Top Ten Tuesday: Books I Enjoyed that Were Outside My Comfort Zone

Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

Happy Tuesday!  This week is about books I enjoyed that were outside of my comfort zone.  Some of these books I read a long time ago for a class, some I picked up out of curiosity, and some were recommended to me.  I enjoyed them all, and a couple even became favorites!

The Giver by Lois Lowry-I read this for a class in school when I was 14.  I’d never read anything like it, and I was blown away I felt when I finished it.  I immediately read it again on my own.

Animal Farm by George Orwell-I read this in the same class as The Giver, and I still remember how unsettled I felt as I read it.  I’m glad I read it, but it didn’t become a favorite like The Giver.

Star Racers by Martin Felando-This is a fun science fiction read.  I generally read more in the fantasy and paranormal genres so this was a step in a different direction.  It was a pretty fun read!

The Nexus Mirror by N.E. Michael-I recently read this for review and really enjoyed it.  It is a blend of science fiction and fantasy.  Again, I don’t read a lot of science fiction, but I really enjoyed this and am looking forward to the next installment in the series.

The Eyes of the Dragon by Stephen King-My husband recommended this book to me because I enjoy fantasy.  It is the only thing I’ve ever read by Stephen King.  While I don’t feel the need to read any more of his work, I’m glad I read this one.

Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice-I know I’ve mentioned my love of this book before, and it certainly isn’t out of my comfort zone now.  However, when I read it for the first time when I was 16, it was.  I’d never read anything with vampires in it.  I picked it up because I was curious.  I absolutely loved it, and it immediately became a favorite.

When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon-This doesn’t seem like it would be out of my comfort zone, but I actually don’t read a lot of contemporary romance.  I tend to gravitate more toward historical or paranormal romance.  This story was highly enjoyable and I really liked From Twinkle with Love too.  I’m thinking I need to take time to read more contemporaries!

This concludes my list for the week.  I apologize for being a bit short.  I probably could have stretched my list out to ten, but I feel these books were the most memorable for me and best represent what is or used to be out of my comfort zone.  What books have you read out of your comfort zone?  Would any of these make your list?

Comments

  1. Great list! I keep meaning to try When Dimple Met Rishi, and one of these days I need to read some Anne Rice, too.

  2. The cover for The Nexus Mirror really grabs me!

    • I really like it too! It was a very interesting book. You’ll have to let me know if you read it.

Thanks for visiting and commenting. 🙂

  3. A big part of me wants to read Animal Farm. An even bigger part of me is afraid of the unsettled feelings it would invoke in me. Heh.

    • I definitely understand that. As I said, I’m glad I read it, but it isn’t something I would have sought out on my own.

Thank you so much for visiting and commenting. 🙂

  4. I still need to read When Dimple Met Rishi – I’ve heard it’s so good! Animal Farm was one of my favorites in high school, though!

    • When Dimple Met Rishi is so cute! You’ll have to let me know what you think if you read it.

Thanks for visiting and commenting. 🙂

  5. Stephen King is one I could NEVER read! I get scared way too easily LOL

    • I get scared easily too! However, The Eyes of the Dragon is not a horror story. It is a fantasy, which is why my husband recommended I try it. If you enjoy fantasy, you might give it a try someday.

Thanks so much for visiting and commenting. 🙂

  6. The Eyes of the Dragon is one of the two Stephen King books I rec whenever someone says they don’t like horror (the other is The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon). It’s actually the only King book my husband has read, too.

Hah, I read Interview with the Vampire when I was 16 or so, too! Unlike you though, I’ve been obsessed with vampires since I was a kid, so I’d read a ton of vamp fic by then. Still love those first four books though.

    • Yep, I’m definitely not a fan of horror, which is why my husband recommended I try The Eyes of the Dragon.

I agree, the beginning of The Vampire Chronicles is better than some of the later books. It has been a while since I read them. I’d like to take time to re-read them!

Thanks for visiting and commenting. 🙂

  7. When Dimple Met Rishi was a great book. I still have to read From Twinkle With Love, although I did read There’s Something About Sweetie.

    • I haven’t read There’s Something About Sweetie yet! It is on my tbr though.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting. 🙂

  8. THE GIVER surprised me. I wish I’d read it when I was younger. Thanks for visiting my blog.

    • You’re welcome!

Yes, The Giver is definitely a memorable book. It was certainly a defining moment in my reading history!

Thanks for visiting and commenting. 🙂

  9. I’ve thought about reading The Giver, it sounds really interesting so I’m glad you enjoyed it! When Dimple Met Rishi sounds so cute! Great picks. 🙂

    • I’m so glad you enjoyed my list! You’ll have to let me know if you decide to read The Giver or When Dimple Met Rishi.

Thank you for stopping by and commenting. 🙂

  10. The Nexus Mirror looks like a lot of fun. I do like it sometimes when fantasy and SF are blended, that one certainly looks promising!

    • I wasn’t really sure what to expect when I picked it up, but I was pleasantly surprised! You’ll have to let me know what you think if you decide to check it out.

Thanks so much for visiting and commenting. 🙂

  11. These are all ones I have never read myself. Lots of familiar titles though!

    Thanks for visiting my TTT!

    • You’re welcome!

You’ll have to let me know if you decide to read some of these.

Thanks for visiting and commenting. 🙂

  12. I loved From Twinkle with Love. I don’t read tons of contemporaries either. Next year my goal is to read one Stephen King.

  13. I had my issues with it, but When Dimple Met Rishi really is the cutest example of contemporaries!

    • I had a couple issues with it as well, but over all I enjoyed it. It was so cute!

Thank you for stopping by and commenting. 🙂

  14. There was a time I read everything that Anne Rice wrote. Vampires, body snatchers, mummies. Kind of burned out lately.
I read Eyes of the Dragon thinking it would be a good book for my 7th graders, but it’s sexual content wasn’t right in the classroom.

    • I only ever read her Vampire Chronicles. I’m not sure why I never ventured into her other works as I enjoy her style of writing. I can see being burned out on it though.

Thanks so much for visiting and commenting. 🙂

  15. Solid collection of titles here!

  16. Animal Farm is very uncomfortable to read. To be honest, most of his books are.

    • That’s the only book by George Orwell I’ve ever read! Like I said, I’m glad I read it, but I don’t feel the need to read it again or anything else by him.

Thanks so much for visiting and commenting. 🙂

  17. I’d like to read ‘Rishi’ someday because it looks so fun and cuuute! (And I’m all about a good contemporary.) I think I could have put “The Giver” on my list as well because it’s not really my kinda read. But I read it prior to seeing the film, so…

Thanks so much for the visit to Finding Wonderland last week!

    • Rishi is very cute! You’ll have to let me know what you think if you get a chance to read it. I thought it was a lot of fun, and From Twinkle with Love was great too.

Thank you so much for visiting and commenting. 🙂

  18. I haven’t read any of these books (with the exception of Animal Farm), but there are some here I think I’ll search out.

Right now I’m listening to Where the Crawdad’s Sing which isn’t the type of book I read very much. To me it seems more literary historical fiction than mystery. I’m not sure how it’s going to turn out. So it’s outside my comfort zone since I like happy endings.

You’ll have to let me know what you think if you read any of the books on my list. I prefer happy endings as well, but sometimes I’m okay with something bittersweet or open ended.
