Wandering cowboy Luke Walker is at the end of his rope after his girlfriend abandons their newborn daughter. A terrified new father, he’s grateful to meet Dr. Morgan Gallagher. Morgan recognizes that he and Luke could help each other: Luke can rebuild Morgan’s property and land so Morgan can have the horses he wants, and Morgan can provide the younger man with a safe place to raise his daughter. In theory, it should work out perfectly, except that Morgan is instantly attracted to Luke—a straight man—and sharing the same cabin and caring for the baby is a more intimate arrangement than he’d imagined.

I want you to want me, but I’m scared to drive you away.

Morgan’s smitten with Luke from the moment he sees him, but darn it if he’ll offer his heart only to have it stomped on. But then there’s the baby…

This is my first Jan Irving story, but I guarantee it won’t be the last. The characters drew me in immediately and I didn’t want the tale to end. The writing flowed so well, I felt I was right there at the ranch with them, learning to deal with an infant and falling in love. The tension was thick and as palpable as the desire flowing between Luke and Morgan. The plot moves well, rife with emotion and plot twists. I couldn’t put it down.

Luke may come across as impulsive, but he’s got a heart of gold. I loved him the moment he stepped onto the page. He’s not at all sure of Morgan because he’s not at all sure of his own sexuality. He’s a one night only type of guy and though he appreciates the male form—to sleep with one? It’s his confusion and blossoming reality that really endeared me to him. Plus, he’s a single dad. Honestly, the fact that he took in the two month old and is trying his best to take care of her really got to me.

Morgan is a piece of work. He’s so attracted to Luke, it’s not funny. It’s actually pretty sexy. But he’s a tad fearful, and who wouldn’t be? No one wants to be rejected, especially by the object of your affection. Morgan is relatable because he’s not perfect. I loved how he softened once he held baby Jessica and how she wrapped him around her little finger, right next to her daddy.

If you want a story that’s got heat and heart, then this is the book for you. Luke hits all the right notes and will leave you with a smile. I give it 4.5 cherries.
