GUEST BLOG: CORINNE DAVIES

What is Steampunk? It’s a genre that is gaining rapid popularity but many people are still unsure what it’s about.

If you’re a fan of movies like The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, played the Myst PC games, then you have already been exposed to Steampunk.

It can be described as Victorian elegance blended with futuristic science fiction. These are stories of time-travel — fantastic journeys that can be a light-hearted aerial romp through the skies, or an adventure through the oceans depths.
The genre has been around for a long time. Its roots are evident in the writings of H.G.Wells, Mary Shelly and Edgar Allen Poe. Victorian elegance blended with futuristic science fiction. Steam-powered technology rules.

History and romance is combined with fantasy. To round out these fantasies, Steampunk often has a supernatural or paranormal edge.

A plethora of distinct “-punk” genres are gaining in popularity with readers, movie goers, and gamers. Cyberpunk (Blade Runner, Matrix, Johnny Mnemonic), Dieselpunk (1920’s, WWII style) and Biopunk (characters with genetically engineered DNA).

There is a group called “The League Of STEAM”, and they have created a series of Steampunk inspired serials on Youtube.

More and more stories explore these genres. I’m looking forward to reading those, as well as diving deeper into them with my own writings.

Corinne Davies reads anything she can get her hands on from the side of a cereal box to a historical book on the Riflemen during the Napoleonic wars. By day, she is a full-time wife, mother, and product consultant. At night, she avoids such mundane tasks as housework and laundry by creating her own worlds where mythology comes to life. Worlds in which you are just as likely to be living next door to an ancient Deity as finding an mystic treasure in the attic.
