Review by LilacChyna Marsh surrounds herself with men. Perfect men. Dark, blond, tall, muscled or dimpled, she loves them all. Being a romance writer, she creates perfect men for a living. But when her dashing paper hero steps from between the scorching pages of her latest novel, she thinks the rush of the big city is getting to her and relocates to a slow-moving coastal town.
It’s here that she meets two men. Quinn Grayson is dark and devilishly handsome, but his brother Kirk has a severely scarred face and hides deep in the mansion’s cellar. Even though she has been warned to stay away from him, Chyna is helplessly drawn into the midnight shadows where he lurks.
What is there about this elusive phantom that fascinates her–this sinister silhouette whose glowing eyes burn with hunger when they look at her–this hulking creature she has come to know as–Frankenstein!
In a tale full of jealousy, obsession, and love, the author proves the old adage that beauty is in the eye of the beholder to be true.
In this gothic romance, romance author Chyna moves to a small coastal town and begins having some haunting dreams about a fantasy lover who seems to be a real person. I have to admit that at first I was just as confused as Chyna, but I was intrigued by all that was revealed as things soon become clear. Chyna is intrigued by the Grayson brothers and I couldn’t really blame her. Almost complete opposites, these brothers are both scene-stealers. There’s handsome Quinn who is dark and seems to be keeping something from Chyna and those around him. Then there is the horribly scarred Kirk, a gentle soul who lurks in the shadows as he deals with his emotional and physical scars from an accident that killed his parents. Chyna is drawn to Kirk and longs to make him see his own self-worth and I really enjoyed the relationship that develops. But they definitely have quite a few ups-and-downs and complications that they must deal with.
Throw in a bit of magic, jealousy, and a castle by the sea and you have an interesting gothic romance complete with its own monster, if you want to call Kirk that.
While this gothic romance gets off to an interesting start, it starts to fizzle out toward the end as the story takes some unexpected turns and more events are added. At times it felt a bit too plot heavy as things get dragged out and the author adds in little things that while interesting almost seem a bit much. There is so much happening in the book, some of it a bit unbelievable, that I felt that at times some of the events weighed the story down.
But despite this, I still enjoyed the story and the romance that blossoms between the two unlikely characters. The story kind of reminded me of “Beauty and the Beast” or “The Phantom of the Opera” and I enjoyed that. Just like Kirk, Shadow Lover is definitely intriguing despite its flaws
