Review by: AmaranthRandall Wise is the quintessential good guy. However, all of his friends are married and he’s still single. Rand is positive that good guys finish last at love and decides he needs to change if he’s ever going to find a woman of his own.
Brenna Thorne is a clutzy but cute would-be witch who moves in next door to Rand. Men always think of Brenna like a sister. They never see her as girlfriend or mate material. Brenna longs for a man of her own who sees her sexy side and all the love she has to give.
A little magic from Rand’s godparents, a familiar who isn’t a familiar, and a host of well-meaning but surprising friends help Rand and Brenna see that all you need to find your mate is a heart that is open to love.
Randall has always known that good guys finished last and now he has proof. Rand’s five best friends, none as nice as he, have all found their one true love and settled down in marital bliss, while he, the nice guy, is still single and lonely. Although it is his destiny as a Sabbath’s child to be a good guy, he decides to be a jerk, because he just has to find his mate. He knows that his mate is tied into his destiny, but he has no idea just how much. Brenna seems to be in the same boat as Randall. She is a cute and very good girl. She is also horny and desperate to find someone, but her best friends, Tyler and James, keep stopping her from acting unlike herself just to find someone to sleep with.
The Wise Guy has an intriguing plot, one that I would like to know much more about. I felt that this story may have been rushed just a bit and if it had been extended a little more, just to go into deeper detail, it would have been better. Lex Valentine did a good job with her characters and describing their surroundings quite well, it was the plot that seemed to suffer a little. Rand and Bren are both likeable characters, just your simple nice people, except with magic. When they meet, the attraction and passion that they both feel is explosive and really brings out their naughty side. At times, the dialogue seemed to become a bit unrealistic, but it flowed together nicely.
I would imagine that this book would be great as a series, so that the author would have an opportunity to expand on her plot and the mysteries of witches and mages. Her secondary characters alone would do well as leading characters in other books, because each character in this book was interesting and has a story to tell.

Thanks for the review! I’m glad you liked Rand and Brenna. Some day I’ll make the time to explore the Magia in a series. 🙂
