Hot on the heels of a nasty break-up, Natalie’s truck dies and strands her deep in Louisiana’s sweltering backwoods. A glow beyond the trees and a haunting melody lead her to what she hopes is salvation.

The Shivaree is more than a bar. It’s a mysterious oasis where people go to escape into a cold drink and lose themselves against a warm body on the dance floor. Gabriel is its resident musician, gifted with unnerving talent and intoxicating sexual charisma. The only thing standing between Natalie and the perfect rebound is Gabriel’s possessive and domineering lover, and Natalie’s not afraid of a bully. Certainly not one built like Shane Broussard. She’s ready to discover the perfect remedy for heartache—two hot male bodies, one long, sultry, southern night.

Wouldn’t you know it? A woman is lost in the back roads at night with a broken down truck and a light in the woods lures her into blissful erotic sex with two gorgeous men. Why don’t these things happen to me?

Natalie is angry and frustrated after a break-up with a boyfriend and drives her truck until it dies in the Louisiana backwoods. When the only place she can go is a bar called Shivaree, she finds Gabriel, the most gorgeous man she’s ever seen and is attracted instantly. The only problem is that his angry lover, Shane wants her to leave without looking back.

While captivating his audience as he plays and sings his songs on stage, Gabriel notices Natalie and wants her too, even though he knows that Shane will punish him for it. Not one to shy away, he talks Shane into agreeing to let him have her and sets out to accept his due without a qualm. He’s under Gabriel’s spell and warns Natalie she won’t be able to stop craving the man when she leaves. And he’s determined that she will leave even though he’s drawn to her also.

This is a tale that you won’t be able to put down. A touch of melancholy rides over the surface of the story. You’ll feel it in the author’s words as the characters deal with their own emotional issues. Gabriel is the only one who seems to have no worries, as though he’s a mystical being with the power to make others desire him. Each character is interesting and unique, holding your attention throughout though I’d really like to meet Shane! *G*

This story deserves 4.5 Cherries. Well done, Cara McKenna.

  1. Thanks so much for the thoughtful review of my book, Ambrosia!

When I began this story, Shane was the character I had the least fleshed out, but he ended up being my favorite, too. If you want more of his surly, swear-ridden charm, Backwoods, the standalone m/m prequel to Shivaree, will be coming out late summer / early fall from Ellora’s Cave. And, all things going as planned, Shane will return in a Shivaree sequel in the not-too-distant future and finally get the happy ending he deserves…poor bastard.

    All the best,
    Cara McKenna
