Struggling to save her pack in a fight to the death, Leiah has no clue what she’s in for when the Shadow Wolf, Rikker, intervenes. In one swoop, he claims her and threatens to take her away from the only family she’s ever known. Leiah rejects his claim, even though she craves him as much as he craves her. Can these two Shadow Wolves find a balance before Leiah’s beloved pack is torn apart?

Leiah is fighting to save her pack, as alpha it’s her duty to make sure her pack survives the Yeti attack. The males of her pack are weak and look to her to lead them; some of them stay and help her fight but many others run and hide. Rikker, a lone wolf, happens upon the fighting and being the alpha male that he is, jumps right in and protects her. He has no patience for the males he deems as ‘weaklings’ and only fights because he realizes that Leiah is his mate.

Rikker tells Leiah that she is his mate and even though she has a stronge attraction to him she feels that she cannot leave the pack. They depend on her because she was the one who got them out of the ‘ghettos’ of Syrila where they would have been worked until they were of no more use to the rulers. Rikker does not feel any connection to these weaklings and wants to take her away with him. Of course the other wolves are upset and they will do anything to get rid of Rikker so that they can keep Leiah with them.

Since this was a short story I got to know a little about the characters of Leiah and Rikker but there was still something missing. I really couldn’t get invested in the characters because there simply was time to fit a huge background story with everything else that was going on. I did like that Leiah was an alpha female and didn’t back down from a fight, and of course you had the alpha male who complimented her nicely.

The story was a enjoyable read and the sex between the characters was raw and hot. While it would have been nice to have a little background story about how Leiah came to rescue the wolves and why Rikker was a lone wolf this quick glimpse into their meeting was exciting. Overall as I said, the story was a good read, and Marteeka Karland is a good story teller.
