I remember various gifts I received as a child at Christmas time. Dolls were always a favorite gift, especially the year I got a Shirley Temple doll. My older sister, Carolyn, even made clothes for it….and not just a few. She had a small, red suitcase filled with pajamas, coats, and darling dresses. She bought a pattern and sewed all of them herself. What a special gift! Although I loved receiving dolls for Christmas, I also remember all the wonderful books that made an impression on me as a child.
Lady and the Tramp, Peter Pan, Bobbsey Twins, and all kinds of wonderful thick books of fairy tales brought me early joy. A few years later, Nancy Drew books were under the tree for me, which got me started on the road to loving mysteries. I love that my chick-lit mystery, A Fiery Secret, is many times featured on the same book page with a Nancy Drew mystery.I can’t leave out the various medical romances I loved getting later.
This Christmas I have two new releases, A Christmas Gift by Whimsical Publications and A Christmas CollectionAnthology: Sensual by Victory Tales Press. I’m going to purchase print copies of my releases to put in my adult children’s stockings. Yes, I still do stockings. We don’t have grandchildren yet so it’s hard to discontinue this tradition.
What about you? Do you give books for Christmas gifts? If so, do you buy fiction or nonfiction for your gift giving? I know my sister-in-law enjoys giving us self-help books. As much as I appreciate this, sometimes I wish she’d throw in a few romances in her selections. LOL

  1. This is why you give children books as gifts. They create long-lasting memories & a love for the written word.

  2. I agree with Marybelle. Books are a lasting gift, the kinds we always remember. 🙂

Congrats on all your wonderful books, Diane. I’m reading the latest from you right now! 🙂

  3. Great post Diane, and congrats on your releases! I love receiving books (or book store gift cards) as well as giving them. There’s nothing more satisfying than seeing a child page through a book with a look of delight. 🙂

  4. Hi Diane,
I think books make great Christmas gifts, and we still do stockings too. Our daughter does ours now, so that’s a treat for us. Congratulations on all of your writing success.

  5. I’m with you. Books make great gifts. I gave quite a few this year. Most were for my nieces. One of my fav gifts as a pre-teen was a boxed set of four Nancy Drew books. I tore through them in just a few days. Congrats on all your accomplishments.

  6. I’ll never forget getting my first Black Stallion book by Walter Farley under the tree. I think books are great gifts and we need to do all we can to spark the love of reading, especially in our young people. Maybe with all the neat new ereaders and apps for cell phones, they will turn back to reading from all these crazy video games. LOL

  7. Hi everyone!
I hope our youth turn back to reading. It’s the greatest escape and so enjoyable!

Thanks for the wonderful comments. Miss Mae, hope you like my latest release. 🙂

  8. Hi Diane,
Hope you had a great Christmas. I love receiving books as gifts or gift cards for ebooks :-). Have an awesome New Year, my friend!

  9. Hi Diane, grea post! I like giving books for presents. I feel confident about my husband’s reading choices, but he’s hooked on audible.com so I have to be very selective when giving him a print copy. My friends in NH are easy to give books to, because they are very open to all kinds of genres. Not only that, it’s easy to buy a book on Amazon and have it mailed to them.

And I LOVE getting books as gifts – all times of the year. hehe

    Smiles
    Steph

  10. One of my favourite presents at Christmas is books or book tokens to buy the ones I want. I see you like the Bobbsey Twins. I downloaded all their books from http://manybooks.net – I believe it’s part of the Guttenberg project. All the books are classicals which are out of copyright and I found a lot of my old favourites there. Love the cover on the collections book.

  11. Hi Diane, great post and I love your memories, they are so evocative. Good to hear you love the B Twins, too Best wishes for continued success. Hugs!

  12. Anne: I have to admit that I was disappointed that I didn’t get any gift cards for books. I asked for a gift card to use for Kindle books.

Steph:That’s great about your friends enjoying different genres. I seldom get my husband books – he doesn’t like to read so impressed that he has read several of mine.

Sue: That’s nice to know about the out of print Bobbsey Twins books. Thanks about the cover – Laura did a great job on it and the other Christmas anthology covers.

Gina: Thank you! I forgot to mention how I always read to our children when they were young. I carried on my mother’s tradition of reading.

  13. I have many books from my children’s stockings from Christmas past and a few of mine.Books are our favorite gifts in our family.Have a wonderful Holiday!!!

  14. Wow, that’s really neat the way you met your husband. Do you still have ties to that orphanage?

    Merry Christmas!

P.S. Did you get any books this year under your tree? 🙂

  15. I love your Christmas memories. I always got books and dolls too.
    Sue B

  16. Hi JoAnn,
I didn’t get any books. My kids and hubby got me a Kindle over a year ago for my b-day so had Amazon gift c. on my list. But didn’t get it either – did get nice gifts, though.

Actually the orphanage is no longer there. The buildings and campus have changed hands and it is no longer a home for orphans.

  17. Hi Sue,
That’s great you got books and dolls, too, for Christmas. Thanks for stopping by.

  18. HAPPY NEW YEAR,EVERYONE! I can’t believe it will be 2011 soon!

  19. dlynnpen,
Sorry I missed you earlier. Nice to hear that you enjoy giving and receiving books for Christmas! Have a great Tuesday!

  20. You are so right Diane. Books make the greatest of gifts. I can’t see any house being a home without the presence of books everywhere. I just wish more young people read these days, rather than spend so much time playing computer games. So many of the books you read as a youth, I loved too. Thanks for sharing your life here.

  21. Hi Diane, Sorry I’m late posting this. It’s the Christmas confusion, you know. I loved getting books as I was growing up. And your memories reminded me of making a complete warbrobe of doll clothes for my daughter to put under the tree from “Mrs. Claus.” It was a lot of work not to get credit for! I wish you and your family happy holidays and a wonderful new year. Linda

  22. Shirley: I’m so glad you stopped by! When I was little and went to the grocery store with my parents, I always was allowed to pick up a little golden book. It was such a treat to take home a book and have my mother read it to me. I wish, too, more young adults would read instead of playing computer games!

Linda: I know exactly what you mean. It was hard to do something special for our kids and then have to say it was from Santa instead of getting the credit for it. Thanks for visiting.

  23. This year I received books and gave book tokens, so it became a book orientated year this year. Congratulations on your book releases.

  24. My childhood books, mainly Bobbsey Twins and Nancy Drew Mysteries, cultivated my love of reading. I try to give a child a book every Christmas. I always have a list of books on my Christmas list just in case anyone needs a suggestion.
