up with a plan.

Readers of my reviews know how much I’m in disfavor of highly detailed sexual dream sequences. I consider them fillers and a waste of space. However, Ms. Sands has cured that failing with shared dreaming. In those kinds of dreams, two protagonists are experiencing the same things and are affected by them simultaneously. That means they create ripples of effect in their waking lives and I thoroughly approve of that approach. Shared dreams do have an effect on their relationship and plot movement, as such, they are worth reading every single spicy moment because there are details not to be missed that are relevant later on.

Unlike many books in the Argeneau series, there are no villains to combat and no one to rescue in dramatic fashion; this is a solid character driven romance. The fact that Justin turned his life mate, a woman who was already married, is the biggest kind of personal conflict a story could have. How the author managed to get around that ginormous hurdle is a feat of great imagination and storytelling genius.

Some readers might think it ‘convenient’ in the way the conflict was ultimately resolved, but I found it fits with my needs as a romance reader. I want the happy ever after, and I want a tidied up, all threads accounted for, kind of ending especially when a story is not a cliff hanger. Ms. Sands satisfied that need and that’s good enough for me.

About a Vampire is as sexy, fun, entertaining and delightful as a reader could wish. Fans should get plenty of chuckles at Bricker’s expense, especially in light of all his past shenanigans. Holly is really cute and her history is rather interesting. It’s that personal history that lends itself to the belief in the final outcome. Holly is Justin Bricker’s life mate, and it’s a wonderful thing. I definitely recommend this story to new and established fans alike.

Greer is the hero and as a man, I liked him. As a hero, he certainly filled the role nicely. He too, is unconventional. The story sometimes was told through his point of view as well. He’s not the type to demean a woman but to celebrate her strengths and respect them. He still believes that a woman has her place in the keep, at a man’s side and in his bed, but it’s tempered with appreciation for what a woman, a lady, brings to the relationship. Because of that attitude his reaction wasn’t the same as other men’s which threw off Saidh time and time again. I liked that he could surprise her. Then again, some of his surprises were a bit silly and fun – like the part with the letter. When I think about it, it was a rather sweet, impetuous and goofy thing for him to do but seeing he was thinking with the wrong body part, well, that just made it adorable. Of course Greer couldn’t know just what kind of Pandora’s Box he opened by doing that. The story was good and solid before that, but after? Giggles galore and a rapid uptake in the plot momentum.

There were some important secondary characters that ran the gamut of my liking or my distrusting them in equal measure. As the mystery comes close to being solved, truths and secrets are revealed. One is sad, the other interesting and one is shocking. This book is truly a fascinating page turner.

I think the one thing that bothered me was that I could never figure out how to pronounce the heroine’s name. It was like a thorn in my brain. I settled on Sadie and my brain was happy with that. Another thing that I question was Alpin. Do eight year olds really have that kind of introspection and wisdom? If I hadn’t been told his age, I would have guessed his age as more tween than anything.

All in all, The Highlander Takes a Bride is a novel that delivers a suspense filled story making the romance that much more powerful. Both Greer and Saidh prove their mettle to each other by overcoming and dealing with the many conflicts, threats and surprises that come their way. There’s a lot of humor and cuteness to soften the harshness of their situation which is a strength in this novel. My favorite part is when Saidh is introduced to physical pleasure by Greer. Her response is delightful and her enthusiasm totally grin-worthy. Watching them fall in love is a ton of fun.

The Highlander Takes a Bride gets a huge and happy recommend from me. It’s great entertainment.

As his household and his own health improves, Philippe begins to pay more attention to the lady who made these miracles occur.

Rarely have I ever fallen in love with both the hero and heroine so completely and so quickly. Elise’s one mistake changed the course of her whole life. Yet, though her lover and her family turned away from her, and fate was definitely not kind, she retained her strength of character, her convictions, her compassion, and her kindness. She’s a wonderful mother, and is raising her son to be kind and full of joy. Philippe, while a product of his noble upbringing, is never unkind, or consciously “top-lofty.” His reserve and occasional anger are caused by his situation and his limitations. He does retain an air of command around Elise as her employer, but it’s not meant as belittling. They begin to converse, and soon, each is taking pleasure in being able to coax a smile (or an “almost” smile) from the other. I was delighted when Elise finally drew a full joyful laugh from Philippe.

There were so many wonderful scenes, small moments that added up to their falling in love. One in particular that I love is when Elise catches a servant about to steal one of the objects Philippe managed to smuggle out France. She is so passionate and eloquent in her defense of Philippe, that I was hoping he was in the background able to hear it. And he was. And it was beautiful.

Philippe understands love for his family, but he can’t define the feelings he has for Elise. Love toward a woman is a foreign concept to him. He can’t quite comprehend his jealousy toward the man who is the father of her child. Since Elise has been in love once before, she recognizes what is happening to her. She knows that she is a passionate woman, and that she’s in danger of making a second mistake. She finds the strength to refuse Philippe’s advances. Philippe feels hurt by her rejection, but feels confident that she will soon become his lover. Observing Philippe eventually come to the realization of what “home” and “love” truly mean was magnificent.

While the time period covered by this book was relatively short, the characterizations were done in great depth, and the romance progressed slowly and believably. It Started With a Scandal was so well written that I resented time I had to spend away from the book to attend to things like work. The words just flowed, and I was truly enchanted by this heartwarming, passionate, and romantic book. Everything about this book worked for me, and it is my favorite of all the excellent works penned by Julie Anne Long. Though it’s early in the year, I can guarantee this will be on my “Best of 2015” list, and it receives my highest recommendation.
