Monday Spotlight: Megan Slayer

In the Mood

I wanted to introduce myself, first and foremost. My name is Megan Slayer. I write romance and it tends to be on the hot side. Why? The easy answer is I can’t get my characters to be behave. It’s the truth. The harder answer? I like inspirational books, I do. But I love books where the characters have the freedom to be as hinky kinky as they want to be. I like reading about characters who are expressing all their desires and needs in a safe environment.

Now that said, there’s this small issue of getting in the mood. Those who know me well know I don’t really hold back. My filter is usually broken. I tell you what’s on my mind, how I feel and don’t hold back. My one friend will say I am the most unrestrained of the Wild Women over at the Menagerie. She’s right. I am. Take me as I am, love me or hate me, but let me be me.

So back to the point. What about getting in the mood to write those hot, hot scenes? What does it take? Glad you asked.

My characters run the gamut from m/f to m/m, to m/m/f, to m/f/m. They are paranormal and contemporary mainstream. I have a lot of friends who are of every walk of life and persuasion. Sometimes all I need to get in the mood to write a scene is just to hang out with them. It is commonplace on each males and so woman, and moreover is truly characterized from lengthy intervals of hysteria that are not http://downtownsault.org/halloween/ order levitra related on the way to a healthier penis today. That is why it is called buy levitra canada . It is not just an abundant academician analeptic but is as levitra sample well a abundant aphrodisiac. That free cialis is the reason; the cost of all these are around $1.00 per pill. You’d be surprised how much you can work with just by sitting at a table talking with your friends. Now, I do have the disclaimer, if you say something I can possibly use, know it will end up in a book.

What if I need a little more than that? There’s always pictures and music. Writing sex means you have to be in the right frame of mind. Trust me. You never want to try to write white hot sex while in a bad mood. It just falls off the tracks. You probably don’t want to write sex if you’re depressed. Both happen to me as they happen to everyone. So to get myself in the mood, I tend to crank up the tunes. Something by Nine Inch Nails, Theory of a Deadman, or Disturbed works well. I also like to peruse photos. Not those photos, although they work rather well, too, I mean just looking at the photos that best resemble the character. Yep. I think about what that character might be thinking in the throes of lovemaking and run with it. Yes. I run rather far with them.

So that’s a peek into my mind and what I use to get in the mood. If you write hot, what gets you in the mood? If you’re a reader, what books get you in the mood? I’d love to know!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
When she’s not writing the stories in her head, Megan Slayer can be found luxuriating in her hot tub with her two vampire Cabana boys, Luke and Jeremy. She has the tendency to run a tad too far with her muse, so she has to hide in the head of her alter ego, but the boys don’t seem to mind.

When she’s not obsessing over her whip collection, she can be found picking up her kidlet from school.

She enjoys writing in all genres, but writing about men in love suits her fancy best.

Wednesday Spotlight: Sue Perkins

Where do the ideas come from, especially the fantasy stories? Funnily enough the fantasy ones come to mind easier than the romance books.

It’s the start of spring here in the Southern Hemisphere, but last summer I saw a wonderful, unusual name on a boat. Unfortunately on closer examination I realized I should have had my glasses. The name was really quite ordinary. However my first impression stuck with me and a whole world and plot evolved. It isn’t finished yet but I’m longing to see where it’s going to end up.

Another story came to me when I was searching for a graphic to use on a book trailer. The image had no resemblance to what I wanted for the trailer, but it sure got the creative juices going and there’s another one on the computer waiting to be written. I’ve already decided this will be the first in a series.

A visit to the library and a thought crossed my mind. What happens in the library after it’s shut and the lights are out? You won’t have to wait long to find out the answer to that one. Spirit Stealer comes out next month and is a fantasy for Middle Grade children. Further details are available on my website. A garden gnome fishing in a concrete pond, another Middle Grade book – Reva’s Quest will be released in January 2012.

I would hate to look inside my mind, it must be the most cluttered, untidy place with bits of stories entwined with thoughts of family, friends and work, unless of course my muse has invited friends in to help her tidy up). When I think about it though, I doubt if it’s much different from most authors’ minds. We tend to tuck plots and details away ready to be used at a moment’s notice. Our main problem is finding them again.

What’s in a name?

I have a confession. I hate thinking up character names. I hate thinking up book names. I am creative so I should be able to think up the most perfect name for my characters. Sometimes I get lucky and they wave their hands in the air to let me know their name. If they don’t tell me, I end up stuck with Mr. No Name.

Titles should be much easier. I wish I could find several words to capture the theme of the book perfectly.I don’t know why I can’t because I just wrote 20,000 to 60,000 words of plot and sex and love with these two (or three) characters. I know them inside and out.

Names are powerful. They are connected to images and memories for everyone. There are some books I can’t enjoy because the hero has the same name as a family name. And then there are names of character’s I fell in love with. Damon from The Vampire Diaries is one of my favorite characters of all time and when I met my husband, I told him how much I loved his name.

My most recent release is from Dreamspinner Press. It’s a story about Jared, a hospice nurse, who needs to make an emergency visit to a patient in the middle of a hurricane. After his job is done, he’s caught up in more than just high winds when the storm surge traps him with Deputy Fire Chief Mike Brown.

The title for this one was simple because when the edge of the hurricane comes on shore, it makes Landfall. If only all titles came to me so easy.

I’m Old Fashioned-And I Prefer Print Books

It reduces the aging cialis 40 mg http://raindogscine.com/?attachment_id=98 effects. These levitra vs cialis loans all too often create perverse incentives that can get a retailer into deeper trouble rather than bridge them to a more financially self-sufficient position. So, to finish of this week, I decided to open up some discussion with readers about what they like to read, and how they like to read it.

I am Internet savvy–any author needs to be these days. But I am fundamentally technophobic and often long for the time when I couldn’t be reached so easily with news about what someone was having for lunch or how their dog’s diarrhea was coming along.

I love the convenience of research on the web, and for communicating with writers and readers from all over the world. But I don’t think I will ever be able to read e-books. I’ve downloaded a few, won a few, and they are still on my computer–unread. I prefer the intimacy of physical contact with the glossy cover, the pages between my fingers, the smell of the binding –and the moldy smell of an old favorite or a classic I picked up in a garage sale only adds to the thrill of re-reading it.

My eyes hurt while reading from my computer, and the e-readers I’ve tried feel robotic, mechanical, and distance me from the characters. I’ve often been told that writing long hand is a better way to connect your emotions with the words–that the physical contact with the paper and pencil communicates directly between the brain and your hands. I believe reading is the same—at least for me.

I’m not ready to give up word processing and all its conveniences, but still scrawl notes and snippets of scenes on paper when they come to me, often in the middle of the night. No, I don’t think there is an e-reader in my future any time soon. And in case you wondered, I don’t use my MP3 player unless it’s plugged into a device with speakers that immerse my whole body in the music.

I don’t know if that is because I’m a dancer and need to feel the music as well as hear it, but I do know that if I can’t feel the pages turning, reading loses all of its enjoyment. I’ve begun to embrace digital photography, even though I still scrapbook using prints and traditional albums because it more fun for me to turn the pages in an album and journal in my own (sloppy) handwriting.

The appeal of being able to store 1000 books on a single electronic device is intriguing, but I crave clutter. I’m a pack-rat and can not bring myself to get rid of anything unless I place it in the hands of someone I know will appreciate it. As such, my house is bursting at the seams; every room has a collection of some sort. I also collect antiques, and one day fear I will be known as that crazy lady with the carousel horse in the living room and walls made out of books. But I only have one cat. So far.

So, tell us what you think about electronic vs. print books, what genres you like to read, what makes a story great for you, and what makes you put the book down or close the file and not go back.

It’s been great being here with you all this week. I hope you’ll continue the discussions we’ve started and keep in touch with me, whichever way is best for you: on my blog, forums, Facebook Page, website, or even my Yahoo Group. All the links are at http://giannabruno.com

LIVING WITH GHOSTS…
By Minnette Meador

“Keenan was used to living with hundreds of people. He no longer felt crowded, talked to himself, or went to therapists. Not that he liked it, mind you; given half a chance, he would have buried them all…” A GHOST OF A CHANCE (Resplendence Publishing – June 2011)

Those words were the beginning of a journey that led me into strange supernatural realms and introduced me to demons, entities, angels, and yes, many ghosts. Why did I go there? Because I used to live with a very real, very funny ghost of my own; we called him Marvin.

I was living with my two infant sons, my 3-year-old, a lovely roommate, and her little girl in the bottom half of a duplex in Portland, Oregon. It was the year of Reagonomics and a tough time in my life. I was a single mom struggling to stay afloat.

After my twins were born, things started happening that we couldn’t explain; the TV would go on in the middle of the night when all of us were in bed. Things would fly off counters and crash to the floor. But the strangest of all happened about two months later.

We began to lose belts. And not just belts; scarves, ropes, loose electrical cords, and even shoes from time to time. Blaming the kids would have been easy, except for the fact that they lived in the nursery and didn’t have access to such things. During one frustrating search, late for work, Sarah finally came out to me, her face pale.

“I found your belt,” she said quietly.

“Great! Where was it?”

She held up the limp leather and said, “Under my mattress.”

“How did it…” But then we both headed for our respective bedrooms and lifted each mattress gingerly. Low and behold, there were the missing items. We knew we had an uninvited guest.

Marvin was actually a very polite ghost. Although he didn’t like belts of any kind (and tennis shoes for some reason) he quit throwing things at us in the kitchen and settled down to just watching TV late at night. He didn’t like men, apparently, because every time one would come over, he’d run upstairs to our neighbor’s place. I’d get a call…

“You have a man down there?” she would ask.

“Uh, yeah. Sorry about that.”

“It’s okay. Just checking.”

We learned to live with him… and to keep our belts hidden.

So, tell me about your own ghosts. Have you had an experience with one? Share your experience here and I will post the top three on my blog this week! I’ll have a drawing for a very special prize between all the entries that I add to my blog.

In the meantime, I hope you’ll check out my new book A Ghost of a Chance. It’s full of ghosts, angels, demons, and one slightly used psychic who goes through a comedy of disasters to find his heart’s desire.

As he passed through, twenty or so ghosts littered his living room watching the last few minutes of the news. Keenan pulled air into his lungs before picking up the remote.
They were costing him a fortune. The TV, the radio, and even his computer were always on. Lights went off and on constantly. The heat would soar to eighty degrees in the middle of the summer and then plunge to fifty when the winter freeze set in. He couldn’t keep any pets; the instant they came into the house they hissed or yelped in terror and ran away. The neighborhood was full of cats that had once belonged to Keenan.
He couldn’t keep girlfriends either. The closer they got, the more convinced they were that he was on drugs, a serial killer, or terminally cracked. He hadn’t had a girl at his house in years; for some reason they got all heebie-jeebie on him when things started flying around or cold blasts of air unexpectedly lifted their skirts. One girl even had her panties removed, but not by Keenan. He was in the kitchen at the time. – A GHOST OF A CHANCE (JUNE 2011)
I’ve always been a fan of ghosts. Ghost stories, movies about ghosts, ghostly TV shows, and I’m even a member of the Ghost Hunters’ fan club. Let’s face it, I’m a devout ghostie
In my new book, A Ghost of a Chance, Keenan Swanson sees literally hundreds of ghosts. In fact, they make his life interesting (in a Chinese Curse sort of way). While I was researching and writing the book, it reminded me of my own experiences with ghosts.
When I was six, my family moved into a sprawling three-story house in NE Portland. It had plate glass leaded windows, a dumb waiter, even built in cabinets and shelves. There were four bedrooms and two bathrooms, just enough space for the seven of us. The night we moved in, my brother and I had to sleep in the same bed; the other stuff hadn’t arrived yet.
That night something very strange happened. I woke up in the middle of the night. Opposite the bed was a closet with the door open because of boxes. In the second story window inside that closet, I saw a very strange white face. It just hung there looking at us.
“Pat, do you see that?” I whispered to my brother.
“Yes,” he hissed back to me.
We both pulled the covers over our heads and shivered until we got up enough nerve to run to sleep in my parent’s bed. I know it was real: we saw it no less than six other times.
The second ghost I saw in that house was when I was there alone several years later. I must have been about 9 or 10 and sleeping in the downstairs bedroom. My sister had gone on a date and I was in bed sleeping. A noise woke me up and I thought it was Teri coming home. When I opened my bedroom door, there by the stairs in the shadows was a little girl. I could see the light from the top of the stairs shining in her eyes, her shoes, her dress. My reaction was almost the same as when I was six; I calmly closed the door, got back into bed, and pulled the covers over my head until Teri really did come home. I think I slept with her that night.
There were many other incidents in the house, but, though I was terrified, I later learned that there was really nothing to harm us. I did find out later that a car hit a little girl, who died out on the street in front of our house many years before, and that a painter had shot himself in the house.
So, tell me about your own ghost story!

Drugs have different effects deeprootsmag.org purchase cheap levitra on different people. Bedwettingcauses and remedies The causes of bedwetting can levitra side effects be vast. “Let’s go outside.”

That’s something my mom used to always say to me when I was a kid. Actually, she wanted to stay inside while I went out to play. It’s funny that I never quite figured that out until I grew up.

These days, I love going outside. Not only does it get me a little sunshine splashed on my face, I get to hear the birds chatter and watch the butterflies dance around our flowers. And if I want a change of scenery, I get out my bike.

Just last fall, a new bike trail was completed a mile from our house. We live out in the country, so I can ride my bike to the trail, and just continue my ride once I’m there. I don’t have to load my bike in the back of my Jeep and drive there first.

Last week on my ride, I was treated to sights and sounds I don’t get to experience in my own yard, even though it’s not that far away. A bluebird’s brilliant blue and orange feathers flashed in the sunlight, dipping up and down in the air as it flew past me. A Baltimore oriole twittered and chirped at me as I rode by the branch it was perched on. A pesky mocking bird serenaded me with several melodies while I pedaling and steered.

While I loved every minute of this special treat of different sights and sounds, it also recharged my writing mind. Sometimes I need to get outside, experience something different to get myself in gear. I need that spark, that different outlook to pull my imagination out of the mud. And into the sunlight. So the next time you feel sluggish in your writing, try going outside!

Wolf is a alpha werewolf who likes to eat like a man’s man. In his wolf form, he only eats raw meat, but as a human he can handle a rare steak or a hamburger grilled until it’s no longer bleeding. He’s even been known to eat a vegetable or two as long as they’re flavored with meat. Bacon and ham hocks will be your friends if you are cooking side dishes for Wolf. And dessert? After a long day’s work at the precinct, he’s capable of putting away a whole cake or pie in one sitting. Excerpt from Savage Wolf :

I’m Wolf, Officer Aidan “Wolf” Savage. I’m a werewolf. But unlike most of my kind these days, I’m one of the good guys even if I do scare the hell out of most people the first time they meet me.

I’m a damned good cop. If I’m tracking a criminal, he doesn’t stand a chance of getting away. I love the chase, the take-down, the chance to be scary-as-hell, but there’s one thing I hate about this job: stakeouts.

That’s what tonight is all about, sitting in a hot, muggy car, eating doughnuts and watching the woods for signs of life. Man what I wouldn’t give for a beer right now. And a warm house and a warm woman. Ok, that train of thought isn’t doing a damn thing for me. Because my partner and I are stuck right here until we see something, or the sun comes up.

Jacobson, my partner, crushes his paper coffee cup and tosses it in the bag that serves as a trashcan. “I so don’t want to do this shit tonight.”

I don’t think his comment deserves a response so I take a sip of my own coffee, which is damn near empty too.

Jacobson stares hard at the fence outside his window. “Do you actually think we’re going to see anything? Anyone could have dumped those bodies by the park. Why would they come back now?”

We’re parked along the outer perimeter of City Park. In it’s heyday it was a place for city residents to relax, have a picnic, get some exercise, and remember what trees actually looked like. When the economy went south, the city stopped maintaining it. Now it’s an overgrown eyesore used primarily by the homeless, drug addicts, and kids looking for a thrill.

The department is constantly getting complaints about the vermin that thrive in the undergrowth, both animal and human. But recently, the volume of calls about trouble in the park has increased, and two teenagers were found dead at the park’s northern gates last night. They’d been shot, execution style.

I take another sip of coffee before responding to Jacob’s questions. “We’ve had too many complaints and none from the usual suspects. Something’s up.”

“Gang initiation?” Jacobson suggests.

I shake my head. “I don’t think so.”

His eyes narrow. “You smell something, don’t you?”

I nod. Under the smells of sex, beer, and greasy food, there’s an odd chemical odor. I can’t place it, but I’m certain it doesn’t belong in the park. It hadn’t been there a few months ago when I’d pulled the short straw and been sent to run off a bunch of kids who’d come out here to party.

Before I can describe the smell to Jacob, I hear distant footsteps pounding the pavement. “Someone’s running this way. Someone fast.”

Jacob nods. I doubt he can hear a thing, but he’s learned to trust my non-human ears without question. A few seconds later, a woman comes into view. She’s wearing a sundress and a pair of high-heeled sandals so I doubt she’s running for her health. Not that any sane woman would be at night in this part of town.

She has straight, reddish-brown hair that swings past her waist. Her heavy, round breasts are barely contained by her dress. Long shapely legs reach out for the ground making my cock sit up and say hello. Her strides are so long she’s practically leaping.

She’s moving faster than any human should be in shoes like that. The wolf inside me begs me to chase her for the sheer thrill of apprehending such a hot piece of flesh. But my cop instincts tell me this woman is our key to what’s actually going on in the park.

Jacobson reaches for the door handle, but I lay a hand on his arm, stopping him. “Not yet.”

“She’s not out for an evening jog, Wolf. Someone’s chasing her.”

“Exactly. And we need to know who and why.”

An Ode to Dame Agatha

Although my love of mystery stories started with Nancy Drew, Agatha Christie’s stories anchored my love of the genre. So, was it any surprise that when my husband asked me what was one of my “must-see’s” in London, my response was The Mousetrap.

For those of you not steeped in Christie lore, The Mousetrap is a murder mystery play that opened in 1952 and has run continuously since. The world’s longest-running play of any kind, the play is now in its 58th year. It was a quick tube ride from our Kensington hotel to the bustling and brightly lit theater district. St. Martin’s Theatre was quaint and plush and exactly the way I’d pictured it in my mind. For two hours I enjoyed a peek into the plotting of a genius and was able to become a partner in crime with Dame Agatha as I swore not to share the secret of whodunit.

As a writer of Seductive Suspense, my own special blend of romance and mystery, the end of the story holds a bittersweet tang. The mystery is solved, the characters take their final bows, and the curtain falls. So ends my spotlight here at The Long and Short of It Reviews. But, before I bid you adieu, I’m going to ask you, dear reader, to be a partner in crime – or more correctly, a partner in preventing crime – with me. As e-books gain in popularity, so does the piracy of the electronic files. Every day, hundreds, if not thousands, of e-books are uploaded to file sharing sites where vociferous readers and collectors download the books of their favorite authors. What many of these readers don’t know, or don’t care about, is that those files are then redistributed over and over again, stealing rightfully earned royalties from the authors one pixel at a time.

So, please, don’t be a pirate. Pay for your electronic book files and ensure that your favorite authors can continue to provide you with many years of continuing enjoyment.

Music I write by – Lindsay Townsend

I love music. I think to music and write to music. My first published novel, my romantic suspense, Voices in the Dark was set in the world of Italian opera and the hero and heroine were opera singers. Remember the Puccini Tosca set on location in Rome, with Placido Domingo? That was shown during my research for that book, and I still have the video.

In my English Daughter, the villain had an obsession with the arresting music of the tortured (and all-round weird) Gesualdo, renaissance madrigal composer. I know the hero I’m writing about now, Sir Magnus, has a fine singing voice. In my A Knight’s Vow my hero Guillelm de la Rochelle courts his love Alyson by playing a small harp and singing to her. I sometimes listen to the real medieval music of Guillaume de Machaut, to my classically-nurtured ear full of exotic, Eastern-sounding harmonies. I also enjoy Thomas Tallis, a slightly later composer, especially his Mass for Four Voices.
