The first cold case he works on is the murder of Andrew Feeley.
In 2012, this twenty-one-year-old was found dead in the woods near his home, killed by a single stab wound to the chest from his own knife.
Andrew was extremely unpopular. He was a drug dealer, pimp and bully. His stepdad was one of the main suspects, as they hated each other and often came to blows. Other suspects include Toby Truman and his mother Debbie. Andrew was responsible for getting Toby hooked on drugs.
Given Andrew’s criminal background, his murder is thought to be drug-related.
But Hillary’s not buying it — she knows it’s personal. And a search of the Feeleys’ garden turns up some chilling evidence.

I was a little surprised at the decent time-jump between this and the previous Hillary book and needed to go double check I hadn’t missed a book in between. While a few big changes – and a decent gap of time – has passed, this story retains all the elements of the other Hillary murder mystery novels that I’ve come to really enjoy. There are two new members of her team – one of which I am deeply interested in and can’t wait to learn a fair bit more about. Plus, the tone and setting of the story and the author’s voice all tie together to make this a really enjoyable read.
Readers who enjoy a slightly slower pace to their mysteries, and a more police procedural style of tone should find this book really suits their needs. I enjoyed putting the pieces together and while I did connect a few of the dots it was a lovely thing to see it all gel together at the end with of course Hillary successfully solving the crime. For a well plotted, slow but moving pace to the mystery and some varied and realistic characters this is a wonderful book and a great series. I am eagerly looking forward to more. Recommended.
