Matt is alone for Christmas, wondering if the magic of his favorite holiday is gone forever in a life of bills and disappointments and loneliness and work. Then a couple of puppies appear outside his door, sitting in a milk crate. Matt enlists the help of Josh from across the hall to hide them from their grumpy landlord, the evil Mr. Scrapple. But Christmas is a time of miracles, and nothing is quite what it seems.

Food, puppies, a bookworm, and a cranky old man. Sounds like an interesting holiday story, doesn’t it?

It is.

I love stories about people finding each other despite the odds. Add in a couple of flopsy, mopsy puppies and you’ve really got something. Matt works at a Co-Op and creates new recipes. He’s not totally content to be alone in his sad-excuse for an apartment, but man, has he got an obsession with ricotta cheese. Then there’s Josh, the bookworm extraordinaire. Sarah Black writes a cute story filled with characters I wanted to see succeed. Even when I wasn’t totally sure whether to like or dislike a couple of them, I still found myself rooting for them. Reading the evolution between the characters and the overall theme of the story was lovely. Matt and Josh have a mutual attraction, but they keep it under wraps. I love how things blossomed in—of all things—a snowfall.

The plot twists in this short little tale are many. The ending was something I never saw coming, but I can’t see it happening any other way. It left a smile on my face.
