Mick is a lonely, shy, relatively small-statured guy who finds himself in the wrong place, wrong time when he tails good-looking Ivan into a coffee shop. What follows is mistaken identity, followed by Ivan first threatening and later falling for, saving, and eventually turning Mick into a vampire to preserve his life and guarantee a soul connection with Ivan. This story was a nice twist on the typical vampire genre. The author throws in some good new elements, including a serum that allows these vampires to go out in the sunlight and the ability to heal and vanish all puncture wounds after feeding. Ivan’s cousin, Kiven, is a strong minor character here who helps Ivan out of more than one dangerous situation. Mick and Ivan, as well, are a good pairing and seem drawn to each other from the first moment of their meeting, despite their complete opposition in manner and appearance. The sex scenes are explicit and well written, leaving no question as to the lustful attraction between them. However, I did feel that there wasn’t enough character motivation for Ivan to immediately want to mate with Mick, other than the fact that they were “destined” to be together. I also questioned some of the external conflict that occured later in the story. Ivan must face down an old foe, a dangerous gang of humans/non-vampires, but it’s not entirely clear why the gang has any power over the vampires, since the vampires have strength and mental abilities that far outweigh the thugs.
Beyond these few plot and character issues, I found When Blood Beckons to be a satisfying story, especially if you’re a lover of all things paranormal. Read and enjoy!
