Innkeeper Maureen O’Dowd lives to cook and bake, spoils her family and friends, and is an expert at keeping secrets, especially about the man who’s held her heart for years.

How can these two fiercely private people reveal their feelings for one another without destroying the friendship they already have? And if they’re successful, will another secret, if revealed, drive a wedge between Maureen and Lucas that can never be repaired?

I’m just going to be blunt and get right to the point. This is the best series I’ve read in a long time. It’s right up there with the Drake Sisters series by Christine Feehan and the Mackenzie Family series by Linda Howard.

When reviewing, there are many components in a narrative that I’m looking for. How developed and relatable were the cast of characters? Did the plot maintain my interest and flow at a reasonable pace with unexpected twists while keeping its realistic integrity? How was the chemistry between the hero and heroine? Did they receive their happily ever after? Were there any loose threads? Particularly from my point of view I want to laugh and feel a book glow for hours after finishing the book. It’s a bonus if I can add another hero to my list of book boyfriends. When I’m reading a series I want to feel that “coming home” sensation. The heartwarming feeling of being reunited with cherished friends and family.

It’s not often I can claim that a book meets all my criteria for what I consider a best book or best series. It is my honor to claim Baked with Love by Peggy Jaeger hit all my feel good spots. The Match in Heaven series has left a lasting impression on me. Yes, each book can be read as a standalone but I would not recommend it. The three together put any Hallmark show to shame. I’d like to see the series put into a movie.

I wish the characters were real and that I could meet them. I want to go stay at their inn. I’m a huge fan of Peggy Jaeger after reading several of her books.

The romance in this story is between Maureen and Lucas. I was waiting to read their story and I’m thrilled it was worth the wait. I can’t rave enough about how much I loved this book and the series. It’s a perfect Christmas present for your friends who love to read romance. This book will join my others on my book keeper list.

Holiday Heart Wishes by Lucinda Race

When social media director Vera Davis loses her job in the city, she takes her adorable, goofy rescue pup and heads home for the holidays, to her sweet hometown of Dickens. She’s hoping to move in with her mom and start a new business. But her drive is interrupted when she rescues a handsome, snowbound stranger stranded by side of the road.

Newspaper reporter Tony Barbee may be a stranger to Vera, but Dickens is his hometown, too. He’s come to spend Christmas with the uncle who raised him. But Vera and Tony are in for a surprise when they find her mother and his uncle living together. Aren’t they moving too fast?

Tony and Vera share something besides relatives in a blossoming romance: a tradition that when they see the Christmas tree in the gazebo on the village green—a scene right out of a Norman Rockwell painting—they should make a Christmas wish. Though they resist their own growing attraction to one another, Christmas is a time of surprises and gifts, and the unexpected answer to a heartfelt holiday wish may bring Vera and Tony the greatest gift of all…

Visibility was down to zero. What made Vera think driving home tonight was the best idea? She hunched closer to the steering wheel, trying to peer through the blanket of snow. A better plan would have been to wait until morning, when at least she could see. But when the going gets tough, the only place she wanted to go was home. With her bags packed in the trunk and her sweet rescue pup, Mollie, riding shotgun, she should be home in less than a half hour.

Up ahead, there was a dark mound on the shoulder of the road. Oh shoot. It was a truck and the hood was up. She slowed, not that she was going fast; it was more like a gentle glide to a stop. She pressed the passenger window button and it slid down. Snow fell inside and Mollie blinked at her.

“Hey, are you okay?”

A dark-haired hunk appeared from under the hood. He held up his hand in greeting.

His smile was slow and easy, which gave her heart an unexpected flutter.

“Thanks for stopping. I figured I’d be out here all night and turn into a popsicle.”

Mollie’s tail began to thump against the seat. She was never this excited with strangers. This guy was definitely someone she would like to have met back in the city.

He leaned into the window. “I’m Tony Barbee.”

She gave a little wave. “Nice to meet you. I’m Vera.”

“Any chance you can give me a lift into Dickens? I think my alternator is dead. I’ve got no power.”

She looked into the blinding snow ahead of her. She couldn’t just agree to pluck a stranger from the side of the road on a dark and wintry night.

“Hey, I get it. Strange guy. Not the best of ideas.” He took a step back. “Any chance you could call a tow truck? My cell died too.”

“Sounds like you’re having a tough day.” She gave him a tentative smile; she knew how that felt. “I’ll do one better. What if I park behind you and wait while the truck comes? This way, you won’t get hit from behind. Take it from me, your truck is virtually invisible until you’re right on top of it.”

He gave her a snow-melting smile. “That sounds great. Thanks.” He pointed to his truck. “I’m gonna wait in there. No sense getting even more covered with snow.”

She called the Dickens Police Department and the dispatcher said someone would be out soon. After backing her car up, Vera waited in its warmth, flashers on. Mollie, her goofy retriever mix, looked at her from her comfy plush bed in the passenger seat as if to say they were warm but what about the other guy?

“I’m not going out there. You watch the news with me. It’s full of crazy people.” She shook her head. Here she was having a conversation with her dog about a man who might be freezing in his truck. “We’ll give it ten minutes and if no one shows up to help, like the tow truck, I’ll invite him to get into the backseat.” She glanced at Mollie. “Acceptable?”

The pup lay her head down on her paws and closed her eyes.

10 Things Most People Don’t Know About Me by Dexter C. Channing – Guest Blog and Giveaway

10 Things Most People Don’t Know About Me
This is quite a funny topic to write about because most people don’t know anything about me. I’ve been called a crazy, an imposter (not quite sure who I’m supposed to be, to be honest), an enigma, amongst other things. They’re the kinder ones. I admit, I like the enigma one, because I don’t really like people to know the real me, so be prepared for everything I tell you about me to be a red herring.

I think the drive in the modern age for people to know everything about everybody is part of what I resent about technology. You log into a computer for instance, and someone somewhere who created the operating system knows you’ve just done that. Then they know where you live because of the IP address giving them location information. Everyone’s movements can be disseminated and examined electronically, so that the twenty first century affords no-one any privacy.

I like my privacy too. I’m very much a ‘close the door and take off the external persona’ type of person. Maybe that is something to do with my job, I’m not sure. People know what they need to know about me in my type of profession – I’m not a full time writer – and I guess that’s the first thing you’ve learnt about me! Privacy is an important commodity and it’s being eroded by the very topic which I wrote about in my two books, Virus and Resistance.

In the UK, for instance, they have this Trace and Test technology, where they have an app that you (by choice at the moment, but that’s gonna change, you watch this space) download onto your phone and it basically records your movements. They dress it up as something else, but in actual fact, they have tabs on you. They aren’t interested in whether you are in a high risk Covid area, they’re interested in where you are going and what you’re spending your money and your time doing. It’s all about control.

I don’t like that (is that thing two?). I don’t like the idea of some sort of big brother industry taking that much of an interest in me that they know when I’ve gone to the john. It’s intrusive. People are having their civil liberty eroded in front of them, and the worst of it is – they are letting it happen!

Okay so, we’ve got two things.

Number three – surprise, surprise – I live alone. I much prefer my own company to anyone else’s. I live by this motto – ‘Trust No-One’ and it works. Trust, once it’s been destroyed by someone, is a hard thing to find again. Once it’s gone, it’s gone.

Actually, scrap number three, that’s a lie, I forgot the cat. I live with my cat. I like cats. That’s number four, by the way. In fact, I much prefer animals to people. Let’s face it, when was the last time an animal let you down?

I’m doing pretty well, here, I’m on number five already. I love the wilderness and people who think they know me are going to tell you that I prefer to live in the city, because of its anonymity and that would be correct. But preferring to live somewhere doesn’t mean you have to like it. You’re more exposed in the country. Everyone knows everyone else.

Okay, so I’m running out of things I know about myself! Number six, okay, my mother (yes, I have one, all you doubters!) was a beauty queen. I remember being about ten and awkward and gawky, which I think I still am, but there was my mother, elegant, beautiful, sophisticated. All the things I’m not.

Number seven – As a child I could speak another language, I mean other than English, but I’m not telling you which one. After my grandparents died, I had no-one else to converse with, so I lost the ability. I can remember some phrases, but not many.

This is getting harder because hardly anyone knows me anyway. Number eight – I’m an only child. I think my folks had me and decided not to risk it again.

I’m almost there, I know myself a little more now, too. So, number nine, let’s see. One of my great, great grandparents was Norwegian. That’s about all I know myself, although I have been to Norway. I’ve been to all the Scandinavian countries. Marvelous places.

Right, we’re done – number ten – I really wish I could fall in love. This last one is a shocker, considering I’m such an introvert. I’m probably the least romantic person on the planet, too. But I think that it would be nice to fall in love and for someone to love me back. Have I been in love before? Once. It ended badly, very badly, I guess there’s no such thing as a happy ending, is there?

In New Normal – Resistance, a deadly pandemic is sweeping across the globe. Country after country is disintegrating into a lawless, terrified conclusion as it soon becomes apparent that there is a fate worse than death. Violence and discord stalk the streets; governments are beginning to introduce martial law and curfews in a futile attempt to regain control of a world thrown into disarray by a silent, unseen killer.

Jolyon Jones, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, knows that it is a race against time to find a vaccine for this highly infectious virus before the consequences wipe out humanity. He also knows that the virus is not the only killer. Small pockets of resistance are slowly emerging; survivors ready to fight not only against the virus, but against each other.

In the midst of the battle for survival, the faithful know that their wait for the Second Coming is nearly over. They know that He is here again. But who is He and will He be able to stop the virus before science reaches an apocalyptic solution?

Resistance is the second in Dexter C. Channing’s New Normal Trilogy. The first being New Normal – Virus, which was released earlier in the year. The final instalment is due to be released at Easter 2021.

Across the Atlantic, early evening sunlight bathed the White House in an auroral light, shimmering in the gentle breeze which sighed across the velvet green lawns. Inside the Oval Office, nobody cared for the view, despite how peaceful and ordinary it looked.

The President was wearing his most mulish look as the Secretary of State and the Defence Secretary reeled from his latest revelation. For a moment, only the distant wail of sirens could be heard in the thick silence which surrounded them following the President’s declaration. The sound mingled with the groan of despair from the Defence Secretary, an involuntary reaction to what he had just listened to.

‘Mr President, Sir,’ the Defence Secretary looked at the other man and felt like smashing his fist into the supercilious expression he found staring back at him. Did the President not understand what was happening and how there was a need for unity, not discord within global relationships? Obviously, he did not! ‘Could I ask you if Professor Benjamin did this without coercion?’

Spreading his arms out in a gesture that indicated he did not know or understand, the President replied, ‘All I know is that I have been told of a call made to Beyler School of Medicine from Professor Benjamin’s office. Who instructed him to make the call, I don’t know, but I do know that if there is a second spike, another “mutation”, then Watpharm had better understand it will need Gileath to bail it out of its fucking mess, pissing about with some bloody college students and those yellow skinned freaks!’

‘This has been done as retaliation because what, Watpharm didn’t want to set up shop with an American Company? Jesus fucking Christ!’ The Defence Secretary’s fist came down on the desk, making the other two men jump. ‘We’re in the middle of a fucking world changing crisis, Mr President, Sir! We have the threat of extinction and we have got non-humans running amok on the fucking planet and some idiot professor wants some more business for his company?’

‘This administration gives Gileath a hell of a lot of dollars,’ the President glared at his Defence Secretary, ‘and I don’t want those dollars wasted! Working with Watpharm might also go some way to restoring America’s credibility on the world stage.’

‘I think what the Defence Secretary is trying to say, Mr President, is that if there is a second spike or another mutation of this current outbreak, then the world stage may not have much of an audience left to play to, Sir.’ The Secretary of State intervened.

The President threw his papers down onto his desk and stormed out of the office wearing a truculent expression.

The Secretary of State shook his head. ‘Sometimes, the thought crosses my mind that a couple of cups of disinfectant or bleach wouldn’t go amiss.’

They were both thinking of a disastrous video link press conference which had been held towards the end of April. It had been beamed around the globe, one of the few broadcasts that were made that day and America still hadn’t recovered from the backlash. Both men looked to the door, which the President had just slammed.

‘How much is a bottle of Clorax these days?’ Asked the Defence Secretary and they both burst out laughing, amazed that they still could.

About the Author: Dexter C Channing is something of a mystery to the literary world – and indeed, the team at Just Jane Publishing has never actually met this author, having been introduced through another writer during the Covid 19 Lockdown.

The elusive author prefers to remain an enigma to everyone, simply stating a love of city life as opposed to the country because “it’s easier to disappear in a big city where nobody knows your real self”. That real self is “single, not available” and prefers being alone to the “ruinous pathway of a love affair”.

Fact, fantasy and science all combine in this author’s often dark writing style, which takes you through conspiracy theories to conclusions you’d rather not reach in the real world. Or maybe, as Dexter says, you’re already there.

Is Dexter C Channing an American? There’s a possibility, but then anything is possible, if you believe what goes on in Channing’s imagination, often taking us to places we’d rather not go. It’s clear at some point that Channing did live in America, and still has some links to Miami and Deerfield Beach.

More of late, Channing has been residing in England and has actually allowed the team at Just Jane Publishing access to a list of favourite places which include Chesterfield in Derbyshire, Liverpool, and a surprising one, given the penchant for city living – a tiny village called Kettlewell, in Yorkshire.

What does a mysterious author who nobody really knows do when they’re not writing? Channing watches. Things. Events. People. Then they get written about. Is Channing a one trick pony? Far from it. There are links with law, property, and a love of music, which is always in the background when Channing is writing.

“Virus” was the first of Dexter C Channing’s world-changing trilogy of novellas. “Resistance” is the second in the series, and the final, concluding book, “Resurrection” will be published by Just Jane Publishing around Easter, 2021.

A sassy detective struggles to maintain her integrity in a multi-species world but finds herself choosing sides in a vampire-shifter war instigated by a human politician.

CALLIE is a sassy detective, known for her attitude and her ability to endanger her partners. While investigating a senator, she stumbles upon suck-bloods (her word) and a canister, embroiling herself in a diabolical plot older than her grandfather. Trying to stop her dying sister from an unlikely conversion, she falls for an ancient suck-blood and discovers that she’s more than human.

GABRIEL is centuries old but has withdrawn from society, preferring to spend his years avoiding vamp politics and reading ancient Greek texts. Asked to rescue Callie as a favor, he doesn’t expect her to tempt him with her scent, her delicious blood and her honor. When another vampire abducts her, Gabe must use his allies and their skills to find her before she suffers through a conversion dooming her to an eternity of enslavement.
One thing you should take care to know is that viagra sales in uk it is not uncommon, it is reported that the condition can be thoroughly discussed along with the system of procedure. The passion between them is potent, their love empowering as Callie learns that controlling everything won’t bring her happiness. Gabe discovers that to truly live he must lose his heart. What follows is the merging of vampire and human, of lust and love, of honor and forgiveness whilst preventing the suck-bloods and beasts from fighting a war they didn’t start.

In a world where vampires and shifters co-exist – in a fashion – next to humans, it would take something pretty spectacular to bring all of them together. Say… a mysterious canister and the blood of someone that changes with what she eats maybe? Yep, that should do it.

Callie has always listened to her instincts and they have kept her alive and pretty much unharmed. Gabe is the older brother, the stronger brother, and yet it is Syl who rules. None of that bothers Gabe but once Callie is on the scene, he will do anything to protect her – even if it means taking his brother’s throne.

I really enjoyed this first book in the series. It leads you to a new world where the rules have changed. I enjoyed getting to know Callie and found her to be a strong, upfront, and sassy heroine. However, I also found parts of the story with her to be slightly confusing as her mindset isn’t always the most stable.

There is an overall story arc that I’m sure will be covered more in future books. For now, though, this story was enough to give you a fulfilling read whilst still leaving you wanting more. The only downsides for me were the confusion already mentioned and the epilogue. I won’t say too much as I don’t want to ruin it for others but, suffice it to say, part of the epilogue was perfect. And the other part was just meh. I’ve seen that storyline before, just thrown it in at the end, and it never seems to come out as it should.

Overall, this was a great read with a wonderful cast of characters, smooth pacing, and a world I wish to return to. Definitely recommended by me.

10 Best Writing Practices by D. Lieber – Guest Blog and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. D. Lieber will be awarding a hand carved tree of life tarot/jewelry/keepsake box (carved by DhewaDecor) to a randomly drawn winner (US ONLY) via rafflecopter during the tour. 10 Best Writing Practices that Work for D. Lieber and May Possibly, Perhaps, Could Work for You

1. Always eat breakfast.

2. When you don’t know which way to go with the story, take a shower.

3. Make the story your everyday life. For example, if I am writing a book that takes place in Canada, then I watch Canadian TV shows, movies that take place in Canada, read history books about Canada when I’m not writing, etc. I may even go to Canada for a research trip (which I did, and it was awesome.)

4. Always have noise cancelling headphones on hand, and perfect my murderous glare for when someone (*cough* husband *cough*) interrupts my writing.

5. When rereading, read aloud (and with accents if possible).

6. Need more time for thinking about where the story should go? Make tea.

7. Have an author friend (or a few) to complain to, someone who can talk you off the ledge and send you funny memes/GIFs to cheer you up.

8. Readers appreciate thoroughness. If using foreign language in your books, try to find someone who speaks that language to double check everything. Do not trust Google Translate.

9. Wanting to really capture that scenery description? Go for a walk alone. You will be amazed at what you notice about the sensory stimuli around you. Bring a notebook!

10. Take breaks. Part of being a good writer, is living your life. Your stories will only get better the more experiences you have.

Sawyer looked up just as Eeva stopped short upon entering the living room. She was still in her pajamas: flannel plaid pants with an oversized hoodie and fuzzy socks. Her long, brown hair was dyed a dark green, and it was still messy from sleep.

His heart throbbed in his chest, and he held his breath as he met her deep ocean blue eyes. His memories hadn’t done her justice.

“Hey,” he said lamely. “It’s uh…been a while.” He cleared his throat, his own voice sounding hoarse and uneven in his ears.

She blinked as if she’d forgotten who he was then frowned. “Yeah, I suppose that happens in life… How is…everything? I mean, I hope you and your mom are doing all right.” Her tone was distant and polite. Formal.

His stomach clenched as his raised hopes deflated. “Yeah, everything’s fine. We’re both good. And you?”

“Same.”

As the strained silence grew between them, Sawyer grasped for something to say. Anything. “So…my mom says you’re graduating soon. What are you studying?” He knew very well she was studying history. It didn’t matter that he’d said more times than he could count that he didn’t care. The moment his mother mentioned her, he’d always internalized the information. And he’d taken more than a few glances at her social media profiles over the years, though he’d gotten better about that.

“Eeva!” his mother called, entering the room before they could struggle on in their conversation.

About the Author:D. Lieber is an urban fantasy author with a wanderlust that would make a butterfly envious. When she isn’t planning her next physical adventure, she’s recklessly jumping from one fictional world to another. Her love of reading led her to earn a Bachelor’s in English from Wright State University.

Beyond her skeptic and slightly pessimistic mind, Lieber wants to believe. She has been many places—from Canada to England, France to Italy, Germany to Russia—believing that a better world comes from putting a face on “other.” She is a romantic idealist at heart, always fighting to keep her feet on the ground and her head in the clouds.

Lieber lives in Wisconsin with her husband (John) and cats (Yin and Nox).

The fact that they were the last two siblings in the litter explained Ailey’s reluctance to separate them.

“Everything you’ll need for them is in the house,” he said, taking her keys from her and unlocking the door, since she showed no sign of doing it on her own. She held a kitten in each hand. “Joanna took care of all of that this evening while we were gone. Ailey and I picked them up yesterday while you were working. They spent the night with me last night. They’re really good roommates.”

Inside, Jed poured them each a glass of wine while Fee got acquainted with Mistletoe and Holly, the names she gave the fuzzy kittens immediately. When they’d fallen asleep on the cushioned bed on the hearth of the pretty but completely nonfunctioning fireplace in the living room, Fee sat across the table from Jed. She mopped at the tears that insisted on rolling down her cheeks.

“I never wanted Ailey to feel responsible for me, but she was worried about me being alone through the holidays. I hate that.”

“No, you don’t, and you’ve got black gunk on your face. It means you raised a good kid. What more would you want from her than that she be a compassionate human being?” Like her mother.

“Oh, good grief.” She went down the hallway to the bathroom, coming back a few minutes later with a scrubbed-clean face. “That’s what I get for trying to look good for a date.” She blushed as soon as she’d said the words, and looked around as if she was searching for something to unsay them with.

Jed got up, going over to where she stood and taking her into his arms. For a moment, he just held her, giving all of her curves time to adjust to his planes and angles. Then he kissed her, taking his time about it, thinking…no, not thinking at all. Just feeling. It had been so long since he’d held a woman he lo…he cared about. Too long, Heather would say, but she’d know, too, what he’d been waiting for.

“You were my best and last love,” she’d told him once during her illness, holding his hand in her thin one and laying her fingers up against his. “I’m not going to be yours. I’m good with that.”

It should have felt wrong to let go of one love while holding another, but it didn’t. For the first time since Heather’s death, Jed gave credence to the thought that he might someday be happy again. Not yet, but someday.

“The tree-lighting at the Common is tomorrow night,” he said. “Want to go with me?”

She nodded. “Most of the stores are opening back up afterward. A couple of the Klatchers are going to open Silver Threads after the lighting and man the cutting table. Ailey and I had planned to go.” She smiled, but there was an extra shine in her eyes.

“Maybe you should kiss me again.”

“Maybe I should.”

Five Inspirational Places

I’m away on holiday at the moment – the first one of 2020 because Covid-19 has cancelled the other two – so I thought I’d share five places which I find really inspirational. I should say that, although I love all five of these places, there are other places I love equally or more, but there are ones which really get the creative juices flowing for me! I’ve written them in order of north to south: three are in Scotland and two are in England.

St Magnus Cathedral, Orkney

This massive red sandstone building dominates the Kirkwall skyline as you drive into the town, and this is my earliest memory of it. In fact, I never set foot in the building when we were living in Orkney, but saw the interior for the first time when we returned on holiday in 2001. It is full of fascinating memento mori gravemarkers, which absolutely fascinate me, and the stained glass in absolutely magnificent. Perhaps the most memorable and unique thing about St Magnus Cathedral is the smell: warmth and love, which speaks of the years of Orkney which it has witnessed.

Lose yourself in the sights and scents, while you listen to the sounds of people from around the globe gathering together to admire the magnificent cathedral.

Castle Sinclair Girnigoe, Caithness

This building is just a short distance from where I live, and I’ve got many happy memories of it, like the time we met the founder of the North Carolina Opera Company there, or when we bumped into a group of people dressed as Knights Templar. It is the southernmost castle on Sinclair Bay and is believed to be haunted by the ghost of a man whose brother locked him up with salted meat and no water to drink. When his brother came to gloat over him, the incarcerated man attempted to strangle him with the chains he wore.

Coupled with this spooky heritage and the fact that the castle is built on the edge of a cliff, there’s no shortage of inspiration to be found at the castle.

Killiecrankie, Perthshire

This is where I am for this holiday. In autumn, there is not a more beautiful place in the world. The pass and the surrounding hills have burst into shades of golden, yellow, orange and red. There’s a good chance that you’ll see a red squirrel as you venture and the birdlife is fantastic too, along with evidence of pine martens, badgers and otters. In 1689, there was a battle in the pass, as the Jacobites won a battle which lost them the war, as “Bonnie Dundee” (their leader) was killed early in conflict and they had no one else with his skills as a tactician.

Like Sinclair Girnigoe, it is the mixture of natural and cultural heritage which gives this place the wealth of inspiration it has on offer. Take a camera, but make sure you spend time just soaking in the feeling as well!

Pendragon Castle, Cumbria

This place actually inspired the story that is my current work in progress: a story all about King Arthur’s foster-brother, Kaye. According to legend, it was the castle of King Uther, Arthur’s father, who attempted to divert the Eden so that it would provide the moat for his castle. His subsequent failure to do so was preserved in rhyme. In actual fact, its most famous resident was Sir Hugh de Morville, one of the knights who killed Thomas a Becket in 1170. On his return to Pendragon Castle, he found he was haunted by the fact that the ridge of the nearby hill resembled a recumbent man wearing a mitre!

The castle is usually surrounded by sheep more that tourists, which means you usually get the place to yourself. There isn’t that much to see anymore, but there’s nothing like a good ruin for getting the creative juices flowing.

Thornton Abbey, North Lincolnshire

I feel like I’m pinching this one, because it is such an important place for my sister’s book, Taking Wing. When the monasteries were dissolved, Henry VIII liked the architecture of Thornton Abbey so much that he decided to turn it into a college. Eventually though, it fell into disuse and disrepair, and now the gatehouse is the only part which hints at its former majesty. It too is haunted – by a man who was caught stealing fish from the monk’s pond and who got his head chopped off with a spade!

The way that the imposing gatehouse at Thornton Abbey looms over its surroundings leaves a magical shadow of inspiration around the area: how did the mighty become so fallen?

I’d love to hear about the places which you find inspirational – please tell me in the comments!

Don’t tell anyone, but Kelli spends all her free time listening to folk music. Ok, it’s not what you’d expect from a popular fifteen-year-old, but that’s why she doesn’t want the whole world to know.

They left the inn as the church clock began to chime midday and completed their journey in relative silence. As they neared Arlen Manor, Kelli began to feel a strange sensation of being watched, as though a hundred pairs of eyes were following her wherever she went. Looking carefully, she saw there were sculpted birds in many of the trees: great, black, hideous creatures with round eyes which stared unseeingly and followed her as she passed them by.

“They are crows,” William explained. “Centuries ago, before it was Arlen, the castle which stood here was called Corbie. That’s just another word for crow. According to family legend, when a disaster is about to befall the men of the family, the crows of Corbie Castle can be heard talking to one another.”

Kelli felt a shiver stalk down her spine, and she was grateful when they left the woods and moved up the long driveway to the house, which was a picture of gothic splendour in the late afternoon light. She immediately had the feeling that this was the place she had been meant to find, although she could not explain where the idea came from. Climbing down from the trap, Kelli followed William to the door, and stood behind him as he hammered his fist against it.

Creating the Ideal Writing Space

When I first retired, I assumed I would be writing in my den. Everything was in place: desk, new computer, ergonomic chair, bookcases crammed with craft guides, and inspiring Monet prints on the wall.

Unfortunately, my writing muscles refused to budge.

After several frustrating attempts, I shared my tale of woe with Denise, a new writer friend.

“It’s the wrong room,” Denise said. “It sounds perfect on paper, but it’s not working for you.”

As I let her words sink in, I realized that she was right. A free room with computer access and no distractions sounds like a dream writing space for most wannabe writers. But something fundamental was missing.

The following day, I set the kitchen timer for 60 minutes and sat in front of the computer. I was determined to write something, anything at all. And if that failed, I would sit there until I figured out the problem. I managed to write the date and title before experiencing once again the tyranny of the blank page.

I turned several times in the swivel chair and tried to look out the window. I ended up dragging the chair several feet so I could get a good view of the outdoors.

Issue #1: I didn’t have easy access to a window.

Glancing around the room, I tried to figure out a solution. One of the bookcases would have to be moved so the desk and computer could be next to the window. I squinted and tried to reimagine the décor. It wouldn’t work.

Issue #2: The den was too small to accommodate any changes in décor.

I decided to take a coffee break.

While walking toward the kitchen, I passed by the living/dining area. I glanced around the large room, noting that two-thirds of the opposite wall was taken up by a large window and the balcony. Outside, five majestic trees provide shade and a beautiful view.

If only…

I walked quickly to the other end of the living area and stood in front of the entertainment nook. Without measuring, I knew right away that the desk, computer, and chair would fit. As for the CD player and stand…that could be easily moved.

It didn’t take long to set up in the nook. A friend helped me move the desk and set up the computer. On one of my shopping excursions, I discovered a set of four metallic butterflies for the wall.

With over 900 square feet of space and easy access to the kitchen and balcony, I no longer felt constrained. I could stretch, swivel, and write.

Bliss.

Angelica Delfino takes a special interest in the lives of her three nieces, whom she affectionately calls the daughters of her heart. Sensing that each woman is harboring a troubling, possibly even toxic secret, Angelica decides to share her secrets—secrets she had planned to take to the grave. Spellbound, the nieces listen as Angelica travels back six decades to reveal an incredulous tale of forbidden love, tragic loss, and reinvention. It is the classic immigrant story upended: an Italian widow’s transformative journey amid the most unlikely of circumstances.

Inspired by Angelica’s example, the younger women share their “First World” problems and, in the process, set themselves free.

But one heartbreaking secret remains untold…

As Angelica read the document, she heard several sighs emanating from Bellastrega. While she had grown to like this young woman and trust her judgment when it came to wellness, Angelica was not prepared to abandon her plans. Three women needed to be rescued.

“What if they don’t come?” Bellastrega asked.

“They will come,” Angelica said, smiling confidently.

“It’s still winter, and the roads around here can be treacherous.”

“That won’t stop them.” Angelica smiled at Bellastrega’s discomfort with winter driving. Fearless in her talk, the psychic dreaded going out at any hint of snow. “Not to worry. They’re Northern Ontario girls.”

Bellastrega waved her hands. “So, they get up here, and you share your secrets. Then what?”

“They begin to heal.”

“You can’t expect to solve all their problems in one weekend,” Bellastrega said in a gentler tone. “If you’re not careful, you’ll send them running to their mothers, who won’t hesitate to create unnecessary stress for you.”

From the start, Bellastrega had been determined to eradicate all the unnecessary stress in Angelica’s life. Did she really think she could create a lasting magic bubble?

Since receiving the positive medical report, Bellastrega had redoubled her efforts and started to plan spring and summer excursions. She had added to her meager wardrobe and purchased several decorative items for her room. Each day, she was settling in and becoming more comfortable in her role as a companion. The beautiful thirty-five-year-old woman with Arctic-blue eyes and a stormy past had found sanctuary in Angelica’s house.

Angelica’s thoughts traveled back six decades to her encounter with another set of Arctic-blue eyes. But that woman had been much older and more realistic in her expectations.

“Are you all right?” Bellastrega asked.

“I’m fine,” Angelica said, returning to the present. “I want to start the process. The rest will be up to them.” Angelica felt a sudden wave of fatigue, one she hadn’t experienced in months. This argument was growing old, and she no longer wished to justify her motives. Why couldn’t Bellastrega let it go?

Evidence that love stories come in many different forms, The Menu is a spiritual journey involving more than just a man and a woman; it is a modern-day tale that reaches far beyond the boundaries of reason.

I’ve not read anything before by Steven Manchester, so this was a new to me author. This story is original. Phinn is in the world and trying to find his way. The writing moves along just fine and the characters are interesting.

This book does deal with abortion, so it might be a trigger for some readers. It’s inspirational in that the character of Phinn talks to his version of god while going along his way, but it’s also a bit of a fantasy story in that he’s allowed to order what he thinks he wants for a love story.

I liked that the characters aren’t perfect and I appreciated that they can’t always get what they want. It made me wonder while I read what I might have chosen had I the opportunity to pick from a menu. So in that respect, it does make one think.

This book isn’t what I’d normally pick for my reading. I like a distinctive line with the romance. The injected spirituality and religion is good, but not my cuppa. I also had a bit of an issue with this being listed as inspirational when there is discussion of romantic relations. I won’t give away spoilers, but this isn’t a sweet book. It’s more of a sensual story and might not be for some readers wanting purely sweet romance.

If you’re looking for a book that makes you think and look at the life, mostly your choices, a little differently, then this might be the book for you. Check it out.

Prologue

When locked up in my room, I can no longer imagine good things.

I take a piece of paper out of my notepad and cut it into small pieces. On each piece, I write: I am Belle. My father is holding me hostage at his home. I sign them all and fold the papers until they become small enough. I then scatter them around the room, under the closet, beneath the mattress, under the carpet, in the cabinets, and inside the drawers.

A few minutes later, I realize that all of the pieces I have hidden could be discovered in one sweep. If something happens to me, I want the police to know about my father. I start again. This time, I cut the paper into larger pieces so I can write a longer message.

My name is Belle Andresson. My father is holding me against my will at our home. My father is dangerous and unpredictable, and if something happens to me, he is to be blamed. Today is the eighth day, and most of the time I am trapped inside my room, with no means of communication.

I hide the papers in places they cannot be found easily: on top of the closet, taped to the curtain, and in a sealed bag in the toilet tank.

My fate is unknown to me. I can only think of escaping to survive, but before escaping, I must know why my father is doing this to me.
