I Always Listen to the Voices in My Head

A funny thing happened to me a few years before I began writing in earnest. I was given a reading by a psychic who was totally mystified by the large number of “incorporeal beings” he sensed hanging around me. He finally concluded that these were souls with whom I’d made pre-incarnation agreements. According to him, they’d all agreed to hover in the ether (or whatever it is that incorporeal beings do in between lives) and assist me when needed. In exchange, I’d apparently agreed to provide vehicles for them to incarnate into the physical plane.

In other words, or so I was told, I’d agreed to become their Mommy, which was something I really wasn’t feeling, if you know what I mean. I already had two children at that point–two children who were rapidly approaching adolescence, to be exact–and my husband and I had no plans to our family. So I had to ask, “How many of these beings are there, exactly?”

To which psychic boy responded, “I don’t have an exact number, but there are a lot of them. Dozens, in fact.”

Dozens? Of children? Oh, yeah…really not feeling it.

Anyway, this bothered me a lot. I hated the idea that I was the kind of person who would be so frivolous or thoughtless or–let’s face it–deceptive enough to enter into lifelong, apparently binding agreements with other beings. Dozens of them, yet! The idea that I would take their aid while completely failing to live up to my side of our bargain did not sit well with me at all.

Luckily for all concerned, it wasn’t long before I figured out what all those beings were really doing hanging around my head. Turns out they weren’t looking for me to give birth to them in the conventional sense at all. The “vehicles” they had in mind were books.

He was right about one thing though. I have dozens of characters populating my brain and it’s a real relief every time I get another story told. It gives the rest of us a little more breathing space, so to speak. As a reader, having characters come to life has always been the most magical part of fiction to me. As a writer…well, let’s just say it’s a little less magical when said characters are attempting to take over and wrecking your carefully constructed plot! Even so, I have to confess it’s still pretty cool. What’s even better is when I hear from readers or reviewers that my characters have come alive for them, as well.

There’s been a lot of talk lately about whether or not books are like babies to their authors and I’m happy to report that–for me, personally, anyway–it’s really not the same. I’d say books are more like foreign exchange students. They come and live with you for awhile, you work hard at interpreting them, maybe you even take them into your heart. But, however you feel about them, you always know that eventually you’ll have to let them go.

So you wish them well. You miss them when they’re gone. You really enjoy visiting with them from time to time. But they have to make their own way in the world and that’s just as it should be.

PG Forte writes rule bending, genre blending romance and paranormal stories. When she’s not pestering her husband to help her research scenes for upcoming books or being amused by her two vastly entertaining children, she can usually be found serving the needs and whims of her characters…or her cat. It’s a difficult job, but someone’s got to do it.

Her newest release is Edge of Heaven, an erotic, paranormal, m/m romance, available at Loose Id July 20th. http://www.loose-id.com/Edge-of-Heaven.aspx

Edge is an unlikely angel. Unable to atone for the sins he committed while human, he’s resigned to spending the rest of eternity in Limbo. Until he meets a miracle named Mattie.
