Saturday Seven: Mystery Series

To all the folks joining us for Saturday Seven, please don’t forget to leave your link in the linky list at the end of this post.

Today, I’m sharing my seven favorite mystery series. Some are older, some are still going on, but all entertain me.

1. The Cat Who series by Lilian Jackson Braun

My aunt sent me books from the series back in the 1990s and I fell in love. It was the first cozy mystery I’d ever read, and I scooped them all. Yeah, it took me a while to read them, but I never got bored. Sadly, she passed away years ago, and the last book released in 2007.

2. The Alphabet Mysteries by Sue Grafton

I was devastated to hear that she’d passed away before completing “Z”…

3. Chief Inspector Gamache novels by Louise Penny

Set in Canada. Even though they are mysteries a lot of the appeal is the characters involved and getting to know them and see them grow throughout the series.

4. Cormoran Strike Series by Robert Galbraith (aka JK Rowling)

What’s not to like? A damaged hero and how he and his secretary/sidekick develop a relationship while solving crimes. Love!

5. Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich

She’s just funny… but here’s an interesting point.. I don’t like reading the books… but I LOVE the audio books.

6. Grant County series by Karin Slaughter

I devoured these books … right up until she ended one with something so shocking and unexpected and maddening that I stopped. It was years ago, and I haven’t read one since. She actually had to write a very very long letter to her fans explaining why she made that decision and asking us to hang on and she’d show us why it mattered. But I’m a grudge holder. If you aren’t, I’m betting you’ll love them.

7. Aurora Teagarden Mystery Series by Charlaine Harris

Just really good cozies with awesome characters and fun plots. She’s an outstanding author.

What are some mystery series you can recommend? I’m always in the market!

  1. Wow! You must have sent mental vibes, as I listed cozy mystery series that I have enjoyed (and how could I have forgotten Koko and Yum Yum?) I figured I’d do the hard-core mysteries in a different post, but I am intrigued to see both favorites and ones I haven’t tried in your post!

There are SO many cozy mystery series that are amazing … I can’t wait to hit your post and check it out.

  2. I’ve never considered the Stephanie Plum books to be mysteries, really–but they ARE a guilty pleasure.

And I’m also a fan of “The Cat Who…” books!

    • Long and Short Reviews says

The Stephanie Plum books are really silly — I’ve heard the last one isn’t very good, but I’m not there yet, so I’ll just keep moving forward 🙂

      Thanks for stopping by!

Mine are: and not in any particular order!
    1. Stephanie Plum by Janet Evanovich
    2. D.D. Warren by Lisa Gardner
    3. Cody Hoyt/ Cassie Dewell by CJ Box
    4. Joanna Brady by JA Jance
    5. Quincy Pierce/Rainey by Lisa Gardner
    6. Joe Pickett by CJ Box
    7. Anything that Sharon Sala writes. Her 3 book series are the best.

    • Long and Short Reviews says

Lisa Gardner is one of my fave authors! Also like JA Jance and Sharon Sala (though I imagine her as more romantic suspense than straight on mystery). I haven’t heard of the others, though, so I’ll check them out. Thanks for stopping by!

I just recently found CJ Box, I highly recommend his Cody Hoyt/ Cassie Dewell Series. Read in order but you won’t be disappointed I put him right up there with my fav author Lisa Gardner.
Here’s the 4 books you need to try & the order by CJ Box
        1. Back Of Beyond
        2. The Highway
        3. Badlands
        4. Paradise Valley
I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

I couldn’t agree more with your list so now I have to get to reading C.J. Box!

  4. The only one I haven’t read is the new JK ROwling but the rest of these series are fab!

  5. Stephanie Jenkins Ortiz Cerrillo says

    Oh, where do I begin?…
Secrets and Lies Series by Sharon Sala
J.P. Beaumont Series or Joanna Brady Series by J.A. Jance
Detective D.D. Warren or Quincy & Rainie series by Lisa Gardner

I’ve only been reading for about a year and a half since not reading for decades. I’m disabled now and I’m in search of authors to add to my go to authors list. A giveaway or a friends recommendation are the best two ways for me to find new favorite authors! Being a newbie I have no idea what link to linky list is.

  6. I keep meaning to read the Alphabet Mysteries series. I’v heard so many good things about it.

  7. I love the Cat Who series! Have you read the Her Royal Spyness books by Rhys Bowen? Historical British, very fun.

  8. I was so very sad when “The Cat Who” lady died. That was what my mother-in-law called her. She loved Lillian Braun even more than I did.

I’d say except for Robert Parker you have hit 4 or 5 of my very favorites. I’m not familiar with Keven Slaughter so I have another to put on my list.

  9. Ah, some new mysteries her for me, and some others I know. I’m trying to follow the Cormoran Strike series on TV while waiting for Lethal White to get release. I recentl read the only Karin Slaughter book I’ll ever go for bc it annoyed me so much and Charlaine Harris! Have you read her Harper Connelly series?? I love that!
