Nineteen-year-old Dylan Shaw is possibly the most beautiful thing Malic Sunden has ever seen. After Malic rescues Dylan from an attack, Dylan makes it very clear that he is more than interested, but Malic won’t even consider sleeping with Dylan because of his age. Malic is sure he’s not good enough for Dylan, who has his whole life ahead of him, and can’t conceive of burdening Dylan with his secrets.

But the darkness in Malic’s life won’t be denied, and soon Dylan is drawn into the dangerous paranormal world that is Malic’s reality. Malic fights tooth and nail to push Dylan away, to keep him safe… no matter that Dylan is the key to Malic’s strength and the only hope for his future.

His touch can kill and yet, some cannot get enough.

I know when I open a Mary Calmes book, I am in for a good time. It might not be all smiles and laughs, but I will come away thinking about the characters. Tooth and Nail is that and more.

This is a complex story. Now, I didn’t read the prequel and I personally thought I wasn’t at a disadvantage. I knew what was going on and had to keep reading to see what would happen to Malic and Dylan. I felt immersed in their world and on the edge of my seat watching Malic do his job. I don’t want to give away a spoiler, but there were moments I turned pages quickly to see what would happen next.

The characters in this story aren’t happy, sappy sweet and that is a boon. I love characters that are a little dark and brooding. Sure, I had to really get into their world, but it wasn’t hard. Malic is the epitome of brooding. He’s not about to give in too much to his desire for Dylan. He could kill him with his touch. And yet, he can’t quite stay away. It might not be traditional or syrupy romance, but it worked and I loved it.

My favorite character was Dylan. The guy has a bit of sappy puppy dog love to him, but he’s young. I expected him to be more smitten and lusty than Malic. Some might be put off by his single-mindedness, but I liked it. He knew what he wanted and didn’t give up. By the end of the story, I felt like I both knew and could picture Malic and Dylan. I liked what I saw and read.

If you want a story with plenty of twists, turns, and surprises, then you need to read Tooth and Nail. I give it 4.5 cherries.
