It’s 24 meets the Medium in this fast-paced, high stakes thrill ride!

It’s a volatile mix when seasoned, no-nonsense FBI Special Agent Nathan West is forced to work with Aubrey Scott, a quirky, freethinking spirit medium who’s in way over her head. Despite their polar opposite views, clashing wills, and reluctant but fiery attraction, Nate and Aubrey must pool their skills to stop a bio-terrorism threat of cataclysmic proportions. Putting aside his extreme skepticism, Nate must support Aubrey and the use of her unconventional paranormal skills to find the answers they need through unpredictable ghostly means. Facing the worst bio-terrorism threat in U.S. history with a mere 72 hours until bombs explode releasing a deadly virus into the water systems of seven major cities, millions of lives hang in the balance. Only the man who planted the delivery devices knows their locations and the deactivation codes and that man has just been murdered!

Discovering their love just might be the answer to saving the world.

Special Agent Nate West must question a man who is intent on killing millions of people using biological warfare. There’s just one problem - the man is dead! Nate deals in facts and logic, but when normal methods fail to uncover any leads, his bosses bring in a psychic. Reluctantly he agrees to give the psychic a try, but is horrified when he’s faced with an attractive female redhead who only has basic FBI training.

Aubrey Scott, recently recruited by the FBI, has never handled such a large psychic job before. So much depends on her contacting the dead man and making him reveal his plan. From their first meeting she realizes Nate doesn’t believe in life after death or the ability to contact the spirits, and his doubts cause friction between them making her job harder.

To find the corpse and spirit of the terrorist, Nate and Aubrey must first discover who killed him. Initially suspicious of Aubrey’s abilities, successful use of her psychic powers force Nate and his team to believe she can help. The search progresses, leaving several bodies in their wake, and Aubrey’s skills help her question the spirits before they pass over. Aubrey is drained by the excessive use of her powers and Nate remains close to her at all times. The initial spark of interest in each other develops into a deep attraction, but can Nate accept Aubrey’s interaction with her spirit guides?

I enjoyed the combination of different genres in this book. Romance, mystery and paranormal are expertly blended by Ms Cavener. Belief in psychic ability is not a prerequisite to read this book; the story gripped me from the beginning, and I found it difficult to anticipate how the tale would develop. This increased my enjoyment of Operation: After-Life as I don’t like to know what’s going to happen too soon.

At one point I thought I’d reached the end of the book, and I was disappointed as several hints through the story hadn’t been resolved. I was delighted to find I was wrong. There was still more to come and I found myself eagerly turning the pages to the end.

I would recommend Operation: After-Life as a book to read when you have plenty of time to relax. It’s a novel that holds your attention from beginning to end. If this is an example of Ms Cavener’s books I’d be happy to read others in future.
