She won’t let an innocent man hang

When Charity Dawson resigns her father’s corporate law firm to pursue a career as a trial lawyer, she gets more of a change than she wanted. She finds herself transported to 1888 Texas in the middle of a murder trial.

Turner Reardon is on trial for killing his mistress. He’s given up all hope when an oddly dressed young woman disrupts his trial, claiming she can prove his innocence. Her testimony is brilliant, but his optimism is short lived when she also claims she’s a lawyer.

Charity doesn’t know how she arrived in Prairie, and no one believes she actually went to law school. Her evidence is tossed out and Turner is sentenced to hang. She has only one chance to save an innocent man’s life and find the real killer.

I found “A Law Of Her Own” to be good for a short story. I loved the premise of a female lawyer traveling back in time just in the nick of time to save an innocent man from hanging.

Charity Dawson is a strong willed, capable lawyer who isn't afraid to stand up for what she thinks is right. I liked how she moved her way forward in the courtroom to get next to Jonas Bailey to offer advice. Then when she stuck with him and refused to give up on Turner's case she showed her determination. I felt that her character was fully fleshed out. I could see her in my mind and feel her thoughts and emotions. Unfortunately, the rest of the characters in the story were very sketchy.

Turner Reardon seemed to be a nice, good looking man. He was imprisoned for murder and was adamant that he was innocent. I know that he seemed to care for Charity and helped her build a house on her land. I just wish I knew as much about him as I did Charity. It was difficult to believe his feelings for Charity when they are expressed since Turner's character is not as developed in the story.

I liked reading “A Law of Her Own.” I just wish it had been longer so more of the characters, both major and minor, could have been further fleshed out. I would like to read more of the town of Prairie, Texas, the residents, and their lives.
