GUEST BLOG: JACQUELINE FARRELL

My name is Jacqueline Farrell and I live in the north west of England with my husband, two sons, two cats and one dog. I’m a teacher of French and English and I have just had my first paranormal e-book published with Lyrical Press, Sophronia and the Vampire. It’s the story of a crone – a witch in the last of the three stages in a woman’s life – who is enjoying a nostalgic trip along the west coast of America when she finds herself stuck in a small town, trying to help a young witch avoid becoming the possession of a two thousand year old vampire. I wrote this as an antidote to feeling sorry for myself as my fiftieth birthday was looming and also because it struck me that at 50 I don’t really identify with twenty-somethings anymore, as much as I love Buffy and Sookie Stackhouse. I also wanted a vampire who enjoyed his immortality and wasn’t racked with guilt about past choices he had made.

Writing the book was easy because I was really only writing for myself to begin with and I found it very enjoyable having a myth foundation to base myself on, but at the same time be able to create any new lore that I wanted. I’ve always been interested in the triple goddess theory of Maid, Mother, Crone and now I’ve reached the third stage myself it seemed only natural to focus on the crone. Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg, in Terry Pratchett’s Discworld novels, are two shining examples of this tradition, but I wanted Sophronia to be younger and, I like to think, a bit more glamorous. I’m also more interested in supernatural abilities like the people in Julian May’s Pliocene novels possess, rather than messing about with frogs and spells and cauldrons, so I gave Sophronia coercion and telepathy, since I’ve always thought it would be great to have those skills myself! I was also fascinated by the idea of a creature that had been alive for thousands of years and had a lot of fun thinking about what that might be like.

Previous to Sophronia and the Vampire I have had two historical romances published with Robert Hale under the name Jacqueline Webb, The Scarlet Queen and Dragonsheart, which I am in the process of self-publishing with Amazon. Also under this name I have co-written a Jane Austen ‘sequel’ with Amanda Grange published by Sourcebooks Pride and Pyramids—Mr. Darcy in Egypt, so life is quite busy at the moment. Being a bit of a luddite and still at the learning stage at e-publishing I don’t have a website/blog or anything else that I notice lots of people do nowadays, although I am girding my loins up to try to rectify the situation; however my email address, if anyone is interested, is jacqueline.farrell50@gmail.com
